When I first installed the 034 RSB on my '18 R, it felt lively in normal driving but turning into high speed sweepers felt spooky, like the back end wanted to come around - didn't like that at all. Once I installed their upgraded front sway as well, however, the car felt much better. The greatly reduced amount of lean works well with the McPherson suspension to maintain negative camber in turns for more grip, and the car feels safe. My personal recommendation is to do both bars.

Did this on MK7 and fortunately had installed at a shop I use (because their problem to correct), same exact end links as yours. The problem I had was end link mounted to frame, the OEM bolt could not handle the stiffness of bigger sway bar and would rattle and to eliminate had to weld nut to frame to make rigid.

Hey Charles, could you send a link for the hardware? I want to install my new sway bar and assumed it would come with new bolts but alas. Great video as always!
I did the exact same sway bar upgrade with those 034 links. They do make a little noise but that i can accept for the performance enhancement. On my Audi with Bilstein coilovers. The handling is amazing.
I could hear a noise immediately after install but only at very low speed under 3 mph and windows down. I have put at least 40,000 miles on those links and no failure. I have visually checked them a few times and ball bearing looks good.
I'm sure it's too late for the Craftsman giveaway, however, I do enjoy your videos. In fact, the videos are helping me keep my Audi A4 on the road. Thank you!
So what kind of difference is there between the 25 and 26mm? I’m curious why they are sold in 24, 25, and 26mm as those are so close I can’t imagine there being much difference, but I have no idea about such things 😄
I can't say for sure about this particular brand, but some sway bars are hollow and some are solid, so that may be what the big difference is even though the sizes are so close.
Thanks Charles, great video, I will re-watch it again just before installing my Whiteline Rear Swaybar and Whiteline Endlinks to my R in the next few weeks :) Cheers, Don (Perth WA)
Nice to see somebody how's not just making there car a straight pipe and put more power to the engine. The R has plenty of power as is. And suspe spension, breaks upgrades a d chassi upgrade is also fun. I remember when i had a Corolla AE92 GSi and my friend had a G2 GTi 8V his car was a bit faster but i could beat him in small roads because i put on some H&R springs, Bilstein dampers and Toyo CF1 tyres and he put on a Super cheap hight adjustable suspension and Roadstone tyres. His car was to stif to control the small bumbs in the road and his tyres didn't have enough grip to drive it as fast, it maybe could, but you have no feeling of how much you where pushing the tyres. After some time my friend switched to the same tyres and the CF1 is now his favorite Tyre for his cars because it's good value for the money. Now this next step may take a little while, so if you need to take a crap, now's the time to do it. All joking aside these videos are very thorough. Keep up the great work. 😂
Freaking awesome..it is so amazing how much that rear sway improves the turn in & tossabilities ( I know that's not a word, but it fits) When I had a beefier rear sway installed on my MK7 GTI....it was night and day when I hit the whiny roads. Great Video....loving the progression of the car.
Seems so simple with the proper precautions and tools. Would an alignment be necessary or recommended after the install? I have the same seat bar sitting in a box in the garage, saving up for some endlinks.
Really awesome Video Charles, Very helpful and informative...I learnt so much watching it and re-watching it....Keep up the great work...Love each and every video you make
I upgraded my sway bar and went sliding off a turn now I need upgraded tires and to reseal the oil pan 😂 you should express that stiffer suspension puts more reliance on the stickiness of the tires
What is your opinion of running stock links with a smaller, upgraded bar, Charles? I think most probably aren't as diligent about maintenance as you (i.e. cleaning the aftermarket pieces and greasing bushings regularly) - myself included. Instead, I've been beating around the idea of grabbing either a TTRS bar or one of the smaller aftermarket bars available and running stock links and bushings. Curious to know your thoughts!
Hey Charles did this other day, used your video a the tutorial, all went well - test drive I am getting some "clunking" not really sure why all is tight and torqued. Any possible thoughts?
Gat a better alignment with some front toe out (2mm total) and slight rear toe in (.5-1mm total) and it handles even better with fantastic turn in feel.
Swaybar and end-links do not need to have the suspension at ride height/loaded to be torqued down, not sure what your reasoning was for that. Bushings that will flex/move with the suspension ie control arms DO need to be torqued at ride height....but not swaybars/links, the swaybar bushings are fixed to the chassis and do not “move” based on vehicle/suspension movement. And the tightening position for the links will not affect their movement or “resting/ride height” position whether it’s torqued up in the air or at ride height. That’s my only comment, everything else was great love your vids. Great work!
Hi Charles. I just ordered the RSB and End Links. Do you have the part numbers for the one-time use hardware? I’d like to get that ordered as well. Thanks for the great videos!
Sway bar bushings are supposed to allow the sway bar to twist, too so it’s not necessary to load the suspension before torquing the mounts. It’s not like a bonded control arm bushing, which needs to be tightened at ride height to prevent premature cracking due to twist/preload between the inner and outer sleeves. Some sway bar bushings are tighter than others, but they can/will move. Especially with poly bushings that need to be lubed, anyway. It’s also completely unnecessary to torque the end links at ride height, because they use ball, heim or spherical bearings, which are free to rotate.

I had issues with the mounting hardware (bolts and nuts) from 034's end links rusting out almost instantly after 1 snow storm with lots of road salt. Keep an eye on those and consider replacing them with something that handles the winter better.
On the ball joint type fittings. If you can't get a triple square in it or have one that doesn't have a way to put anything in it you can squeeze the joint tight with a pair of channel locks and get the nut off
Just be careful if you push it in the wet - and especially in snow. They can get a little tail-happy when grip levels fall off if you stiffen the rear too much (which is why I love adjustable anti-roll bars.)
@Keith Hache Within limits. If you're short on traction, then flicking the rear around quickly won't be easily salvageable as the front is going to be a bit slippery also. That's why I like adjustable bars (when available, of course) - you can dial the car in a bit better without buying half a dozen new bars to try out. That said, if you still have some grip on the front, then it's certainly the most fun way to resolve that particular problem. It's why I used to daily a classic Mini when I was younger, despite the Lucas electrics and the generally unreliable nature of the car. Great video Charles! One of the big criticisms of say a TTRS (similar would apply to Golf R) compared to something like a Cayman S is its handling and steering response due to front weight bias. kind of weird how you had to raise the passenger's side to get to the top bolt but not the drivers side. thanks for making this video, make it look so easy lol
Always my first suspension mod on the 'Dubs... Just changed out my 034 bar for an APR one couple days ago as the 034 bar is not quite stiff enough even on the stiff setting for my needs (S3 - which seems to need more rear bar than the R))
@HumbleMechanic I have had worsening creak noises since 60,000km on my 2016 Golf R (104,000km now). I drive in all conditions as I live in Atlantic Canada. The noises are heard when going slower and driving over uneven surfaces. My guesses as to the source of my noises: - Stabilizer bar end links front and rear - Stabilizer bar rear bushings - Control Arm bushings Any other ideas or insight? Car is headed to the garage for 105,000km maintenance in a couple weeks and I'm gonna have them fix the noise. Having some idea of the issue may help.
@@PurpleSideBlack I recently heard about this, as a common issue with the Mk7 and S3 8V. It seems to come from the front subframe mounting bolts. 034 makes a kit to fix it. www.ecstuning.com/b-034motorsport-parts/mqb-front-subframe-locking-collar-upgrade-kit/0346010028~034/
Hi Charles - love your videos. You do a great job at explaining everything. I do have two questions though: 1. I'm watching this video because of your "5 best mods for the Golf R" video. So because is THAT video is the upgrade the ENDLINKS or the SWAYBAR? I understand the plastic vs metal concern but which is the actual modification? 2. Having said that - since you're removing the plastic for the metal but according to the video there already is a sway bar SO why are you replacing that as well? Thanks!! Ari
Hi there, great video. I have a question. The reason for compressing the suspension and getting it loaded? Is it to get access to the bolts or is there some other reason as well? And do both side need to be loaded together or can I just do one side at a time?
+1 for RSB upgrade too... .perhaps one of the cheapest suspension mods... I'm looking to upgrade my GTi bar as well.. @humblemechanic do you happen to know the stock size? Btw, happy belated thanksgiving!
Could you please provide some input regarding the wedge shape bushing on the sway bar links? They do not sit properly and cause an annoying "clunking" sound.
Thanks for sharing the knowledge man! I actually went ahead and bought this 25mm by h&r myself... I opted for the "maintenance free" links per your advise. I was curious if you just called up your local vw dealership to get these one time use bolts? Appreciate any suggestions!
Did you get the 034 Motorsports Dynamic+ end links? Did the asymmetrical bushing work properly with the 25mm H&R bar? Working on procuring my own setup for my GTI. Thanks!

What brand and size anti-sway bar is that? I didn't hear you mention it at all. This was super easy on the e-Golf. Also, maybe explain why the final torque's must be done with suspension loaded.
I'm sorry for being negative, but you don't need to load the suspension, it is not mandatory. And etka will tell you the same. Unless your touching or removing other components, you do not need to have it preloaded. So preaload isn't a must. But yeah, did install myself, and huge difference on the stiffest settings. You also don't need new bolts, that depends tho, how old are the "old ones". Just add lockite if you wanna play safe but those bolts aren't those that are mandatory to replace, even VW doesn't replace them in real life. But some bolts do stretch, not those tho.
Thank you. So impressed with all your post. I always check your site for any suggestions or ideas on any VW’s I’ve owned. I installed rear sway bar on my s3 8p too, just wondering is it necessary to install a front sway bar upgrade as well? Do it worth it? Or just rear one is good enough
Is there any way you can make a video on how to turn off the ACC light when you remove your bumper? If i take it to the dealership the car will get TD1
Thank you , Charles. I’m planning on installing Eibach Pro Kit lowering springs onto my Alltrack. I’m thinking while I’m at it install an Eibach rear sway bar and replace the links. Plastic links??? Will the new springs and new sway bar work well together? Perhaps even in daily driving? Thanks. 👊🏼.
Unfortunately the hyperlinks to the end links and sway bar don't work. Anyone have the proper links and the product IDs? I would like to eventually do this. I love this channel by the way :)
I had those same 034 end links installed on my S3 last week. Now that you've had them installed for a few weeks, do you find them to be slightly creaky? Forums seem to be split on whether or not they should be.
it will put more load on the rears, so technically yes, but unless you really flog it in the corners constantly you'd never notice it. The front will get a lot more wear regardless. My answer to that on my S3 was to run the RS3 stagger of 255 up front and 235 in the back (on 9" wide wheels) and move the battery to the front of the trunk.
I love how you show us alternative ways to do things.

Man that means a lot. Thank you
@@HumbleMechanic I'm just a diy driveway mechanic. I know how long it takes me to do things sometimes. I can't imagine the added work of camera set up, talking, explaining, voiceover and editing. The clear and well lit video is super helpful. Your hard work is greatly appreciated, by me and many others I suspect. Looking forward to the Miata stuff down the road.
kind of weird how you had to raise the passenger's side to get to the top bolt but not the drivers side. thanks for making this video, make it look so easy lol
Yeah I thought that too. Weird indeed
Always my first suspension mod on the 'Dubs... Just changed out my 034 bar for an APR one couple days ago as the 034 bar is not quite stiff enough even on the stiff setting for my needs (S3 - which seems to need more rear bar than the R))
how about a video on your car lift? always wondered if those things were safe and the best way to use them
That’s a great idea!!!!!
Has the Golf R been out for long enough that a "Common VW Golf R Problems" video could be made?
I’d say so. Maybe a MK7 Common issues video.
HumbleMechanic That would be great buddy.
@@HumbleMechanic Pretty sure that'll be fried spark plugs once you get a tune? That and Haldex filter sludge haha
@HumbleMechanic
I have had worsening creak noises since 60,000km on my 2016 Golf R (104,000km now). I drive in all conditions as I live in Atlantic Canada.
The noises are heard when going slower and driving over uneven surfaces.
My guesses as to the source of my noises:
- Stabilizer bar end links front and rear
- Stabilizer bar rear bushings
- Control Arm bushings
Any other ideas or insight? Car is headed to the garage for 105,000km maintenance in a couple weeks and I'm gonna have them fix the noise. Having some idea of the issue may help.
@@PurpleSideBlack I recently heard about this, as a common issue with the Mk7 and S3 8V. It seems to come from the front subframe mounting bolts. 034 makes a kit to fix it.

Hi Charles - love your videos. You do a great job at explaining everything. I do have two questions though:
Thanks!!
Ari
He upgraded the sway bar which puts additional pressure on the plastic that’s why you upgrade to the metal otherwise it wouldn’t matter.
Great video! Could you please do a similar one but for the installation of the front swaybar?
I may at some point. Just to see the different
Great stuff as always!
Hey what brand of lift do you have in your garage? Thanks
-Jake
Hi there, great video. I have a question. The reason for compressing the suspension and getting it loaded? Is it to get access to the bolts or is there some other reason as well? And do both side need to be loaded together or can I just do one side at a time?
Came here with this question. Seems 2 yrs later it hasn't been address. Fml😢
Awesome!!!! Bearded wonder strikes again!! Question.. no grease in the brackets??
Lol thank you. No lube needed. The HR bushings are impregnated with lube....😳
HumbleMechanic Hahahah gotcha!!!!
You need your own TV show!
Super easy, barely an inconvenience... lol, I caught that. Yeah, yeah, yeah
Hahaha I love the pitch meetings
"Wow, wow, wow ... wow!"
😂
This will be a big help when I get around to doing this on my S3
+1 for RSB upgrade too... .perhaps one of the cheapest suspension mods... I'm looking to upgrade my GTi bar as well.. @humblemechanic do you happen to know the stock size? Btw, happy belated thanksgiving!
Could you please provide some input regarding the wedge shape bushing on the sway bar links? They do not sit properly and cause an annoying "clunking" sound.
Very thorough! Nice work Charles
Thanks for sharing the knowledge man! I actually went ahead and bought this 25mm by h&r myself... I opted for the "maintenance free" links per your advise. I was curious if you just called up your local vw dealership to get these one time use bolts? Appreciate any suggestions!
Yea I got them from the dealer. Make friends with the top level parts guy there
Did you get the 034 Motorsports Dynamic+ end links? Did the asymmetrical bushing work properly with the 25mm H&R bar? Working on procuring my own setup for my GTI. Thanks!
Cameron Lewis and @humblemechanic Can you guys tell me where you got the “maintenance free” end links? Are you talking about the $130. 034 DYNAMIC+ ADJUSTABLE REAR SWAY BAR END LINK KIT FOR MKVII store.034motorsport.com/034motorsport-dynamic-adjustable-rear-sway-bar-end-link-kit-for-mkvii-vw-gti-gli-r-jetta-and-8s-8v-8v-5-audi-tt-tts-ttrs-a3-s3-rs3.html
What brand and size anti-sway bar is that? I didn't hear you mention it at all. This was super easy on the e-Golf. Also, maybe explain why the final torque's must be done with suspension loaded.
It's an HR bar, I think the size was 25mm, but measured over 25mm. I just love HR stuff. LOL
@@HumbleMechanic Hotchkiss Racing=HR?
H&R Springs. They make some of the best stuff out there
@@HumbleMechanic I wanted H&R but the price point of the Megan Racing one was spot on at 25.6mm iirc.
Try that on a 20 year old golf.
Nice clean bolts/nuts to work with is easy........
Hahah no doubt
Would love to see you fit KW V3 on the Golf R as the next mod.
Been talking to KW about it
Thank you. So impressed with all your post. I always check your site for any suggestions or ideas on any VW’s I’ve owned. Now that i have a 2018 Golf R Mk 7.5, have you explore a rear fig light on a Golf R? Always admire german cars and swedish cars like Volvo with their rear fogs. Pls research and post. Thanks a million!
Bj- Wash dc area.
Thank you so so much 🙏
I see you using the gear wrench brand of tools, how do you like them? How would you compare them to craftsman or some of the other mid range tools?
Consistent. They are good, not great. But at the price I’d for sure be good with them
I love a rear sway bar / roll bar upgrade to!
:)
hi Charles thanks for video very helpful 👌 . do you know the part numbers for bolt and nut that goes through the droplink at the bottom ? thankyou .
Try break clean instead of wd40. You get the lubrications you need for install but no residual slip.
Where is the blue one. I miss it.
Good job. i like work and the new parts.
Still have her. She’s kinda “put away” while we do some goodies on the R.
Would it be an easier install if the suspension was loaded up by just backing the car up on ramps?
Does this upgrade confuse the 4wd system.
Thanks. 👊🏼.
Should be no issues
Right on, Charles. Thank you.
Unfortunately the hyperlinks to the end links and sway bar don't work. Anyone have the proper links and the product IDs? I would like to eventually do this. I love this channel by the way :)
Would it be better to change the front sway bar as well?
I had those same 034 end links installed on my S3 last week. Now that you've had them installed for a few weeks, do you find them to be slightly creaky? Forums seem to be split on whether or not they should be.
Hi. For the End links, do you recommand 034 or another chaper brand like ECS could do the work ? Does the price difference worth it ? Thank you!
Hello
Is it better to do the front sway bar too or it decreases handling in some ways
I am planing to buy front and rear einbach swat my bar
Thank you
Can I do it this way on a mk7 gti? I like how the endlinks were bolted onto the control arms before hooking them up to the sway bar.
You still might have to drop the exhaust, but it should be 99% the same. Probably easier
Your videos are always fantastic!
Thank you
May diff not 100% in middle
Great stuff Charles, Happy Thanksgiving to You and Your Family:):)
You too Pat. Thank you
Wonder if that will help the tires wear more evenly
it will put more load on the rears, so technically yes, but unless you really flog it in the corners constantly you'd never notice it. The front will get a lot more wear regardless. My answer to that on my S3 was to run the RS3 stagger of 255 up front and 235 in the back (on 9" wide wheels) and move the battery to the front of the trunk.
Another excellent video. Thank you!
Can u do a vedio on ur lift And garage.
I love H&R man good pick!
