When I lived in LA, I had a really scary incident late at night in the parking lot of a bar. This was in the early 2000s. I was being abused and I started to cry and all of a sudden, these chicano gang members just showed up out of nowhere and jumped the person who was abusing me. They held him down so I cold escape, and they beat him pretty hard. Someone called the police, and before the cop cars got there, the gang members had vanished completely into the dark, and the person who was abusing me was laying on the ground bleeding. They were truly looking out for the neighborhood and they were chivalrous. I am not condoning gang activity in any way, but I was really amazed and impressed by their protective and chivalrous behavior. They saved me. I have no idea who they were, I never saw them again. This gentleman has intelligence and wisdom in spite of such a rough upbringing and many challenges. Thank you for sharing your story, Daniel. I love this series of portrait interviews so much.

I know ppl exactly like Daniel. I grew up with them.
Daniel has stories that cannot be told on youtube. They are stories that have left ruin in their wake.
In my opinion, It is the stronger man that can raise his children and be a solid husband and father and not want ANY recognition from it.
He just does it because it is the right thing to do. He does not need that respect. He has it from his children and wife and thats all that matters. It is real respect, not fear.
Being a macho alpha male is easy compared to being a Man that has built and maintained the trust of a woman who he married and then to raise a family and do it all because it is simply the right thing to do. Not for fame or ego, not for status, not for your neighborhood but for the sake of being good for ALL mankind.
Being such a man isnt glamourous and does not get likes on social media.
      It does not sell.
Yes, Daniel has wisdom and intelligence, but it hasnt always been used for positive and I am sure his actions have brought misery to some.
I think Daniels story is a cautionary tale.
But that is what we ( the United States ) sensationalize and promote in our media, hey, it got me to click and watch. I get it.
I have seen this culture destroy good honest people. i have seen the drug dealers at the funerals of the guys they sold drugs to, acting like they actually give a sh*t.
Everybody knows it and acts like its ok. They all watched the addict keep going to the dealer and nobody stopped the addict or god forbid tell the dealer to stop.
They don't see the real poison is the alpha male that is using all of them to get whats good for him and his family. The get mine mentality. Its not gonna play out well.
Anyway, I understand why you and others are enamored with Daniel and his story. But there is a very, very dark side to the whole culture.

A close friend of mine, Ernesto, was raised in East LA. He is a fair skinned, red haired Hispanic, so he had some real challenges growing up. He tells stories of running home from school to avoid gang members who thought he was a 'gringo'. I met him in college. We graduated together and joined the Air Force together, going to Undergraduate Pilot Training, UPT, in 1986. We're both airline Captains now, I'm in my 30th year and he's in his 29th year with his airline. Great guy who overcame a lot of adversity growing up in East Los Angeles. Great family values from his parents, who are first generation US immigrants from Mexico.

I also think it’s really interesting that he has made a conscious decision not to raise his children in the lifestyle that he was once involved. Equally as fascinating to me, is how gang culture and the style in which he was raised is so deeply ingrained in his every day behavior. The tenants of our upbringing stay with us forever, good or bad. Excellent, and such good advice, I could really relate to that in my childhood! Awesome guy! Awesome work once again Mark!

Thank you, Daniel. Your closing answer hit me and I needed to hear that. I feel that it’ll save me future frustration in my relationship and I can be a better man. The fact that you’re not in prison is mind blowing. Life can be unfair and that’s exactly how your life started. I’m sure your kids are going to be just fine, they have a great man as a father who learns not just from his own, but from other peoples mistakes. My older brother, same age as you, was a Latin king and it’s only because my dad worked too much overtime. My cousin also joined and it’s because his dad was too much involved in his church and not home enough. My dad gave up his overtime when I was around 10 years old and he kept me outside in nature. Long walks through parks, fishing and whenever I showed interests in sports and music, he kept me busy. Just give your kids your time and pay attention to their interests and they’ll be fine. Great job, Daniel. You should be proud of yourself.

💜 this comment. When you say "wisdom at 20" I feel you mean encouragement. Our Chicano communities lack in role models, not because our men are not valuable, or our women not nurturing, they are, but the realities of poverty and gentrification, of losing our housing, have always been present for our parents aunts and uncles and they were always working two jobs to make the bills. They were not reading to us, they couldn't afford writing courses, piano lessons. All children have potential but it greatly depends on how big their world is, what they're exposed to, what their parents open them up to and encourage in them. You have to let go of judgment......some of the strongest, loyal, caring, outgoing, trust worthy people look like Daniel and me. Life is not easy for anyone, but for some of us life really was not easy.... this is why I dont judge anyone....you never know what someone has been through. I don't know where you are from or if you've ever been to Los Angeles, but if you have not its not easy here....kids do not value life and will kill you over literally nothing. Young girls are pregnant....im talking about little girls! Ages from 11 and up. The scary thing about humans is that we can adapt to just about anything....that being said seeing a drive by and a 8 year old kids brains blown out becomes normal around here believe it or not. It was not until I left Los Angeles for a few months did I realize how messed up Los Angeles is and how messed up I was to think that how we live in los angeles is normal....its far from it....but the people here are some of the best people you will ever meet and the youth here just need to know they are loved and not just a soldier for the hood. I hope you have a great day.

@DVDASA17 If you equate prison time with being hard or tough, you missed the boat there. The overall percentage of gang members that don't ever face incarceration is way higher than those that do, but then there's the question of what you actually consider to be time. Are you counting all three levels or only Fed's? What about tiers, yards, GP vs. PC, etc.? Now as far as tattoos go, just going to jail, or specifically prison, doesn't necessarily mean you earn anything aside from respect on the outside once released. The gang Daniel belongs to is Maravilla, which is tattooed several times on his body. Those tattoos ARE earned, and believe me, if there was any doubt he didn't earn them or he's faking, he'd catch a DP and be forced to take them off with a razor blade, flat out. In fact, his gang still has an open green light on them for refusing to pay taxes and merge with La eMe as Florencia, Avenues and several other did in years past. The simple fact that they stood up to the Mexican Mafia and ran them out of several spots in East LA with a membership of only 800 or so compared to the membership of La eMe, which boasts 20k plus just in and around that area, speaks to the fact that MV is most definitely feared and respected. Now I'm not trying to argue or call you out whatsoever saying all this as I am genuinely trying to provide information and context, while at the same time trying to drop a little knowledge that I hope might help anyone who may not necessarily know any of this. Anyways, take care bud. I hope you have a great weekend and the weather is nice where you're at.

He comes off as intelligent for sure, but I’ve seen other RUclips videos where he’s talking about how he thinks the Earth is flat .. & it’s a conspiracy & all that silliness. So there’s that.

This was a great interview. I learned so much. I am his age and grew up in a community with gangs-but I never understood them. I learned so much, and times have changed so much since my high school years. Disrespectful society is our norm now. Anger and hate

I have to admit, I was surprised at how well spoken he was. I made assumptions because he’s a gang member. That said, you can’t judge a book by its cover.

Him and my best friend share the same birthday. Coincidentally enough, he got jumped into the gang on the day my best friend was born. January 5th, 1992. He passed away while I was at basic training August 13th in 2008. He crashed into a tree headfirst, 16 and no license, all banged up on some KP’s and drinking. 13 years later, he’s still teaching me some important life lessons. RIP Louie Constabile and thanks for the run down memory lane through your story. “Lynn, Lynn, city of sin, you never go out the way you came in.”

Bro... isn't life a trip the way you get taught lessons at very specific points in time in our lives and I think it's exactly that ....when and definitely HOW people that we know and love suddenly pass away Some they stay around as guardian angels watching over the people they themselves loved. I firmly believe that!
