    Everyone should know their blood type. Put it on your phone's lock screen (the one where the time and date shows) along with an 'In Case of Emergency' phone number. It might just save your life and let your loved ones know if something happens to you.

    Nice to know and good if you are in a post apocalyptic situation AND have the equipment for a direct person-to-person transfusion. But as a hospital laboratory professional I can tell you they NEVER take your word for it. If a trauma demands immediate blood transfusion, you will be given only type O blood until they determine your actual type. For repeat visitors that need repeat transfusions for medical reasons, we even verify the blood type EVERY SINGLE TIME you come in before we crossmatch any blood units just to insure that someone didn't confuse the records. Some hospitals will even do a bed side check immediately before transfusion (using much the same slide type test you used) to compare with the type on the blood bag that was crossmatched for you just as a double/triple/quadruple check!

    Its good to know your blood type.
    But in a life and death situation, like a trauma in the ER or hospital, they will still test you to find your blood type before they transfuse any blood. Even if you tell them your blood type just for your safety.

    • @bdogg20101

      Working in the hospital, we had a lady that swore her blood type was A+ but hospital protocol is to test to be sure. And good thing we did.
      She got so upset we tested her to make sure. Come to find out after we tested her, she was B+.
      I explained to her good thing we double checked. Because if we gave her the wrong blood type, that is deadly.

      @keithlester1329 3 года назад

      I would be very glad to have you come to my blood bank! AB donors are in high demand for plasma. It’s a bit too much to explain here, but AB plasma can be given to all blood types (like O negative red cells can be transfused to any one), plus AB patients can only receive AB plasma. It’s true that most hospitals don’t stock AB red cells, but AB plasma can be hard to come by. You are a valuable donor!

      B is usually found in Asians
      A mostly in European, sometimes in middle Eastern people.
      AB is a mix of Asian and European (often through Mongol or Hunnic invasions for example)
      O is found everywhere, Africans and Aboriginal Australians, native Americans have pretty much only O+
      Negative is found mainly in European and to a lesser extent middle Eastern people.

    • @chassoto
      @chassoto 3 года назад

      @@gusjeazer I'm Lipan Apache on my dad's side, so we're very close genetically with Pacifc Rim Asians. I know I have my dad's type.

    • @gusjeazer
      @gusjeazer 3 года назад

      @@chassoto that would explain the B type then! :) But native Americans have almost exclusively O+, although all variation do occur in rare cases.
      Personally I am not quite sure if native Americans really are so closely related to E.Asians for this reason. Maybe the B variation developed later on in Asia? It does seem that O+ was the 'original' blood type, it certainly is the most common one worldwide, found in all people, and many populations are O+ exclusively.

      Allergies are very important.
      Even if you have your blood type tattooed on you or you tell the medical personnel your blood type, in an emergency situation where you need blood, its still protocol to test your blood type first before transfusing blood. Its for your safety.
