Something fun I discovered this week as I have rarely rewatched Death & Rebirth is that they added Asukas little sneeze, shrug or whatever it is first in Death & Rebirth, which also had some of the updated art used in the 2003 DVD Release NOT the 1996 art. 1996: First art style, no sneeze Death & Rebirth: Second art style, sneeze 2003: Second art style, no sneeze Rebuild: Third art style, sneeze Seems strange they removed the sneeze from the DVD version as they had animated it years before.
The original dub actress of Asuka is amazing, a lot of emotion and range. You could hear her bratty tone and her growing defensiveness and inferiority complex, it was all so clear in her tone and it all sounded so real and genuine. Also she genuinely sounded like she was about to cry out of frustration like a girl her age would.

Sure the elevator scene saved a lot of time animating, but it also conveys just as much, perhaps even more than a fully animated scene and dialogue about tensions between the EVA crew. A bold, yet brilliant solution. It’s interesting to see how limited budgets force indie creators to use creative solutions to close the gap between them and a big budget production.
"She doesn't even realise that she likes him!" contrasted with the meaningful silence after "I hate you! I hate everyone!" really is the heart of the difference between these characters.

So I think it was actually mostly time since they already had a story board and a rough animation of EoE which was intended to be episodes 25 and 26
@@seacrystal6189 that's because it's Shinji's "rebuild" of reality. Rei this time grab Asuka's wrist cause she knows already what's coming, as she's the only other survivor from the EoE, indeed Asuka was dead and brought back to life by Shinji.
One idea that I’ve heard which sounds pretty strong to me is that the rebuilds are meant to be hated. The main theme of the original was to do with the dangers of embracing escapism, but then ironically fans used the franchise as a means of escapism. As such the rebuilds exist to give an idealised anime which says to the audience “Isn’t this what you wanted?”, where characters easily grow and overcome difficulties, and where love interests play an overly large role in the story. This scene reflects this pretty well with the silence being broken very quickly, to call the audience impatient, then having the Rei stand up for herself uncharacteristically before them having an unrealistically meaningful conversation. So I suppose in some respects hating it isn’t the worst, I suppose it would miss the point even more to love it. Also this could all easily just be wrong and it could just be the weird haram world, but I doubt the same guy responsible for a masterpiece like the original would manage to fail so badly by accident afterwards.

The original has such a crescendo, 1:46 ending with this 1,2,3, it's so nice. The new one is just another hint in favour of the loop hypothesis around rebuild, like Rei already knew what Asuka was about to do.
The reason why there was long pause on scene was because they can't do any more scene to fit it on a 20 minute episode and they are very tight on budget.

Scheduling can be much more devestating to a show; if a director gets sick for a few days and can't come in things like story boarding slow to a hault and it's hard to really animate anything. And for weekly anime a few days of bad scheduling can throw off an episode. Soooooo Anno prolly saw there was problems with schedule+his psyche and went for more punctual scenes where we have to think and interpret the meaning for ourselves.

I politely disagree with you. In the 90s many anime looked very similar. Not to say that it’s “bad” but I enjoy how modern anime has so much unique, stylized art. A lot of shows you can recognize solely from its art style.

The way the old versions and the rebuild one interact from 0:56 make me think this is not meant as a new imagening of the old scene but directly interacting with it. Which fits right into all the other hints in rebuild that Eva takes place in kind of a cyclic/looping timeline.
Well, the elevator scene lasts for a solid minute before they start talking. The team behind Evangelion talked about how in the latter episodes, they were given lower budgets and less cels to work with.

The rebuild is just Anno’s equivalent to the New Star Wars, but actually good. Make something that looks pretty and recognizable, then shit on the trash fanbase giving them EXACTLY what their fantasies want, making “fixes” to improve the product, only to blow it up in the fan’s face telling the “You’re not satisfied and you never will be. Grow the fuck up and move on with your life. Stupid otaku.” I couldn’t agree more. The franchise became the very thing it wanted to argue against in the show’s themes, but then it became a stupidly profitable franchise for dorks to consooom. It’s all bullshit in a way. That happens because it would make the weebs happier that rei was more of a person and lead them into thinking that the rebuild has a happy otaku ending. Thats because the original is so memorable and the rebuild feeds of off the nostalgia of the show. But, scince the slap is blocked the scene says nothing. Just that Asuka is wrong while the original told us about rei and asuka. Asuka gets on the path to her mental breakdown and rei is shown to be a doll and do as ordered.
Theory goes that Rei has her memories from the og show, just like Kaworu Gotta ask yourself: are the dead sea scrolls just manuals, or a history book telling what happened in the previous iteration?

For example in the opening scenes from rebuild, you can see some giant body outlines in the same crucified position that the mass produced evas were at the og third impact. Considering rebuild a sequel kinda gives it more weight
The rebuild audio is a fan dub. Astonishing how many people don’t realise that. Almost like people follow the bandwagon of shitting on the rebuild series without having actually watched it.

itsNEi I feel like both scenes serve a purpose. But I prefer the rebuild because it actually shows growth in the characters. I feel like people don’t actually know what the point of the rebuild was. And it’s purpose is to be Evangelion but be completely different at the same time. In the rebuild we see that Asuka still has an inferiority complex. But instead of bottling up her feelings. She actually stops and talks to others about her feelings and even puts others before herself. She refuses to let her emotions consume her in the rebuild. Even taking Rei’s place in piloting Unit-03 just so she could have a dinner party with Shinji and his father even though she has clear feelings for Shinji. OG Asuka was bitchy and never grew. Sure that was one of the themes of the OG series but the rebuild isn’t that. The original series never really deconstructed the themes. Just had characters act in those themes for the sake of acting in those themes. And at points became painful to watch because it was the same over and over and just getting worse each time. Hell Asuka even acknowledges REI’s Struggle by looking at her bandages. But no one ever brings up scenes like when talking about the rebuild. They just like shitting on it for no reason. With their only argument being “ They’re not as good as NGE because” and I think that’s bullshit And when Rei says she’s not a doll in the rebuild it holds so much more weight Bc Rei has next to no development in the OG series. Where in Rebuild there was lots. She was more outgoing and genuinely wanted to be a person. Her relationship with Shinji and his father felt a lot more tangible than it did in the OG series. Making her ironically feel like she’s not a Doll. Look I like the OG Series more. But I can tell the intention of these scenes and I prefer the rebuild. And I know you prefer the OG. I just hope people stop shitting in the rebuilds because they’re not supposed to be NGE, They’re supposed to be The Rebuild of Evangelion.
Juju I literally said “OG Asuka was bitch and never grew” obviously pointing at her devolution. Understanding the characters doesn’t mean I have to like them. I understand. But the point I was trying to make about the OG series was that the characters really just had one defining trope and ran with for the entire series which wasn’t bad it was just kinda tiring to see. And the characters just got worst as the series went on. I personally like the fact that rebuild Asuka wants to be more independent and doesn’t have time ogle over men. She doesn’t have some gross perverted mindset of what love is. And rebuild Asuka is the literal example of what Asuka could’ve been had she actually let people in. And when I say “it was the same over and over again” I’m not fucking wrong like once you hit the middle point in the series if just her failing over and over again and being depressed about it. It does show her devolution but it was essentially the same thing just at varying degrees. And her resolution in EOE felt a little weird to me as it kinda came out nowhere. I know she longed for the love someone deep down but it happened so late in the series. It felt kinda weird imo. Also she didn’t do a good job of masking her depression. The other characters were just selfish and refusedto help her. They acknowledged that she was in pain. And never reached out. Neither side made an effort and that’s what led to her downfall. I like that rebuilds have strong sense of communication in them. Even if Is a different message than the OG series. Because it’s supposed to be. I didn’t miss the point of her character I just found it boring and obnoxious. Like she was annoying at the beginning. And got depressed at the end. And I’m supposed to feel for her? She acted like bitch throughout the entire show, up until the very end not letting anyone in because she was depressed and I’m supposed call this accurate deconstruction. That is exactly what I meant by they just play into tropes. I know shinji’s character is supposed to be unlikable but I actually his character a lot more than Asuka. The original series does nothing to deconstruct asuka. Just showings us glimpses of her past and her progress downfall. And that’s not deconstruction. There was no subtlety to how human emotion were conveyed in the OG series. It made it a point to talk about them whenever it could. But that couldn’t stop the obvious tropes that were present and if you really at the OG series. You will see that characters and nothing more that just tropes. And when the question. Why should I care about Shinji? Why should I care about Asuka? You probably respond with some shit like. That’s the point why should you care about them? That’s the point of their characters your supposed to wanna care about them less or hate them. Well that I say if the characters bring nothing new to the table and are bad at the beginning of the series and bad at the end. Coming to their own resolution that is still pretty shit. Then what makes these characters better? I literally just pointed out the reasons why Asuka’s character is flat. But at this point I don’t care. I’ve said my piece.

Shinji in the rebuild is a surrogate for the otaku and how he doomed himself and the world to save his waifu instead of letting go or growing up, causing the third impact. That is the Curse of Evangelion. The fans are stuck in a perpetual childhood the same way Star Wars fans bitch about the new trilogy. Kaworu is Anno’s surrogate trying to show those people life can be good if you grow up, improve your character, and leave toxic fandom behind, but they’re too far gone down the rabbit hole, becoming hikikomori. The manchild. Evangelion, and especially Rebuild, is a mirror held to the viewer displaying a hard truth one must learn: you can’t regress into fantasy.
Because everyone wants to be in Shinji's shoes so the Rebuilds finally gave in and jack off audience members with fan service. Making every actor to revolve around what the common audience fan would do if they were Shinji.

I like how at 1:06, she says she’s blocking herself, and then the rebuild shows her slap being blocked, and then later cuts to her own hand. Also, it seems like perfect timing at 1:02, the silence from the rebuild coordinated with Rei’s first words in the og. Almost seems like the mad lad Anno planned it all.
I feel like the original tension had more tension between them, esp from Asuka's side, but I also like the rebuild scene where Rei doesn't take Asuka's attitude towards her and stops her from hitting her.
The coloring in the DVD release is admittedly better, but I love Asuka's expressive animation much more in the original release. Glad it came back in the rebuild.
Perfect example of less is more. Static shot building tension. The animation in the Rebuild may be be more detailed but the original still looks better.

Maybe it still was too long but you have to be rather oblivious to the more bleaker tone of 96' evangelion not to see how it actually enhanced the scene. It could've been done better? Absolutely, different angles and whatnot, but they still should've maintained the akward silence.
The most meaningful art comes from a context of restriction. Yes, they were short on budget but we can't deny this was a genius way to capture the character's psychology that probably wouldn't have happen without the money context
the way they did the rebuild is so good because it is intentionally made to be a "normal" anime with no under tones or message and it really feels more unsettling then the originals just because it is so different from the originals.
Yeah, I think it was intentional and there was a connection with the original. Also in Rebuild, Asuka didn't say that she hated Rei at the end, although Asuka was still jealous to her and called her stupid, but there was no sign of hatred. Rebuild Asuka always felt alone and didn't need friends before, but hearing Rei said something like that made her felt uneasy and later she realized that being with the others weren't bad as she thought.
Kinda don't like how the rebuild makes this scene about Shinji. The original showed more of Asukas inner workings, her competitiveness towards Rei was about her wanting to be the best pilot and feeling inferior and like she needs to prove herself, and then rebuild watered it down to fighting over a boy.

Its like the rest of the rebuilds - EEEVERYTHING is spelled out for the viewer. No mystery, no thinking or feeling about whats going on. The rebuilds are the definition of "tell, don't show". Kinda sad.
I didn't know about the budget restrictions were a reason for the extended elevator scene. Nevertheless, I'm still astounded by the original cut. The animators had to make difficult choices in what to include in the final cut, and everything they animated must serve a key purpose since they didn't have the resources to animate everything they wanted. They used the pauses to heighten tension, to reflect, or to simply build mystery. There were many scenes like this in the anime so that's why I didn't feel it was out of place.
It's kinda understandable it would look so different in the DVD release when you think about it. The original NGE went through a hellish development cycle to get the episodes to air on time so they had to cut corners
I love the fluidity of the rebuild and the light/shadow aspect. But the original is amazing on its own. The tension buildup, and the way they act is amazing. They act how one would in that situation. They have so much on their shoulders as teens having to act like adults.
Honestly, I’ve seen some people complain about the one frame entire scenes, but I think it really shows the tension between characters. Other than this scene, the scene where it’s one frame of Shinji holding Kaworu is genius. Shinji has to make the decision, and it’s somewhat reasonable for him to take some time to think whether to kill him.

Ok gonna rant for a sec. You've probably seen that comment in this comment section that says that in the Rebuild's version of this scene is about "boy trouble" but I want to rant because that comment was obviously made by someone who hasn't seen the scene. There is ONE extra convo about Shinji but the rest is essentially the same. In 2.22 Asuka has just had her Eva taken away. That's what the conversation is about. The Rebuild version of this scene, like the rest of the Rebuilds, is more literal than metaphorical. Stop making stuff up to make the Rebuilds look bad.
It’s what I love about old school Eva, it’s the long drawn out moments of silence. Another one is the Shinji and Kaoru scene with the creepy classical/opera music playing. Just standing there staring at each other before…..”PLOP!”

While throughout evangelion and especially in much later episodes they use still frames to cut time and costs, this scene was always planned to be this way, hidaki anno has always stated he wanted the long awkward silence while they were essentially trapped together.

I gotta watch the rebuild, but I always prefer that cool 90s art style over the more modern, updated art style. Not that it’s bad by any means, just the way I drink the tea.
Evangelion has to me one of the most perfect examples of "no money, but make them better because of that". It true they ran out of it, but at the same time they made the scene completely meaningful with that "long" and for someone "too long" still scene. I can feel much more their feeling uncomfy, while in the rebuild you can't do it, you have no time. There's another long still scene in my mind, the one where shinji comes back after his first flee. He saw Misato at the train station, and there's a good 40sec of still scene. And it's perfect like that, I didn't imagine anything else considering their psychology, their behaviour, and what's happened before.
Good morning! I’ve never seen Eva so here’s my honest thoughts~ At first I thought the original was paused (to let the rebuild play for a bit) but then when they both started going at the same time I realized that wasn’t it. Tension was definitely building cuz of it! The rebuild seems to have nicer animation but it also felt,, cluttered. A lot of dialogue. Not totally sure if there really is just a lot of dialogue or it just felt as much because of the two audios going. That said while the animation does seem a bit more expressive in the rebuild the original lines seemed to have more of an impact-straight to the point with less flowery words. 2003 dvd improved in small things with the animation. Overall I think 2003 was the best but rebuild still had nice animation! Tldr I’ve never seen Eva and the rebuild animation is nice but the og has more impact and the 2003 was able to add little things to the animation for extra pop
Original had worse animation but way more time for characterization and making the characters feel really alive.It being a series meant that it hard more time for smaller things that really help sell a character.Meanwhile rebuild as a series of films didn't have the luxury of all the time to slowly build up tension psychologically.This is why rebuild has way more action and drama in it and the dialogue is so dense because it has to cram a lot of information into films.Overall I like the original way better than the rebuild because it had time to let you think about things while I kid you not I had to pause once every 3 minutes of the rebuild,besides I don't really get excited about big "robots" beating the shit out of eachother and I liked the original because of the psychological implications of it with the evas just being a way to further the developments.Rebuild also has too much romance drama around Shinji imo.I don't really care about the animation quality so long as it clearly delivers the story,which is what matters;this is probably tied to the fact that I like reading books and don't really care all that much about modern movies since they're all CGI and smoke and no juicy writing meat. In conclusion Original>Rebuild. But that's just my take on things.
They made the art more complex with time but I always prefered the original version. Even on the DVD they ended up changing some musics and framing and it always bothered me. I only had the original run on VHS. One thing that's strangely awesome, the Netflix version has the original dub and timing for japanese (there is actually both TV and DVD versions.)
To those who say that the original made ir better, i think you might be misunderstanding what the rebuilds are meant to be. The rebuilds are not a remake of the original series, but the evolution of it and of their characters. You might enjoy more one scene or the other, but it has no sense to make a comparison of which one made the scene better because they are supposed to be different things
Orignial is much better, the tension building up to the elevator over many episodes makes it such an exciting moment especially coupled with the silence wondering whos going to break it first and being suprised when its rei.
@@Kulade yeah, the voice acting didn't bother me *that* much but it's the structure of it, personally I think they just don't give it the time it needed to be impactful and the focus is placed too heavily on like. kind of making sure the viewer understands exactly how everyone feels at every moment of the scene when really they could've just let it be, idk
@@koenko2 idk I don't think the scene is supposed to be as tense in the movie since in the show at this time Asuka can't pilot her eva at all due to her being in a mental state where she really hates everyone and everything including her eva. In the Rebuilds she's generally less angry and in the scene she's only upset since she isn't going to be able to pilot eva 02 because they have to seal it away temporarily, and is mad that Rei is trying to tell her to get over it while Rei still has her Eva. We don't expect Asuka to be half as mad in this scene as she is in the show. The movie isn't the same story as the show.
I know some people forever hate dubs, but the actress who dubbed Asuka in the 1996/2003 versions was SO GOOD! She did a great job of switching from sounding snobby to straight up pissed.
I think the most important take away, is in the original series, the tension between Asuka and Rei is CRITICAL for setting up The End of Evangelion. Asuka needs to have her mental break. I also want to comment on the way their designed and look. The original did a much better job at portraying the fact that they're children. Their faces are much more chubby and round, whereas in the rebirth they placated way too much to fan service.
Terrible arguments in these comments. 'it was the budget that made the scene so dull'. I don't understand isn't that part of the charm and why it's so good and unique. Even if it was the budget that caused it I think that makes it all the more special and all the more unlikely for us to experience, the tension between the characters portrayed to the audience in such a way has never been done before and because of the circumstances it happened. It's a phenomenon in my opinion and one of the reasons Evangelion is one of my only 10/10 Anime. You can be a pessimist and hate the scene and say there's no thought into it and it was just budget and that's fine. But I think it's brilliant.
Why nobody gets that the rebuild movies are the way they are because it is another timeline where the souls of everyone are more mature because the soul learned the lessons... because in “the end of evangelion” the souls “escape” because shinji wants that the people could have another oportunity... in the rebuild you can see the old structures of what happened in the third impact, the people just don’t know what they are and look at them as monuments...

The original dub actress of Asuka is amazing, a lot of emotion and range. You could hear her bratty tone and her growing defensiveness and inferiority complex, it was all so clear in her tone and it all sounded so real and genuine. Also she genuinely sounded like she was about to cry out of frustration like a girl her age would.

@@amaterasu3325 Well, I actually think it’s both. Sure the elevator scene saved a lot of time animating, but it also conveys just as much, perhaps even more than a fully animated scene and dialogue about tensions between the EVA crew. A bold, yet brilliant solution.
It’s interesting to see how limited budgets force indie creators to use creative solutions to close the gap between them and a big budget production.
"She doesn't even realise that she likes him!" contrasted with the meaningful silence after "I hate you! I hate everyone!" really is the heart of the difference between these characters.

One idea that I’ve heard which sounds pretty strong to me is that the rebuilds are meant to be hated. The main theme of the original was to do with the dangers of embracing escapism, but then ironically fans used the franchise as a means of escapism. As such the rebuilds exist to give an idealised anime which says to the audience “Isn’t this what you wanted?”, where characters easily grow and overcome difficulties, and where love interests play an overly large role in the story. This scene reflects this pretty well with the silence being broken very quickly, to call the audience impatient, then having the Rei stand up for herself uncharacteristically before them having an unrealistically meaningful conversation.
So I suppose in some respects hating it isn’t the worst, I suppose it would miss the point even more to love it. Also this could all easily just be wrong and it could just be the weird haram world, but I doubt the same guy responsible for a masterpiece like the original would manage to fail so badly by accident afterwards.

The original has such a crescendo, 1:46 ending with this 1,2,3, it's so nice.
The new one is just another hint in favour of the loop hypothesis around rebuild, like Rei already knew what Asuka was about to do.
The reason why there was long pause on scene was because they can't do any more scene to fit it on a 20 minute episode and they are very tight on budget.

I hate the argument that money is always the problem when anime goes bad. Scheduling can be much more devestating to a show; if a director gets sick for a few days and can't come in things like story boarding slow to a hault and it's hard to really animate anything. And for weekly anime a few days of bad scheduling can throw off an episode. Soooooo Anno prolly saw there was problems with schedule+his psyche and went for more punctual scenes where we have to think and interpret the meaning for ourselves.

Which fits right into all the other hints in rebuild that Eva takes place in kind of a cyclic/looping timeline.
That's what I think about the Rebuild, it's a multimedia piece rather than just a film, the whole thing forms a story and a philosophical discourse.

Rei catching Asuka's arm always catches me off-guard. There's something about that decision...
It’s all bullshit in a way. That happens because it would make the weebs happier that rei was more of a person and lead them into thinking that the rebuild has a happy otaku ending. It was a giant troll of course, which is why I like the rebuilds so much. I find it hilarious when the whole world goes to utter shit as if Hideaki Anno is saying “here it is, this is what happens when you weebs ask for these unrealistic realities”. Can’t wait for the fourth rebuild, Anno’s weeb-trolling abilities are on point.
Thats because the original is so memorable and the rebuild feeds of off the nostalgia of the show. But, scince the slap is blocked the scene says nothing. Just that Asuka is wrong while the original told us about rei and asuka. Asuka gets on the path to her mental breakdown and rei is shown to be a doll and do as ordered.

For example in the opening scenes from rebuild, you can see some giant body outlines in the same crucified position that the mass produced evas were at the og third impact.

itsNEi I feel like both scenes serve a purpose. But I prefer the rebuild because it actually shows growth in the characters. I feel like people don’t actually know what the point of the rebuild was. And it’s purpose is to be Evangelion but be completely different at the same time.
In the rebuild we see that Asuka still has an inferiority complex. But instead of bottling up her feelings. She actually stops and talks to others about her feelings and even puts others before herself. She refuses to let her emotions consume her in the rebuild. Even taking Rei’s place in piloting Unit-03 just so she could have a dinner party with Shinji and his father even though she has clear feelings for Shinji. OG Asuka was bitchy and never grew. Sure that was one of the themes of the OG series but the rebuild isn’t that. The original series never really deconstructed the themes. Just had characters act in those themes for the sake of acting in those themes. And at points became painful to watch because it was the same over and over and just getting worse each time. Hell Asuka even acknowledges REI’s Struggle by looking at her bandages. But no one ever brings up scenes like when talking about the rebuild. They just like shitting on it for no reason. With their only argument being “ They’re not as good as NGE because” and I think that’s bullshit
And when Rei says she’s not a doll in the rebuild it holds so much more weight Bc Rei has next to no development in the OG series. Where in Rebuild there was lots. She was more outgoing and genuinely wanted to be a person. Her relationship with Shinji and his father felt a lot more tangible than it did in the OG series. Making her ironically feel like she’s not a Doll.

Juju I literally said “OG Asuka was bitch and never grew” obviously pointing at her devolution. Understanding the characters doesn’t mean I have to like them. I understand. But the point I was trying to make about the OG series was that the characters really just had one defining trope and ran with for the entire series which wasn’t bad it was just kinda tiring to see. And the characters just got worst as the series went on. I personally like the fact that rebuild Asuka wants to be more independent and doesn’t have time ogle over men. She doesn’t have some gross perverted mindset of what love is. And rebuild Asuka is the literal example of what Asuka could’ve been had she actually let people in. And when I say “it was the same over and over again” I’m not fucking wrong like once you hit the middle point in the series if just her failing over and over again and being depressed about it. It does show her devolution but it was essentially the same thing just at varying degrees. And her resolution in EOE felt a little weird to me as it kinda came out nowhere. I know she longed for the love someone deep down but it happened so late in the series. It felt kinda weird imo. Also she didn’t do a good job of masking her depression. The other characters were just selfish and refusedto help her. They acknowledged that she was in pain. And never reached out. Neither side made an effort and that’s what led to her downfall. I like that rebuilds have strong sense of communication in them. Even if Is a different message than the OG series. Because it’s supposed to be. I didn’t miss the point of her character I just found it boring and obnoxious. Like she was annoying at the beginning. And got depressed at the end. And I’m supposed to feel for her? She acted like bitch throughout the entire show, up until the very end not letting anyone in because she was depressed and I’m supposed call this accurate deconstruction. That is exactly what I meant by they just play into tropes. I know shinji’s character is supposed to be unlikable but I actually his character a lot more than Asuka. The original series does nothing to deconstruct asuka. Just showings us glimpses of her past and her progress downfall. And that’s not deconstruction. There was no subtlety to how human emotion were conveyed in the OG series. It made it a point to talk about them whenever it could. But that couldn’t stop the obvious tropes that were present and if you really at the OG series. You will see that characters and nothing more that just tropes. And when the question. Why should I care about Shinji? Why should I care about Asuka? You probably respond with some shit like. That’s the point why should you care about them? That’s the point of their characters your supposed to wanna care about them less or hate them. Well that I say if the characters bring nothing new to the table and are bad at the beginning of the series and bad at the end. Coming to their own resolution that is still pretty shit. Then what makes these characters better? I literally just pointed out the reasons why Asuka’s character is flat. But at this point I don’t care. I’ve said my piece.

Why do the rebuilds feel like Shinji's in a harem
Because the rebuild series is just an elaborate troll on Anno’s part. He’s sabotaging his own work to mess with the same kind rabid neckbeards, weebs, etc. that sent him death threats after the original run. Shinji in the rebuild is a surrogate for the otaku and how he doomed himself and the world to save his waifu instead of letting go or growing up, causing the third impact. That is the Curse of Evangelion. The fans are stuck in a perpetual childhood the same way Star Wars fans bitch about the new trilogy. Kaworu is Anno’s surrogate trying to show those people life can be good if you grow up, improve your character, and leave toxic fandom behind, but they’re too far gone down the rabbit hole, becoming hikikomori. The manchild. Evangelion, and especially Rebuild, is a mirror held to the viewer displaying a hard truth one must learn: you can’t regress into fantasy.
Because everyone wants to be in Shinji's shoes so the Rebuilds finally gave in and jack off audience members with fan service.

I feel like the original tension had more tension between them, esp from Asuka's side, but I also like the rebuild scene where Rei doesn't take Asuka's attitude towards her and stops her from hitting her.
The coloring in the DVD release is admittedly better, but I love Asuka's expressive animation much more in the original release. Glad it came back in the rebuild.

The most meaningful art comes from a context of restriction. Yes, they were short on budget but we can't deny this was a genius way to capture the character's psychology that probably wouldn't have happen without the money context
the way they did the rebuild is so good because it is intentionally made to be a "normal" anime with no under tones or message and it really feels more unsettling then the originals just because it is so different from the originals.

Yeah, I think it was intentional and there was a connection with the original. Also in Rebuild, Asuka didn't say that she hated Rei at the end, although Asuka was still jealous to her and called her stupid, but there was no sign of hatred. Rebuild Asuka always felt alone and didn't need friends before, but hearing Rei said something like that made her felt uneasy and later she realized that being with the others weren't bad as she thought.
DVD release is my personal favorite. I like the animation and the voices are nice
Kinda don't like how the rebuild makes this scene about Shinji. The original showed more of Asukas inner workings, her competitiveness towards Rei was about her wanting to be the best pilot and feeling inferior and like she needs to prove herself, and then rebuild watered it down to fighting over a boy.

Its like the rest of the rebuilds - EEEVERYTHING is spelled out for the viewer. No mystery, no thinking or feeling about whats going on. The rebuilds are the definition of "tell, don't show". Kinda sad.
I didn't know about the budget restrictions were a reason for the extended elevator scene. Nevertheless, I'm still astounded by the original cut. The animators had to make difficult choices in what to include in the final cut, and everything they animated must serve a key purpose since they didn't have the resources to animate everything they wanted. They used the pauses to heighten tension, to reflect, or to simply build mystery. There were many scenes like this in the anime so that's why I didn't feel it was out of place.
It's kinda understandable it would look so different in the DVD release when you think about it. The original NGE went through a hellish development cycle to get the episodes to air on time so they had to cut corners
I love the fluidity of the rebuild and the light/shadow aspect. But the original is amazing on its own. The tension buildup, and the way they act is amazing. They act how one would in that situation. They have so much on their shoulders as teens having to act like adults.

Honestly, I’ve seen some people complain about the one frame entire scenes, but I think it really shows the tension between characters. Other than this scene, the scene where it’s one frame of Shinji holding Kaworu is genius. Shinji has to make the decision, and it’s somewhat reasonable for him to take some time to think whether to kill him.
This scene has more backstory than The Seven Deadly Sins

Ok gonna rant for a sec. You've probably seen that comment in this comment section that says that in the Rebuild's version of this scene is about "boy trouble" but I want to rant because that comment was obviously made by someone who hasn't seen the scene. There is ONE extra convo about Shinji but the rest is essentially the same. In 2.22 Asuka has just had her Eva taken away. That's what the conversation is about. The Rebuild version of this scene, like the rest of the Rebuilds, is more literal than metaphorical. Stop making stuff up to make the Rebuilds look bad.

It’s what I love about old school Eva, it’s the long drawn out moments of silence. Another one is the Shinji and Kaoru scene with the creepy classical/opera music playing. Just standing there staring at each other before…..”PLOP!”

While throughout evangelion and especially in much later episodes they use still frames to cut time and costs, this scene was always planned to be this way, hidaki anno has always stated he wanted the long awkward silence while they were essentially trapped together.

Don’t get me wrong it probably was supposed to be long and awkward but later episodes def show the budget issues to which the creators admit which is why they constantly remake these scenes. Honestly sometimes accidents can lead to genius tho
I gotta watch the rebuild, but I always prefer that cool 90s art style over the more modern, updated art style. Not that it’s bad by any means, just the way I drink the tea.

Evangelion has to me one of the most perfect examples of "no money, but make them better because of that".
It true they ran out of it, but at the same time they made the scene completely meaningful with that "long" and for someone "too long" still scene. I can feel much more their feeling uncomfy, while in the rebuild you can't do it, you have no time.
There's another long still scene in my mind, the one where shinji comes back after his first flee. He saw Misato at the train station, and there's a good 40sec of still scene. And it's perfect like that, I didn't imagine anything else considering their psychology, their behaviour, and what's happened before.

Good morning! I’ve never seen Eva so here’s my honest thoughts~
At first I thought the original was paused (to let the rebuild play for a bit) but then when they both started going at the same time I realized that wasn’t it. Tension was definitely building cuz of it! The rebuild seems to have nicer animation but it also felt,, cluttered. A lot of dialogue. Not totally sure if there really is just a lot of dialogue or it just felt as much because of the two audios going. That said while the animation does seem a bit more expressive in the rebuild the original lines seemed to have more of an impact-straight to the point with less flowery words. 2003 dvd improved in small things with the animation. Overall I think 2003 was the best but rebuild still had nice animation!
Tldr I’ve never seen Eva and the rebuild animation is nice but the og has more impact and the 2003 was able to add little things to the animation for extra pop
Original had worse animation but way more time for characterization and making the characters feel really alive.It being a series meant that it hard more time for smaller things that really help sell a character.Meanwhile rebuild as a series of films didn't have the luxury of all the time to slowly build up tension psychologically.This is why rebuild has way more action and drama in it and the dialogue is so dense because it has to cram a lot of information into films.Overall I like the original way better than the rebuild because it had time to let you think about things while I kid you not I had to pause once every 3 minutes of the rebuild,besides I don't really get excited about big "robots" beating the shit out of eachother and I liked the original because of the psychological implications of it with the evas just being a way to further the developments.Rebuild also has too much romance drama around Shinji imo.I don't really care about the animation quality so long as it clearly delivers the story,which is what matters;this is probably tied to the fact that I like reading books and don't really care all that much about modern movies since they're all CGI and smoke and no juicy writing meat.
In conclusion Original>Rebuild.
But that's just my take on things.
They made the art more complex with time but I always prefered the original version. Even on the DVD they ended up changing some musics and framing and it always bothered me. I only had the original run on VHS. One thing that's strangely awesome, the Netflix version has the original dub and timing for japanese (there is actually both TV and DVD versions.)

To those who say that the original made ir better, i think you might be misunderstanding what the rebuilds are meant to be. The rebuilds are not a remake of the original series, but the evolution of it and of their characters. You might enjoy more one scene or the other, but it has no sense to make a comparison of which one made the scene better because they are supposed to be different things

Orignial is much better, the tension building up to the elevator over many episodes makes it such an exciting moment especially coupled with the silence wondering whos going to break it first and being suprised when its rei.
I've literally never seen the show and without context the first two were beautiful and the rebuild was just annoying imo

The context: the actual, minute-long silence is for both budget-saving and to really build the tension.

@@Kulade yeah, the voice acting didn't bother me *that* much but it's the structure of it, personally I think they just don't give it the time it needed to be impactful and the focus is placed too heavily on like. kind of making sure the viewer understands exactly how everyone feels at every moment of the scene when really they could've just let it be, idk
@@koenko2 idk I don't think the scene is supposed to be as tense in the movie since in the show at this time Asuka can't pilot her eva at all due to her being in a mental state where she really hates everyone and everything including her eva. In the Rebuilds she's generally less angry and in the scene she's only upset since she isn't going to be able to pilot eva 02 because they have to seal it away temporarily, and is mad that Rei is trying to tell her to get over it while Rei still has her Eva. We don't expect Asuka to be half as mad in this scene as she is in the show. The movie isn't the same story as the show.

I know some people forever hate dubs, but the actress who dubbed Asuka in the 1996/2003 versions was SO GOOD! She did a great job of switching from sounding snobby to straight up pissed.
I think 2003 is my fave.

I think the most important take away, is in the original series, the tension between Asuka and Rei is CRITICAL for setting up The End of Evangelion. Asuka needs to have her mental break.
I also want to comment on the way their designed and look. The original did a much better job at portraying the fact that they're children. Their faces are much more chubby and round, whereas in the rebirth they placated way too much to fan service.
I agree that the original was better. However I think the art style wasn't meant to make them look older, imo they were just trying to modernize it
Terrible arguments in these comments. 'it was the budget that made the scene so dull'. I don't understand isn't that part of the charm and why it's so good and unique. Even if it was the budget that caused it I think that makes it all the more special and all the more unlikely for us to experience, the tension between the characters portrayed to the audience in such a way has never been done before and because of the circumstances it happened. It's a phenomenon in my opinion and one of the reasons Evangelion is one of my only 10/10 Anime.
You can be a pessimist and hate the scene and say there's no thought into it and it was just budget and that's fine. But I think it's brilliant.
Proof that rebuild are a continuation of the original series
Why nobody gets that the rebuild movies are the way they are because it is another timeline where the souls of everyone are more mature because the soul learned the lessons... because in “the end of evangelion” the souls “escape” because shinji wants that the people could have another oportunity... in the rebuild you can see the old structures of what happened in the third impact, the people just don’t know what they are and look at them as monuments...
