- Today we are doing a brutally honest review on a 460bhp VW Golf R MK7, I have driven a golf R before but it was standard and an very early model, so lets do a proper in depth review on this modified Golf R MK7 with almost 500bhp (460bhp). I will be going over the pro and cons of this car, biggest ownership complaints, how it drives, what its like to own and much much more!

Listening to that popping and banging has reminded me of why I’m happy to keep mine pretty much stock.
Just don’t get a pop and bang tune. I don’t plan on getting one. It is optional on most tuned.
That exhaust is horrible!
I'm all for a loud exhaust and one of the things i miss with my current car is that it doesn't have any pops on the over run etc.. but this Golf is just obnoxious, there's no way anyone could like it sounding like that.

The ‘numb and lifeless’ thing gets to me…the car is designed to handle and perform very well, while giving the driver the feedback they need to be confident yet not harsh and skittish…and somehow this is a bad thing?
I Own a Stage 2 MK7.5 with Milltek exhaust best money ive ever spent in my life and I totally agree a planted car is a perfect car.
I've got the mk7 and I personally think it sounds great. All I've done is have a res delete. Pops and bangs are just on point 👌
Pops n bangs have to be the most annoying thing atm. I love natural pops and a crackle when you lift off and all that but the maps that just pop for about 5 minutes after you've let off are so dumb 😂
I am a car guy and there is an idiot near me with one. He tends to drive through neighborhoods at midnight or later popping like crazy driving my cat nuts.

Golfs are perfect allrounders but without the stupid pops and bangs. I do agree with you about the golf r having to be driven really hard to have fun that's why i prefer the gti

Good video Lee👍🏼 These do sound shit straight piped proper droney for days, definatly need a resonator fitted or else your ears will eventually fall off! In general they are all round a good car to drive with the right setup and tune. Manual is more fun🤪
Personally like the Golf R sound tbh but the pops are too much on this one lol

I got a stage 1, 15 plate onr myself and love it, soundaktor is off so you don't get fake engine noise through the speakers 🤮I love the car personally

Pop and bang remaps are like the Lexus lights of 15 years ago... Give it a few more years and everyone will realise how stupid they look.

I had my Mk6R remapped and they asked if I wanted the P&B's mapped in, I literally said fuck no even before he finished asking 🤣🤣
If this is brutally honest why claim car is at 3500 rpm at 70mph when it is actually nearer 2600 rpm?
Mine does 2900rpm at 80
I prefer the mk1 golf all day these new golf are just the same as others just tuned up love watching your videos mate

The "sound" issue is the audio limiting / compressing to protect the amplifier. Or it is clipping the amp.
It's probably more £18k to get a decent one but as a whole package they are really quick.
I have recently bought a manual golf r, I actually like it although there are things that can be improved, personally I don't like dsg farts and I don't want loads of overrun when eventually remapped looking for the bangs though when I get flat foot shifting aiming for around 400bhp safely
As good as these cars are all round, personally think they're too refined and not raw enough. Great video as always though!
What’s a more raw car in your opinion?
@@ManUtd57920 personally a raw car is along the lines of a caterham, lotus, stuff that’s not necessarily huge power but something that’s light and has barely any driver assists

Mate you have to be in eco-to turn the exhaust off why don’t they just have a button to shut the Flaps no one unless you’re 12 wants to constantly drive around with Constant pops and bangs what were they thinking looks proper rapid though so still wouldn’t say no🤣🤣😂
I’ve a stage 2 golf R 420bhp, daily driven, such a good all rounder I agree and can be quite boring but trust me if you get out of it and drive a Corsa or something normal and step back into the golf you will realise it was never boring, full tank gets me 430 miles and I average 34mpg which is pretty good for the power, I love my golf I always threaten to sell it for being so boring but I don’t think I can find something that does everything so good in one car
I get 24mpg and 250 miles in a tank on Stage 1 lol

Sounds like the owner hasn't touched the car in vcds yet. There's a load of tuning options for the rear diff to help it feel more like all time awd and rear bias. Also having dcc is pretty nice depending on how you want to be driving the car at the moment. These cars honestly have alot of potential to be track driven and daily driven with minor adjustments

Pretty low power for a stage 3. You should get a test drive over 500bhp. Even my manual Cupra 280 was over that. They are absolutely amazing to drive
As for the music sound quality the owner must have put the bass full which is why it sounds like that. Best to leave the bass at half and if that's not enough get a aftermarket subwoofer

Just watching.. Gotta i like the golf r but in a manual it just seems more fun. Not a fan of the dsg farts and the popcorn. I like the bangs tho but in a manual they just sound better in my opinion

@@ScottZ370 True but if you can afford a 15-30 grand car. The cost of an up rated clutch shouldn't be a deal breaker. People seem to forget the cost of a second hand car doesn't correlate to the maintenance or running costs.
So true I've got a stage 2 manual with a sachs racing clutch M3's & M4's are shocked when a 3 door sleeper golf smokes them 😂

New Golfs are soooo boring, every second car in Germany is an GTI or R Golf, the pops and bangs are too much and it cannot be good for the engine.
I think they're good all round cars , I'm not a fan of them though not really my cup of tea

I was just looking at a Golf R for the first time since the pandemic. I know we all have seen the price of cars go up but I was so surprised to see these go from average 15k to 20k. Utterly ridiculous with the mk8s being utterly shit on the interior pushing them up higher. I never know if I'll be able to get into a boring powerhouse vag soon as they're so expensive. Maybe when the performance egolf comes out in some years and ruins these for performance they'll drop like a stone but for now they're out of reach.
boring powerhouse? ive just purchased one and its the best car ive ever driven tbh, puts a smile on my face everytime i get in it
and i doubt the prices will drop like a stone anytime soon from my experience of recently trying to get the right car, i just had to pay considerably more than someone i know who brought theirs over 3 years ago
Buy a cupra 280 or 290, basically the same car as golf r but fwd and more fun and quicker and lighter

ECO is a pain in the ass ...... Get a valved exhaust !! ..... 5 doors are far better than 3 .... I would love the power ..... BTW they dont sound as shit as you say Lee IMHO
They sound pretty shit. I’ve owned many 4 popper turbos, this is the worst hands down. Subaru, Evo, Mini

No denying the CJXB/CJXC engines sound rather naff. I had a Mk6R with the CDL engine (8P S3, Mk2 Leon Cupra R) and sounded a lot better. Mk7s are good cars but can’t justify owning one due to their popularity

I've got a 7.5 with 529hp. Suspension is standard and kind of scares the hell out of me and doesn't feel engaging. Any ideas what I should do?

Coilovers, rear sway and if you really want to go all out verkline subframe.
Rear sway bar, lowering springs and bushings. Those alone sharpen the chassis up without really hurting comfort
Best coilovers you can afford, rear arb, bushings, dog bone mount upgrade. Haldex controller will make one of the biggest differences to making it feel alive.
Great review again mate. As good as the DSG is, the lack of a manual gearbox option really hurts these cars IMO. I’d rather have less power and more driver engagement.
you can get a manual in a mark 7, they stopped the manual in the 7.5r.

The ossue why everyone thinks they sound bad is because everyone drives the auto. If more youtube vids of the manuals were made they sound great and would have a better rep. No dsg fart sounds. Thats the issue mate. Also most stuff you complain about in the vid can be adjusted and fixed.

If I had the choice, I would pick the GTI to be honest, you look like less of a Hooligan, or boy racer if you know what I mean, drive safe.
Hybrid turbo and only 460 bhp? Im getting close to that on a stock turbo stage 2 7.5R with an e30 mix. Must be a really conservative tune
Stock turbo’s generally go after 1.8 bar. 400-420bhp. A stock is38 cant do anywhere near 460bhp so id like to see your graph with stock turbo and different fuels LOL… also 460bhp is fast and safe in one of these. Im at 489bhp and its rapid and pretty much safe on the stock engine. Anything past 520 your waiting for it to go.

@@TIM612826 yes 6 speed gearbox is good too, but DSG suits the MQB platform well. You're wrong about the dsg gearbox interfering with changes in full manual, it doesn't. And in full manual they will bounce off the limiter.

Ridiculous that any car needs 450+bhp to be a fun car to drive. The speeds these cars achieve are just not needed and it's small wonder that the authorities are looking at banning car modifications. Especially with asbo exhausts like this has where the pops and bangs just piss people off. These have so many electronic aids that the driver skill is taken out of the equation. Old school MK2 Golf, Renault GTT and Pug 205 were way more fun and didn't need a gazillion horsepower to make them exciting to drive. Personally I prefer rear wheel drive though and I'd take my old 535i Sport over one of these but each to their own and it'd be boring if we all liked the same stuff.
