What emotionally affected me the most in the manga was the scene where Toji broke down crying and told Shinji HE was the pilot and he was so god damn scared. And then the gut punch afterwards when Toji dies instead of just losing a leg hits even harder.
anno originally was going to have him die in the anime, but one of the few rules he had to follow was that no kids were allowed to die on the show. but in the anime he effectively dies, he leaves the story completely after his incident...
The Shinji hate is strong on this one, sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't hate on him and actually try to understand where he's coming from and why he acts the way he usually does unlike most of the vocal majority seems to. Like seriously do people seriously not realize being Shinji is suffering? And unlike most mechas, using the EVAs actually hurt you when damaged and if your robot happens to lose a limb like Unit 01 did during the flashback fight in Ep 2, guess what's going to happen to you? You're going to feel ALL OF THAT, still want to get in the robot now?
@@TheNestPossesed Yeah that was a weird direction they took Shinji and I won't defend that little incident. But tbf End of Evangelion in general has multiple things that are questionable, such as Misato insinuating she was gonna sleep with Shinji even though she's a grown woman and he's a young high school boy. Even if she didn't really mean it (especially since she was dying at the time) it was still a weird thing that happened and I'm personally not okay with it.
Idk, shinji used to be hated a lot back in 2000s and early 2010s but nowadays i feel like most people defend him and excuse his actions by saying he is realistic and whatnot (i like his character too btw don't get me wrong, i would defend him when necessary as well). The last rebuild also redeemed him in many people's eyes by making him become a hero that saves everyone. I think asuka is the one that is hated way more unlike shinji most people won't even try to understand her actions and will say she is a bad person. And tbf the last 2 rebuilds didn't do her any favor in that regard. Even as someone who likes asuka's character she was extremely annoying in those last 2 movies and her actions are unjustifiable. She is supposed to be "mentally 28" yet she acts anything but. Holding onto a resentment for a 14 year old boy for 14 years is just so immature. People always say she is abusive and i used to disagree with them because near all of her so called "abuse" scenes were literally slapstick comedy but in the last movie she genuinely was straight up physically abusive, maybe for the first time in the whole series. That is why i prefer her OG series/EoE and manga version. Rebuild asuka is a parody of her character and basically all her positive traits were put into mari because of splitting one character into two. Shikinami is what happens if all you take from soryu is her angry side while putting the cheerful and funny parts into mari. In a way asuka soryu is a deconstruction of manic pixie dream girl trope. A quirky and energetic girl that as soon as she comes makes the tone of the series happier and more lighthearted and in a way kind of pulls the shy introverted MC out of his shell with her extroverted personality (in the early episodes like in 8 9 and 10 they slowly learn to get along, yet all of that comes tumbling down in the later episodes). In actuality though all of that is just a façade and she is just as broken and depressed if not more than the MC, which is why she can't really help him either. She is no "dream" girl. This applies to all the characters really, none of them can help each other because they all have to deal with their own issues. Yet the rebuilds misses this point with the character of mari who is basically what asuka soryu was trying to subvert. A quirky and perfect girl with no flaws (literal mary sue) who helps the MC and is on his side till the end. Yup, a manic pixie dream girl. The last part i said applies to most things in rebuilds honestly. Most of the things the OG series was trying to subvert rebuilds do in a straight way. For example, OG series used "fanservice" in clever ways by making it relevant to shinji's character and show how he is a hormonal teen. All of that build up and finally in EoE it shows how those supressed emotions come out when he is at his lowest and is given freedom to those things. He gives into his urges. His "id" in a way. Instead of asuka's nudity being something titil lating for the audience it is disturbing. That is how it subverts fanservice in a way. The rebuilds on the other hand completely miss this and just put random btt shots for the sole reason of the enjoyment of the audience. Like how in the last film the camera focuses on asuka's crtch for no reason or the hilarious btt shot of sakura in a scene that is supposed to be serious etc. Sorry for the rambling, just wanted to share some of my thoughts and why i feel like rebuilds miss the point of the OG series in a lot of ways.
@@HectorCotto97 Oh and one more thing, misato suggests sx to comfort shinji after rei 2's death in episode 23 too so it doesn't come out of nowhere in EoE. Most things that happen in EoE are just pay offs of things that happened in the series. Misato's biggest flaw is, the only way she knows how to help people is by using her sxuality. Because she herself uses hedonistic pleasures like drinking and sx as a way of coping. Also it's weird that people complain so much about some of misato's actions towards shinji to the point some even call her the word that starts with the letter "g" and rhymes with broomer yet nearly everyone overlooks the relationship between mari and shinji in the last rebuild movie. Some even saying it was the healthiest relationship in the series. If you see their relarionship as romantic (which the movie kind of hints at) then that becomes extremely creepy. At least misato wasn't seriously interested in shinji. She was just trying to help and encourage him in her own ways, as wrong as it is.
what i love about the original manga is that it feels like each character’s defining traits were shifted just ever so slightly, and all of those shifts had natural impacts on the story that were followed into different events. Shinji’s slightly more confident and less desperate/unsure of himself. my favorite moment that defines this is when he asks if rei is straight up a robot. thats what any normal person would think when meeting her and it stems from the fact that this man isn’t solely thinking like an eva fan. misatos more caring, rei is more human, asuka is less dense and stubborn. but all of these changes are very small, which makes it a very interesting story to read after watching eva from the perspective of someone who loves breaking down writing
I loved the manga really appreciated the time the author took to establish parental roles for Misato and Kaji. I loved the entire ending. And that last panel misted me up something fierce. I prefer the manga over the show because despite the show having more interpretive meat on its bones I just can't find enjoyment in it. It's been dissected and analyzed to death to the point where I can't distance myself from the discourse surrounding it and just watch it as a peirce of entertainment. The manga remains entertaining throughout while also giving you food for thought and a positive perspective on identity and humanity.
I wish we had more Eva videos like this. One thing I dislike about Evangelion is that all youtube content we have are memes/character analysis or smth like that
I love Eva content on yt! I used to eat that stuff up but I totally agree. There are some channels that have dived into more niche Eva topics but they’re kind of hidden. I saw that no one had really made a video about the manga spin-offs and figured, why not? lol
@Sup Mofos I'm glad people want to make those. They're not for me anymore because I've exhausted those things, but I watched them at some point. So it's no hate, but yeah. Hard to find Eva content I want to sit through.
Eva fans don't want leave there toxic bubbles. All they do is talk about the same crap over and over again. There so much more to Eva to make videos on like other characters, other relationships that are not toxic, spin off games etc... Instead they use NGE for there own personal therapy and there own creepy fan projects. Not even trying to be unique nor creative. Eva fans are the most annoying fans on the net.
Manga Toji messed me up so much that I stopped reading it for a while. That one scene in particular with the jump cuts was so painful. Still do recommend it however.
Shinji didn't take the train because he saw empathy from Toji. He finally felt validated for what he's doing and thus, wanted to keep getting more of that sweet sweet social validation. When Misato arrived the train was already gone and he didn't get into it.
The other thing I liked better about Asuka's introduction in the Manga is that it's stated that on the way there, she's single-handedly defeated the Angel attacking the fleet. Usually I'm a fan of show don't tell, and it would have been better if we could've seen this battle in the Manga, but it still provides evidence that Asuka is actually good at her job. In the anime, she gets her shit rocked in every battle apart from a couple times working together with Shinji and her battle with the MPEs. Even though the viewer is led to believe that she's a prodigy and probably should be the best pilot out of the three, it's rare to see any actual evidence of that. It's a small addition, but I think having her solo an Angel is a much-needed addition to her character and justifies her higher-than-thou additude.
episode 4 is one of my favorites from the anime, and the scene where misato and shinji stare at each other across the train tracks for nearly a full minute as an announcement including the phrase "those with small children please keep an eye on them" plays out of the station speakers is a big part of why. it's such a great bit of visual storytelling-we don't need to hear misato say the words "i desperately want to have a family and be a good caregiver" in that scene for us to understand everything about her in that moment. the scene probably wouldn't have translated super well to manga because it's not a fundamentally time-based medium like anime is, so it makes sense that the author took a more straightforward expositional approach, but all of those same sentiments are absolutely there in the anime
i totally agree... so much of the original show focuses on the difficulties of communication, and neither shinji or misato are the type who can outwardly say how they feel, almost ever. but the show bends over backwards to tell us what the characters are thinking and feeling through painstakingly constructed lighting, framing, and cinematography. it demands you pay full attention to all the details which i really respect and love, in my opinion it makes their moments of tenderness hit much harder
I actually read all of campus apocalypse, it’s like Eva meets the magical girl genre and is fairly entertaining. Shinji and Kawrou do the making out in space thing at the very end, like what happened with Madoka and Homura in Madoka Magica. There’s plots to steal people’s energy with computers too, which is also straight out of sailor moon. Personally I’m mad Shinji only got a gun and no transformation sequence. We were robbed.
I understand your argument but I think there is intense comedic potential in a magical girl show where a transformation sequence begins with the music, effects and all but it abruptly cuts to the girl pulling out a desert eagle instead
Angelic Days and Ikari Raising Project are definitely the best spinoffs we've had from the franchise so far. They're surprisingly good considering how insane the rest of the alternate universe end up being.
@@Eva01-jy2qu7pu9r They're so good visually and have such insanely cool as fuck soundtracks that the bad stuff they did to the story doesn't really hit as hard. Yeah the rebuilds kind of just feel like a "evangelion hype moment + fanservice compilation" video you could find on youtube if it was like 7 hours long, but the fact that I still cried at 3.0 + 1.0 when Rei died proves that it's not all bad. By comparison, the others mentioned here kind of have the "I don't give a fuck" energy inbued in them where they're not really trying to be seriously good or atmospheric.
@@Eva01-jy2qu7pu9r Yeah they do. If it weren't for the visuals and soundtrack, I would not like the rebuilds. There is no change made in the rebuilds that I think is good from any story or plot perspective. It's if Eva was worse but more of a spectacle. It's not meant to be compared to the OG, even if it's obviously worse. But now we're just arguing semantics, because I agree the rebuilds suck anyway
I like how kaworu is this one guy that appears in 1 episode late in the anime and dies and in every spinoff including merch he's a main character and shinji's offical ship(even after rebuild3+1), makes me wonder if kaworu was meant to do more in the original anime
the raising project manga is the less apocalyptic universe where shinji's mom never died. i actually enjoyed it the most out of the ones you talked about, it's kind of cathartic to see how these characters could have lived without suffering
I remember reading the first few volumes of this back in the day. I LOVED Gendo's loveable idiot nature. Like when he punched a computer virus. Did Shinji end up with Rei or Auska in this version? I know Angelic Days had him with Auska.
@@zg468 That's a shame!! Thank you for telling me. I had hoped Rei would finally be shown some love since Shinji ends up with Mari in the anime, and Asuka in the Angelic Days Manga. Poor Rei just can't catch a break!
The main difference I saw in the Manga and Animes differences is probably how each author looks at the world, I love Ano, but he is essencially a Japanese Redditor compared to his traditional, Buddist counter part. Making Manga Shinji much more relatable as I can understand his person more easily
i read the manga first and im currently watching the anime. from what ive seen sp far, the vast differences and focuses on characters in both media is really different and really reflects what type of industry theyre in.
i remember when i was 12-13, i went to Half Priced Books to only find “Neon Genesis Evangelion Campus Apocalypse”…i was obsessed with Evangelion at the time (and still am) and it was actually pretty good. and it was cheap!! I’m pretty sure it’s super unlikely to find the manga now, but i remember little me being pretty blown away that Shinji carried around a handgun as a replacement for an “EVA”..but anyways, thank you to whoever sold and gave away those Evangelion Spin-off mangas to Half Priced Books, younger me ate that shit up
I just finished reading Sadamoto's manga, and man. It's amazing. I also agree it's better than the anime. I thought this video would be just about the manga, but seeing these other weird adaptations is just as good lol. Now to watch the rebuild movies
Angelic days is legitimately so good. It's goofy yeah, but the ending was super nice but bittersweet. I cried at the end of it because I'm a big baby nerd
4:26 that’s not at all what this scene is. Misato was too late. Shinjis train left. It was his conversation with his school friends that allowed shinji to decide to stay for himself. He didn’t decide while the two were staring at each other. He had already decided. That’s why the scene holds on them so long. It’s about misato realising shinji decided for himself, and shinji getting confirmation that misato did want him to stay afterall
This was a really interesting read, though my favorite by far is definitely Angelic Days. It has so much pleasant charm to it, along with keeping some of its moments in tact.
True. Eva most likely inspired persona in some aspects (like the jungian influence i am guessing) and in return eva was inspired by persona too (in campus apocalypse). That is pretty cool.
While it may be a work of fan fiction, and involve some hentai elements but hear me out, the Evangelion Re:Take manga's are fantastic. They write a new ending across 5 volumes that starts right where End Of Evangelion leaves off. Some of the most faithful fan art I've ever seen and it still hits upon each characters main themes all while having a satisfying ending to the series. For those worried about the hentai elements you can pretty much skip all that as it doesn't play too much into the story and only takes up about 40 pages in total across the entire 5 volumes. It's a fantastic read
Actually as someone who didn’t know anything and jumped head first into the ova and movies I was blown away. I actually felt like I understood everything. It was weird how relatable Shinji really felt bc I’ve felt a lot of those things too and dealt with similar problems. “Obv not going into a fucking humanoid robot over 200 ft tall and shit” but just in general a lot of real life problems similar to that. I never hated any of the characters, they where all understandable and I’ve felt every single one of those emotions. Even when the story tried to get trippy with its visuals and stuff it still makes sense just buy listening to it. To me it seems as if the OVA and movies are about growing up, maturing, finding your place in life, trying to find happiness in day to day living, looking for meaning, finding value in yourself rather than looking to others for it, expecting nothing from anyone or anything except through yourself, and etc. they’re where a lot of main themes in the ova that honesty all ring true but come together in a beautiful way and bring a lot of prospectives to the table. Don’t know what the manga is like but I guess I’m about to find out some of it.
The Angelic Days manga was my first exposure to evangelion in middle school so I kind of thought the whole series was like that and avoided it for years hahaha
I started reading the manga before I ever watched the show, was quite young, probably around 12 or so. I absolutely loved the story, art-style, sci-fi action & characters. Then once the volumes stoped coming out I actually caught up on the series and the movies. Over the years I continued getting the volumes as they came out, took a break at some point because I wasn’t up to date, until I then finally got the last few volumes a few years back when I realized the series was actually complete. Obviously the show and companion movies are great, but I will for ever prefer the Manga. It had a huge impact on me in various ways and has basically accompanied me from childhood, through my teen-age years to adulthood. If you are a fan of Sadamoto’s work I would highly recommend the art-book “Der Mond” featuring a bunch of his colored Evangelion illustrations as well as some further unrelated illustrations that are also absolutely stunning!
I checked out Der Mond and it was great! I suggest his other art book Carmine as a companion peirce to it. Some fine full color artwork from Eva, girl who leapt through time, FLCL, hack, and more.
@@Thehotdogman Awesome! Tbh I didn’t know about Carmine, I got Der Mond ages ago and haven’t been very up to date. I will absolutely check it out, thank you for the recommendation!
this was a rlly fun video to watch !! i havent seen many videos about the eva manga and side content so this was really cool. and man some of these manga seem absolutely insane 😭
(If you can + want to) I recommend looking out for the campus apocalypse omnibus. It compiles everything, and with the recontextualization through rebuild 4.0 that tree of life scene with gendo hits kinda different now. I think looking at it overall as just a basic anime comedic spinoff its fun and worth the read
the official manga adaptation is my favorite version of Shinji. he isn't just a timid little whiny baby and actually feels relatable and sympathetic. also, he comes in clutch for Asuka when she's about to be devoured by the mass production Eva and saves the day.
I understan you, but Shinji in anime feels more realistic, he grows as person too but its much less "hollywood-y" and more subtle, by the end of evangelion movie he is still this broken weakling but his final choice to accept individualism and reality instead of artificial perfect world was bittersweet but hopeful, he started grasping the right way, Shinji in manga being unstopable bada$$ was kinda jaring, it just did not feel authentic, but I like some elements of manga better, manga for example explored characters more, Shinji and Rei had that sweet moment by the lake in garden, or when Shinji visited her room and it was empty and dirty, and much more
@@krsmanjovanovic8607 Yeah, most anime fans don’t realize that most 14 year old boys aren’t badasses, much less someone with the trauma that Shinji had. It’s more than likely because they see themselves in Shinji and it hits too close too home
@@krsmanjovanovic8607 A lot of of people don’t even bother to read up on the fact that all the characters are parts of Anno, especially Shinji. That’s one of the reasons why Evangelion has such staying power. It isn’t some power up fantasy for teenage boys and man children, but a delicate psychological character study showcasing the affects of depression and the loss of innocence in adolescence. But people want their Han Solos and whatnot so they call Shinji “a bitch” even though at the end of the series he was the only person left standing.
He's more confident than his anime counterpart and it feels way more natural than his Rebuild counterpart. Rebuild Shinji is mostly the same as anime Shinji until the plot needs him to man up, in which case, and becomes an entirely different character in the process. Manga Shinji on the other hand is far more consistent, displaying an extroverted side between battles that grows as the story progresses: making the effort to spend time with Rei, engaging in shenanigans with Toji (like sticking his fingers up his nose to try make Rei laugh), trying to punch Gendo, and not putting up with Asuka's and Misato's BS, resulting in frequent arguing. Part of this is because he was raised by his aunt and uncle and grew up alongside his cousins whereas his animated counterparts were raised by a sensei.
I thought the manga was better up until End of Evangelion territory where shit kind of goes downhill, since Gendo comes off as a cartoonishly bad dude with his funny matrix forcefield powers. I also only think I liked it as much as I did because I read it so soon after I finished the anime that I didn't really notice the stuff that was missing and homogenized it into one thing in my brain. I almost wish that we could have an Eva remake only based on the manga, not to replace the original or anything, but to highlight what makes the manga so different.
While I love a lot of the changes in the manga, I do think a lot of them are kinda odd. The one I specially find bad is Asuka - honestly this version is a proto-Shikinami - a 'test-tube' (clone) who's there to be the perfect pilot for Eva. No longer a character marked by her need to fit into her role that she's attached her identity. I hate that no version of Asuka except for the original version has this and works with it. Makes me sad
Shinji having lots of issues was kinda the point of his character in the anime, so you missed it at all. That said, his interactions with Rei were much better at the very end. At the price of relationship with the Kaoru cat-killer Nagisa !
Nah honestly this Shinji makes more sense. He’s actually responsive to his environment. Which makes the fall that much more hard towards the end. Plus the Real Gigachad version of Shinji is ANIMA Shinji. Bro can’t be stopped
I read the Manga like 17 or 18 years ago and watched the anime for the first time about 10 years later - This is one of the few instances where indeed watching the anime first is the right choice imo. Without taking the time to compare the two releases or even rereading the manga once over the time, I was slightly annoyed by Shinjis behaviour and the fact that everything feels 20% more confusing. Also watching the anime should be much easier/cheaper today than geting a copy of the manga.
I'm not going to put the links because RUclips doesn't like that but if you go to manga life you can find the manga there I'm 2 minutes into the video and yeah people talk about evangelion either the anime or some weird games good to see someone talked about the manga
Manga was what introduced me to evangelion in the first place, I dead ass thought it was a show based on manga and not the other way when I was a kid, hence manga is the most canon to me
I've been watching the evangelion rebuild, and I thought it too was a masterclass in detailing and illustrating the various stages someone like shinji goes through to becoming a more powerful version of themselves, until he started the fourth impact. I really don't agree with that regression of his character. he just shat all over kaworu's kindness and devotion. it really disgusted me
I've read all the detective diary series (well, the 2 volumes, not really a series) because well my local library had it, all up to the ending is fine, but ... the ending makes zero sense, gendos collects all the stones or whatever they are so he could make a wish, which is some bullshit ass wish of wanting shinji to be happy ???.... like if he wanted to achieve that he should just spend time with his son its so stupid
How they disguise this existential contemplation of a series as a cutsie fun school anime/mech anime vibe is so deceptive. Its crazy, especially from a marketing standpoint.
I read the manga that follows the show. Almost everyone in the manga felt like they were changed. Shinji is more like a normal kid with a few issues, Rei is kinda the same but is a little more robotic, Gendo is basically just show Gendo but actually hates Shinji. Auska is kinda the same but I guess is a little less stubborn.
Recently watched all of the NGE series and the movies, I can’t help but feel bad for shinji. He was just a very lonely kid in a chaotic world where he had to defend the world when the world didn’t even know he existed. Remember you have to put yourself in someone’s shoes to see where they are coming from. I get it he SA Asuka but he didn’t know any better, he had no parental figures his entire life and everyone around him had their own problems and priorities. Shinji was depressed and lonely yet no one seemed to care. Misato pretty much hinted sxeual favors for him throughout every version of evangelion. Asuka confused his emotions by acting like he had a chance with her. His dad was a piece of shit who ignored his own son bc he wanted his wife back, his own dad didn’t even realize a piece of his wife is within his son. Shinji had to get into a giant mech and also defended the ENTIRE PLANET AND THE HUMAN RACE. Hate shinji all you want but he didn’t deserve the life he was given he was just a lonely curious boy. I am not justifying his actions he just had no one in his life to point him in the right direction. In the end he made his own choice and decided to stay and suffer, bro took suffering to the literal extent and even then he was treated like trash. Almost no one in NGE is a good person, it’s called life. Everyone wants to be a good person but it’s hard to be a good person when you can cheat, steal, lie, deceive, and most of all be selfish. Again I’m not saying what shinji did was ok he was literally a lost child forced to fight angels trying to kill everyone. That one scene where Shinji is just sitting inside the mech and his brain is being flooded by horrible memories of his entire life…I connected so hard to that one scene and it made me so sad in real life that I wondered how sad and bad shinji must have felt. He must feel horrible and confused as to why he has to suffer so much when all he wants to do is chill and not fight angels in a mech with his moms soul in it. The closest anyone came close to being a good person was Asuka in my opinion. I hated her attitude but in the end when she went out fighting all the angels I instantly changed my hate to love, she gave everything she could to save the world but she got killed simply trying to do something right. Idk im just rambling but hopefully someone can agree with me
Asuka is worse on the manga than she is in anime. Less depth because her character time was cut a lot since Sadamoto himself admitted that he never liked her or understood her. But other than pathetic Asuka's character most other characters indeed have more depth in manga.
I think manga asuka is still better than the rebuild one at the very least. Rebuild asuka was complete character butchering. She is such an unimportant character that she straight up doesn't even have a character arc/development (she had something resembling an arc in 2.0 but too bad later films sh1tted on it). She is only used for fanservice and action scenes.
6:02 haven’t played the game but I read the fandom, and reading it was like “damn shinji is into another red head now, WAIT DID THAT SAY KAJI ENDING? wow so she apparently almost died, oh she is leaving Tokyo 3 ok (mana ending) dang just leaving one red head for another, typical shinji, aw they hug, that’s kinda cute (asuka ending) MAN CALM DOWN I GET THEY WERE FOLLOWING YOU BUT YOU DON’T NEED TO SHOOT THEM, I ALSO GET SHE IS YOUR EX BUT COME ON MAN, HOLDING HER AT GUN POINT IS A BIT MUCH (Kaji ending) wait, so they just run away, awesome ok, kinda wholesome for evangelion, still weird tho (psp ending)
What emotionally affected me the most in the manga was the scene where Toji broke down crying and told Shinji HE was the pilot and he was so god damn scared.
And then the gut punch afterwards when Toji dies instead of just losing a leg hits even harder.

Yeah it definitely makes Sadamotos manga feel less bleak
I loved the manga really appreciated the time the author took to establish parental roles for Misato and Kaji. I loved the entire ending. And that last panel misted me up something fierce.
I prefer the manga over the show because despite the show having more interpretive meat on its bones I just can't find enjoyment in it. It's been dissected and analyzed to death to the point where I can't distance myself from the discourse surrounding it and just watch it as a peirce of entertainment. The manga remains entertaining throughout while also giving you food for thought and a positive perspective on identity and humanity.
And the ending is more hopeful...
Exactly my mine. Also a lot of Easter eggs
Like what gato says to the blonde before shooting her.
The one character I didn't like at all in comparison to the anime's is kaji tbh, all the rest are either better or equally as good albeit different
I saw that no one had really made a video about the manga spin-offs and figured, why not? lol
Don't forget about documentaries on the shows history

Gendo can shoot lasers out of his face
Manga Toji messed me up so much that I stopped reading it for a while. That one scene in particular with the jump cuts was so painful. Still do recommend it however.
In the Shinji Ikari raising project, Gendo straight up threw hands against Ramiel and won, if I'm not mistaken.
Ramiel: *screams geometrically*
Everyone else: Where are the pilots?!
Gendo: *Rolls up his sleeves and takes off his glasses*
@@ChibisporeGendo starts charging a Kamehameha
Rebuild has her one v oneing an angel and it's incredible
episode 4 is one of my favorites from the anime, and the scene where misato and shinji stare at each other across the train tracks for nearly a full minute as an announcement including the phrase "those with small children please keep an eye on them" plays out of the station speakers is a big part of why. it's such a great bit of visual storytelling-we don't need to hear misato say the words "i desperately want to have a family and be a good caregiver" in that scene for us to understand everything about her in that moment. the scene probably wouldn't have translated super well to manga because it's not a fundamentally time-based medium like anime is, so it makes sense that the author took a more straightforward expositional approach, but all of those same sentiments are absolutely there in the anime
i totally agree... so much of the original show focuses on the difficulties of communication, and neither shinji or misato are the type who can outwardly say how they feel, almost ever. but the show bends over backwards to tell us what the characters are thinking and feeling through painstakingly constructed lighting, framing, and cinematography. it demands you pay full attention to all the details which i really respect and love, in my opinion it makes their moments of tenderness hit much harder
"this weapon will be a manifestation of your will... Basically, it's just a fucking gun"
So it's persona 3
"The gun is mighter than the sword"
Actually, considering Hol Horse's tendency for running away, that fits...
I enjoy Campus Apocalypse, ANIMA, and the Rebuild movies
@@carsenmaxwell3336 Eh the Rebuilds sucked. The other mangas you mentioned are crazy but admittedly unique
@@gu3z185 Rebuild didn't try either lol. "Good visuals" and a "good soundtrack" don't mean anything in the grand scheme of things

Some manga from the Eva franchise is genuinely extremely creative even if most of them don’t deliver the concept amazingly.
i remember when i was 12-13, i went to Half Priced Books to only find “Neon Genesis Evangelion Campus Apocalypse”…i was obsessed with Evangelion at the time (and still am) and it was actually pretty good. and it was cheap!!

It has so much pleasant charm to it, along with keeping some of its moments in tact.
omg, the Campus Apocalypse is literally just smt
True. Eva most likely inspired persona in some aspects (like the jungian influence i am guessing) and in return eva was inspired by persona too (in campus apocalypse). That is pretty cool.
Summon the fucking Stand, Shinji
No mention of Re-Take? One of the bests out there.
Not official
Thank the heavens someone is actually talking about the manga
Holy shit Shinji has a fucking stand and its fuckin emperor
The manga is special to me as well. Thanks for the tip about the art book. I'll have to track that down.
I checked out Der Mond and it was great! I suggest his other art book Carmine as a companion peirce to it. Some fine full color artwork from Eva, girl who leapt through time, FLCL, hack, and more.

I think looking at it overall as just a basic anime comedic spinoff its fun and worth the read
Christ bless you, EVA slice of life was something i didnt know i needed lol
This makes me want to pick up and read some Evangelion, I like this vid
the official manga adaptation is my favorite version of Shinji. he isn't just a timid little whiny baby and actually feels relatable and sympathetic. also, he comes in clutch for Asuka when she's about to be devoured by the mass production Eva and saves the day.
@@TheSmokefan14TS Ano himself said similar thing! He hates seeing Shinji because he reminds him of well... himself
I love that you took a picture of your manga, I might even say that I like it more than seeing scans.
Gamer Rei is canon?! This is wonderful news!

0:33 No sir, you are not allowed to drop absolute bars like that and just carry on like nothing happened
The Shinji in Sadamoto's manga is a gigachad sigma male and is thus the objective best version of the character.
Shinji having lots of issues was kinda the point of his character in the anime, so you missed it at all.
That said, his interactions with Rei were much better at the very end.

This shit give me sad time Every day When i see Asuka Or Shinji
yeah, and shinji and kaworu made out so thats soemthing you can add.
5:15 This is unironically how I shared Evangelion with my friend. We watched the anime after.
Idk im just rambling but hopefully someone can agree with me
31:07 we were finally going to get a rare wholesome moment between the duo, and shinji just goes full fucking pedo mode instead 🤦♂️
How many times u gonna kok loud asfff… my neighbors can hear
Asuka is worse on the manga than she is in anime. Less depth because her character time was cut a lot since Sadamoto himself admitted that he never liked her or understood her. But other than pathetic Asuka's character most other characters indeed have more depth in manga.
I think manga asuka is still better than the rebuild one at the very least. Rebuild asuka was complete character butchering. She is such an unimportant character that she straight up doesn't even have a character arc/development (she had something resembling an arc in 2.0 but too bad later films sh1tted on it). She is only used for fanservice and action scenes.
