2023 Nissan Z vs Supra feat WRX, Miata, Veloster N, F-Pace SVR - Jason Cammisa on the ICONS Ep. 07
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 5 май 2024
- The ultimate review of the 2023 Nissan Z, including a track battle with the Toyota GR Supra and SCCA Hall-of-Fame race car driver Randy Pobst!
In this episode of ICONS, Webby award-winning journalist Jason Cammisa shines perspective on the New Z, comparing it to the original Datsun 240Z, and then taking us on a journey from the traditional sports-car to today's car of choice: the SUV.
With a Supra vs Z lap battle - complete with Streets of Willow lap times set by Randy Pobst - an impromptu drift-off, this is everything you need to know about the new Z.
Including why the original Z was such a big deal - changing what the term "sports car" meant, when it replaced the typically British two-seat roadster.
Bob Ross blames wage stagnation for sports cars becoming bigger, heavier, and more practical. As we move through the decades, the hottest cars then went to Hot Hatches and then Hot Sedans before now landing on fast SUVs.
The Mazda Miata is the only "British roadster" left. And it's brilliant.
The Hyundai Veloster N is the best hot-hatch money can buy.
The Subaru WRX is the hot sedan for everyman with baby.
The Jaguar F-Pace SVR is The Fun One - an SUV that does what SUVs should never do. Including sound like a NASCAR.
And the Z and Supra? They have just enough practicality to be usable daily drivers, but remind us that looking good is never going out of style.

You could put out a video on the performance of difference types of grass with these guys and i'd watch 100% of the video.
I could watch that
Actually bluegrass performs terribly many places it's planted and has all these irrational cultural associations. Perfect villain for Jason. Overconfident and deeply flawed incumbent. Weird and also flawed alternatives. I bet they could literally write an extremely entertaining episode on grass types lol
😐
truth be told watching Jason Cammisa's videos is just like watching tg all over again and it feels soo good 😊
We really need this video
This is what the 'Old' Top Gear fans loved; humor, knowledge, tact, horsepower. Camissa is a kid at heart and so many of us can relate to him!
The only thing missing is the banter between hosts. Throttle House fills that gap perfectly. Both channels are great complimentary replacements for the old Top Gear.
@@gabrielgingras814 i don't find throttle house guys to be funny tbh, they're kinda fun to watch but nowhere near the old top gear uk or jason cammisa
For friend vibes nothing beats donut
Exactly
I think this is even better because it's only about the cars the whole time.
This is the BEST piece of automotive journalism ever. Filming, Editing, and Content. Camissa, Randy, and Derek have succeeded the Top Gear legends at last. And Jason doesn't push a US-centric bias as much as Jeremy Clarkson pushed a Eurocentric one throughout his career. I'm liking this new era absurd, catchy, funny, yet accurate and thoughtful.
+1.... reminds me of the ol' Top Gear | Amazing audio-video experience.
@@daitengu989its amazing how much analysis emerged from what the Z symbolizes for the car enthusiast. Still my favorite auto journalism of all time.
Agreed
Yep Jason "American Clarkson" Cammisa strikes gold again!
It’s normal that Clarkson pushed euro cars during his career, since he’s a pre-internet person from an older culture. Younger car journalists belong to the internet age and they can see the whole planet. Cheers!
Whoever put all the little notes in the closed captions deserves an oscar, honestly my favorite part
Why Oscar of all car?
I just watched it all over again with CC turned on. Did not disappoint!
Late reply, but Jason writes the captions himself.
Dayum - what a video. Well done to everyone on screen (and off screen) that made this happen. The graphics, music choice, editing. Bravo!
We’d all love to watch a collab with MCM!
Totally agree MCM 👌

Good to see you guys watching this aswell, 400z vs moog's rb26 z 🤔❤👌
@@Tom-lf8hx No such thing as a 400Z. Doesn’t exist outside of your head.
I appreciate that Jason and his team didn't neglect to talk about the financial reality that drives people away from owning these cars.
Yeah, I absolutely would own a sports car but I'd need to make roughly twice what I make right now to do that. Like as it stands I might be able to afford a miata if there's a brutal recession and people start selling their toys at steep discounts and also somehow I don't get laid off but outside of that unlikely scenario I will not be buying a sports car.
Absolutely.
I have a Veloster N because of the topics discussed. I actually considered a Miata, but the practicality of needing a ONE CAR just made that a no-go.
@Jason Cammisa Only a dirty hippie like Bob would dare acknowledge the brutal reality of our current economic system.
@Jason Cammisa I thought Bob Ross died.
As a 30 year old car guy, I can look back at my car history and clearly see how accurate this video is. As I've gotten older, I've gotten more 'efficient' and focus more on value over fun which is really sad to see. I started with my first car at 16 being a 300ZX, switched to an R34 Skyline at 19, moved to North America at 21 and made the sensible, practical choice of a Mazda3 hatch when restarting in a new country. I couldn't stand being a car guy without a car to be proud of so i picked up a 370Z at 25 and after a few winters with snow i made the change to a WRX STI at 29. Each 'upgrade' was carefully considered and I was always chasing the best bang for my buck but looking at it now, it was almost always the fun that was compromised in each transition for more function and utility. Getting older sucks because it's a necessity to think about the cost instead of chasing what we really want, fun.
This production is on another level.
Jason a Randy make an amazing duo.
Props to all involved
The old top gear guys used to come up with a video like this every now and then but you guys smash it every single time. Respect.
So glad that Hagerty gave Jason what he needed to make his series work. Motortrend was limiting and you can see that, he's having fun here and making amazing content that's accessible by anyone. Thank you!
Hiding most of Camissa's content behind a paywall (albeit cheap) was motortrend's death sentence
@@shAdOwstAlkEr945 to be honest I subscribed to motortrend on demand just to see some of their content. It’s getting better but just production value wise it’s not as good as this series.
This is on the top gear level of production. Absolutely amazing presentation

I agree! I was going to comment but you said everything that I needed to say!
Jason, you have done an incredible job of capturing the essence of what MotorTrend used to be, with a little bit of old school Top Gear. Incredible cinematography, poignant writing, beautiful cars, and a nice helping of comedic relief. I get chills every time I watch one of your videos. Bravo.
Best automotive content on RUclips hands down. Sheesh this is so good.
Hi Chad 🤘.

@@autocrossracer8320 I agree, I shouldn’t have said RUclips because even on mainstream networks nothing comes close to how good this is.
@@drizzetsrevenge hi 👋🏻 🍻
This HAS TO BE the best car video I've seen this year! Excellent camera work, action with the cars and journalism. BTW, The subtitles.... Give that guy a raise! 🤣
Agree, but there's one HUGE factor Jason missed: traffic.
The biggest reason enthusiast vehicles are changing is because the roads are clogged. There are fewer and fewer places to enjoy a pure sports car. A SUV (or a truck) is much better sitting in traffic or in the suburban grind. Even if you DO get out on a mountain road, chances are you'll quickly get stuck behind someone who won't pull over.
Look at road traffic volume from the golden age of sports cars to now, and you'll see why there aren't many left.
@@yumpbalump that's only true if you're driving when everybody's driving. i regularly take some hours off during weekdays in the early afternoon for example or (my favourite) after the evening rush hour is over in summer and all the backroads are free. it's perfect. and i live in switzerland which is one of the smallest and most crowded places you can live in so if it works for me, it works for almost everybody. you just got to prioritize it
@@hazardeur
Couldn't agree more. Most of my "fun" driving is done between 5:30AM and 9:00AM on the weekends. Nobody, I mean NOBODY, is out that early on the weekends on most non major roadways.
May I ask what you drive?
@@severe28 sure, right now i'm having a lot of fun with a C7 Z06 Corvette. one of the most insane cars i had to date. what's your ride?
i always tried to get out early on the weekends at times like yours but i'm just to weak minded for that haha. as you say, it's probably the best time for driving, especially in a convertible
Yeah I paused and rewound the video so many times just so that I could read the subtitles
This Series is so perfectly produced in every episode, I cannot find a bad one.
great job Jason and the team filming with those amazing effects That make you feel like you are there watching him! Thanks for reigniting my inner car love.
By far, this is the greatest content on automotive that we can watch. You always leave us with a new learning, a refreshed philosophy and a never-ending passion for cars… such a wonderful experience 🙏🏼
This film made me go through so many emotions. This wasn't a car review. This was a tribute to what we lost and what we want in our souls. I absolutely loved this!!!. I want more Jason and Randy and films like this!
what we lost.. i'm only in my late 20s now. i'm only now able to buy a brand new car. and the market just aint what it was.
@@staydilatedTV sadly the affordability of all those great roadsters and coupes of the 60's & 70's was a fairly USA specific thing, for the rest of the even western world, they were a middle class luxury - something the original sales figure distributions for Porsche, Datsun, FIAT, Triumph, MG & Alfa Romeo remind us of.
@@stephanmartini4514 how was it in the 90s for japanese sports coupes?
Y’all have been CRUSHING it with the editing.
@@staydilatedTV the product themselves were outstanding! Technical tour de force, on all new platforms in many cases and usually bettered their USA & UK/EU competitors especially where price, performance and features were concerned. 90's RX-7, 300ZX, 3000GT and Supra were king of the performance hill. My previous comments about the USA $ value ratio remain though. In many other markets, the rising value of the Japanese yen meant these cars were high priced and sold in relatively small numbers denying access to a broad market, great shame.
Randy’s on the Hagerty payroll!!!!
Hip Randy is on hagerty payroll!
Such a beautiful presentation!! 🎉🎉👍👍 Always love to watch these videos because of the commitment and effort is that is put in. Well done. 💯👌
Love watching his content! The production value, story telling... all great.
Many of us compare ICONS to the best of Top Gear, but really, ICONS and Jason's other creations for Hagerty are quickly surpassing even that comparison.
Because the appeal of the original Top Gear was that it wasn't about presenters reading spec sheets to the audience. They were journalists that actually wrote something interesting about the cars they tested that went beyond just the numbers. Besides, who wants someone reading a spec sheet to you? Jason et al understand this and are making great, great content for us enthusiasts!
Top Gear is crap
I think TG was many people's intro to snappy, stylized, sarcastic, and funny 'journalism'. They have a ton of goodwill and nostalgia for being the first. Many of their segments are also just hilarious and there are so many to choose from. So even if ICONS is consistently as good or better, there's always going to be a hill to climb in people's minds.
TG was my benchmark before this...it's not even close now.
This episode is pure car porn!
@@asifnoaman8978 Ehhh idk about that one chief
I love top gear, I love the grand tour. But hagerty along with John and Randy have taken it to a whole new level and raised the bar of creativity and content.
this is what top gear used to be. cars were the attraction but you got a short story relevant to them
Yeah, but here the humour seems a lot more forced and cringe. Plus the main host tries to make himself look like another middle class worker just like you, when in reality he is a millionaire lol
I love this video too, but the banter that James, Richard, and Jeremy have with each other will never be matched.
@@OrionBlaze so you want reviewers to review exactly what they can afford and nothing else? He's rich because people like him, nothing wrong with that

Jason and Hagerty, these videos are at an incredible level of quality and writing. Even the videography is super thoughtful and deep. Love the way the cars came onto track while Jason was talking about the progression of enthusiast vehicles throughout generations. Then the SVR comes onto track going the opposite direction representing perhaps the progression going the wrong way for some enthusiasts.
Spot on! This comment just made my day. Thrilled someone caught that little easter egg.

“WRX Bitches!” was golden
Scoob fanbois need to calm down ....Sold my carbon fiber driveshafted, hard bushed, 305whp on 91 '15 Scoob Sti bc it was NEVER as fun or raw as my small cammed/flashed/downpiped Mitsubishi Evo 8 RS....fact. the subarus even the Sti are SOFT compared to the Evos. Subaru just happens to the 'current' lone survivor of the rally cars but the wrx was never as good as the Mitsubishi that OWNED the segment, so the perception of MANY that have never driven an Evo and only a softer WRX/Sti believe that it has to be the best one bc its still being produced.
This is the kind of automotive journal that I am looking for. The quality. My gosh. Keep up the awesome work.

Absolutely, and with tons of subtle comedic intellect! 🤓
This video is still beautiful, 1 year after its publication. Perfect blend of story telling, old top gear fun, petrolhead culture.
That Z has such a classy line! If I had the money I'd definitely get one
You guys are taking me down memory lane. Owned a yellow '70 Z, later a blue '02 WRX hatch. Great review, as usual
The critique of stagnant wages impact on enthusiasts is so good, with new car prices marked up and older sports cars climbing from collectibility, having a car just as a toy is hard to justify if you aren't making pretty big bucks these days
The sad thing is that sporty cars that are supposed to be affordable, like the 86, are being marked up heinously by dealers, preventing the people who they were designed for from buying them. Even used Miatas are beyond the reach of most, unless you want to fix a clapped-out one.
@@dougrobinson8602 just like the focus RS, if barely anyone buys these sport cars now and in a few years, then they'll consider them flops and then axe those models out of the line up even though many enthusiast want them
solution to his problem- build your own car. I built myself a Locost 7 from scratch over ~5 years. Way cheaper than any new sports car and trounces them in every performance metric(except comfort & safety by a large margin).

The production value on these is first rate.
@@rafifarhan4875 No he made a point that through its inception from the very early years that the Z designation is important, he also explained very clearly why.

No way. Clarkson'sTop gear is still the benchmark.
Eh subjective
@@wilsonmpesha904 Yes, to a degree. You cannot compare the budgets and the platforms for which each one is thought. I loved Clarkson's Top Gear as well: the trips, the challenges and everything, but RUclips videos are created differently. The image of the cars was most of the times the center of Top Gear, but here, even though we appreciate the looks as well, we are getting something else. Something that Jezza gave every time he could (a grater picture of a car and context), but that was lost overtime. Jason, on the other hand, is obviously researching and interpreting a very big picture with different intelectual perspectives. He writes, if you will, not in a very car enthusiast purist way, but in a more informed holistic way.
I love this piece, this is what very very good car shows are made of. A central theme, a talking piece, a timeline, a nod to the past and its future. A complete nutter.

There was so much honest, modern, relatable life advice in this 23 minute car review that I am seriously considering sharing it with multiple family members that could not care less about cars, but that desperately need to hear the things that were said in this episode, especially the concept on which the video ended.
@@cowmath77 Buddy, it's not fear that's holding me back😆, it's whether or not the people I want to send it to are perceptive enough to understand/appreciate the meaning of the advice/information that Jason worked into this review so eloquently.
@@moogle68 If they don't understand it, that's on them. The point could only be made clearer if Jason had put it all in big bold letters across the screen.
@@reinbeers5322 true, I guess what I meant is that they might disagree with the info. Anyways, "seriously considering" is a phrase that I use often, and it doesn't imply the reason for the hesitation. Obviously, it isn't my fault if they don't understand the advice given, but because that's a possible reaction I didnt want to waste the time it would take to send them a link with a short message explaining why they should watch a 20+ minute review of cars they aren't even interested in.

I have absolutely missed seeing jason on youtube for the past few years. So thank you Jason and Hagerty for making this series, this series always puts a smile on my face.
I have a love hate relationship with this episode. I love the production, research, attention to detail, and the list goes on. I could praise how well these episodes are crafted. I hate what the information tells us, the traditional car enthusiast is a dying breed. Not in the cool way that makes the enthusiast seem unique and cool but in a scary forced extinction type of way.
This is reality
Take it up a level and heed the point made about root cause... it's not that the enthusiast is a dying breed, people can't AFFORD to be enthusiasts any more. We are returning to serfdom... serfs with big screen TVs and food delivered to your door, but serfs no less.

Really empathized with the overall message, you absolutely nailed the struggle we are all living.
Here in Denmark the MX-5 is selling incredibly well. I see an ND every day, often multiple times a day. I definitely see MX-5s more often than Jaguars. It always makes me happy when I see that someone didn't buy some dumb SUV or overpowered car and bought a fun little MX-5 in stead.
Good to know, cool little cars , know what you mean , such a good choice
it may have to be because you're heavily taxed on SUV emissions, aren't you ? mind you, the system has gone so crazy now even MX5 are taxed... but the EV Hummer, nope, you can buy a whole fleet of that. Politics...
they did not mind importing the new Z nor the GR86 in Europe. The Supra barely sells. So glad there is still the MX5 !
The Miata (MX-5) is an absolutely wonderful car…the antithesis of the hot hatch. It’s built for the whimsy of motoring with the top down…it’s engaging and relatively cheap in all aspects.
So you should understand that to have a 30~40k toy really is a privilege. SUVs are not dumb, it's just because not everyone can afford the tiny little fun car.

PLEASE turn on the subtitles so that whoever wrote them can get the recognition they absolutely earned!
The people don't know what they're missing.
Man this is like way overkill. For the type of money that RUclips pays successful channels you’d think all of them channels would have content of this quality but nah. Lots of them stick to shaky footage in selfie mode with hardly any editing. This channel however sets a standard that inspires audience and creators alike. Nothing but gratitude for the work you guys do the best 23 mins I spent on the internet today were definitely worth it watching this.
Do you know it was until you said 23 minutes that I realised it was actually 23 minutes.... I couldn't tell, I just kept watching till the last minute. Damn
My life got better since i discovered this channel and met Jason Cammisa
This is the best automotive show out right now. Jason Cammisa is a gem.
Absolutely blew it out of the park with the quality and fun levels of this production! 10/10 car content!
As former MKII owner and a current MKIV TT owner, the rear end that you “Don’t fully trust”, is a hallmark of the Supra. I’m so glad they didn’t neuter it.
This! It also drives similar to other Toyota cars like the SW20 MR2!!

I’ve got one of those, too. The early 1990 build date turbo with the notoriously sketchy rear. I wouldn’t trade it for a 1994+ if you paid money on top. It’s too much fun.
@@negativeindustrial Definitely enjoy those cars forever! They're really fun vehicles!
You can thank bmw I guess 🤷♂️
@@VNCTHE1 Nobody asked. Your joke is lame.
Let's be honest here we're only watching this cuz we love seeing randy and jason doing their thing again , loving this
masterfully done! beautifully filmed and edited, story telling, history and humor. automotive journalism at its finest. not the inane BS rampant these days. superb!! keep it up!
Wow didn't want this one to end. Great writing, great editing, goosebumps everywhere by the finish. Thanks everyone involved, gonna go for a drive now.
Good Lord Gracious, Jason and the whole team around him are really spreading the love! Everybody in the production chain seems to rev it up to the max, these episodes all so well written, shot, presented, edited, VF/X'ed (not a term, i know), soundmixed - it's pure joy to watch them.
Icons, Jason and Editing team is now official my fav in youtube so far!
Man i love your work. I always find myself smiling during every video. You guys make my day.
This video hammers in something I've known, intuitively, about the sports car market for years. I can't think of a better way to frame it than this video.
This is so incredible. Thank you for talking about the economic side of this. Also, whoever is writing the closed captions, know that I rewatch videos for them!
Kudos to the whole team for the fantastic prouction of this video. I loved every minute of it..
I honestly had goosebumps all the time. The video quality is just... too much and the cars, the sound... man that's what I love.
As the proud owner of a 2022 WRX, this video really resonated with me. Had to sell the Corvette to accommodate my young family. I want to drive my fun car everyday to work and row my own gears, so it was the best compromise for me. Miss the corvette but I’m glad I can still have fun and now I get to enjoy smelling the roses with my kids!
Maybe I’m greedy but I want both…but I’m not afraid of used cars
Would have bought a used minivan/Tahoe,suburban,explorer cash price before selling my Vette. Ex wife pulled that with me when we had kids. $750 Ford explorer with ac, put a transmission in it for $400, still got my Camaro lol
