AB- is the universal donor for platelets so I switched to platelets. It takes more time. They filter your blood through a machine and put part of it back. Sorry not sure about details. Since it’s more time I am sure some people can’t do it. My iron level dropped so I can’t donate anymore.
When I was a young adult & wanted to know what my blood type was I went with a friend to a blood drive to donate a pint. They sent a donor card with blood type on it with a thank you note. A win-win for both of us. We went on to donate several gallons of blood 🩸 over the years.

Hi, I recently retired from my job as a Laboratory 🥼 Technologist for 40 years. Wanted to reassure you all that if you were ever in need of blood products a blood sample would be drawn from you and cross matched with the blood product. This ensures the blood product is compatible. Even if you know your blood type they would still do a group and screen with a fresh blood sample. Pregnant women are tested for group and Rh when they have prenatal bloods drawn, their babies are grouped at birth. Hope this helps😀
Positive or Negative is the Rh Factor, not the blood type. - "Rhesus (Rh) factor is an inherited protein found on the surface of red blood cells. If your blood has the protein, you're Rh positive"
