    Very nice explanation of blood typing! Concise, clear, and obviously accurate.
    I almost bought one of these for my manager. She's in her mid-20's and didn't know her blood type. She had tried to donate blood several times, but her hemoglobin had always been too low. Our workplace was sponsoring several blood drives over the next couple months. She made sure to eat lots of iron containing foods for a couple weeks and was able to donate! She was so excited.
    On a related note, I went to donate whole blood at a Red Cross donation center last month. We're doing the questionnaire, get to the question about problems with heart or lungs. I have to answer yes because I have asthma. Usually they say that's fine. This time, they asked when I last had trouble breathing. My answer was that morning. I had used my inhaler in the car on the way there. I was deferred! No one could tell me how long, though. That must be new. I've donated over a gallon and a half of blood and the last time I donated was in February. The intake lady was selling me on donating platelets and telling me all about it. Eventually I said something that clued her in, and she asked me if I am in healthcare. I told her I had just taken my blood bank final. I got this. 😆 I'm donating platelets in July. Never done that before, figured I should try it once, since I'd like to work in blood bank.

      Thanks for watching! I have asthma as well! According to American Red Cross, it is a deferral for having difficulty breathing at the time of donating. But, I couldn’t find a length of deferral either 😂. And, their website says medications do not disqualify from donating. So maybe, you’d be okay to donate within a few days or so. I saw online that a separate blood banking manufacturer say it’s at least seven days deferral for taking oral steroids/inhalers. I’m curious now and I will try to find more information

      @@domilarae It really caught me off guard because I've never been asked a follow up question before and I started donating 15 years ago! I figured it probably had something to do with concern over further diminishing my oxygen carrying ability if they take a bunch of my RBCs. Then they were trying to tell me I should wait until my broken foot is totally healed before I donate blood. It was a bizarre visit.

      Yes, there is a difference in the level of education in the United States. MLT is associates level (2 yr) and MLS is bachelors level (4 yr)

      Electrophoresis has a different testing method, so you wouldn’t be using an eldoncard.

      American Red Cross told me my blood type previously. So I knew beforehand, I just wanted to do the kit for fun. The educational part was for awareness of testing that we do in the laboratory ☺️

      @@domilarae Well thank you. I was convinced to buy 2 of the kits to test my blood type, because I never knew and I was told to donate blood and they would inform me, why two test I wanted to make sure if I did two separate test weeks apart and I got the same results, it worked and I did, great review my best friend and his wife did the same, now we know with confidence about our blood types and me and his wife share the same blood type as well a few more of my friends.

    Hey, I’m a current MLS student in my first semester. I was wondering if you had any tips on how to study for clinical chemistry.

    • @domilarae
      @domilarae  2 года назад

      Good luck as you begin your studies! I used my textbook throughout the class and found that it helped to break down concepts I learned in class. Brush up on any anatomy/physiology! This class teaches a lot of different disease states and how the testing correlates to diagnosing/monitoring these diseases.

    This test doesn't test for weak D, so my blood type comes out A-. But when i donate blood, I'm A+. I guess it all depends on whicb labs will do the typing.

    • @domilarae
      @domilarae  16 дней назад

      Weak D blood types are interesting! And you’re right, it depends on the testing purpose. The A neg typing is just in case you need blood, youd more than likely to be compatible with A neg or O neg units. But, your blood type is still safe to give to other A pos patients 😊

      Antigen D (or Rh) positive! Anti-D would be referring to the antibody, which would be present if the antigen D was negative (not present on the surface of the red blood cell)
