    Asuka amazes me sometimes in just how insecure she is. I mean... For the majority of the series, there are a total of 3 people in the entire world who are capable of saving humanity from complete destruction. No one else can do that, only those three can. Rei, Asuka and Shinji are literally the most important people who have ever existed. And that still wasn't good enough for her. She had to be the best of those three, her entire identity was wrapped up in it.

      It's strange...I felt devastated by the ending of the show, while End Of Evangelion left me feeling hopeful. But they are thought of in general to be the opposite. I think for me, it had a lot to do with our perspective. At the end of the show, we as the audience are trapped in Shinji's mind, and know that what we are seeing is just the last chemicals being dumped as he dies (or whatever you want to call it). I think both endings are great, because you learn about your own beliefs based on how they make you feel.

At over 828 metres (2,716.5 feet) and more than 160 stories total, that gives 5.175 meters/story or 16.978 ft/story. So that is 2105 feet per minute. I don't know where you got 4000 ft/min.

    The movie Jaws would be a perfect example where the limitation produced greatness. The robotic prop shark broke during the filming so Spielberg had to work around that and come up with ways to hint at the shark without actually showing it. Script had to be heavily altered on the spot. To quote Spielberg: "The film went from a Japanese Saturday matinee horror flick to more of a Hitchcock, the less-you-see-the-more-you-get thriller."

    As someone who makes comics, time is such an underrated and valuable factor. I'm really jealous of animation and live action for it. Using time, you can achieve a tone that's impossible with still images. Most people might not realize it, but I think that's one of the big reasons people wait for anime vs manga.

    This scene is almost obviously attempting to portray the atmosphere of awkwardness, self-projecting hate, and indecisive, almost inconclusive feeling of jealously being subtly expressed by Asuka, while also presenting the lack of emotion and feeling of self-worth and being that Rei II feels. The complete silence and immovability accents this by placing us in the minds of our characters, without having to say a single word.

It represents the combined conscious of all people and every moment that had previously happened to further progress shinji’s self exploration. He technically does not exist anymore therefore the only possible way to progress the story is through past scenes, people, moments, backgrounds, and memories.

  • @riz-ytb
    @riz-ytb 7 лет назад +283

    Evangelion. A series where you can make a 13min long video essay about a 53 second still shot. Love it.
    One of my favorite parts of the whole scene is that Rei is the one who breaks the silence between. When Asuka first met Rei, she went all up in her business blocking Rei's book from the sun and asserted her dominance. Asuka has always been the one competing with Rei throughout the series even though Rei has never cared for it and did her best to ignore it.
    Throughout the series, Rei has been gradually learning to care for the people around her mostly due to the fact of experiencing that same sort of concern from Shinji. That's why this scene is so genius to me, because what we have here is a complete 180 of Asuka and Rei's early interaction. Asuka is now trying to ignore Rei's presence now that she no longer has that pride to back her up and Rei trying to give her advice because she genuinely wants to help her.
    The progression of 2 characters and their relationship is conveyed in a 53 second still shot. (Why is this show so damn perfect?)

      Rei's development I love too considering how it's almost not noticeable. Just the fact further on in the series she actually starts to make eye contact with people. Something she never really did even in conversation unless with Gendo. And after a while for the first time ever SHE's the one to start conversations. Little subtle changes in her character like that

      Draconovici Dracoola - It will depend on the poem and what should I include like its plot or history or even the format of the document. @Ajourneyofknowing 6 лет назад +1

      Draconovici Dracoola - Can you list that poem more specifically as I’m not sure if I found the right poem “Erza Pound”. Well like music since there’s millions of poems I give everything a equal chance but don’t just focus on the famous poems all at once first. When I find or search out media I check the author’s other work, inspirations from other work, or similarities to others. My most recent discover was the paint on glass animation process used on The Old Man and the Sea from accidentally typing fantasy of fantasy not in order and that also led me to what’s near unanimously regarded as the best piece of animation 1979: Tale of Tales. My feelings aren’t blinded as I don’t have extreme love/hate opinions on media like cult fanboys or angry mobs without factoring the opposite side. I tend to have a forgiving & optimistic view towards things as I like the Star Wars prequels, Barry Lyndon, Nickelback, and the theatrical movie of Pink Floyd The Wall. I can see beauty and good elements even in bad stuff and try not to be unreasonable harsh. I dislike this series but not as bad as other haters and respect some aspects like the animation. It’s not the worst of the pretentious scenes the series gets or the worst thing involving a elevator (2010: Devil). I cant control negative or positive interpretation on something weather the product is literal face value or deep symbolic artistry. It just the show is problematic to me enough that my opinions puts it overall in negative territory. Well here’s my points on minimum word counts: yes the word count is problematic as somebody can write a great essay with great pacing and use of grammar but has to be compromised for extensions or have limited grammar knowledge. It just have to use the precise words to get the point across. I can flesh out extremely on some stuff but not every subject that I ever received like explaining the process of fish hatcheries. Let’s not call out names as that will seem more of a escalated attack on the person instead of their ideals or diverting from subject of discussion. Well it will depend on how much effort and time it took to create the fountain. Even if the level of determination is well enough, I can’t guarantee it for most high art sculptures created today with deeper meaning.

    • @Ajourneyofknowing
      @Ajourneyofknowing 6 лет назад +1

      Draconovici Dracoola - “Restraining myself from liking” the word is Abstain. Thank you for confirming Ezra as the poem. It’s the worse with finding poems as they’re simpler and I have to be specific on whatever details I can get for the specific version. “Suspension of pompous fool”- I don’t want this debate to devolve into name calling like I’m “Anti-Anime/Japanese” or statements like “You don’t like NGE, they you don’t like any piece of good cinema. I have a higher appreciation of good media and won’t loosen my standards because Japan has proven themselves with their golden age of cinema. Elizabeth Cowling and my fellow friends interpretations of “The Fountain” is laughable or without facts to support them. There are reasonable and believable theories to art but there’s a limit to how stupid they can be. I can interpret in a way -2001 a space odyssey: It foreshadows the death of communism/ NGE: the rebirth of the internet in 2666/ Oldboy: the debate on what color is that dress from 2014/ The Thin Red Line: how Mel Gibson made Hacksaw Ridge historically accurate/ Angels Egg: The green pigs took the angry birds eggs/ The Wall: the reverse mindset into Chicken Little/ or the high art of Rick and Morty (the fanbase is getting absurd) but I’m pretty sure the creators of those projects didn’t intent their work to mean or include that. NGE is in my opinion the textbook/dictionary definition fit for the word “pretentious”, the world is too unexplained that it leaves open plot holes and problems for how the world and Angels works, and I mostly feel contempt for the cast. Yet it’s ignored because of its symbolism void of meaning. You can’t inject theatricality imagery and expect it to be deep and meaningful. If I insect the symbolism and imagery of 2001 or passages from the Bible into Batman and Robin, does that make it good?

      Its all action and badassery and "GET IN THE FUCKING ROBOT SHINJI" until episode 19 or 20 then it gets super meta and very introspective to an absurd degree. If you like psychological movies like "Come and See" or slow paced "action" like Star Trek then you'll probably like it. It also concludes with a movie that has almost the exact same arch of being action baddassery until the 50 or 60 minute mark, then it gets crazy and meta again.

    We don't need less scenes like this. We need more. Film (and by extension, television) is a unique artform in its ability to manipulate time. Too often in modern films, there's this desire to keep everything moving at all times. It stems from a (not unfounded) belief that the mainstream audience will get bored. But silence can be incredibly effective. It allows time for the emotions of a scene to stew. Relief becomes more permanent, uncertainty becomes more terrifying, and as showcased in this scene, tension becomes more excruciating.

    • @BestWayKilla

      If I want constant still shots, I'll read a comic book or look at a painting. The point of "animation" is, ultimately, to be animated, is it not? You can slow things down without literally grinding to a complete halt. 53 seconds was about 38 seconds longer than necessary to convey what this scene was intending to.

    • @PhilAlm92
      @PhilAlm92 5 лет назад +14

      BestWayKilla Absolutely not! The whole point of art is to relay emotion. If the scene was any shorter we would have probably still known what the characters feel like in this painful situation, but we wouldn’t have FELT it. You, the viewer, is trapped that elevator just like Rei and Asuka

    • @BestWayKilla
      @BestWayKilla 5 лет назад +19

      I didn't "feel" anything in this scene other than desperation, specifically to pad out the scene to take up more of the episode's runtime. The whole "It's to increase the tension!" argument would hold a lot more weight if there had been any movement in the scene whatsoever: shuffling in place, looking in a different place than directly straight ahead, or hell, even fucking BLINKING, anything to prove that they're actually still awake and not braindead. People tend to fidget during uncomfortably long elevator rides, and they certainly don't stand as still as a terracotta statue. *That's* the reason people criticize this scene.

      when watching the episode you're more likely going to feel how the scene intended to, but isolated and without context, it's definitely not a good watch as you're watching almost a minute of nothing happening, they do blink, but you might find the director's cut version of this scene better, as it adds a little head nod so Asuka isn't completely still.
      it's perfectly fine to dislike this scene, but claiming the people at the studio were just hacks, and Evangelion was never good, based on production issues out of their control is not a good argument.

    The fact that this needs defending is the reason why anime is never taken seriously, because of it's viewers. If a 1 minute silent elevator scene was done in some european art film (or hell, just an indie film, it doesn't have to be so foreign and shit) viewers wouldn't hate it as a first reaction. You watch it, and then you try to analize what it means to the plot, the characters, why the director did it that way, etc. Afterwards you can still dislike it if you want, but you will not be dismising it at face value. Now, yes, movies and animation are different. Maybe there were production limitations. But never the less, it was a conscious decision from it's creators to work around this limitations this way, to provoke a certain feel on the viewer. That's art. I really think anime fans need to broad their watching habits. Look for more experimental, outside the box storytelling and don't dismiss things just because you think it's a weird approach. Now, to watch the video...
    Edit: Evangelion and Funny Games in one video. I never thought that would happen but it's making me happy.

      Icy Cold Hands Anime fans get pissed everytime their cartoons become art films, most of them are kids who watch anime for cool shit. As a person who enjoys films as much as anime, I thought it was weird that Eva was so convoluted.

    • @ZeStreD
      @ZeStreD 7 лет назад +64

      The issue stems more from anime getting mroe and more ground in the Western world. It used to be pretty obscure but now almost every child is familiar with anime and a lot of kids can say theyve watched at least one anime growing up. A lot of these people were young and watching anime like Naruto for its cool factor and were KIDS so of course they had no interest in deeper meaning or artistic value. Now they start toexplore more anime and happen upon shows like AoT that fit what theyre looking for when they want to watch anime.
      Until they find Eva because its well known in the anime community but these people are used to action shows with little deeper value so they get turned off when they realize its not actually about fighting robots. A lot of the new/"normie" anime fans that are cropping up watch anime for its face value entertainment and arent looking for deeper meaning or artistic value, this is why modern anime has shifted to A LOT of fan service and a lot of action over substance shows to fit the wider audience. I cant really blame this new swath of anime "fans" for wanting what they want and I cant blame the industry for shifting towards what works for business but its unfortunate that shows like Eva become less appreciated by the new "less intense but more numerous" anime fans and over time less and less artistic anime is commonly produced.

    • @Baykko
      @Baykko 7 лет назад +12

      ]ITs not a problem of anime but a problem of the target audience. Anime is still seen as Cartoons so the people that watches it comes to it expecting it to be as superficial as cartoons are, then when faced against shows like Evangelion they are struck with distaste because the show wasnt even meant to them in the first place.

    • @rikowolfin4984
      @rikowolfin4984 7 лет назад +7

      Eva and Funny Games have the same problem, they try waaay to damn hard to have deeper meanings in everything that they come off as pretentious and some times rather stupid ( Funny Games worst case being the time rewind scene that happens out of nowhere that pretty much ruined the film for me ).
      Eva has a ton of flaws, most of which has to do with it cast of characters mostly being annoying ass holes literally all of the time making it hard to watch as there isn't even one character you could like for a good reason. The only reason no one really tries bringing those problems up is because the anime community has marked it as one of the best despite not being that great when compared to other animes. In fact it seems people only talk about two things, the great action scenes it has and the 'deep meaning' it has.
      I would kinda want to see how it would have turned out if it was made to be more straight forward, with the animation it had and the time it was release I have zero doubt it would have still been extremely popular, though not as much because I doubt it would have brought as many meme's as the original did along with people talking about how weird it can get.

    • @Ouchthathurt843
      @Ouchthathurt843 7 лет назад +59

      Riko Wolfin I highly doubt Eva would even be popular or talked about twenty years later. If it was straightforward there would be nothing to theorize on or talk about, it would just be your standard Mecha show with some cool concepts. The unlikeable characters is what makes Evangelion what it is, a show about broken people trying to do their best to save the world even though they can barely take care of themselves. I don't find really find them unlikable personally, I can empathize why they act like that, but I definitely get why you don't like or route for them, it really depends on your tolerance to people like that. I have a lot of people in my life I love that act similarly to them, so it's far more personal for me. Evangelion as whole is entirely personal, that's why it's so convoluted not because it's super deep or fucked up, but because you either connect to it or you don't.

    I feel like something should be clarified here about Eva's Budget Issues. You make the argument that the show never had budget limitations and point to the animation quality of the first half of the series as an example. What should be said is that as the series went on, as it touched on more adult subjects and content thanks to Anno, the show started to get budget CUTS. This, added to the situations you pointed out, made their issues far more drastic. If the series had more money they could have had more staff working on the project and something like re-working an entire episode would not have set them so far behind.
    But I do agree that a budge was not the reason for all of the long cut scenes such as this one in the series. Most people just get too impatient with a show having expectations of action and fighting. I felt the same when I first watched the series in my mid-teens, expecting another action show like Gundam Wing and being completely thrown off by the feelings Anno was trying to get across. After giving it another chance in my 20s, going at it with a different expectation, it became my favorite show of all time because I had a different mindset going in.

      This is actually what most rewatchers experience. I first watched this series when I was a kid and thought how cool the action scenes were and getting annoyed at how slow the 'filler episodes' were in between arcs. Years later after experiencing severe depression and serious real life issues I decided to watch it again, then I understood that Shinji wasn't really a wimp but an actual good representation on a flawed human being. Also every introspective scene had more weight to it now that I could finally resonate with it's themes and see my own issues reflected on the screen in a cathartic way.

    I think it's an unpopular opinion at this point (and I thought I was part of the majority!) but episodes 25 and 26 are actually my FAVORITE out of all of them. And they're my favorite EXACTLY because of how simple and minimalistic they are, because of how they manage conveying philosophical and psychological notions so well without doing anything too artistically complex, and then on the other hand they're also a representation of someone's thoughts, so of course a lot of it is going to feel very abstract, and the white background, I feel, could represent Shinji's completely fogged up mind as he comes to terms with who he is and how he can move on from there. I really think those episodes, while not particularly complex, are perfect for the purpose they were written for, and I feel like stripping a work of anything that's not strictly necessary is also a skill. It's easy to appreciate the Eva scenes when they fight against an Angel, and it's easy to say "oh, good animation" in very adrenalinic scenes where no frames repeat and everything's on the move. But there is a lot of truth in what you said about this scene. No hyper-realistic animation, no other decision could have conveyed the amount of awkward discomfort that scene actually managed conveying. And I think people's reactions to it is proof that it actually work. Standing in an elevator for a protracted amount of time always feels SO uncomfortable, and it's palpable, and everyone feels it. And just looking at two people clearly give extremely negative vibes in silence while being forced to share the same space, it's even unbearable to the point sometimes it feels like you should skip it to get some relief, but that's the point. I've never felt this scene was out of place. I've never felt it was too long or unnecessary, because its purpose was clear and it made sense this way, exactly this way.
    I really wouldn't change anything about the way Evangelion was made. I would not change any animation loop, any protracted still frame, any basic animation put on top of a monologue. Because I love weird but necessary directorial choices to death. And this is not to play the pretentious cinema fan (I don't care for that), but some things, when kept simple, express so much more than they would if done in a more complicated, time-consuming way.
    I'm so glad that someone else actually got the point of this scene. Sometimes, with people who watched Eva, it's like nobody got the very basic point of this series. And in turn, I don't get why people complain so much that there aren't enough mecha fights when clearly that was not the point of the show past the first episodes.
    It's flawed, so it's good like this and doesn't need any retouch.

    This is precisely what I've been saying for so long. To me, Anno's mastery of cinematic staging is displayed not in the intense battle scenes, but in his ability to turn difficult limitations into meaningful scenes. Rather than detract from the work, he made these limitations further heighten its impact. If that isn't true mastery, I don't know what is.

      Luca D?Innocenzio I've just finished watching the series and about to watch the movie. But for me the reason i disliked epsiodes 25 and 26 were just all the loose ends and lack of explanations which I've heard the movies clear up.

      it is true that when it got to be more psychological and character-driven, it got more interesting. but i do feel like it distracted or rather it pulled the carpet from under the fans or people who liked the bigger, over-arching plot rather than its characters. so i can see why.

    • @ruben4257
      @ruben4257 5 лет назад

      hialyssah To be fair Eva was NEVER a plot-driven show, and no matter how good the history and worldbuilding where. From the beginning to the very end of EoE we never had any real explanation about anything. We get some info and the characters point of view and understanding of what they've learned and thats about it. Since the beginning the show was always about the characters and their psychological struggles. That was the whole point. Everything else from the fights to the plot was just means to get there, so it only makes sense that the series would end exclusively with that:
      The culmination and effect of everything that happened on Shinji's psyche, the one and only focus of the anime

      Good wording romano. That's exactly right, Anno was never afraid of showing ALL of society. And that he did, whether or not it's embarrassing for us to accept that's just how it is.

    I paused at 10:08. because i knew. it makes sense that people would hate that kind of scene. there was not escape from it. it did not cut away or change focus or anything. it stayed right there, focused on the non interaction between them. it was uncomfortable the same way it would be if you were *in* that same elevator at that time. the same way people are made uncomfortable by a couple fighting in public, or when someone says one thing in a conversation that makes the rest of the time spent with them incredibly awkward. it creates discomfort. people hate discomfort. they put up with it when necessary. but they still do not like it. but if all we ever do is stay in our comfortable little bubbles, how do we change and grow? how will we see things that need to change? whether it is in us, society, or others? half the time seeing these things, to me at least, shows exactly how people need to change, how they do things wrong. it is from there, after thinking upon it, that we can come up with other choices, other routes of action that would be better. maybe I am reading too much into this, but i don't know....maybe we should think more deeply into these things.

    This scene was perfect because it encapsuled the tension between Asuka and Rei. There wasn't any need of dialogue, just the sound of the elevator, the watcher felt everything else. Making it very special.
    Evangelion had many scenes like this one. But this is my favorite out the bunch.
