I can't stand when people confuse "strong female" with bitchy and emotionless. A strong female is vulnerable, too. This type of writing being perpetuated by women just shows they don't actually care about character development, but instead "men bad".
Writers, take notes from these wise words
Meanwhile, She-man's weakness was that she was too strong
"Bitchy" is a sexist term. What is bitchy in a woman is seen as assertiveness in a man. What is lack of emotion in a woman is seen as seriousness in a man. If you invert the roles every time you will realise.
@@wurttmapper2200 that's just false

Ya know whats kinda sad, is that her allegedly originally pitched shows characters looked so much more interesting and unique, and I bet would be even more so given time. It almost looks like Avatar mixed with that Adventure Quest MMO as far as how they're drawn.
I suspect ideology. Feminism has a very hostile take on traditional tropes, and in attempting to be edgy and anti-traditional, they cast the females like they wanted them to be... which is just kinda yuck. Though that leaves the question of how they cast the men into such a positive by comparison light.

They don't want the peaks. They want the troughs and voids, the very *pits* of depravity.

The fact that they don't see the irony in "Diversity" and "100% female writing room" is honestly painful.
Not to mention that they’re all white women who I can only describe as “tumblresque” in appearance
The thing is that there are two versions of "diverse" in the modern American Regressive lexicon.
The first (diversity with a lower-case d) is the traditional adjective, defined as differing from one another or composed of distinct or unlike elements or qualities.
The second (Diverse, note the capital) is every category of people that does not include straight, white, non-transsexual men.
This means that you can simultaneously have a group of people who are 100% Diverse who are also the same exact gender, skin color, and alphabet status.
This semantic trick is used to bait unsuspecting people with good intentions who support diversity into supporting the regressive ideology of Diversity furthering the cause of Regressives and making them look more legitimate than they really are. The people in that writing room are part of a political and ideological fringe, but they (and by extension their ideology) appear to be more mainstream than they actually are because they baited a massive media corporation into supporting them.
Its not just being all women there are millions of franchises with just men as the writers, but this is just shit??? Why do you people gotta go on to say «ITS MADE BY WOMEN THATS WHY ITS TRADH BØØØAHHH» what? This isnt diverse all the main characters except one is white, and have basic knowledge «wokeness»

That might not even be a coincidence. I'm a female writer myself and have a much easier time writing male characters than female ones, because I can just write them as characters first and foremost (that just happen to be guys).
With female characters there's SO much stuff on my mind because they are supposed to be strong and cool and defy old gender roles but not be too un-girly, not be a not-like-other-girls girl, just as capable as the guys but not powerful or beloved enough to get accused of being a Mary Sue, not too much of a forced thinly veiled political message, but it would be way too insensitive if the politics were COMPLETELY ignored so not that either, also of course different enough from myself to not get accused of self-inserting, but still relateable enough to everyone, yada yada and so on.
Considering this writer's room started specifically with a politically charged intent, their female characters were bound to be a mess.

@@-opera-1356 Snapdragon doesn't even seem like someone actually trans, just a kid who likes feminine things. There's a difference between liking feminine things and wanting to be female. While I'm not trans myself, the point is that you're unable to be comfortable with your body because of influences and environments that subjected you to it, yet Snapdragon already seemed comfortable with himself since the beginning, the problem was that he wasn't allowed to like certain things as a man. The conflict isn't internal struggle, the conflict was gender roles, and that in itself disputes the idea that he's supposed to be trans as it isn't an internal struggle, rather an external one.
I've been close friends with someone trans _before_ she (mtf) was trans, the time we both didn't know what the hell that meant. But I've seen how she's grown, heard what her thoughts are, and seen her internal struggle - It isn't just because gender tropes are imposed on her, not because her father was the literal definition of a male gender trope, but because it's an authentic and personal experience that made her seek out for what was more natural to her. We were 12 year old's at best, yet even I've noticed how different she acts based on personal thoughts. And while I know everyone's experience is different, there's a common numerator and denominator within certain things that becomes a causation for certain aspects in life, and when it comes to being trans - It's inner turmoil or dissatisfaction with the feeling of this certain genitalia, and this is through social environments that built your character.
And Snapdragon doesn't seem as so. Sure, his previous environment seemed...manly? I guess? But there isn't inherently wrong with his previous environment, it was that he just needed a bit of disclosure from being manly. Yet notice that the conflict revolves around gender roles, and that only? Like, do you seriously not expect me to think that a man can't express something femininely and still be a man? I also absolutely hate how they're making him this 'twinkish', while hinting that he could be mtf. That's just gross, from a level that it's glorifying how easy it is to be trans, and saying that if any straight man looks like this, he can't be a man. That's just so wrong.

Not to get into prophesizing (for the record, I'm not a religious person), but a central appeal of the mainstream Protestant movement is the concept we're all sinners and one can be forgiven for accepting the teachings of Jesus.
Again, I'm not telling anyone to go to Jesus, but pointing out that wokism is self-limiting because no one can live up to its concepts. This is true, if for no other reason, than it's a moving target and what was okay, and even demanded yesterday, is verboten tomorrow.

What was the black and white anime at the beginning!? That looked cool!
For a second I thought Cornell was the ominous unknown enemy.
i kinda hate this part of myself but whenever they emphasize how diverse a cast is i cannot stop myself from thinking about it all. the. time. while watching the show. "A character looks somewhat female but is male? must be trans and probably not usefull to the plot because they added them in with the idea in mind of them being trans as their only personality trait". like come on, stop focusing on advertising the divesrity and actually write the damn show so i can look at a gay character and not instantly assume they were implanted in the show to be there for *diversity* and nothing more. please
All rights are human rights.
Fr
That's what I like about helluva boss. Now (maybe) not an anime but I think it sets a good example for the representation of trans people/diversity. For the context: male imps in the show have black and white striped horns. Female ones fully black. This is like hard coded and can not be broken. But, The main character has a sister millie has a sister, Sally (I think). She is the only female imp in the show to happen to have black and white horns. This oddity was never pointed out, and never mentioned she was a dude once. The only indication were the horns. Her being trans was not a personality trait, that was her sassy nature, but merely a fact in the background.
@@CS_Mango Good point.
A bit old guard of me, but I keep thinking back to Superfriends.
You know, 1970s cartoon, the Justice League. All those characters who happened to be ethnicities that weren't 'white person with dark hair and blue eyes'?
That was either the first time they'd been given so much attention, or where they first came to be at *all*. And a whole bunch of them are beloved to this day.
Too old? The original Teen Titans cartoon. Ditto the Justice League one, though both weren't quite as ambitious in this respect.
Hell, Steven Universe was high-key not fucking around about diversity and covering topics you would *never* think to see in a cartoon at all, let alone one that looked like that. But there was a clear *point* and plot to the show that made all of that work.

A lot of that has to do with outside influences, and lack of experience I'd imagine. Hopefully they take this as a lesson, and learn from it and go on to produce better stuff in the future.

A room made up of 100% white women is not “diverse.” The color of your hair doesn’t count. This all seems super performative.
No no no, you misunderstand. The less cis white men you have the more diverse you are.
I saw a photo like 6 years ago, it was a lineup made entirely of dark skinned black women, and the tagline was "The most diverse lineup we've ever seen".
Its performative thats all it ever was, its really annoying when white women will try to make a a show but only focus diversity and foget about characters and writings and what do ya know the show is shit and along with that it give weird cucks a reason to blame diversity for ruining show when it really just is bad writing and characters not the fact that theyre gay or a different race
Someone needs to learn the difference between "within group" and "between group" -- AKA, they are diverse compared to other anime writing rooms, and in that view they are 100% correct. Whether it's a good idea or not is a separate question
Yeah, that's a big oof from me. The point of diversity in writer's rooms is to have writers who can bring unique perspectives and experiences with them to the scripts they're writing, so that the characters can feel more authentic and therefore more engaging to audiences. If you just hire writers in one particular group without consulting anybody else, that's not diversity. That's the minimum amount of effort necessary to make it seem like you give a shit about diversity.
I used to work as a sexual assault/domestic violence victim advocate and prevention educator. I had to go to a lot of conferences for training and whatever. And do you know how many white girls with dyed hair used to push “diversity” then in the same space talk over the 3 POC in the room? They really don’t care; white people really just like to get in a pissing contest over who’s more woke. Edit: the reason why I bring this up is those same people are probably the target audience for this show lol

A good writer starts with a compelling character then just so happens to make them of a certain identity. But the Twitter trash writing these kinds of shows are lunatics who base their entire personality around crap like who they bang or how much melanin is in their skin, so the characters end up being just as one dimensional as they are. This is why instead of getting Michiko & Hatchin, they get High Guardian Spice.
True, as someone who's LGBT and Asian i hate it when the defining trait of a character is that they are part of a minority. I prefer no representation over trash representation

Arcane is a perfect recent example of strong characters that all happen to be diverse. Just like real life, it is what it is. Art is a mirror. People are all different, moving through the same cruel world. When identity becomes the plot, the show becomes ruined. I hope more people take after what Arcane did. The funny thing is, it isn't even all that spectacular or progressive. Arcane is how characters should be written in every form of media we get. It should be the BASELINE.
