- While we wait for the 17 STI to come home, I wanna knock some parts out on Gunther the 2016 Volkswagon Golf R! The car is a blast to play with! However; it is way... too...damn...quiet... So we are changing that today with a Nameless Performance Catback for the car. When I was looking I wanted something that was not suuuuuuper loud but not stupid quiet either. 10/10 of the nameless catback!

This is by far the best sounding exhaust for the R. I'm not a fan of pops and bangs, and this sounds so deep and clean. I love it!

As far as the connector you pull the grey tab lock out then push it down and pull to release the connector and the connector on the muffler is because the stock exhaust is valved, and is controlled by the drive mode button
I never noticed a sound difference with it stock 😅 good to know though. And those connectors would not come out lol could have been filled with dirt but I push down and pulled on that thing so hard 😅😅😅

I’ve heard from a few different mechanics that VW’s can be difficult to work on so you’re definitely killing it my dude. If you get even more familiar with them you’ll make a killing in your shop just doing bolt ons for Subies and VW’s, and maybe Mitsubishi Evos down the road;) honestly I bet you could become a really good tuner too with your experience and knowledge.

Nah my mk6 gti was easy to wrench on and it lasted me until 200k miles ..

The Golf doesn't have headers 😳 the turbo bolts to the engine
Nameless has been my jam for exhaust for over a decade. First set went on my 2011 STi, and was my first mod on my 2018 as well. The quality is fantastic and muffler deletes sound so good! Great choice!
Nameless quality is always 🔥 used them on my old BRZ I had a few years ago 😁😁

VW connectors are super easy once you know the trick. Once the lock is released if it has a lock you pinch the connector like most cars but you must push like you plugging it in first. You usually hear a audible click when it releases then it pulls rights off.

The trick to the majority of "euro" connectors lol is to push IN first, undo the small tab, and pull.
Going to try this next time, did not even try pushing in first lol
the tunability on Rs and GTIs are great! Simple flash is all you need and the gains are incredible! EQT for sure!
Eqt is what we doing, only heard good things from them!
@@Smeedia Ed from EQT is pretty knowledgeable when it comes to MQB platform. He actually works on Subarus too. I believe he started with Subarus first if I'm not mistaken.
The plane was in fact louder than the stock exhaust. The Nameless one sounds a ton better. Also, who names their brand Nameless? That's the name of the brand. My head exploded thinking about it. Nah, I kid.
The hangars being bolted to the underside of the floorpan is pretty sick, makes removal a lot easier. And yes, definitely sounds like the baby of an srt-4 and turbo EJ.
It's got such an interesting tone to it 🔥

Did it drone on the highway? I really love the tone of this exhaust for the R but I would hate for it to be annoying when you're sitting at ~75mph. Also, is the cold start really loud? Need to be careful with the neighbors. I'm in the market for an R and already looking at what mods I want to do lol.
Cold starts weren't too loud and don't was minimal, really liked the catback 🔥

Hey tanner ! I asked you in your live stream if I should get a 2021 or 2020 STI . You said to get a 2019 but would a 2018 be better ? I’m planning on buying the iag stage 2.5 short block if the engine ever goes out . Is a 2018 still good ?

Those sensors on the old cat back could be sensors that open and close a valve on the exhaust. On my Beemer you can hear a switch after it warms up and when you put it into sports mode and it opens up the sound more. Maybe that’s what it is 🤷♂️. Been following even though I’ve never owned a Subaru so I’m glad to see you exploring with the German cars! 😁👍

Yup that's it. My 7.5r switched between open and closed valves depending on the driving mode I'm in. Race mode opens them

I think it's got a nice guttural sound in the low power bands and kinda melos when you get to the higher power.

It's perfect loudness. It still will turn heads but it won't get a frowny face and a fist in the air at you.

I can tell you with my Type R I installed the AWE Touring Exhaust with their front pipe and it was tame and sounded really good. Once I put on the PRL Catted downpipe it changed the exhaust drastically. Much Much louder and way more drone.. I would think the Golf would be similar. The Downpipe may make it louder than you want for a DD
Agreed, the downpipe is what really wakes up the car. On a side note how did you like the AWE?
@@Smeedia, That's such a tough question lol. By itself the Exhaust sounded phenomenal, fantastic build quality, perfect fitment, looks great and their customer service is top notch. I can't completely fault AWE for the sound changes after the Downpipe was installed. It did completely change the sound though. And in a good way in some respect . The car sounds incredibly aggressive for a Honda with zero soup can sound but it did make it much much louder and added a significant amount of drone which it didn't have before the Downpipe. I'm on the fence about welding on a 10" resonator. If I was rich there is no question I'd be experimenting with some less aggressive exhausts with the Downpipe but I don't really have $1500 to $2000 to drop a few times until I find the perfect combo. Bottom line is the Downpipe changed the sound drastically. Performance and aggressiveness wise it sounds amazing but it did add serious drone which sometimes I wish wasn't there.
The underside of the Golf R is pretty clean. Did you buy it new, as it isn’t on the VW website….

I’m literally looking at a 17 golf r right now from bend! I live in Medford and have wanted one of these since selling my 18 wrx. I really like the 18s full leds and the digital cockpit/better head unit but you can retrofit the cluster/radio to the 17s.
That digital dash in thr 7.5s are so nice!!!
Btw what do you think of 31k for a one owner with 34,500 miles. On the 19” Pretoria’s, apr stage 1, tint, front lip, lowered.

@@Smeedia I've had the same issues before. Sometimes if you push in with some decent force, then push down all at the same time, it will give you the love you ask for.

German connectors have a 'hook' on the plug, so you have to push the connector together, squeeze the release tab then pull apart. It is meant to keep them from coming apart unintentionally.

Now just wait until you need to buy e-Torx, and triple-square tools for all them special fasteners. I have hundreds of $$ in tools I no longer use, but I'll be damned if I get rid of them.

It does sound so much better now! Those VW connectors are a bit of a pain sometimes. Using a pick has been my go to tool to get them out on my VW too. Gotta love German Engineering! Lol

@@Smeedia for sure. You can have multiple VAG vehicles on it. Pin points faults pretty good. Just replaced 2 fault door lock mechanisms because of it. And you can add functions to the car too for some extra ‘points’

I’m going to go up there tomorrow and see what I can do or worst case I’ll talk to my buddy that’s a whole sale dealer and see what’s up. It’s pretty clean, minimal rust, new axle and factory down pipe from what I saw with like 168k on it I believe and it’s silver with black interior and no sunroof. You want me to keep you in the loop?

Nice video, never heard of nameless, sounds good. You're gonna love the EQT tune, I have EQT stage 2 93 oct, and EQT stage 2 E30 tunes, wakes up the car, had Unitronic before. Next mods, rear sway bar, get rid of the 6.5" screen and put a 8" in there! Subscribed

@@Smeedia Yes! I installed the CCS (GTI Club Sport S) front knuckles gave me -2.1* camber, helps a lot! Or you can get the Eurosport top mount pucks which give -.8* more neg camber, both are silent compared to other top hats.(Superpro/034)

No issue with the valves being unhooked either? Any coding needed? You going to be getting a downpipe as well? Worried about it getting raspy without a resonator , but hoping to hear you do yours first lol.
No coding needed, I just unplugged them and tucked them away. At some point I will but starting to do some more digging into these cars and went down the rabbit hole of potential crank walk issues with the 6mt and a stronger clutch so figuring out what the next move is 😅

Tanner I had a 2016 M2 whose brakes were simply breathtaking. I miss those on my 2019 STI, brakes are weak to say the least. Thinking SS brake lines and better pads.
I drove the 05 sti today with pads, rotors ss brake lines, master cylinder brace etc. And they still just did not feel as good as the Rs do. I don't get it... 😳 there has to be some type of assist on German cars no way they feel that good

Not sure about the golf R but for the GTI the downpipe itself quiets the car a ton. Its common to see GTIs with only a down pipe

you said the FA sounds like ass but you enjoy the sound of the R? or is it like a biased type thing cause the FA doesn’t sound like an EJ?
My issue with FA exhaust is pretty much all of them that I do not like are stright piped and obnoxious.
Fas can sound decent with a resonator and a decent muffler but the ones that get me are the straight piped ones. They drone, they're stupid loud, etc.
I like the Rs sound, has a little gurgle to to it doesn't sound like aluminum pans being dropped from 3 stories up.
My old FA WRXs sounded decent but never loud the tone of em
Downpipes on MQB cars include what you'd think is the mid-pipe. Be aware that if you get a high-flow cat downpipe with the cat in the mid-pipe, they don't really heat up enough to cut down on smells.
Smell doesn't bother me too much, but I don't want suuuuuper loud either 🔥

You probably won’t see see the fault code, only when you try to scan for codes it’ll pop up. You’ll need something like AWEs Electronic Exhaust Valve Simulators (for all Audi/VW cars). There’s no way to use VCDS or any OBD ll device to clear the code - the code always comes back.

You should hear a stock Fiesta ST exhaust! Lmao, the Golf R stock definitely is louder and sounds better, but that nameless sounds pretty nice, good growl to it! I'm running an MBRP cat back and it made a huge difference in my happiness while driving!
I've installed a handful of MBRPs on cars and good exhaust! Are Fiesta STs that quiet?! 😳
