Stage 1 VW MK7 Golf R Is SUPRISINGLY QUICK!

- So I have heard the rumors for years... "It's just an intake and a tune"... In my mind, it can't be that fast. I've never believed it... But holy hell I BELIEVE NOW! Decided to snag an intake and an Accessport for the 2016 Volkswagon Golf R and I was not expecting much. This car is QUICK, as expected the clutch is trying to leave the chat so a clutch will need to be ordered for the golf r to be able to actually push it. I'm genuinely impressed with the Golf. My uncalibrated Butt dyno tells me the car is around 330WHP.

I'm sooo happy to see you got a golf being that was my plan after selling my sti..I will be staying in tuned with what you do to this car buddy! thank you so much
Glad to hear! What Golf are you looking into? 😁
@@Smeedia mk6
Just leave the headlights in auto lol
You’re making significantly more than 330WHP. GTIs and Golf Rs will put close to rated crank power to the wheels. They’re pretty underrated. You’re also at 24 PSI, not 12. Stock it peaks at 17 PSI and the IS38 turbo can go at least 29 PSI
That makes so much more sense, I know that the stock boost gauge on the GTIs read atmosphere + boost so wasn't sure how the AP broke down PSI 🔥
@@Smeedia what’s really weird is if your car has the performance monitor in the car settings on the radio, that boost gauge includes atmospheric pressure making it basically useless 🤣
@@Smeedia From looking at dyno runs, seems like it probably makes close to 350whp. Super impressive coming from the subi world 😂 Now just put a good clutch in that thing and let her rip!
I had a similar experience. I'm used to my turn key WRX and AP. I got a Supra (BMW) and an MHD OBDII tuner. Not familiar with keeping the push to start in accessory mode, it timed out and I about had a nervous breakdown thinking I bricked the ECU when the flash failed. Second attempt was good. Triple push the start stop button for accessory mode, then not a bad idea to buckle the seat belt so the car knows you're still there and doesn't time out. Might be similar on VW... And don't let the key walk away. Lol. Glad it worked out!
Lol totally spaced I had the key in my pocket, started freaking out when it failed to upload 😅😅😅
Just an FYI - The clutch will commit die on high torque/boost maps. Been there done that on my old golf
Lol yeah found that out 😅
@@Smeedia oh noes, good luck 🥲
Oh man, this makes me miss my Golf R! I absolutely love the interior in that car.
The interior is by far one of my favorite things about it 😍
Damnn Tanner! Youre making me want to get a GOLF now! Like for real! Sounds like a perfect 2nd car in general!
It's a blast to drive! Really not too bad to work on so far 🔥😁
Agreed! 🤣 🤣 Damn you Tanner!!! WRX bout to go full track car lol think I found my next daily 😁
Goes for me as well. Might have to sell the Subie to my twin boys when they start driving in a few years. I think I will de-tune it for them though if possible. Lol. Keep up with the great content!
But of course they want me to buy a Tesla. Young kids these days...
Man even before you got the Golf R, I wanted to get one as a second car. Now seeing how much fun you are having with it, I definitely want to get one!!
It's a ton more fun that I was expecting it to be! 😁😁😁
When I first tuned mine (stage 2) it pulled the DSG out of gear when I hit 3rd because it was my first time flashing a car and I hadn't flashed the TCU yet. Ea888 makes crazy torque lol I have an STI now but I plan on getting a MK8 as a daily down the road. Subbed
Super surprised by how much power they make for so little I am kicking myself a bit for not getting a DSG 😅
so cool to see you with a golf. i have an eqt stage1 tune on my gti with dsg as my daily and power is smooth don’t know exact whp but i’m at 29psi. also
been watching ur wrx/sti vids for a while now in preparation for when i get a wrx/sti some day.
29PSI?! These stock turbos are impressive 😅🔥 low key wish I would have got a DSG lol
Let's go Gunther!
Also, last cameo of Karma
Last cameo of Karma 🙏
As a MT Golf R MK7 Owner I can tell you even with a stock tune the clutch will start to slip. As you have a 2016 you are already due. If your DM flywheel is still good, you could just get a updated fiction disc and pressure plate which is cheaper. However if you update the flywheel also with say a single mass flywheel you will likely see an decrease in your rev time as there is less weight for the engine to get your flywheel rotating. The Duel mass flywheel just makes the clutch engagement so much smoother for daily use.
What is a good clutch you recommend? Trying to stay stage 1 with a not too aggressive clutch. Just got my first r and really know nothing about them.
The stock clutch on any GTI is very weak when it comes to racing or going full throttle. On a stage one, you face a 50/50 chance of burning out the clutch. I did a stage one and the clutch melted within 3 weeks! VW engineers should be sued out of existence for supplying such a pathetic clutch. GTI is supposed to be a well-rounded, "driver" car. Well, that isn't true when a simple stage one update completely kills the clutch.
If you want to go to stage one or higher, you must plan on banking a minimum of $2.400 to buy and install a new clutch plate, flywheel, etc. plus labor. By the way, I called several VW service centers near me (in SoCAl) and NONE of them will install a non-VW clutch. You will struggle to find a good shop to do the install. If you leave near San Diego, I can recommend a great shop that is dedicated to GTI.,
Went from Cobb stage1 -> EQT stage 1 it’s a big night and day difference (also their customer service is amazing)
Glad to hear can't wait to jump on it 🔥😁
I use to watch all of your videos back when I had my Subaru and unfortunately when I sold it I started going to other channels because I had bought a fiesta st.. funny thing is now I’m looking into getting a golf R and it happens that you got one too so I will definitely be looking out for all your vids again to get some knowledge about this platform😁🤘🏽
I actually ended up selling my R 😭 engine blew up after 1000 miles. We have a MK7 GTI that I play with here and there though 😅
@@Smeedia I realized that once I saw the newer videos😅 I’ll still be sticking around for all the knowledge you bring about cars in general! Maybe one day you’ll pick up a fiesta ST🤔😁
@@Got_Boost we were looking at a Focus ST the other day 🤫
@@Smeedia ooff!! seeing you guys possibly work on the eco boost platform would be awesome! One thing I know is that they take mods very well!
Did my bro’s 2013 golf R clutch . It was a fun job . Honestly as a mechanic and a Honda lover germans sure do think about future maintenance when designing the engine.
Not as bad as it looks to do? 🔥
@@Smeedia I did it on my drive way on jack stands , For me it wasn’t that bad but definitely super tight clearance removing the front differential. Needed a super long Allen socket to remove the inner bolt . I work on cars for a living so just comparing it to other clutch jobs I’ve done . At my shop with a lift would have been way easier .
I have owned my 2016 Golf R manual since new (12-5-15) and had an APR Stage 1 installed two weeks after taking delivery. Fortunately, the dealer is an authorized APR provider. After a year, the clutch started slipping at higher speeds. I decided to go APR Stage 2, front intercooler, intake, and Southbend Stage 3 Daily (based on the shop's recommendation) and get everything done at once. It's a heavier clutch but easy to get used to and I feel like the clutch will last forever because it's rated for up to 500 HP. At just shy of 400 HP (& 409 FT LBS TQ), the car is somewhere between crazy fast and bonkers. Go for it - it's like having a near-supercar for a bargain price, even with the mods and upgraded clutch.
My GLI came with a low torque APR tune, and no slipping of the clutch. Recently a road hazard damaged my transmission. With insurance it was replaced with a new transmission…and so I took the opportunity to have the clutch upgraded to a South Bend stage 2 daily- 1000 miles later I had the high torque tune put on. It’s silly fun.
SouthBend stage 2 endurance! 100% the best feeling clutch! It’s a bit chattery but 10/10 recommend!
I'll check it out 🔥 think I had it bookmarked 😁
That’s what I had in my LGT. I agree with your assessment; chattery, but great in terms of feel.
It’s good for stock and stage 1. Anything beyond that you’ll need a stage 3 daily or endurance.
JJ- this clutch has survived 80k miles at stage 3
On a mk7 R?
Gotta love 🇩🇪 engineering. You can make great power with just couple bolts on. Clutch job isn’t that bad. I’ll recommend a lift as it make the job much easier. If you are ever in SoCal I will like for you to drive my 335i and get you opinion on what you think of it. It’s a full bolt on with a hybrid turbo.
Totally down 🔥 going to have to try and locate a lift to use for a day to knock out a clutch install 😅🔥
Yay! Smeedia posted today, made my day, at home with Strep Throat, 10x better
Feel better 🙏❤
@@Smeedia I will do my best😁
Strep going around hard, got me and most my coworkers last week
@@Darkhunter218 ya it's bad, I've only gotten worse and now I've contracted pneumonia so🤷♂️
I recommend stage 3 daily south bend every vw owner with knowledge will recommend that. Highly recommend it!
Looks like we're getting a south bend, everyone's suggested it 😅🔥
@@Smeedia I’m running it with 540 whp stock block. Can’t beat it
Talked me into it lol 😅🔥
I have a Stage 2 Southbend Daily in my WRX and it has a great feel, love it. Next upgrade will probably still be a Southbend.
I happened to get a cobb AP, intake, and exhaust for my mk6 GTI when it was first released. AP is the way to go if you plan on modifying the car, you can run OTS tunes and then when its time to go big turbo you can take it in for a dyno tune (or get an E-tune). Also, If you get an obd11 you will open yourself up to the world of VCDS coding and its much more useful as a diagnostics tool than just the AP (just look it up and see what you can do with it on the VAG platform).
Been tuned for at least 70k miles and put 100k on my car since I bought it, general maintenance isn't too bad on them either. You probably will have to get a carbon cleaning done somewhere around 70k miles because direct injection sucks but its something you can totally do DIY.
I have everything needed to do the carbon cleaning so shouldent be too bad there 🔥 is yours a DSG or manual?
I'm curious, did you run an AOS or Catch Can on your DIT? I have a 2021 WRX FA20 DIT motor, and I live where temps get well below 0* in the winter, like -20, -30, even -40+ sometimes, so I've been really hesitant on adding a catch can or AOS but I hear they help on these cars. I was considering just doing valve cleanings every 60k or so instead with walnut blasting. Let me know what you think! I also used to be huge into the Vw/Audi scene. I actually have a 1999 A4, 1999.5 (facelift) S4, and a Mk4 Jetta. I don't drive any of them, they sit in a pole barn un touched for the last like 12 years lol.
@@Smeedia 6spd and the stock clutch is still somehow managing to stay alive at 116k miles lmao. It does slip really bad occasionally in 5th and 6th gear but thats only doing freeway pulls, and most of the time it barely slips. I do plan on a clutch upgrade whenever it decides to die on me!
If and when you upgrade the clutch, get a Fluidampr Harmonic Balancer to go along with it. I say this because an aftermarket clutch will apply an aggressive clamping force from the pressure plate to the clutch disc, to the flywheel and then transmitting the torsional vibration towards the crankshaft of the engine causing crankwalk. Do the Harmonic Balancer and the Clutch upgrade. 🏎😎
I heard crank walk is a very real possibility with these so that's definitely something that we will be snagging 🔥 run a fluidamper on my 17 STI as well 💪
@@Smeedia yep 👍 I would like to see you bring the true potential out of the R. 🔥🔥🔥
Gunther will see 500whp very easily. Southbend stage 2/3 clutch forsure! Also, look into walnut blasting the valves. These direct injected cars love to keep their carbon bottled up
Have a media blaster on order to blast em here 🔥😁
I’m really surprised you didn’t just skip stage 1 and go stage 2. But ya it seems like the clutch is your hurdle so it makes sense. The DSG absolutely lays down the power but you do have to tune them as you tune the ECU, so the grass is always greener. I’ve seen stock DSG push upwards of 800hp.
My stage 2 tune pushes about 25 PSI so it’s likely you’re up there with boost.
They choke the stock power, especially after their whole Diesel-gate, so that’s why they can easily make so much power. They could have rolled out of the factory that way.
Excited to see the downpipe video. Can’t wait to see your reaction to the sound difference.
Low key wish I would have got the DSG 😤 been watching clutch replacment videos with these and it does not look like a good time lol.
😤 but very supirised at how much just that Cobb tune woke the car up 😳
@@Smeedia ya a simple stage 1 from these companies is where a lot of people stop with performance mods. It’s such a bang for your buck. The stage 0 to stage 1 is so much more drastic than 1 to 2. Stage 2 gives you that growl though.
I had an 89 golf. My 2nd car. I loved it.
Fun little cars 🔥💪
@@Smeedia Yes it was. A 5 speed Wolfsburg edition from Memphis Tennessee.
I did a catch can on the Mrs golf mk5 twin charged tsi. Made a big difference. Got about 10mm of liquid in the catch can after 5000km
Need to slap on the R and the GTI 🔥
If you get a catch can I recommend getting the raceline one
I have a golf r manual as well. I’d recommend southbend clutch. I have their stage 3 race clutch, car moves, I still get 27 mpgs too😅
Going to have to check them out, seems to be everyone's go To. Big price tag on that clutch though 😅
I ordered an intake and gonna get a custome tune for my 2013 CC, now i can't wait...
Ohhhh lemme know how you like it! Who's going to do the tune?!
Not even scratching the surface with what these are capable of… but a clutch install is cake on these as well !
It doesn't look too bad to do but at the same time it doesn't look fun 😅😅😅
its very true, they make power ez as hell my bro did a tune an cold air and blew clutch from 320 tq
Wild little cars 😅🔥
I have been watching your videos since buying my 21 STi. Today I have been contemplating about trading in my STi for 22 Golf R. While watching videos of Golf R, this video popped up. I guess it is a sign! Keep up the great work Tanner!
The MK8 are suppose to be some gnarly hatches! If you end up test driving one lemme know how you like it!
@@Smeedia I talked to a salesman at a dealership here in snohomish county, and he said due to chip shortage they cannot give me a date on when they will get some in but he said hopefully in November he can give me a date and get me on the list!
sheeeesh I'm about to sel my wrx tomorrow... lol it sounds so good!
Fun little car to daily 🔥😁
Yes its true unlike the new Subaru's the EcoBoost f150/Golf R's stg 1 ots tunes do increase the power pretty noticeably. As for the Evo's,Gtr's ect..
Im not sure on those🤔... 😎👍🏼 liking the VW content!
Fun to mix it up a little bit, so far not too bad to work on 🔥🤙
Should that (COBB) thing always be connected to the OBD 2 port? can you remove it after flashing the tune?
You can remove it, I like to use them to keep an eye on things 🤙
Hey Tanner I meant to ask you in the video you posted a while ago on karma about installing your injectors in the AMS intake manifold what did you end up doing? Did you just leave the bottom o rings off or find a different solution?
Just pop the lower caps off and send em on 🔥
As far as clutches, stage 3 from x clutches or a stage 3 southbend daily are no the good picks, I’d also pick up a clutch bleeder block from ecs tuning as the stock one is restrictive and has a delay in the release of the clutch for “comfort”smh. Also a stainless clutch from ecs or from new German performance are both good picks.
Dieselgeek sigma 6 short shifter along with a Dieselgeek superpin is a awesome shift kit if you like a direct notchy shift, pairs perfectly with a heavy weight shift knob from raceseng, the one I run is the rondure which is almost a pound, I know it sounds like a lot of weight but I haven’t had any issues on my mk7 gli. Also an APR solid shift bracket completes it
Like I told you before, You had chosen wisely! I always imported my parts from Germany, more expensive, take longer to get here ( probably even longer now), but they know their S%^*! And you get what you paid for.
Dude for real this thing scoots!
@@Smeedia 😈😈😈
The Sachs clutches with dual mass flywheels are great.
If you are planning on going with a bigger turbo or stage 2, take go with a South Bend Stage 3 Daily or Endurance. Feel similar to stock.
Avoid DKM like the plague. Seriously. Unless you like changing clutches every 5-10k miles. And getting crank walk.
Yeah we don't want crank walk, have not heard anything good about DKM 🙅♂️
Will second the South bend Stage 3 Daily! Feels like an OEM+ clutch.
You will wanna read "Relative Manifold Pressure" instead of "Boost Pressure" to get an accurate boost number.
Got it pulled it, much better now 🔥
@@Smeedia You'll shit yourself with the EQT tune vs the COBB one. Nobody runs the COBB in the MK7 community.
Gunther is going to be some rowdy 🔥🔥
Gunther all about the sauce 🔥
Great vid look @ the southbend stage2 clutch. Look at a turbo inlet as well cheap easy mod good power and boost sounds
South bend sounds like it's the way to go 🔥🤌
South Bend Stage 3 daily all the way. If you wanna get fancy add the iAbed rear main seal, fluidampr, and ECS bleeder block/steel braided clutch line
Saw a mention a few times that the rear mains like to leak on these so while I'm in there might as well knock it out
@@Smeedia yep, if you have the thing apart it’s def worth replacing. I would encourage you to the the ECS bleeder block/clutch line too. From the factory the clutch fluid is restricted in a couple places and this completely eliminates that. The feel from that mod plus the SB stage 3 daily is fantastic, really makes the car a pleasure to drive. I would also look into the diesel geek short shift kit.
Damn I am about to buy a 2015+ STI but this mk7 golf R seems so fun!
I think the Golf R would be a better daily car. The interiors look and feel better. And the DSG is quite quick. Plus they obviously make some good power with little mods needed.
Tbh either option is 🔥 I'd say go drive both and see what your feeling 😁
I’m running stage 2 eqt and my gti clutch is still going strong. I would recommend a southbend stage 3 daily clutch.
Sounthbend seems to be the move 🔥
Welcome to the dubclub. My buddy is a subi guy and I’m the vw guy. I got my 16 golf r a few months back and have been very happy with it. Im at a stage 1 high torque. My clutch hasn’t slipped yet but that’s the next thing I am going to do. I couldn’t do dsg anymore my gli is fast and fun but boring
Do the DSGs get old? I drive the ladies GTI every now and then with the DSG and it's fun when I do drive it lol. 😅
@@Smeedia for me it did. They’re fun and shift so fast but the car is driving you so at the end of the day it’s still an automatic.
Get the South bend stage 3 daily clutch. Has held up to stage 2 and 3 power levels on my R.
Wait until you find how well it takes to stage 2 full bolt ons 😁
Also for install how to videos check out Shop DAPs and FCP Euro's install how to videos.
Seems to be everyone's go to for clutches 😅🔥 that price tag is 📈 on those south bends 😳
I just want the power!!!! 😅
@@Smeedia I've been looking at DKM for my GTI
Southbend clutches are the most popular among the gti/golf r alsom side note change the boost pressure gauge to relative manifold pressure for a more accurate psi reading
South bend seems to be the go to, ended up changing it to manifold pressure. The boost function just reads odd with this one
Great video, wanted to ask what does your tattoo mean on the right arm, owl with the eye?
Thank you🙏🔥 and the oil represents knowledge and drive while the eye is always looking ahead.
So I’m looking around for another car and I’m really torn between an STI and a Golf R. I’ve had an STI and i loved it! I’ve also had a GTI and it was a great car overall but FWD is Caca! Is the golf growing on you at all? I feel like I’d be leaning more towards the STI but the golf gets such better gas mileage that would make a difference on my 80 mile round trips. My other vehicle is a gladiator on 37s So I guess even the Subaru would get good mileage compared to that LOL
Tbh I absolutely love thr golf R as a daily driver. Responds to mods well, great gas milage, doesn't stand out too much, super comfy. However; for someone who wants to mod their car and have a more connected driver feeling I'd take the STI. They're both 🔥 in their own ways
Depends what goals you want for the car. Are you going to keep the is38 turbo and just have Bolton's and a EQT tune? Or are you going to go bigger turbo and add port injection? If you're going to stay under 450hp a south bend stage 2 daily is okay, but I'd recommend the endurance because it has the same pedal feel as the daily it just holds more torque. If you're going to go all out I'd look at the dkm twin disk.
I know I mentioned before upgrading to the aluminium s3 subframe, well I mentioned it because you have to drop the stamped steel subframe to swap the clutch also. Since you'll be tearing into it, I'd recommend stuffing up the shifter feel. Either with a coolerwerks shifter or brass shifter bushings and APR cable bracket.
I'd like to not let this car get out if hand like I have my prior 😅 so I'll prob go with the stage 2. As a daily I don't need to push it beyond all belief. While I'm doing the clutch planning on doing a fee other things as well like pil pan, down pipe, some bushings. Etc
@@Smeedia did the dealer tell you it has a replacement or warranted turbo? These is38 do go bad since there's blowby In the turbo inlet it might be worth checking the shaft play and while in there do a turbo muffler delete and upgrade to a GFB dv. Also these engines absolutely need a catch can and aftermarket pcv block
Catch cans on my list, and I don't see anything on. Turbo replacment. Have the full service history
Glof OEM clutch: I can't do it
Subaru OEM clutch: 😂🤣
For real 😤😤😤
Cobb nation. Same set up I have on my ST JBR 3 inch intake tube with factory air box
Cobb makes so parts for so many cars now lol
I just discovered the launch control settings on my Access Port after having it for 2 years.
Tanner: *installs a simple intake* German cars are gonna be so easy to work on!
accessport: im about to end this man's whole career
Lmao 🤣🤣🤣 that thing about gave me a heart attack 😅
That's first time I've seen someone reach for the vacuum line on the airbox, and not have it basically jump into their hand.
Swap out the coil packs for R8 red tops. And 1 step colder on NGK spark plugs. Clutch to go with is ECS. Best bang for buck and daily drive as well. Do not do an “Africa Plate”. Just re route your PCV system to a catch can.
And Africa plate? Now I'm curious 😅
@@Smeedia it’s what they call the PCV Block off plate. But there is no check valve on the Africa Plate. So you are not able to control where and which direction the flow is. Under boost, it channels to intake before turbo. And under non boost, channels to manifold. Each way is bad. So I routed both ends to a catch can, while still using factory PCV system.
@@Smeedia I’d send you a pic of my setup, but won’t allow pic to upload.
Making me miss my tuned and DSG equipped GTI... So easy to make power on the 2.0L TSI engines.
They just want the sauce 🤌🔥
Not sure if I'll be watching any Golf content from here on out because I'll end up hating my WRX and I love my car. lol
Lol don't hate it, they're two entirely diffrent cars. The golf def is not perfect but they're both a blast in their own ways 🔥

@@Smeedia that I don’t know 😓 But Glad you’re enjoying the Golf R!!
I don't even breathe on my AccessPort when flashing it out of fear of bricking the ECU. Was super nervous watching that part.
So which car would you recommend between vw or Subaru for someone that just wants to make more power easily and reliably but doesn’t have either yet
As a daily driver a DSG VW Golf R as a more driver connected weekend car or one for big power the STI. The interior in the VW is so comfy, makes power easy and is relatively thr same price point
Makes for a good video you should do to explain this more in detail lol
This thing will be stage three in a couple months hahaha
I can't keep anything stock 😤😤😤
I’d also look into a United motorsport Haldex tune, I’ve heard good things
Good to know, I've heard of people tuning the haldex as well.
Have you heard much of crank walk on these engines? Saw a handle of posts but nothing concrete. Allegedly the 6mt with a stronger clutch seems to be something that's fairly common inducing crank walk
@@Smeedia it was a thing with the early Mk7s I really haven’t seen or heard about people having the problem on the 17’+ models but if you look up jr14, he had the same issue on his Gti, but I think the r’s are a bit less prone to it as they have stronger internals than a Gti/a3 would have
@@Smeedia yes crank walk is a thing with the golf because from factory they only limit crank movement from one side not the other. But it isn’t as common as people think.
Good to hear, I saw a small sample poll taken and doesn't seem that large. Worse case scenario I don't mind having to build another motor but seems like people were making it a bigger issue than it might have been
You should do a series butt dynoing subscribers cars and see how close you get to the real number haha.
Oh my Gerd, I love this idea!
Not related to the golf but any downpipe you would recommend for an sti?
If ots tune get Cobb, if etune or dyno tune: grimmspeed, invidia
My brother drives an 04 wagon wrx and i have a 2018 GTI and he loves it! He think its pushing more than 300, his is 350. I have an MBRP exhaust, CTS catted downpipe, integrated engineering intake and a cts turbo inlet pipe. I have a video of the exhaust set up if youre interested in the sound. Cant wait to get my tunes tho
Definitely going to have to check it out, they're entirely diffrent cars but I absolutely love my R 🔥
yeah, don't you sleep on German engineering.
Makes me miss my vr6. I did a stage 2 exedy clutch, swiss cheese mod (cut out bottom of intake with an upgrade factory intake K&N) and custom made my exhaust (2.5" diameter) with a glass tube and it was keeping up with hemi's. I just always lost traction in 1st, 2nd & 3rd gear (chirp in 4th). lol
Definitely surprised at how easy it is to make some jam with them 😳🔥
I currently have an 05 WRX, I really wanna send it to the moon with a stage 4 IAG block and the works. But I really need another daily driver, whippin an 08 Ford Focus rn, would you recommend a VW golf as a "stock"-ish daily?
For sure! Definitely a fun little daily and super comfy!
MK7 GTI owner here. Get in touch with EQT and see which Ringer Racing clutch they recommended for what your ultimate goals are for the car. 👍
May shoot them an email today, seems likes everyone is suggesting south bend 🔥
@@Smeedia Mixed opinions with Southbend from what I've read. My only experience with an aftermarket clutch is the RSR from HS Tuning, but that isn't really strong enough for a tuned MK7R.
The coolest part about the Ringer Racing clutches is that they have a heavier flywheel option that essentially eliminates chatter but is still quite a bit lighter than stock. Plenty of different material and pressure plate options depending on street/track/drag use and whether you want to stay with the stock turbo, go hybrid eventually, etc.
I'll check em out, tbh before all the suggestions I was just going to get an ACT but have some more HW to do 🔥
Welcome to euro gang life...... it becomes very addictive

She's got some rumble 💪
Günther 😅🔥
upgraded clutch is the first mod you need to do on these cars
For real 😅😅
I'm apr stage 2 right now in a 2016 golf r and hit 60mph in 3 seconds flat
I gotta get this thing quicker 😅🔥
Cobb parts for a fun pocket rocket! 🚀
🚀 👨🚀
Southbend stage 2 clutches are popular and good
They're so pricey lol was looking into ACT 😅
you sir need to switch to over to an eqt tune! absolutely mind blowing tune
I knowwwww, we need that EQT sauce 😈
@@Smeedia Coming from a “stage 2” VA chassis STi to a stage 2 MK7 GTI that makes more power and 100ft lbs more torque…. I’m a VW fan
You are not alone, Gunther has by far been one of the best and most fun daily drivers I have had 🔥
@@Smeedia the sauce is unmatched on eqt. i ran stage 2 cobb it’s with CAI and high flow catted dp for about a day on my mk7.5 gti and then switched to eqt stage 2 and was behooved by the performance difference
My ninja!!! ❤️
MY DOOOOOODE
2018 golf r owner , 2019 sti owner , if anyone is confused as to which one to buy , get the golf r , southbend stage 3 daily is going in my golf r as we speak, well its in already, picking the car up Monday
The golf R is a much better daily, for a full on project car/track car I'd still take take STI. Lemme know how you like that clutch 🔥
I’m Interested in doing a virtual Dyno on my 2016 WRX. Where can I find a website to do that?
Its a program, you might be able to find it for free online 🔥
Sachs organic clutch I’m running stage 1 APR tune and my R walks past a 2020 Audi rs3. Also look into changing the turbo feed pipe from the inlet pipe. Look on eBay you will know what I mean
I'll take a peek 🔥😁
Bruh the clutch 😂
Clutch trying its hardest to exit the chat 🤣
Is it possible the clutch is just worn out? It shouldn't be slipping with just a small OTS and catback upgrade.
Yes and no but the stock clutches in these are just weak 😤
i have a Mk6 R Stage 2+ but i have a DQ250 DSG and its Holding 550NM ATW on the stock clutch with a APR stage 1 TCU on it...
Sounds like a quick daily 🔥😁
@@Smeedia 0-60 in under 4 seconds XD so quick enough.
So, what clutch ya getting? She sounds really good!
Not sure yet, trying to tip toe lightly on the clutch I guess crank walk becomes a possible issue with stronger clutches on these 😤
@@Smeedia The price of power ;(, I mean a lot of people run em over 400whp, should be a lot of data in terms of what people have done to fix certain issues, hopefully it isn't as costly as an STi lol
does it feel like it handles better than a 2015+ wrx/sti?
Not at all, the STI handles much better 🤙
If you havent addressed this already get a good skid plate or a steel oil pan mk7s have a plastic one
Was going to snag an aluminium one 🔥 figured when I go to do the clutch might as well do a pan and downpipe
Needs a new clutch, time to part out.
🤣🤣🤣
I haven't seen a marriage take this long since Princess Vespa and Prince Valium in Spaceballs
🤣😅
😎👍🏻👍🏻
That clutch 😂😂
Does not want to cooperate with us 😅😅😅
@@Smeedia 😂😂
Literally its that easy to gain power easy with fa20dit subaru as well 😁🤪
The direct injection modern engine unlock so much more potential
But it's not 😅 I've had a handful of FA20 WRXs and they do not pick up power the same way. The DI system is killer with the FAs but the ECU advancements are not same same
And don't get me wrong this is not me knocking on the WRX, however between an Inrake + tune on both cars the R picks up alot quicker.
LMAO, coming from a full bolt on and tuned FA20 WRX, power gains are nowhere near as good as how it is with just a tune on a VW EA888 😂
@@g_p_3431 yea.. i know...zee germans generally overbuilt their engine and detune it for emission,fc and so on...
And with bosch software at their hands.. definately they were hiding more power than japaneese counterpart...
@@Smeedia yup2 totally understood that... Just throwing subie in the mix 😅
Definately VAG car have better tuning options in term of software and engine potential...
Wrx fa20dit literally crippled by subaru from factory with super tiny turbo, and barely adequate injector size (while deleting port injection that were given in brz)
Talking about cost cutting measure 🤭
"Butt dyno feel..." 🤣dead
😅😅😅😅
That's not clutch slipping i was told, my stock 2016 golf r does that as well when boosting, 27000 miles. I was told stock diverter valves will surge the boost at high rpms, but not sure how true that is. Mine gets better with traction control off.
Gunther the Golf R. Oh yeahhhh.
😁😁😁
Wait until you go EQT 2 stage e85 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Need to get some of that E 👀🔥
@@Smeedia yessir!!!
Lets start with this hose right here! ~fails~ Car - 1 Tanner - 0 XD More to come :P
Lol figuring it out slowly 😅🔥
@@Smeedia I understand completely. Hope all the next projects go easily :)
Damn. Do I want a golf?
Do you want a Golf? 👀
With whats happening in the jdm community considering prices i could these slowly start to creep into America
Prices be 📈📈📈📈
Damn that was quick. You sure don't like stock cars😅
Pssssst, stock.... what's that? 😅😅😅
