This is not my theory and i think i read it either on Reddit or RUclips. That kiss in the end is meant to signify the fact that Misato recognises and treats Shinji as an adult now at that moment. It's her way of building Shinji's confidence up for what he has to do. Certainly trying to save the world is a big enough task reserved for adults, yes? So why not see Shinji as an adult? That kiss and that cross was Misato passing the baton of her responsibilities and was also a teaser for Shinji to come back to her after whatever he has to do. A little something to look forward to. As adults. Of course Misato who is dying will never be able to "do the rest", a lie willingly told to someone she cares about truly and because its what Shinji needed to hear. A real goodbye would hurt more than the bullet in her back.
In realistic perspective, i am not condoning a woman in her late 20s who kisses a boy in his teens though. But the apocalypse was starting. Humanity was about to die. And if Misato, in her dying moments, wants to do one last thing for Shinji, one last act of love, she'll damn well do it.

@@nicowebb9374 its pretty regularly shown that she doesnt consider shinji as a serious love interest lol. in the first episode she makes a joke about it. and in many ways clearly views him as a kid. especially when you compare her behavior w shinji to her behavior w kaji, someone she’s actually attracted to, it’s completely different. i think its more that the only way she knows how to get what she wants / communicate most effectively is thru physical intimacy.

Some people laugh, but I think Misato knew perfectly well that she was going to die and was reconciled to it. There was never going to be any "next", this scene just shows how much trouble Misato has with communication and love, which she can show mainly in a physical way. She really didn't know what to do, and she had to, so she followed what felt natural to her to give Shinji some reassurance by showing that something was waiting for him after he entered EVA, that someone would be waiting for him to return. I'm not endorsing it, but Misato and Shinji's kiss was nothing romantic and it's worth knowing that because Misato treated Shinji like family

The only interpretation about this moment that I think makes sense: Misato is manipulating Shinji the best way she knows how to interact with men, through a sexual lens.
She's tried everything already. She literally dragged his catatonic body through NERV HQ to save his life. She tells him to go on living. She gets angry with him and tells him to snap out of it, that trying to run away won't solve his problems. She tries to be compassionate and understand his pain. She threatens to curse his memory if he doesn't do the right thing. She even tries to use reverse psychology "fine, don't do it," and tells him the consequences of what will happen if he doesn't pilot the Eva.
The only thing that seems to snap him out of it is his desire to feel close to someone else. The same reason for the infamous "yogurt" scene at the start of the movie. After his friends leave, Asuka is in a coma, he just killed Kaworu, Kaji's dead, his father hates him, he needs to feel close to someone, so he does something fucked up to try to feel a connection. Misato manipulates his desire to feel "at one" with someone else (the whole symbolism of Instrumentality, just like Misato, Asuka, and Rei were saying to him in that repetitive vision about "being one with me.") So, all out of other cards to play, Misato tries to make him feel an emotional connection to pull him out of his despair.
From a psychoanalytic angle, Shinji is the embodiment of a libido-destrudo conflict: an inner conflict between the libido (a life force that drives one to seek out pleasure in life) and the destrudo (the "death drive" or the instinct for a living thing to seek out death for oneself and/or life around oneself.) Which can also be seen in his instincts to seek out pleasure (escapism/running away/listening to the same music on repeat) and his duty (piloting the Eva, destroying the angels and being exposed to death all around him.)

Yup pretty much. Misato doesnt know how to get close to someone to make them feel affection beyond physical intimacy. And shinji finally responded to that kiss because what he desires more than anything despite the conflict with his fears of intimacy is to be close and at one with someone.
Which is why shinji cries further when the elevator starts. He realizes she used him by appealing to his need for intimacy without being serious about it just so he could get into the eva. The ironic thing is, she did have affection for him but she herself doesnt know how to show it genuinely beyond physical intimacy so it looks like a farce to shinji when misato just didnt know any other way to show it to him.

I just realized that Thanatos is playing in the background of this scene. Very interesting how this gut wrenching scene is accompanied by a sad but happy song. It is almost like the creator threw that in to express how the death of someone is accompanied with happiness which is a sick idea but Shinji was believing at the time that everyone around him should die. He thought that everyone should die and that would give him happiness. As we see in this scene the music that's sad but happy plays during a part of his dream almost becoming true.
Technically, it's a variation of it, but it's also the only time that the second portion of Thanatos is heard in any capacity at all in the original NGE timeline. I believe this version of it is called "Substitute Invasion" on the End of Evangelion soundtrack CD.

Each and every one of their performances was spot on.
The scene really isn't complete without showing her bleeding out immediately after this, which sort of reinforces the fact that she's putting on an act to get him motivated. When the end of the world is nigh, there's no holding back.

It's part of her character's development in her past. Sex was the only thing that satisfies her and fills her empty heart. It's the only way for her.

Me encanta esta escena, y un plus es la actuación de Marisol Romero como Misato, sencillamente le quedo excelente la voz, de sus mejores personajes a mi parecer, y la propia escena de por sí es una obra maestra, es Misato no solo dándole a Shinji el consejo y motivación que necesita, si no además como si se estuviera hablando a ella misma, además está escena terminando teniendo impacto al final de la película, con la cruz que le entregó a Shinji, nada más que decir, de lo mejor que ha producido el mundo del anime y de los mejores doblajes del anime (aunque a mucha gente no la haya gustado)

It would illicit the same reaction out of everyone else except you and despite the obvious context of this scene, you all ignore the fact she was trying to motivate shinji to save the world. Again, basic math here, she had no intent to have a sexual relationship with shinji like you all suggest.
@Iliketurtless0001 weird? yes, necessary? In her head, yes. Misato spoke to shinji the only way she knew how to and had no real sexual intent.
I think Misato's speech in the ADV dub was a lot more compelling. This one is very good, but there was much more raw emotion in Allison Keith's delivery in the ADV dub of End. That and the immortal, "SO FUCKING WHAT IF I'M NOT YOU!?"
All I know is that Substitute Invasion is one of the best tracks on the Eva OST.
