- The recent 2-player Yu-Gi-Oh Starter Set is meant to introduce players to the game with Synchro and Xyz-based decks. But as we recently found out, it doesn't exactly do the best job of it. Now the question we want to answer is: how would it fare against the original Starter Deck Yugi from 2002? The results definitely surprised us!

What do you think of the new 2024 Yu-Gi-Oh Starter Set? I wasn't too impressed, but it's at least a decent product... right?

Conceptually, it is a great idea and step in the right direction.
But for 20 at the current iteration, most definitely not really worth it.
Note that I am a casual who's IRL decks are playground level mishmash developed throughout the years.

How about you guys make a video making a better 2 player starter set for 2024. Show konami how it is done properly. proper theme and card list and all.

I guess these young duelists nowadays have forgotten how to tribute summon. Would've gotten rid of his synchro real nice. Just change of heart + monster reborn then tribute.

i would add that Alec went in a bit too cautious. if he played a bit reckless, the first duel would've been his. he didn't attack a couple of times and also he already had monster reborn the turn he took control of Paul's monster, should've ganged up un him with everything he had
i love how the way Alec announces everything, i tell my friends they gotta play like that too for more dramatic effect!! XD

The Yugi starter definitely put up a fight, and it's so funny how the 2024 decks randomly have some stuff that would be at home in 2002 starters 😂
Because those are easy to use cards.... which will help the player learn the mechanics....
This set is more about learning how to play than to actually be a decent deck....
You start with a scripted trial run duel and then afterwards, you play it.
But it's also designed to be slow so you can take your time and learn the rules....

What this really goes to show is that all you really need to run over these starter decks is a bunch of 1900 ATK normal monsters and some removal.

This idea is genius i could watch a hundred videos of old school starter decks vs modern starter decks. Maybe even do three copies so like at max power with no banlist who is really coming out on top

That 2002 Starter Pack is so nostlagic 😭 I remember buying Spellcaster, Fire-Types, Water Types, Machine Types Starter Deck and being confused on what I would choose because I almost loved it all. But I really pull towards Spellcaster.
you guys should do a starter deck tournament to see which starter deck rules them all
Yugioh really needs to have a format called structure deck/starter deck format. You of course can only use one structure deck. And if there's any banned cards in your structure deck you get to use them. The only thing you have to do is play the updated wording cards

This video randomly popped up into my feed a few days ago. I clicked out of curiosity and now I’m hooked. I love the energy you guys have. I’ve been watching videos ever since, love the content!
It'd be interesting to see a Team APS take on an upgraded starter decks vs the Konami updated versions, though I'd guess you'd need some rules involved so as not to complete overpower the starter with the current meta relevant cards. Sort of a "How we'd do it", kind of thing. Its always interesting to see how others preferences can change a deck without losing the theme of it.

Back in 2002 I opened and played with the Yugi Starter deck at the time.
However, if I had an unopened one today from back then, I would leave it sealed.

I stopped playing Yu-Gi-Oh in 2010 but i seen Paul and the other guys in an act man video and seen how wholesome and welcoming the community is to new players so I've been playing masterduel nonstop and watching the anime all over again. Thank you guys for being so awesome 😎

This was really really fun to watch ^_^ I'm a pretty new fan of Yugioh (started watching the show like. 2 years ago or something lmao but only recently got into the card game through playing Legacy of the Duelist: Evolution (meaning I don't totally understand Synchro and XYZ summoning atm LOL). It was neat to see a duel between an older deck and a newer deck bc I've played a few duels like that myself in the game since I haven't unlocked any newer cards in-game yet. I have managed to hold my own against some of the more amped-up decks with my old-school one, so I was cheering for the Yugi deck here haha :)

Synchro Monsters have white frames, and begin the duel in your Extra Deck. Some monsters, main deck or extra deck, can be Tuners, as indicated next to the monster's type. It'll look like [Warrior/Tuner/Effect] as stated on "Junk Synchron" for example. All other monsters are non-Tuner monsters. To summon a Synchro Monster, you must have monsters face-up on your field with Levels totalling the Synchro Monster's Level, also suiting its summoning condition. For example, "Stardust Dragon" is a Level 8 Synchro Monster that requires 1 Tuner + 1+ non-Tuner monsters. 1+ simply means 1 or more. You could have a Level 3 Tuner, a Level 1 non-Tuner, and a Level 4 non-Tuner, send them to the graveyard as Synchro Materials, and Synchro Summon "Stardust Dragon" from your Extra Deck. The Level total must be exact, and you cannot go over. You cannot use face-down monsters as Synchro Material.
Xyz Monsters (pronounced "ikseez") have black frames, and begin the duel in your Extra Deck. They can be summoned by controlling multiple monsters on your field with the same Level, according to the first line of text on the card. "Kachi Kochi Dragon" requires 2 Level 4 monsters, for example. You overlay the monsters onto one monster zone, and place the Xyz Monster from your Extra Deck on top of them, performing an Xyz Summon. The monsters now underneath that Xyz Monster become Xyz Materials, which are typically used as costs for the Xyz Monster's effects, and go to the graveyard when detached. Xyz Materials are not treated as being on the field, being in a unique state that mostly cannot be interacted with unless a card says it does. Like Link Monsters, Xyz Monsters do not possess a Level, instead having a Rank, so Level-related stuff doesn't apply to them. You cannot use face-down monsters as Xyz Material.

So great video, however there was a misplay in game 1. Trap hole could've been triggered upon coral dragon's summon and gone for game on Alec's next turn. Correct me if I'm incorrect.
Okay, that ending was hilarious. I didn't expect that and was sipping water when Paul summoned Dark Magician. And while I knew the OG deck wouldn't stand a chance against modern decks, I was surprised it did that well.

you know, I used the new starter set with my mom and my uncle and instead of letting them do it on their own i was there and explained everything in more detail than the book because they leave things out intentionally to make it easier to understand but still it lacks a few basic rules and once i was there with them my mom actually understood a synchro summon LOL I never would have imagined XD
It's kind of weird how old cards can't scale to new decks simply on basis of attack alone. Disregarding all the starters, negated, etc. a lot of old decos can't punch over a 2900 monster. Watching Eldlich pave through the game reminded me of a game where I played an edison (2010 era) deck against a new player's structure deck. I could do a lot but couldn't punch over 2+ 3k monsters. Good flashback to old format where attack a defense kind of mattered.
This was around 2012, my one friend(early 20s) got into pokemon cards and was getting all these strong EX cards..spent months building decks. Finally i caved i got a starter deck. It was some Leafeon deck. He couldnt get a single win and kept getting more mad about it lol.

The thing is that you could always make plays with old decks even if they were small while new decks have a bunch of stuff that sometimes with bad luck can't do much for a turn or two

At 3:23 Alec should have monster reborned summon skull, change of hearted the synchro and then it would have been a win potentially (yes I know the trap would of absorbed 1 monsters attack) but at the time he wouldn’t of known that and had a win opportunity
Should've just released the TT decks in the TCG. Well, maybe the Evil Eye and Eldlich ones. The Cyber Dragon structure deck from a few years back still shows up on store shelves today.

The two player deck was a mistake honestly, it's so unbalanced that it can be beaten by starter deck yugi but then it has eldlich and cyber dragon in one of them and then the other one has synchro's...

3:33 move here was to ss dark magician with monster reborn and attack with both, them in main phase 2 tribute coral dragon to summon doma the angel, that would be game next turn
Alec pretty much he should’ve won first math and used monster reborn to get either summon skull out of the graveyard kill creature and had one left he also could’ve used the ability of the Synchron monster to destroy itself when he had it where the other player didn’t get it back
Paused at 35. I’m giving the edge to the two player deck. The OG had stuff like Dark Magician and Monster Reborn but starter decks have improved in quality I think, there’s probably a few less dud monsters in the two player set.

You got really good draws with Yugi Deck on game 1. Usually I would have a hand full of tribute summons and everytime I put a 4star or less it gets destroyed. I know change of heart and soul exchange helps but 1 copy of each is harsh.
