I suspect ideology. Feminism has a very hostile take on traditional tropes, and in attempting to be edgy and anti-traditional, they cast the females like they wanted them to be... which is just kinda yuck. Though that leaves the question of how they cast the men into such a positive by comparison light.
So the story writer hates all men, and everyone thinks they themselves are a good person, so I think she made all main characters more like herself while and all men as normal people

The thing is that there are two versions of "diverse" in the modern American Regressive lexicon. The first (diversity with a lower-case d) is the traditional adjective, defined as differing from one another or composed of distinct or unlike elements or qualities. The second (Diverse, note the capital) is every category of people that does not include straight, white, non-transsexual men. This means that you can simultaneously have a group of people who are 100% Diverse who are also the same exact gender, skin color, and alphabet status. This semantic trick is used to bait unsuspecting people with good intentions who support diversity into supporting the regressive ideology of Diversity furthering the cause of Regressives and making them look more legitimate than they really are. The people in that writing room are part of a political and ideological fringe, but they (and by extension their ideology) appear to be more mainstream than they actually are because they baited a massive media corporation into supporting them.

"Bitchy" is a sexist term. What is bitchy in a woman is seen as assertiveness in a man. What is lack of emotion in a woman is seen as seriousness in a man. If you invert the roles every time you will realise.

@@-opera-1356 Snapdragon doesn't even seem like someone actually trans, just a kid who likes feminine things. There's a difference between liking feminine things and wanting to be female. While I'm not trans myself, the point is that you're unable to be comfortable with your body because of influences and environments that subjected you to it, yet Snapdragon already seemed comfortable with himself since the beginning, the problem was that he wasn't allowed to like certain things as a man. The conflict isn't internal struggle, the conflict was gender roles, and that in itself disputes the idea that he's supposed to be trans as it isn't an internal struggle, rather an external one. I've been close friends with someone trans _before_ she (mtf) was trans, the time we both didn't know what the hell that meant. But I've seen how she's grown, heard what her thoughts are, and seen her internal struggle - It isn't just because gender tropes are imposed on her, not because her father was the literal definition of a male gender trope, but because it's an authentic and personal experience that made her seek out for what was more natural to her. We were 12 year old's at best, yet even I've noticed how different she acts based on personal thoughts. And while I know everyone's experience is different, there's a common numerator and denominator within certain things that becomes a causation for certain aspects in life, and when it comes to being trans - It's inner turmoil or dissatisfaction with the feeling of this certain genitalia, and this is through social environments that built your character. And Snapdragon doesn't seem as so. Sure, his previous environment seemed...manly? I guess? But there isn't inherently wrong with his previous environment, it was that he just needed a bit of disclosure from being manly. Yet notice that the conflict revolves around gender roles, and that only? Like, do you seriously not expect me to think that a man can't express something femininely and still be a man? I also absolutely hate how they're making him this 'twinkish', while hinting that he could be mtf. That's just gross, from a level that it's glorifying how easy it is to be trans, and saying that if any straight man looks like this, he can't be a man. That's just so wrong.
Because Miura wasn't trying to push a political message. He just wrote excellent characters, one of which happened to be a (genuinely) strong, capable woman.

That might not even be a coincidence. I'm a female writer myself and have a much easier time writing male characters than female ones, because I can just write them as characters first and foremost (that just happen to be guys). With female characters there's SO much stuff on my mind because they are supposed to be strong and cool and defy old gender roles but not be too un-girly, not be a not-like-other-girls girl, just as capable as the guys but not powerful or beloved enough to get accused of being a Mary Sue, not too much of a forced thinly veiled political message, but it would be way too insensitive if the politics were COMPLETELY ignored so not that either, also of course different enough from myself to not get accused of self-inserting, but still relateable enough to everyone, yada yada and so on. Considering this writer's room started specifically with a politically charged intent, their female characters were bound to be a mess.

That's what I like about helluva boss. Now (maybe) not an anime but I think it sets a good example for the representation of trans people/diversity. For the context: male imps in the show have black and white striped horns. Female ones fully black. This is like hard coded and can not be broken. But, The main character has a sister millie has a sister, Sally (I think). She is the only female imp in the show to happen to have black and white horns. This oddity was never pointed out, and never mentioned she was a dude once. The only indication were the horns. Her being trans was not a personality trait, that was her sassy nature, but merely a fact in the background.
A bit old guard of me, but I keep thinking back to Superfriends. You know, 1970s cartoon, the Justice League. All those characters who happened to be ethnicities that weren't 'white person with dark hair and blue eyes'? That was either the first time they'd been given so much attention, or where they first came to be at *all*. And a whole bunch of them are beloved to this day. Too old? The original Teen Titans cartoon. Ditto the Justice League one, though both weren't quite as ambitious in this respect. Someone needs to learn the difference between "within group" and "between group" -- AKA, they are diverse compared to other anime writing rooms, and in that view they are 100% correct. Whether it's a good idea or not is a separate question
Yeah, that's a big oof from me. The point of diversity in writer's rooms is to have writers who can bring unique perspectives and experiences with them to the scripts they're writing, so that the characters can feel more authentic and therefore more engaging to audiences. If you just hire writers in one particular group without consulting anybody else, that's not diversity. That's the minimum amount of effort necessary to make it seem like you give a shit about diversity.

This just all comes down to aesthetics. If you’re platform is diversity, the LEAST you could do is acknowledge the differences in cast and have that add to the characters themselves instead of just relying on tropes and archetypes to define them.
Diversity in appearance, not thought. *Their* definition of diversity is wholly superficial for the sake of signaling virtue in a way that is exclusively visible. *Real* diversity is hard, and they're not about to do _work_ for a living. It's much easier to call you racist if you disagree, even if the word they're looking for is sexist. They can't even be assed to use the appropriate insult half the time.
Ironically enough, the over-reliance on classic tropes to define these characters actually makes the setting _less_ diverse, since the writer's aren't technically doing anything new or challenging the stereotypes surrounding certain characters' archetypes. Whoops.
This show gives me “writers grew up on 2014 tumblr and while being good meaning don’t realize that there’s more to diversity in media than simply diversity in media” Vibes
Truth. Legit took a Diversity In Media course, and it’s a much more loaded topic. As well as historically anyone that wasn’t a white male really had no power in the making of media, whether it be broadcast, film, or even radio. Groups have been exploited time and time again in media, I mean hell, the iconic Recycling Ad that legit has an Italian-American dress up as a Native American is a fairly recent example of group exploitation. The people on this board in the writing room probably have no understanding of true Diversity in Media, nor have a working knowledge of the history of media.

I've always found something weird, people search for equality yet in turn end up discriminating everyone else. Like why can't people judge someone based on how they are as a human being rather than what gender, sexuality or race they are. Why does it always have to be that someone is part of a category, thus they are entitled to more recognition than other or more representation than others. If anything we should be celebrating the fact that each and everyone is different rather than being upset that more people aren't similar to yourself. At the end of the day the large companies don't care about who they are catering to as long as it makes money, and what makes money are things that are enjoyable for everyone not just a select group of people.
Imagine the world going to war just because a group wants to "unite" (in this case shatter) humanity's bonds with eachother by bringing in one sided "diversity" that fuels whatever progress humanity has done on discrimination. Yep. Couldn't happen. 100%.
Demographics that would be considered diverse have a history of being prosecuted. There's safety in numbers, so people who are outside of the status quo group together. Even in the modern age, when people are more accepting, there's still cruel people out there. And the scars of the pain these groups went through are still there, making it hard to trust people, so they continue to remain in groups. Obviously it shouldn't be this way. Like you said, everyone should just be celebrated for being unique. Unfortunately, society can be cruel to those who aren't unique
It's a shame when a show that could be good gets let down by the producers. This show had really good possibilities, if only there was some creativity.

If only they had better writers, didn’t focus on “diversity”, had a higher (or better used) budget and got actual actors to play these characters. So if only everything was different it could have been good

3 years after this came out and this video still stands to show how crunchyroll is not very good at it's job. A few seasons ago, Crunchyroll decided to remove my favorite, arguably the best, feature on the app/website, comments. Most believe it was because of the controversy surrounding a gay harem show that included some controversial themes, in which I believe Crunchyroll only kept because they wanted to be "inclusive." Just saying, "thanks Crunchyroll, you screwed yourself over" and I hope that another anime publisher/company is able to overtake Crunchyroll/Sony.
When the writer is a woman because she's good at storytelling, worldbuilding, and writing a genuinely amazing work with good characters and an interesting premise, you get Fullmetal Alchemist, something considered to be a modern classic that I highly recommend anyone to read. When the writers are all strictly cisgender white women for the sake of them being women instead of being good at their jobs, you get High Guardian Spice, a show that is emblematic of the words "uninspired", "mediocre", and "lazy".
This is why I don't believe in hiring people based on their biological characteristics (that is, how they look) to "appeal to the demographic/diversify" things. Compassion in conjunction with strength is the rarest thing to find in a female character. While flaws are vital, it's becoming a dangerous trope to make the token strong woman mean. Katara in Avatar the Last Airbender is an example of a strong and compassionate female character done right.
Doesn’t help that this particular show was written in part by people who (at the time) probably didn’t think that compassion for anyone besides close companions was a good trait to have *IRL.*
Ow, it will be rarer, i tell ya. Based on what i observed, modern western media thinks that strong female character=Male Jerk McAsshole with a Vagina. They characterize strong female characters as the worst, most punchable kind of meathead dude, makeovered with a Mohawk and Voice Acted by a women. That is how West portray strong women, and its fucking disgusting.
I think another strong and compassionate female character could be Samus Aran. She may be a bounty hunter for hire, but she also single-handedly saved the Luminoth race from extinction that one time and didn't even ask them for anything in return!
When the staff behind a TV show keeps emphasizing how *_DIVERSE_* and *_PROGRESSIVE_* their show is, I immediately go, “Oh God. It’s _that_ type of show.”
@@hunterofdarkness8329 Seriously. When your characters reason for existing is that they're black, gay, or trans, instead of actually just being a well written character that just so happens to be those things... I'm out.
Bayonetta was designed by a woman and she’s one of the hottest and strongest female protagonists in the gaming industry (that I’ve heard of, I haven’t played the games). The point is, she’s popular because her design is GREAT, and designed to be a character both MEN and WOMEN can enjoy. The creators of HGS weren’t designing characters, they’re taking generic tropes and remixing them a bit for “diversity” and to cater to only a specific group of people instead of just being an enjoyable character.
You just don't mix highly polarized debates with creativity and business. It doesn't matter what your genitals are, it doesn't matter if you're fucking translucent (even tho that'd be cool), all that matters is the quality of your content/product/creation. Simple as that. As soon as your dumb personal debate has higher priority, your customers start getting garbage like this shit and Windows 11.
Yeah youre right doe, Bayo is a compelling char with actuall personality and history. The funny thing is that those that diss her design are guilty of judging a char/chick for being overtly sexual despite not knowing a thing about her character. It's the perfect Uno Reverse.
Not to mention half the characters in Undertale are designed by women and it features one of the few non-fetishistic lesbian relationships in gaming. It’s sad how so many people think diversity automatically = good.
Honestly, I expected this video to be way more mean spirited. This is a pretty charitable look at the show, its flaws, and the ecosystem it was produced in without just trashing the creators for their awful public statements. Hell, you even threw them a bone at the end. Class act, man.
It bothers me when stuff like this happens. It's bad for everybody. The same thing happened with the all female engineer bridge. Women are not inherently bad engineers. Women are not inherently bad writers. But if you go out with the express purpose of ONLY hiring women (especially in fields dominated by men) you instead stop picking people based on their skill, but on their genitals. When you pick people for any other reason than "they will do a good job" they tend to not do a good job. Then, when the project inevitably fails, it inadvertently pushes the idea that women are bad at engineering or writing, only because somebody decided to be super progressive and "prove" that women are just as competent as men, only to have the opposite effect. Hire for skills, not diversity quotas. Quantity over quality. If you want to make female writers look better, the solution is to prop up good female writers, not to just hire more of them.
I could not agree more with you. I hate it when stuff like this happens over and over again, when will people learn and work harder towards an actual solution? It’s honestly why I usually don’t mess with this side of media.
@@nguyenxuantungnguyenxuantu86 They're not bad engineers, they just in general have less interest in engineering which in turn means there are less engineers that are women. There's also that engineering is harder to learn for women due to the amount of only-male classes.

One time me and my buddies went to a crunchy roll expo and saw a bunch of free posters for this show that no one took. We took home entire stacks of the poster and brought them to school joking about how we were gonna use them as a new form of currency cause we just had that many. Good review btw. I like how you offered High Guardian balanced criticism while also being charitable in some aspects
Yeah, I'd take Sara Monobami's tweets with a grain of salt. As a fellow industry professional; her tweets come across as extremely unprofessional and pretty vindictive/Victim playing. If her show wasn't accepted, that probably just means that her concept wasn't as good as she thinks it is- or that she pitched it poorly. Its also common for amercian shows to be rejected today because they have no merchandise marketability or aren't geared towards a 5-13 year old audience(because most companies these days will reject all kinds of good shows in favor of the kiddie merchandising market. For example; Nickelodeon as it currently is managed, would've rejected Spongebob squarepants had it been pitched today- Despite Spongebob being their current cash cow. Making them huge hypocrites. Many companies these days reject anything that isn't something like Paw patrol.. and thats been making a lot of creators furious in this industry as of the last 5-10 years). Reading the comments of hers that you put in your video.. she appears to take rejection extremely poorly. It reads like she is blaming her lack of success on the fact that companies won't take HER diverse cast over a bunch of 'white womens' diverse cast. And in my opinion; her attitude is no better than the writing staff of high guardian spice(such as kate leth). She's using social justice and her skin color to blame companies for not taking her pitch- when in actuality there are several other factors that likely got her pitch rejected. Including the Kiddie merchandising market I mentioned above, or her show just not being as good as she thinks it is.
Yes, just a grain of salt because she'd dumped an entire box of Morton's. Given how we know these companies are risk averse, yadda yadda yadda all the other points you mention, there's plenty of other reasons for why her pitch gets rejected; but I do believe there is a kernel of truth to what she says for those same reasons. They've been bitten once already and are now twice shy- almost certainly not the whole story and not the whole truth, but I can believe it's a part given how money driven things are. But whatever reasonable point she has about the harms caused by councils of spiteful white women promoting themselves the champions of all underrepresented voices are greatly undermined by what is very clear pettiness, projection, and unprofessional conduct within her twitter tantrums and statements to two-bit pop culture journalists. Like you say, it's a lot of blaming ALL of her rejection on them with no reflections on any possible insufficiencies in her work. All that being said, I've seen more of her pitched idea on other venues, on its face was a more complete vision than what High Guardian Spice was announced with, ie the latter having nothing but character concept designs...and nothing but incompleteness in the final product like going 12 episodes without even defining what their end-goal role of "Guardian" actually is. It has an obvious Last Airbender vibe, but that at least clearly defines who it's aimed it, unlike HGS which from start to finish has no idea what it's target audience is.
In all fairness I think I'd much rather watch her show over high guardian spice. Even if her show is mediocre it probably wouldn't have failed at LITERALLY EVERYTHING like high guardian spice.
" Its also common for amercian shows to be rejected today because they have no merchandise marketability or aren't geared towards a 5-13 year old audience(because most companies these days will reject all kinds of good shows in favor of the kiddie merchandising market...)" It's also called "funding your own show". Yeah, it's cynical, but If I were an TV executive, shows that can generate extra revenue via merchandising would take higher priority to green light then ones that don't.

The fact that they don't see the irony in "Diversity" and "100% female writing room" is honestly painful.
Not to mention that they’re all white women who I can only describe as “tumblresque” in appearance
Its not just being all women there are millions of franchises with just men as the writers, but this is just shit???

Not to get into prophesizing (for the record, I'm not a religious person), but a central appeal of the mainstream Protestant movement is the concept we're all sinners and one can be forgiven for accepting the teachings of Jesus.
Again, I'm not telling anyone to go to Jesus, but pointing out that wokism is self-limiting because no one can live up to its concepts. This is true, if for no other reason, than it's a moving target and what was okay, and even demanded yesterday, is verboten tomorrow.
@@JonSmith-hk1bq Yeah but that doesn't really apply in this case since she didn't actually apologise for her old posts or even take responsibility for them.

She doesn't say sorry once, then shifts the responsibility on Tumblr, and then shuts down conversation about the topic so people can't even disagree with her.

I used to work as a sexual assault/domestic violence victim advocate and prevention educator. I had to go to a lot of conferences for training and whatever. Diversity in appearance, not thought. *Their* definition of diversity is wholly superficial for the sake of signaling virtue in a way that is exclusively visible. *Real* diversity is hard, and they're not about to do _work_ for a living.
Occultism 🥱
Why should we celebrate that we're different? Just being different doesn't mean something is good or valuable or useful.
Not everyone is looking for equality. Sometimes they want to just see themselves reflected on the screen. Period.
We are 100% diverse.
The crew is made 100% of white women wearing glasses.

@@das_9677 Somehow I get the feeling that the crew falls into a rather narrow like-minded subset of women. Meaning they were severely lacking in actual diversity.

I enjoys shows when they really don't care about anything at all and focuses on the story rather than some shitty rules twittards made
Exactly 😆🤣🤣😂
I guess it's not nearly as bad as Netflix Cuties, but that's a very low bar 😅
@@hunterofdarkness8329 Seriously. When your characters reason for existing is that they're black, gay, or trans, instead of actually just being a well written character that just so happens to be those things... I'm out.
It was Crunchyroll which marketed it as diverse not the staff
"... just as bad as everyone predicted."
"Just kidding, it gets worse."
Sh*t hit me harder than a pat on the back from Mike Tyson 😭
Bayonetta was designed by a woman and she’s one of the hottest and strongest female protagonists in the gaming industry (that I’ve heard of, I haven’t played the games). The point is, she’s popular because her design is GREAT, and designed to be a character both MEN and WOMEN can enjoy. The creators of HGS weren’t designing characters, they’re taking generic tropes and remixing them a bit for “diversity” and to cater to only a specific group of people instead of just being an enjoyable character.
A writing room filled with woman ? More like whamin
It's the perfect Uno Reverse.
bayonetta is ugly sorry not sorry
Not to mention half the characters in Undertale are designed by women and it features one of the few non-fetishistic lesbian relationships in gaming. It’s sad how so many people think diversity automatically = good.
Honestly, I expected this video to be way more mean spirited. This is a pretty charitable look at the show, its flaws, and the ecosystem it was produced in without just trashing the creators for their awful public statements.
Hell, you even threw them a bone at the end. Class act, man.
From my experience on the internet i imagine he made it like this to not encourage people to harass the creators...
it's scamboli not your average clickbait hater
that goes to show how shitty this show is to the point its too pitiful to take a massive ginormous shit on it
Yeah, I'm actually glad its not another tiresome, click baiting, hate rant.
@@zefile this is why I watch him even when I disagree with the main opinion, he makes actually solid points which is what I love
Best way to describe this show. It tries to appeal to everyone that it appeals to no one.
it tries to appeal only to a group of quasi-progressive centrists.
the blood animation when thyme stabs the arrow into the cave crab guy looks like it's from South Park
"Women are not inherently bad engineers"
I would like to press X to doubt.
Or, you know, it could be that men are better at those things in general.

I truly appreciate the way she moves while she's skulking away here. The attention to detail is immaculate. Especially how, as she's moving, you can see the bottom of the animation cycle clips just above the bottom of the screen, exposing her abruptly cut off legs briefly but quite clearly and oh my god I'm gonna have a stroke
The legs 😂
One time me and my buddies went to a crunchy roll expo and saw a bunch of free posters for this show that no one took. We took home entire stacks of the poster and brought them to school joking about how we were gonna use them as a new form of currency cause we just had that many.
Good review btw. I like how you offered High Guardian balanced criticism while also being charitable in some aspects
That's such a highschool thing to do lmaoo
would be more profitable to use them as fire starters during winter times. It would net big profits.

Yeah, I paused to read her tweets and they just seemed like she was throwing a tantrum.. but hey that’s what Twitter is for I guess!
Reminds me of Ben10 Omniniverse, how they put a terrible alien in the show just for kiddie merchandise
In all fairness I think I'd much rather watch her show over high guardian spice. Even if her show is mediocre it probably wouldn't have failed at LITERALLY EVERYTHING like high guardian spice.
" Its also common for amercian shows to be rejected today because they have no merchandise marketability or aren't geared towards a 5-13 year old audience(because most companies these days will reject all kinds of good shows in favor of the kiddie merchandising market...)"
It's also called "funding your own show". Yeah, it's cynical, but If I were an TV executive, shows that can generate extra revenue via merchandising would take higher priority to green light then ones that don't.
