*IT'S TIME TO DIMENSION THE DICE!!* 🎲🎲
We had a lot of fun getting our hands on the product and making this video! It was a bit difficult to set up (we had to super glue the figures down to their bases and tape the mat to the table, but it worked out) and record, but hopefully you all enjoy it! There's actually a lot of depth to the game and even a huge fan community on Etsy that recreate the figures, dice, counters, and even make custom playmats, so this would be fun to revisit if people want to see a more intense, full experience! 5000 Likes and we'll try to make it happen!
Gba made a game you know
@@rooseveltmitchell1913 We're well aware!
Wait, there's a whole online community for this game that still exists? That is wild. I mean good for them, but wow talk about a long suffering crowd.
Absolutely makes me miss my old set I got it when it was released and my parents lost it
Can they not respawn the dice monster
It just took me 20 years to see real people play this game.
Totally worth it.
Real
They didn’t put enough effort into this side game but capsule monsters got a whole anime 2 video games and toys in relation to it.
There is a Dungeon Dice Monsters GBA game it is quite fun lots of replay value in it.
same here! but NGL, this looked pretty fun!
I hope one day Konami finds it in the kindness of their heart, and brings Dungeon Dice Monsters back from the grave
I dimension Baronne de fleur
It’s just too much for a physical game, but another video game would work. If they did another video game like the old days(like spirit caller or reverse of Arcadia) it would make a good side game in the game. Think Gwent in The Witcher 3.
It's the GY now
@@rhinox9292 I think an actual, complete board game, without boosters to buy separately, could work. The best way to have DDM in current times imo would be as a (revised) board game that 2 people can use to immediately play the advanced game, and maybe having expansions themed around some type of monsters or special field. You know, like actual board games. The original DDM tried too much to be another collectible game, almost competing with its TCG counterpart in a way.
Yeah this day and age would be a really good time to bring it back, they could just put it on mobile you know play it on the phone
Really enjoyed this game in my childhood. Would love to see you guys revisit it with more monsters and game options!
@@realhollowapathy what world 🌎 are you really from dude? 🤔
He didn't even respond to you That's sad we need to get this to the top, and I totally agree with you this is a really cool game and seeing all the expansions would be awesome
Would you like to try out a custom DDM with online play? I am developing one and I have a discord server where we get matches going. Let me know if interested.
A part of me does wish Dungeons and Dice Monsters stuck and we could actually still play it today if you wanted and it could be a side event at like YCS(s) and stuff
Preach man. This game was actually fun despite having some flaws.
I'd love to see a current Gen video game!
It may have if Yu-Gi-Oh! remained being about games as a whole instead of becoming about cards.
I know it wouldnt be as nice, but i kinda wish there were more people just 3d printing or making models for this so we could just print em out and use a wiki for the card info
If it had came out again later on with more effort it could have been… but those paper “dice” layout sheets were not it. If Bakugan did whole unfolding balls, Konami could have easily made unfolding dice.

“So it’s just like Duel Monsters.”
"Oh my gawd it's nothing like duel monsters!"
God I love a good Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged reference.
Hey, my game is nothing like duel monsters!
.....my game uses dice.
@@aTalkingPizzaDuel Monsters also uses dice, Duke. And coins too.
This different because dice very important for this game. We can not attack if not have attack crest, we can not move if not have movement crest, we can not defence if not have defence crest, we can not use effect if we not have trap or magic crest. The dice in this game is more crusial item then duel monster.
Here's a tip to flatten out the board, put a piece of glass over it or tape it to the underside of a coffee table. Maybe sandwich it between two pieces of glass.
Yep. That's what I do with my TCG boards, as I don't have a proper board that isn't made out of the cheap paper that comes with stracture decks' boxes.
blow dryer also will work.
Just run it through a laminator basically irons it for you
If you don't have access to equipment like a laminator, glass panes, etc and you don't want to get tape on your board and damage it, reverse the folds (mountain-valley and valley-mountain) then cover it with any piece of cardboard or other rigid weight distributing flat material big enough to cover the whole surface, and stack weights on it and let it sit overnight. Heat from a hair dryer helps but is not necessary.
@DaakkuuYRS get them laminated that's what I use to do cause I actually liked the art work on alot of them I had like 20 laminated playmats at one point
As a kid and I not only had the starter set I remember I also got an equivalent of one booster pack for this game. The sucky part about it is that it only comes with one figure and card Per booster pack and the monster I got was beaver warrior. Even in a completely different game it’s still a vanilla monster.
Dude, beaver warrior is the GOAT.
Haha I was in the same boat. My booster came with Gator Dragon though
The boosters I was able to get my hands on were Darkfire Dragon and Twin-Headed Dragon. At last, something to make one of the tribe effects relevant, except oh no it only buffed Buster Blader even harder.
I’m gonna dump a lot of what I think about this game just because there’s usually no opportunity to since nobody plays this game.
1. As fun as this game is, it seems like a common occurrence that each player just rolls and passes because they aren’t getting the crests they need to do anything. Yaranzo is the perfect monster to have on a team to help with that as he allows you to trade any 3 crests for and 1 of your choice.
2. While having defense is important, most of the time you don’t get to use it because the opponent will just wait until they can bring out a strong enough monster to OHKO yours through their defense.
3. Thunder Ball is OP in this as is all other monsters with “destruction effects” since there is very few ways to play around them. Blast Lizard is the worst offender, being able to destroy anything on the board by paying enough Magic Crests.
4. One of the best ways to start building your path is to make it so only 1 space is accessible to your Monster Lord. It’s much easier to protect him that way. I usually use the path that’s shaped like an S sideways and then seal off the other side with a second path. Going straight for the opponent is also a viable strategy to rush them before they can get set up.
5. There’s a great community for Dungeon Dice on Facebook where we show off our latest collection additions or ask gameplay questions.
6. This game is ripe for homebrew like adding effects to some monsters because of you have a full collection accessible, it’s just not viable to run your favorites. Dark Magician is strictly worse than Summoned Skull or MOBC and Red-Eyes and strictly worse than Blue-Eyes.
7. Flying is an ability some monsters have where at the cost of needing double movement crests to move 1 space, they cannot be attacked by none flying monsters. This mechanic has made some frustrating games where you just lose if your team either doesn’t have an out to Flying monsters or your one out was destroyed.
I think that’s enough for now but if anyone wants to talk about the game, I’m open to conversation!
I was just thinking about this too! I was wondering if you had any suggestions about rebalancing the game mechanics?
@@TheClearSummer Off the top I think having a universal crest trade in mechanic would be helpful so that way one player isn’t at a huge advantage just because they run Yaranzo. Maybe a 4:1 system would work. I’ve definitely had games with maxed out spell or trap crests simply because I didn’t have monsters to utilize them. Other than that I think adding effects to the numerous vanilla monsters would help balance out the game. I did like how Paul and Alec re-played the same monsters after they were destroyed. That would bring the power level of monsters like Thunder Ball down significantly, and would also let you bring back in your outs to Flying monsters if they were destroyed.
My friend made Skills for this game. It allows you to play this game with more options. And it is fun to play with diffrent characters and all the mosters in the game. (we made carboard cut outs for monsters with stands)
In that Facebook group, is there any interest from people in trying to hack the GBA game? Or is it just such a complex pile of spaghetti that it’s basically impossible to hack?
@@endymallornunfortunately there’s not a lot of talk about the GBA game, I would say the most is that there’s a guy who makes physical versions of the GBA monsters. I myself only occasionally play the GBA game. I ran it on an emulator with a cheat to get all the monsters so I could build whatever team I wanted and then put the save file onto a GBA flash card.
I remember getting a starter set for Christmas. I even remember the Gameboy advance game too. Enjoyed them when I was younger.
I played the hell out of the Gameboy game!
Same here my brothers
So there is a gameboy game of it. Interesting. I'm sure it costs a ton to procure.
That game was really fun !!!
The gameboy game is interesting and can get tough sometimes. No instructions in game to help you play. It is an ok game but if you do not build your pool well, a single game can take a long time to get through!
The board and dice pieces should've been magnetic. That would've made play MUCH easier.
And the buy in much higher. At starter sets of any game the no1 priotity is always affordability
I mean the ocg version, if you can call it that, did have the unraveling dice gimmick.
With a little bit of engineer these guys can have a lot of fun.
"Can you guys ever forgive me?"
"Only if you promise to stop using that Annoying theme music."
"What theme music??"
And when Duke stopped. It still plays in our heads... and hearts.
"Nothing is sexier than a rocket powered fist"
I got to meet LK 10+ years ago and brought up Duke's initial episode. The theme music MADE that episode.
"When I first made the episode, I thought 'This is the worst episode ever'. Then I added Sexy Back and it became the best episode ever.
I remember playing the Dungeon Dice Monsters game on GBA (I think it was GBA) and it was so easy to cheese the harder opponents with level 1 monsters. You just build the path straight to their monster lord and could block their ability to summon entirely by spamming level 1 summons.
Can I spam my millennium rod into ur dark void??
i remeber they had a level 1 that could increase the attack of all level 1 by 10 so i would just swarm the field with them
Once you got all pieces of exodia you could also keep then safe very easily by summoning them out to the left and right edges of the board while the opponent ai would try to shoot down the middle to your monster lord
Would you like to try out a custom DDM with online play? I am developing one and I have a discord server where we get matches going. Let me know if interested.
I would absolutely love for you guys to explore what else DDM has to offer, with more monsters the game really opens up and is a ton of fun!
What more monsters? The game is like extinct. Finding the booster monsters is near impossible. It's better to just play the Gameboy game.
@@jeanpitre5789 Well I was mostly responding to the pinned reply that they put up, since the said if you wanted to see more. Also, there are some ways of getting a lot more monsters for a decent price, such as getting the Japanese starter set, since that comes with 10 instead of the 6 that we got in the English version. Some of the monsters are the same, but there is a lot more in both quantity and variation.
Print them off .... Like its not an offical tournament 😅
played this a bit back with a group and it was a blast. against stronger monsters the group had a house rule that you can expend resources you had no use of (or any resource really) to roll a d6 dice for an evade attack chance. each spent resource increased evade probability so if you spent 4 you had to roll a 1-4 to dodge an attack, but you could only do it once a battle for balance reasons.
overall fun game, would love to see you guys do more!
Paul missed the perfect opportunity to say; “dimension the dice!” when he summoned Vorse Raider. Like they did in the anime.
Fun piece of trivia that was in the Japanese version of the anime that was glossed over in the dub was Duke/Otogi making a deal with Pegasus to produce the game, which is why there are Duel Monsters characters in the DDM, it was in universe cross promotion, which is also why his DDM ace, Orgoth the Relentless was made into a Duel Monsters card later on.
But it was mentioned in the dub. I saw it recently.
I had this board game as a kid.
It was awesome.
I thought it was really cool in the anime.
I liked the idea and creativity of it.
Would you like to try out a custom DDM with online play? I am developing one and I have a discord server where we get matches going. Let me know if interested.
I was totally into this and bought up all of it. It took a couple of years but I did eventually get every figure released in the US (which by the time I managed it, they were about to be discontinued). My friends never really liked it as much as I did, although I knew a lot of people that played the TCG.
Still have it all in a box somewhere.
ETA: Some things I noticed weren't mentioned, while some of it is pertinent, plenty of it isn't with only the Starter Set...
*You only get 10 summons in total for the game, you cannot have any duplicates of a monster, and when they are destroyed they are removed from the game and cannot be Summoned again.
*Dice are meant to be chosen randomly. Ideally, they'd be like Scrabble tiles, pulled from a bag you can't see through.
*Summoning was based on the lowest Summon Crest rolled. So if you rolled two Lv3 dice and a Lv2 dice, the Lv2 Summon Crest would mean you summon a Lv2 monster.
*The Japanese version DID have unfolding dice. (I tried to get an entire collection with all the Japanese sets but it became too hard to find them...). They were plastic with snapped hinges, you'd press in on them and they'd collapse to make the path.
*There were some rule changes for the Western version that didn't exist in the Japanese version. In Japan, you rolled twice per turn but the 2nd roll was only with dice that didn't have Summon Crests.
In the West, you roll once, but if all 3 dice are Summon Crests, you get to Summon a monster 1 level higher than the lowest Summon Crest rolled.
Also, Japan had limits on items and their duplicates, the Western version did not.
*Each player was meant to have a dice pool of 12 total dice (15 in Japan)
*Lv4 monsters were pretty uncommon. Stuff like Red Eyes, Blue Eyes, BLS, Dark Magician, Exodia, etc. were Lv4. They were also the hardest to pull from the boosters.
*There is no mercy rule. Even if you Summoned all 10 monsters and they all were destroyed, the game could still technically continue. Additionally, no items akin to Monster Reborn, Call of the Haunted, etc. were ever put into the game.
It'd be amazing to see you guys make a follow-up video using proxies of cards from all of the DDM sets. I know this won't do the game justice with how nice the figures are but maybe substitute them for paper cut-outs, monopoly pieces, army men, etc..Playing through with just the starter pack just doesn't feel enough.
If I remember right, there's a Tabletop Simulator version with all the stuff from the official releases, both the physical and the GBA game.
Yup, there is, but I doubt they'd go for that. One can only hope. @@ee822
I wonder if there's 3d print models?
@@wfTitusnope - nothing good exists and the stuff that does has issues (models are physically broken and whatnot)
Let me elaborate - there is some content from Table Top that someone ripped from one of the Yu-Gi-Oh games, but that has a limited set of "iconic" monsters (like Cyber dragon, Blue-Eyes, Red-Eyes, etc). Those rips work for a game with no animations or need for proper geometry but once you convert them to STLs to print you encounter all kinds of issues (that's aside from the really thin edges and other issues that a physical model would have if it formatted correctly)
Would you like to try out a custom DDM with online play? I am developing one and I have a discord server where we get matches going. Let me know if interested.
The Japanese version of this game actually had dice that unhinged to make the path. The English release alone had the premade dungeon paths.
@@bclagnese proof?
You're round two adjustments where great. It really added strategy and tension. Great video.
100000% Yes please do an entire series of this. It was such a fun game and it's a shame it never got popular. We need a fan made game with everything from the video games and collectibles.
I’ve been pretty into Minis for the past few years. One of my favs is the DDM Parrot Dragon. Feels like a relic of the past, and I truly don’t imagine there are a lot of them out there anymore. What a memory capsule.
I saw the reel and it triggered memories so I had to find this video! I absolutely loved this "spin-off" game. The little circle dude with arms was one of my favorites for whatever reason.
I think this is the only board game that includes an ABACUS.
it's a very elegant solution to the problem of tracking several numbers though, i feel it should be more common
I think there is tho…… can’t remember what it is but if I’m not mistaken it came in this tabletop game collection type set. It would have been an “old people” game to me when I was a kid
This is one of my fave vids from your channel,it was such a nice experience to actually see it in play. Thank you!!!
When Thunderball destroyed Gearfried using spell crests, I heard the "monster destroyed" sfx in my head 😂 love the video
Heck yes!
I never played much tabletop YuGiOh but I DID play DungeonDiceMonsters a whole lot on the old GBA game which is an absolute banger; would highly recommend
I remember getting this for Christmas back in the day. Played with just the basic set A TON, and then when I found the boosters in a store, I was disappointed when they only came with 1 more piece
I regret not buying a ton of Yugioh Heroclix when those were cheap so I could homebrew an updated Dungeon Dice Monsters (mostly just with the additional monsters). The plan was to then assign the Heroclix monsters new stats and abilities since most of them weren't in DDD and then also print out a new larger game mat to accomodate those pieces and new dice paths to fit those. Could probably 3D print and paint some mini figures instead now though to do this. Will have to look into it.
I actually have a Japanese Dice Monster, and they do have unfolding dice. I've got three starter sets and a couple booster (plus the Japanese one, as said). It's really fun~!
Now you got me on EBay looking for a set 😂 awesome stuff guys! This game was too expensive for me to get as a kid. Now I may get one as an adult!
I got so hype seeing this video. I always loves the Dungeon Dice Monsters episodes and always enjoyed playing the GBA game. I think you guys could definitely make a habit of this and you'll be filling a very unique roll(get it?) in the yugituber community. Nobody at all is providing DDM content and there's definitely a market for it.
If you don't want to go through the trouble of looking for the different boosters and making your own collection, you could always proxy the cards and 3D print/paint some minis. You could also get a battle mat at a board game store and use that for the game grid since the paper mat is pretty messed up. You could really up the production quality like this.
Also, I don't think I ever saw you guys do this in the video but you're actually allowed to choose a custom set of dice to roll. You don't need to do *all* level 3 dice for example. In the first match, Paul definitely needed movement and attack crests to move into Buster Blader and attack, so rolling 2 lvl 3 dice and a lvl 2 probably would have been the better chance.
There's a Dungeon Dice Monster game for Gameboy Advance. You guys could download an emulator and the roms, farm to build a decent dice pool and duel against each other.
If Dice Mosnter would’ve stayed around, Buster Blader would’ve been a definite Monster staple
Would you like to try out a custom DDM with online play? I am developing one and I have a discord server where we get matches going. Let me know if interested.
Notice how the card artworks are old 3d computer models. I loved that stile, so nostalgic
I like this episode and it’s so cool to see how u created it irl!!!
I got this for christmas when I was little but didn't have anybody to play with but the loose pieces haunted my stuff for years. I still occasionally find a random game piece every once in a while and that was 20 years ago! COMPLETELY forgot they had tactical abacus' until this moment, wow.
Okay, the house rules you introduced were amazing! The ability to regen the monsters made the late game really intense and strategic more than just letting the monsters die and go away forever. Shame that aquiring those missing 137 is a really epensive jounrey, I saw a DM go for 300$ on E-bay, but lemme ask you to consider something really radical: we 3D print a new set of game pieces, the paths and monsters thesmelves, and we have more stable game we don't have spend thousands on only to be disappointed when our order gets crushed by a Thunderball. If you're worried about the cards themselves being hard to represent just use MTG token to write the effects on. Pretty simple and should make for a Dungeon Dice experience like no other.
The only thing is this would take a super fan with a 3D printer so might want to ask people in the Discord and offer some kind of cool reward like getting to 3D print their own self as a Monster Lord or a free membership and mention during the episode? I dunno. Worth a shot right?
That sounds crazy....just crazy enough to work. I wish I had 3D printer.
I own the base set and over the years I have spent a lot of money on getting my hands on the original expansion sets and have bought some of the unopened packs. And playing the game with the full board and having more monsters really open up a lot the thing I have found to change the dynamic of the game are the item cards, but those are pretty hard to find.
Quick, somebody play Sexyback in the background!
Beat me to it.
Unfortunately due to RUclips policies we’ve now had to resort to Tristan making Duke’s theme music.
why would they play that?

Would love to see you guys play this again. You should look into getting proxy cards and figures since the legit ones are so expensive. There are also fanmade monsters that you can print off from TableTop Simulator like the Egyptian Gods. You can print the cards off at home and use a 3d printer for the minis or do what I did and just make 2d carboard standees. The starter set is a good tutorial but the real fun of DDM is drafting from a whole bunch of figures for an intense game.
The "basic theme" for the Gameboy Advance game goes so hard
THE NOSTALGIA! I remember getting this starter set as a kid. I didn't understand how to play it, and I didn't have anyone to play it with, but I remember looking at the models and thinking it was so cool to be holding something that was a 3d representation of the cards. Kind a makes me want to go out and spend a paycheck on getting the sets and maybe a display for them.
Finally a dungeon dice dual! Awesome video 🤙
Having the music from Duelist of the Roses in the background is so fitting as it’s like a go between for DDM and regular Yugioh, it’s really neat when you think about it
You guys definitely need to buy more figures and make more videos. If you really get into it, I suggest you buy a custom game mat. Also, dont be afraid to buy japanese figures. They are sometimes cheaper than English figures and they have more figures that were never released in the US. And don't be afraid to customize the rules to make it more fun.
I love this game and I am so happy you guys are making a video on this. I personally have at least one of every figure and card in my collection. Yes, this includes the Slifer (dont look up the price of the figure and holo card).
A full game of this with more monsters and items and stuff would be such an amazing thing to see, hopefully you guys are able to revisit this again!!
WHOAAAAA!! I always wanted this! That’s so cool!
“Monster lord is YOU!” 😂 brilliant!
Can't waitr until we get that guy as an Illusion vanilla monster in the TCG with that exact card text
Great video and it’s a shame dungeon dice monster stuff wasn’t more popular as it would’ve been interesting to see them make more of these figures and cards as well as more games
This was actually pretty interesting. Soooo, when are you getting another DD pack so we can see an expanded game? Hahaha
I played a TON of the DDM game for GBA. 1/2 star Warrior rush was a very powerful strategy. Loved it.
This, instead of Cross Duel please... 😅
I want to just add that the filming/editing in this was fantastic and was very fun to watch. This actually seems like a pretty fun game once you understand it.
I personally loved this part of the show I wish it had come back eventually 😢
So awesome what a game 2!!! I wish they would bring this back and expand on it you know how dope it would be to have figurines of your favorite monsters and to play with them??? Takes me back to my Hero Clix days but the field would have to be bigger I hope maybe you guys can get more cards and monsters and play again!!!
MAN, I wanted this to catch on SO BAD. I was a big fan of Season 0 when I was a kid,
and I LOVED when Yugi played more than just card games. So seeing ANOTHER game actually come out was so sick to me!!
Wow, this takes me back. I am so stoked to see a revisit, and hopefully with some more of the cards for the nostalgia, plus I would really love to see you two play a "full game" of DDM. This brought me a lot of joy.
Yeah we have to get our hands on everything first though
@@TeamAPS Hey I know you guys can do it! We'll all be right here when you release that video. Thanks for making me feel nostalgia I didn't know I was missing. I am certain you will find what you need.
I would love if you guys made more of these! Since the delta emulator came out, I’ve been playing dungeondice monsters on the gba, I never played the tabletop version so it’s cool to see the differences in translation.
In the gba version, every dice deck has 15 dice, and each monster or item has it’s own dice, which is how they balanced some of the monsters out.
(Ex: kuriboh is a 10/10/10 level 1 monster and his dice is 4 summon crests, 1 attack crest that gives four attack crests, and 1 defense crest that gives two.
baby dragon is a 10/10/10 level 1 monster so his dice has 4 summon crests as well as 1 attack and 1 magic crest, his catch is he has flying. Flying on the plus side means other monsters that don’t have flying or an ability that can target flying, can’t attack it but can defend attacks from it. On the downside, in order to move a monster with flying, you must spend two movement crests for each space moved. People usually summon them as defenders or attackers for both these reasons.
So this example kuriboh has a better dice but baby dragon is the better monster)
When rolling dice you can choose any combination of three dice, (ex: two level 1 dices and one level 4, level 1’s have an easier time to summon and the level 4 has more crests to add to your pool so the third dice won’t be wasted, luck considering)
Once you use a dice to dimension, the dice is removed from the remainder of the game. Out of your 15 dice, you’re only allowed to summon 10 in a single game, so the remaining 5 can be used for crests until the game ends. The game also has a type weakness mechanic that gives a +10 to the attack type that’s stronger and a -10 to the attack that’s weaker depending on the type of monster. The chart is as follows: beast > warrior > dragon > spellcaster > zombie > beast
The color of the dice corresponds with what type of monster is inside it:
Green - Beast
Red - Dragon
Blue - Warrior
Yellow - Zombie
White - Spellcaster
Black - Item
You also can only summon from the monsters that got a summon crest:
Say I rolled a baby dragon, kuriboh, and penguin soldier. All level 1s, my plan is to get the flying baby dragon as my first dice for defense and to have kuriboh for all the attack and defense crests and PS for both the 2 or 3 movement. (I would want to also open the dice into the dungeon path that looks like a ‘S’ to put it right in front of my dice master while blocking one side of the DM so my opponent can’t build up to it on that side) If I rolled kuriboh and penguin on a summon crest and baby dragon was on a magic crest, I could only choose either kuriboh or penguin to summon, having a weak defender and losing their crests to use for future rolls.
Tldr: I would love to see you guys play more of the tabletop version, it’s interesting to see the differences from the gba game
Absolutely loved this game when I was a kid. Also including that house rule of summoning the monsters back was a good idea. Brought out a whole new strategy to the game
I played this a lot growing up. This game was actually really well made. If you have table top simulator there is a map in the workshop with all the released monsters that you can play others with. Super fun
First friend I met after moving back home when I was young had this , still remember laying on the floor setting stuff up and was so excited he also introduced me to the gba game before that thanks for the nostalgia :)
I used to have this game and watching people actually play it as an adult, I can see the potential for an interesting game with the addition of expansion boosters. I kinda wish I still had it. Thunderball is the real secret op unit, not only auto killing but basically having infinite movement in one direction without using progress.
You guys need to do more Dungeon Dice Monster! Even if you have to proxy some stuff cause I won't lie its fun to see YuGiOh history being played!
I actually made a board game base off of Dungeon Dice Monsters
Originally we had a fairly similar design in terms of core mechanics (such as the tiles and dice), but ended up overhauling the mechanics significantly to overcome the original design flaws of the old game.
The base game encourages turtling and no interaction until you can steam roll your opponent in one turn. Every once in a while you may be forced into action due to a monster with an ability, but overall you just spam dimesions in a relatively straight line with the occasional side piece to interfere with your opponent. You then place monsters in the way and wait.
On the GBA game there was a few different viable monsters/ tactics, but one of the most reliable methods i found was spamming 1* stat boosters and then a mix of 2* and an occasional 3* die for the better crest rolls
Man the nostalgia. DDM was my favorite mini arc as a kid and Duke was my favorite character because of his design. I was even lucky enough to obtain the Game Boy advanced game cartridge and I played the hell out of it when I was younger. I loved it so much but never did beat it. If I still have it I’ll need to try and finish it.
Loved this game as a kid! We had a street of duelists and we all played DDM too. Awesome to see you guys play, very fun match! Hope you guys do the sequel
Man, I havent seen anyone play this in forever!! I had this same set growing up. If you guys did another sequel it would be amazing! Keep it up guys love the content.
I loved playing this game with kids from my neighborhood growing up. Like 8 of us got the starter box and a few packs. We'd alternate between this and just standard dueling, usually when we were waiting for new packs to come out.
I haven't thought about this game in YEARS. Thanks for posting this! :)
Honestly a very underrated game with a lot of potential. I wish Konami hadn't abandoned it, but who knows...maybe they'll pick it back up eventually. They are retraining cards people thought they would never revisit. There's a chance.
So cool to see you play this. I remember as a kid a friend of mine bought the starter set and I bought a couple booster packs. Very first one I open is Exodia. I was in shock and my friend hated me for it.
Okay, this actually looked pretty cool. I would love to see it expanded with all the cool things that came on the expansions.
Man, this takes me back. I remember playing the 2-player starter set so much with my friends.
At 45:00 Twin swords moved 3 spaces when it could only move 2 or 4. It says that if you use the double movement effect, it can't do a "regular" movement, which I think means one space. That means that monster would've survived another turn. Could've made the difference.
Honestly this would be dope if they made an updated and accessible digital version of this game. I always wanted to get the starter set of these and the boosters when I was younger, but I could never find them
They have a Tabletop Simulator mod which can be used for online play. Also comes with the stuff from the gba game.
I remember I played this once as a kid since I had a friend who got it, almost forgot about it I think they should bring it back, love the video glad you guys played it
Impressive. Very nice. Let's see Allen Paul'S Capsule Monsters.
Those are sadly a lot harder to get our hands on!
This would be fun to play as a mobile game now where you can click and point where you want your dice to be.
I LOVE Dungeon Dice Monsters. I never got to play the physical game, but the GBA game was awesome. One nice balancing factor that didn't make it into the version of the game in the video is every monster having different crests on its die. So even weaker monsters could be useful as crest generators instead of dimensioning with them.
Man what great memories. Thanks APS. Wish yall had more monsters. Definitely would've been a great duel
Dang Paul!
With rolling like that, you’ve got a future in D&D!
I remember playing this on the gba. It was so bad. Didn’t realize they made a physical version. Thanks for showing it
The Japanese version actually had the minis come with large unfolding dice that you had to build a path from and I was so jealous when I found that out as an adult. Apparently the starter kit only came with dice that unfolded into a cross shape, though, so it was another layer of "collectability" to get dice that unfolded into different path shapes, because each booster came with a monster AND a die that matches its level and type.
This video deserves TONS OF LIKES!!! I was hyped when I found a set up near Virginia Beach about this time last year. EXCITED TO SEE A PHYSICAL SET PLAYED ON RUclips!! AHHHH!!!
Edit: There is a Mod on Tabletop Simulator that has done an EXCELLENT JOB of making this work! I highly recommend it if you want to explore the game a bit deeper ;)
This was awesome. I hope that a sequel does come out eventually. I didn't even know this was an actual product that was made. haha. I used to play this just using the basic YuGiOh cards as a kid
Actually, there were only 61 figures & cards [including the starter pieces (minus the monster lord)] released here in the U.S. Only 2 of the 61 are item figures
I remember buying this back in the day, I wish I knew what i did with them, and its suprising to see someone play this. I'd love to see it brought back. I thought it would be interesting to see more things done with this.
Been looking forward to this video! I went down the DDM rabbit hole a couple years ago and built up a large collection. Super fun game but definitely way too expensive to collect entirely.
I remember hearing about this game and being really excited for it. My dad drove us all over town for me to find a copy, and we finally did at some obscure board game shop.
My friends and I loved playing, but given how hard it was to find, no one else ever bought one and I never got any booster packs. I kinda suspect that it failed due to Konami essentially competing with themselves: as a kid, I only had enough money to either buy yugioh cards or DDM cards, and I was going to pick yugioh every time.
I was obsessed with this game I tried to recreate it at home because I never found this in France. I wish it got more popular. I'd play it even today
Excellent, I still have my copy of that starter pack from back in the day, managed to play it a couple of times before falling back on the classic cards :)
I really hope we get more, i loved this was very cool. Would love to see a more in depth version of the game where all the mechanics are being used!
This was a blast from the past I would never have seen coming, but very fun watch!!
I love playing the GBA version of this game. It violently needs more movement crests at minimum though.
I've been on a Dungeon Dice Monsters kick lately, so this was really fun to see.
