tbh i didn’t really get the impression that kaji was actually gonna take shinji out for tea (the dub here makes him seem a lot more assertive) plus to me it sounds more like shinji is returning kaji’s joke because he knows him and misato were a thing (again, the dub here makes shinji sound more aggressive)

I don’t understand how you guys view this as failing to understand Homosexuality and not Shinji insulting Kaji for being a womanizing creep.
Apparently, in the sub or original Japanese release, he says 'I am a boy', which is his way of saying 'Uhm, I'm a minor.' So there are at least 3 ways that this scene can be interpreted. I guess it can add to the show if you look at it as either of these ways.
Because Shinji line is weird and boring, he should have said something like "I am not a WOMAN" "Do I look like a woman?" saying "girl/child/boy" just make him sound like he is rejecting a child predator.
