That guy who was homeless but still holding a job, getting cleaned up to look presentable for work , getting sober, renting a room to see his family in, spending every cent he had on his kids and letting them be kids and not know his struggles, is a real man. There’s many like him in our culture, that used to be what was expected of from a Father, a Husband, and an overall respectable man. He did the impossible to be a better man for his family. So proud of him and the others.
I have a lot of respect for the man for what he did to combat a horrible situation, and how he put his kids first no matter what. That said, he also made decisions to get him into the place he was, likely hurt people, robbed people, committed violent crimes, and who knows what else. The culture he grew up in, and the decisions he made, are responsible for a lot of pain and suffering. Good on him for pulling himself out, but to claim that the many like him are a positive thing, is perhaps part of the reason these things keep happening. Glorifying this life is going to cause more harm than good, and where I am from, what we call a "respectable man" seems very different. That said, I really do respect how he handled the situation, I just don't think you can take the good without the bad.

I am the UPS driver in the maravilla neighborhood and let me tell you I feel like home . No one has ever threatened me and as a Chicano myself I feel very privileged to serve the area. I absolutely love east Los Angeles!.

I delivered at estrada courts and all those neighborhoods. I was lucky but 3 driver's before me were jumped pistol whipped and robbed.

I tuned in for the first time with "The man who has no legal identity" and have been binge watching ever since. This guy's talent is in bringing no judgments and letting the people tell their story. We live in a world where powerful people find it to their advantage to have us hating each other. These videos are the proof that we do not. Hatred will bear the fruit of hatred. Let's all try to understand. Peace from a 65 year old white guy who spent 27 years incarcerated.

So often I've seen young minority people from privileged positions telling other people to "shut up and listen," before just going into a a diatribe about the person's failures in understanding, and failure to fix things, regardless of the standing of who they're talking to. It reaches nobody.
This is the guy who is actually shutting up and listening, letting people talk for themselves and not interjecting beyond the reasonable questions or misconceptions, and these groups welcome that entirely. I wish alt news like Vice still had these balls.

@@liquidsnake6879 Intelligent in street smarts way, sure. But I doubt they can offer any profound ideas on self reflection and self awareness. Or can come up with intelligent long term and short term goals that create real wealth. I have known people that came from rough areas. They avoided the gang life, avoided drugs, did excellent in school, did NOT tattoo skulls and gang symbols all over their face (essentially disfiguring and eliminating themselves from the job market) and ended up doing quite well for themselves, in a legal way. One of my Mexican friends, put himself through the aerospace engineering Ph.D program at Michigan University, all while learning English...on the fly! Now THAT'S intelligence! Today he travels the world giving lectures to students and other Ph.Ds on new and radical space propulsion systems. This guy took a real risk hanging out with these guys in known and active gang areas. But that's his job, producing risky youtube content, which, im sure pays him handsomely.
He is one of the most gracious host I have ever witnessed. No matter where he is, he is never judgmental, just reporting. May God bless this man and his family.

I’m a 51 yr old southern lady, born and raised in southeast Tennessee. I’ve never been in legal trouble or suffered from addiction issues. That being said, all my respect to these men for surviving in a tough environment, surrounded by their demons every day, but being strong enough to stay clean and trying to be a good example to the younger generations and helping to show them a better way.

The Chicano culture is an integral part of American culture with a fascinating history. Being from the east coast, I love to see and learn from different people. These dudes are excellent ambassadors of their neighborhoods and people. Respect.
I find the US somewhat like the Roman Empire. Having been to the east coast (Boston and Virginia in particular) it’s worlds apart. Be we are all as American as apple pie. We all make up this cool fabric that is America.

Chicano culture is not just East Los Angeles (low riders, gangs or poverty). For instance, Eva Langoria who earned a Master's degree in Chicano Studies refers herself as a Chicana and she is originally from Texas.💫

Which we didn’t wanna be apart of any of the colonizers. So we changed our identities made our own culture and people started indulging it and twisting our culture.
As someone who grew up and still lives in a small town in Scotland, footage like this and from other vloggers is invaluable. Corporate media will NEVER give you the truth... people willing to charge their camera and get in there, honestly to speak to people, you'll hear their genuine side of things. Back then, it was common to lose someone to
drugs, alcohol or gang life. It was very inspiring to hear from the warriors who survived their ordeal and are now thriving!

Im a Mexican American and I grew up in East LA/Boyle Heights. I love my neighborhood and I never forget where I came from. I have nothing but the upmost respect for these 3 men who took responsibility, changed their life around and are educating the younger generation. Very inteligente individuals. They make me proud of my people and my neighborhood. Thank you Peter for going back to my hood and exploring more to show the world this side of LA

Ezekiel was very open about his faith and how it has helped him overcome his struggles with addiction. I would have loved to hear if faith is that important to the other two gentlemen. I'm not religious myself, but I love hearing stories about people turning their lives around. This whole video is actually very inspiring.
I'm sure it is. Latinos are very religious. Most are Catholic.
As a Native American, (Apache), and from San Bernardino, I lived right off of medical center drive, in the projects. I want to take the time to appreciate this mans story. You make me proud of being from Chicano background. And I am proud of you, for finding the good man you always had inside yourself. Mad love to you and yours, OG.

I am a 74-year-old, Hispanic man no gangs, no drugs, and no hardships like these men but I really enjoyed this video. It was very informative and here in the men’s story is nice to let the younger generation know the life‘s got ups and downs for everybody.
I am as guerro as they come. But, I grew up right in the middle of this in Salinas in the 80’s. Americans of Mexican descent are some of the proudest, most respectful people I have ever met. But if you cross them, watch out. What a lot of them lack in stature, they make up for in heart. Got my lip busted a time or 3 by someone who was 3-6 inches shorter than me. That being said, if they have your back, it’s to the bitter end. Great view of their life Peter. These guys are always a video I’ll watch more than once as I tend to learn just a little more each time. And congrats to all of them on their sobriety. Hell of a tough deal to stay sober when blues have gotten so damn cheap. It’s wild out there.

The oldest gentleman hit nail on head....having that strong foundation, working a program of recovery, helping others, spirituality...love this...Peter, I started following you when you were in the Appalachian area. Myself being from West Virginia it was so interesting. Then I followed you through the Navajo, Hopi, Lakota Indian tribes...and now in LA...u truly are a God send...we need unity!!! We need to care and love all people...for without it we cannot truly love God...who created all men/women equal...I love that you are so sincere, that you acknowledge all races....and being an recovering addict myself it's a blessing to hear others share their own experience, strength and hope.
I have so much time on my hands...at 61, I only have 20% use of my heart...I now live in a one room high rise for past two years...hardest thing to do...cuz before I always lived in the country. I raised gardens, canned ...just a simple life...tho addiction was a problem off and on...the longest sobriety was 13 years, then 6, many 1 or 2 year spans... thankful to have 2 yrs now...but it's just so nice to travel with you...I feel like I know you....I love each video...we need more people sharing real life, not to exploit but to embrace that we all have struggles...I pray that God protects u and guides u...keeping it real from north central WV..☮️🙌🙏♥️✌️💯

I just recently found and subscribed to your channel Peter. But I gotta tell you man this was one seriously impressive video. I was so into listening to what these guys had to say. They were all intelligent, well spoken and just really good people. You can tell that they have been through their own personal hells but came out on the other side better people and better men for it. These are the kind of guys that need to be heard by more people. They know what to do to change their own lives and also people around them. I could hang out and listen to their stories all day. These guys with the experience they have need to be the kind of folks who are put into leadership roles. Or at least our leaders should take the wisdom they have to help change this whole country for the better. Just a great, great video for learning how to change and be a better person. Much respect and props to el veterano Ezekiel, Ernie, and Daniel for their achievements and for sharing their stories with real openness, honesty, and wisdom. I used to work in Boyle Heights with senior citizens as a social worker and it's interesting that I kept hearing "Maravilla" in this video, but the only thing I knew about Maravilla was that that was one of the low-cost senior housing facilities where I tried to get my clients housing: "Casa Maravilla."
The gentlemen emphasized the importance of respect, and I understood that in my work with the seniors, 90% of whom were Chicano, Mexican Americans, and some from Central America. Every morning when I passed the seniors in the dining room having their breakfast, I made it a point to greet every one of them with "buenos dias" and a smile, shook hands with the gentlemen, and had brief conversations with all of them in their small social groups. They really enjoyed this and I think we both understood this as a sign of my respect for them as senior citizens, for me being an visit to their ELA neighborhood (although we lived near El Sereno and had many family friends from ELA from my late mother being a beloved teach at Eastman Ave. Elementary School for many years), which was genuine and I aspired to set a positive, upbeat tone for their and my day ahead.
Great segment, Peter, and again thank yous and props to Ezekiel, Ernie, and Daniel, too. 🤜🤛

I had a friend in the military from East LA, he was "un vato loco" lol. What a great guy, funny as hell. We had good times together. People are people man, just treat everyone with respect and more than likely you'll get out alive. 😀
I've been through some stuff, but what they're saying about addiction? 100% real. I have enormous respect for these guys. They're the real deal.
Been watching Peters clips and I have to say when he goes to the Mexican communities I notice that my people are well spoken and have positive things going on. Let’s keep that up and clean up our neighborhoods and raise our children with good values.
These oldschool deeproots Mexican-Americans are the types I grew up around as a white kid. Where I lived, it wasn't gangs and barrios, but orchards and hard labor. I learned as much from them as I did my own parents.
Peter is always the best at what he does. May he continue to inspire more people along the way.

These men have been through it all and came out stronger and wiser and yet they're so humble about it all. They were open and honest about the things they've experienced and I really appreciated that about these men. Their words of wisdom need to reach a lot of today's lost youth seeking out drugs to mask the issues in their lives. I have a clearer understanding of these people's culture and definitely have great respect for them.

Really glad you’re double dipping on the OG LA life, out of all the cultures you’ve visited this one I find super interesting.
Videos like this depicting a few locals with a world or experience/s really draws you in. These are average Joe's but they're the ones with real impactful stories. Thanks for giving them the mic, letting them tell the sad and beautiful reality.
I like this, 3 guys who have done bad things but are not bad people. They have a program of recovery from addiction in their lives and it shows.
These guys are very smart. You can tell all they needed as kids was love and they ended up on drugs because they didn’t have that. I’m glad to hear god has been working in their lives!

Often it’s not about love, but more of a lack of a positive role model like a parent and/or other factors. Could be hanging out with the wrong friends, it could be just being easily impressionable, or maybe just being a bad student and making bad decisions.

He’s helped so many youngsters get out of addiction and the gang life. Everyone loves him for what he’s done. You’ll learn so much from him

I believe for every wrong in these lives there is a story just like Veterano told about his father. So happy he had a good closure with his father. The other two gentlemen have so much to offer because they have walked the walk. These are the people that should be educating others in life’s confusing walks. Living in LA, I love these kinda guys. They’re usually super nice and welcoming unless you do something stupid to cross or disrespect them. Might have a tough guy look, but dont let that place judgement, actually talk to them. They’re usually the most friendly out of anyone, tbh. 35:13
A lot of this East LA Chicano culture has migrated to West Texas. I live in Odessa. My next door neighbor is a Chicano, deep into the culture, head tattoos, lowrider and all. We respect each other a lot, and me being a single guy with no family, he's been very kind to me, inviting me over for parties and celebrations, etc. Genuinely a very good dude, but he's lived "the life" and is someone I'd never mess with. This is a great video, really shows the heart the Chicanos have.

I'm of Sicilian stock. My pops was an old school gangster, always into something to make money, mostly not exactly legal, drugs, gambling, robberies, and so on. He was an ex-convict and was a tough, street guy. He got shot in front of me in our home by a hitman when I was a kid, and then he later went to prison for a while and my grandparents raised me, but my dad was always a good dad to me and my brothers when he could be. He taught me a lot about being a man and getting respect from other men. This Veterano reminds me so much of him. I have nothing but respect for men like this. Yeah, they aren't exacty the examples of pillars of the community, but they're men, real men. They have balls and respect. They have an honor code, and they have wisdom that comes from a hard life and lots of mistakes they have learned from. They should be listened to closely. They'll give you pearls if you listen to them. You can't get that kind of wisdom from a squeaky clean, college educated, suburbanite. This wisdom only comes from a life of hard knocks. Pearls.

Yeah but the whole point in it is to make sure that your sons don't follow you and have opportunity you didn't have. It's not about glamorizing a shittastic lifestyle. There's nothing romantic or nice about it, and the people around you are scumbags. I like what this game said about if good guys win in the end, "not always, sometimes bad guys win, sometimes the good guys win, but the thing is, if you're a goodguy then all your friends are going to be good people that you can count on. And if you're a bad guy then all you're going to have is other bad guys, and you can't count on rogues." That's where it's at. So good lesson or not he put his son in a position to watch him be shot, you no doubt had plenty your own struggles, and the sole point of leading that lifestyle is trying to make you avoid having to learn really harsh lessons that aren't always applicable in other areas of life. Like being completely unable to trust people does NOT translate well into a civilian life. Like at all. It may be vital for the criminal underworld, but lack of trust certainly fucks you hard, harder more often than it ever saves you, with the few times your suspicion saves you from bad things being outweighed by all the opportunities you threw away from lack of ability to trust, because you came to see everybody as a rogue because all the people you grew up around were rogues.
Besides which, you lost out on those suburban dad lessons. Like just dumb shit I've seen guys not even understand about and not even have a good girl who can play mom and housewife because he's not ever been taught that, and I see these dudes doing shit like wearing sneakers and Axe on a date because their dads weren't there or weren't teaching them to wear a nice dinner jacket, suit, cologne, have a stable life plan etc. And so while they WILL get women to fuck them, it's so brutally sad when you realize these girls never saw you seriously as a husband. There's plenty of reasons to keep your kids the hell away from this, and if you can't, at least make them shielded enough they don't know what does dad do until they're already grown men.
You and Pandemic both have good points. In the end, I think it's if you know better, you wil do better. Most people from a complicated background definitely don't want their kids to go through that and get away from that element. It's also some tidbits learned from knowing how to move in a bad environment. Blessings to both of you. ❤

This was very well put together and a great watch. I grew up in East LA and still live in the area. Literally all the places you guys stopped at in the video are places I pass by every day. The obregon park scene was a good move to not stop because people do randomly shoot at that park
Me being of middle eastern descent. I love the american chicano culture. It's warm and inviting & somehow i can relate, maybe because us from middle east are warm & inviting too, close to family, bring shame to the family if we do something bad, respect etc.

My Puerto Rican friends in Philly are protective in the same way when I've been with them for birthday parties or block parties. Two of them saved my life 10 years ago at an after hours club, after being locked in by staff thinking I was police because I said have a good night when leaving. Forever greatful to them both. Family for life.
The one thing I love most about the Latino community is how much they value family. A birthday party would always have at least 30-50 people there. Much love.

Hearing the homie in the blue talk about addiction hit me bc everything he said is so real . one day you’re just trying it out bc your friends are doing it and next thing you know your are cold sweating with no money wanting to die . i’ve been thru hell and back w no shoes on to quit . Also wht he said about a bigger agenda behind new substance is real asf . they want us to be addicted it’s sad . Respect to all 3 they’re cool as hell and enjoyed hearing them talk.

Man, it hit me hard when he was talking about being homeless but spending all his money on making sure his kids were good. I wish more people would realize even addicts are human and capable of being great people, even in the depths of their addiction. I have been clean since September 27th 2017 but even when I was using, I never stole a dime or did anything shady to support my habit. If I didn't have the money to get anything, I sat there and ate the withdrawals. There are addicts out there who don't lose their morals. And even the ones who do can be good people, if given the chance to be.
