When I lived in LA, I had a really scary incident late at night in the parking lot of a bar. This was in the early 2000s. I was being abused and I started to cry and all of a sudden, these chicano gang members just showed up out of nowhere and jumped the person who was abusing me. They held him down so I cold escape, and they beat him pretty hard. Someone called the police, and before the cop cars got there, the gang members had vanished completely into the dark, and the person who was abusing me was laying on the ground bleeding. They were truly looking out for the neighborhood and they were chivalrous. I am not condoning gang activity in any way, but I was really amazed and impressed by their protective and chivalrous behavior. They saved me. I have no idea who they were, I never saw them again. This gentleman has intelligence and wisdom in spite of such a rough upbringing and many challenges. Thank you for sharing your story, Daniel. I love this series of portrait interviews so much.
And that’s why brown men joined forces to start a gang , to protect the neighborhood and everybody in it , sadly it’s quite the opposite now a days .
Word.
💜
I know ppl exactly like Daniel. I grew up with them.
Daniel has stories that cannot be told on youtube. They are stories that have left ruin in their wake.
In my opinion, It is the stronger man that can raise his children and be a solid husband and father and not want ANY recognition from it.
He just does it because it is the right thing to do. He does not need that respect. He has it from his children and wife and thats all that matters. It is real respect, not fear.
Being a macho alpha male is easy compared to being a Man that has built and maintained the trust of a woman who he married and then to raise a family and do it all because it is simply the right thing to do. Not for fame or ego, not for status, not for your neighborhood but for the sake of being good for ALL mankind.
Being such a man isnt glamourous and does not get likes on social media.
It does not sell.
Yes, Daniel has wisdom and intelligence, but it hasnt always been used for positive and I am sure his actions have brought misery to some.
I think Daniels story is a cautionary tale.
But that is what we ( the United States ) sensationalize and promote in our media, hey, it got me to click and watch. I get it.
I have seen this culture destroy good honest people. i have seen the drug dealers at the funerals of the guys they sold drugs to, acting like they actually give a sh*t.
Everybody knows it and acts like its ok. They all watched the addict keep going to the dealer and nobody stopped the addict or god forbid tell the dealer to stop.
They don't see the real poison is the alpha male that is using all of them to get whats good for him and his family. The get mine mentality. Its not gonna play out well.
Anyway, I understand why you and others are enamored with Daniel and his story. But there is a very, very dark side to the whole culture.
@@bilbo5775 thank for sharing your experience. You make a lot of good points. I am not enamored of him but I respect him but I also see your perspective.
Ever since I watched him on Peter Santenello I can’t stop watchin this man’s interviews/podcasts etc. glad to stumble here in SWU to watch him share his wisdom

I've had a fucked up life, and it took me until my 30s to take a step back from all the anger and bullshit and mature and see how it all happened. I love stories like this, so relatable.
Same here. I grew up fucked up and barely starting to live now that I'm in my 30s. I have no idea how I'm still alive. I should have died many times. Life is a blessing bro.

Thaaaaank yooooou! Best comment! 👍
They get held accountable. The streets don't allow people a "bail out"
Almost like money, influence and education don’t make you smart. Shocked
Key to success is responsibility and consistency alot of good people out there that lack them qualitys if it's because of addiction or mental health or there circumstances also alot of addicts are great bullshiters
Exactly and that’s usually the people that actually go through their own struggles and learning from their flawed peers. I love his way of thinking.
Daniel, your broke down stereotypes in your talk, walls crumbled. Deep thinker, and thank you for sharing. Unbelievably, one of the most introspective videos I have ever watched!
“We expect so much from people because of how we where raised”
This hit so close to home
Never judge a book by its cover, this man is a living representation of that! Such wisdom and insight, deep thinker, def reads and researches alot and thinks all the way through! Best thing he said was the fatherly advice about explaining to his kids why or how certain things work and to be detailed. Excellent, and such good advice, I could really relate to that in my childhood! Awesome guy! Awesome work once again Mark!

A close friend of mine, Ernesto, was raised in East LA. He is a fair skinned, red haired Hispanic, so he had some real challenges growing up. He tells stories of running home from school to avoid gang members who thought he was a 'gringo'. I met him in college. We graduated together and joined the Air Force together, going to Undergraduate Pilot Training, UPT, in 1986. We're both airline Captains now, I'm in my 30th year and he's in his 29th year with his airline. Great guy who overcame a lot of adversity growing up in East Los Angeles. Great family values from his parents, who are first generation US immigrants from Mexico.

He's still active in the gang life, so he'd easily steal your purse, wallet, etc and harm you.
I came from a fucked up childhood but the day I got out of the joint I found a woman and was married !! I raised 5 wonderful kids that are all grown and doing great with their families. These 5 blessings is my greatest ACCOMPLISHMENT in life. Today I am proud of who I am with no shame in who I have become but it wasn't easy either I had to work my ass off every single day and still do.
I loved this interview. Who would think a gang member would be so in touch with his feelings and have such wonderful view points in life, love, family, respect, education. He seemed so kind hearted and very intelligent, it made me feel good listening to his story and I believe he is a wonderful father. Ty Mark for this fine interview. And Ty Daniel. Godspeed ❤🎉
What a very eloquent & intelligent man. He acknowledges his past but doesn’t want it to define his future. Kudos to you Daniel x
Definitely didn't expect this and really appreciate both of you spending the time to make this incredibly valuable documentation.

@@aarondavid5866 think about rough diamonds and ask yourself if he is or not.
In most cases, gangs replace family and brotherhood, because they aren't loved by their original families.. In most cases. That's why most of them die behind and for the gang they are in. Just saying ALL gangmembers are not intelligent is wrong... Not an excuse, they could make better decisions sure, but it's not always as black and white as it seems, from the outside looking in.

LOVE IT..."DON'T DISRESPECT ANYONE...THEY CAN BE THE PERSON THAT SAVES YOUR LIFE OR TAKES IT"
Fact.
Straight up.
I remember first seeing Daniel on Peter Santenello‘s channel! And I found that he had many captivating and thought provoking things to say. Daniel is incredibly insightful and so articulate. I also think it’s really interesting that he has made a conscious decision not to raise his children in the lifestyle that he was once involved. Equally as fascinating to me, is how gang culture and the style in which he was raised is so deeply ingrained in his every day behavior. The tenants of our upbringing stay with us forever, good or bad. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from soft white underbelly and from Mark, it’s about listening to all the stories with an open mind, with compassion, and understanding. Thank you so much for exposing me to stories and people that I would never have the opportunity to see or hear. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Thank you, Daniel. Your closing answer hit me and I needed to hear that. I feel that it’ll save me future frustration in my relationship and I can be a better man. The fact that you’re not in prison is mind blowing. Life can be unfair and that’s exactly how your life started. I’m sure your kids are going to be just fine, they have a great man as a father who learns not just from his own, but from other peoples mistakes. My older brother, same age as you, was a Latin king and it’s only because my dad worked too much overtime. My cousin also joined and it’s because his dad was too much involved in his church and not home enough. My dad gave up his overtime when I was around 10 years old and he kept me outside in nature. Long walks through parks, fishing and whenever I showed interests in sports and music, he kept me busy. Just give your kids your time and pay attention to their interests and they’ll be fine. Great job, Daniel. You should be proud of yourself.
Lots of take aways from this interview but I think my favorite was the concept of not just telling kids “No” but teaching them to think. I realize this is not a new concept and seems like common sense but I also feel the fast pace of society these days gives a quick response and move on. We need to teach our children to think for themselves!
Outwitting the devil by napoleon hill explains this takeaway you talk of because most people don’t “think” they accept other peoples thoughts

💜 this comment. When you say "wisdom at 20" I feel you mean encouragement. Our Chicano communities lack in role models, not because our men are not valuable, or our women not nurturing, they are, but the realities of poverty and gentrification, of losing our housing, have always been present for our parents aunts and uncles and they were always working two jobs to make the bills. They were not reading to us, they couldn't afford writing courses, piano lessons. All children have potential but it greatly depends on how big their world is, what they're exposed to, what their parents open them up to and encourage in them. Your comment was lovely, have a great day!

Wow, this interview was so different from what I expected! I saw the tattoos and instantly judged. But, from his first words, his voice and his demeanor, I instantly felt kindness.
Daniel, I can’t begin to tell you how proud I am of you. You have come so far from the generation. I’m so proud of you for the man you have become and the father that you are to your children. Keep being strong! You will go far!
You have to let go of judgment......some of the strongest, loyal, caring, outgoing, trust worthy people look like Daniel and me. Life is not easy for anyone, but for some of us life really was not easy.... this is why I dont judge anyone....you never know what someone has been through. I don't know where you are from or if you've ever been to Los Angeles, but if you have not its not easy here....kids do not value life and will kill you over literally nothing. Young girls are pregnant....im talking about little girls! Ages from 11 and up. The scary thing about humans is that we can adapt to just about anything....that being said seeing a drive by and a 8 year old kids brains blown out becomes normal around here believe it or not. It was not until I left Los Angeles for a few months did I realize how messed up Los Angeles is and how messed up I was to think that how we live in los angeles is normal....its far from it....but the people here are some of the best people you will ever meet and the youth here just need to know they are loved and not just a soldier for the hood. I hope you have a great day.
You know he has probably shot rival gangmembers and if he goes to prison he'll definitely have to fuck up people, right...? That's part of the gangster's life in east LA no matter how smart and well-spoken he is...
Maybe this should be a lesson to you to be mindful of your judgement based on tattoos and ethnicity. Intelligence and a good spirit is not bound by physical appearance or culture
@@jimmygunnz5651 good points, but did you read the tattoos on his face and head...? the name of his gang is right across his forehead... Ted Bundy spoke eloquently and intelligently...
Seriously? Why cause of the tattoos? Hard to believe people are still that ignorant and judge people before even hearing a word they speak. And no I don’t judge people, I’ve been judged for 30+ years so I know how it feels
@@mikebb1000 calm down guy, your getting emotional over someone speaking the truth. Not everyone has the mindset or experiences you do.
@@mikebb1000
Yeah, calm down guy..sheesh.
Wow i dont normally comment but watch but this man is very impressive, I've agreed mostly with the things he has said in terms of morals and respect. He has matured alot. The way he describes love, wow so true
Great interview
Awesome interview! Daniel you speak truth and heart. Thanks for the education!
Very interesting interview! I could listen to him talk all day ! Thank you Mark for one of the best interviews yet! I wish Daniel the best that life has to offer. He would be a great teacher for the young kids that are thinking about going down the wrong path. Daniel you are truly loved, honored, and respected! I want to hug him!!!!
Daniel is an amazing man and father. Life tries to teach all of us, but not everyone learns… it’s not easy at all.
I truly wish him and his babies the best lives. ❤
A teacher!!! We need you , your knowledge, your what your community needs!
Dee let’s not get carried away. He’s a bright, engaging and like able man. And I also wish him the best.
But to say he’s an “ amazing “ man and father - amazing men don’t spend half their lives in prison , or sell and do illegal drugs, or inflict violence on others.
Let’s be clear.
@@michaelcavallacci2945 Maybe you don’t understand the definition of amazing. To her and others,he is amazing. To cite you, “let’s be clear,” amazing doesn’t mean perfect or without mistake. It means impressive or surprising, which he is. Just so we’re clear
@@michaelcavallacci2945 He's never been to prison, You smart "clear" guy
@@shaunadubb2777 You should look up the definition of trash.
He is so clever and insightful and it’s great to hear this man speak. I’m very happy I chose to watch this interview
And thank you mark for making these amazing videos ❤️
This man makes a lot of sense. I wasn't expecting him to be this insightful and modest, great interview.
I have to admit, I was surprised at how well spoken he was. I made assumptions because he’s a gang member. That said, you can’t judge a book by its cover.
A lot of gang members carry them selfs this way . Especially the ones who’ve done time ..
Same...when i saw all the tatts, i thought clown...but hes ok
You judging him says more about you than him.
@@nickbrennan3389 The JUDGMENT you have says more about you than him.
@@cliffkonkle3467 Your hypocrisy is simultaneously appalling and entertaining.
By far my favorite interview. Really felt a connection and a respect towards him.
love your honesty and the love for your kids, love & respect from the uk
This was a great interview. I learned so much. I am his age and grew up in a community with gangs-but I never understood them. I learned so much, and times have changed so much since my high school years. Disrespectful society is our norm now. Anger and hate
By far one of the best ones yet! I'm so glad I heard this man first thing this morning. I will start my day today by wanting to walk a more righteous path god bless you
Wow, that interview was amazing. Especially at the end.
Great interview ! He could help a lot of people and these broken systems.
Best video yet. I know it’s cliche on Mark’s channel, but you can never judge a person just because they look or act a certain or different way to most.
I never comment but I just have to say this is an amazing video. I learned so much listening to this guy. Thanks Mark!
