They aren't very fast though so not really much of a sleeper - I mean my Sister has one and it's nice to drive and all and doesn't feel slow, but my turbo falcon leaves it for dead like it was a golf cart, mostly due to RWD - FWD cars are just never that fast off the line on the street. The R is a true sleeper with its 4wd.
I have a 2017, it is as good as the car magazines say. Handles like a go-cart, zero understeer despite FWD, plenty of power for the size, great fuel economy (as long as you drive conservatively) interior quality on par with a lower end luxury car like an Acura, and as practical as a small SUV. My only concern is reliability and cost of repairs, as VW isn’t known to be great in either department.
@@Beer_Dad1975 The Europeans tend to build cars for handling more than straight line performance. More power/torque is pretty much maxed out for FWD in the GTI; 258 ft-lbs of torque from the factory is more than enough to rapidly turn the fronts into smoke if you turn the traction control off.
I love my 2014 VW GLI. Same sedan with EA8888 GTI/R engine just detuned a little further due to age. Unitronic stage 1 tune boosts hp 50 and tq almost 100 for $900 ECU & TCU. New General GMAx tires.Looking to add 034 Motorsport rear sway bar. But at 185k am getting OBDELEVEN info on chain stretch which will cost $1500-$2000. But hoping since 3/4 of this cars engine life is highway miles it’s worth the investment. Also use a P3Cars digital display in vent for $400. Best car I have ever enjoyed and first learned to work on. I enjoy watching your show. And because of Scotty Kilmer I replace my Liqui Moly oil every 5k miles - so last 135k miles since new. The welds on the left front rim are indicative of the impracticality of the low-profile tires. I'm not even sure that they LOOK that good. But, I would want larger profile tires and I always buy a full spare tire and I carry a small hydraulic jack (no donuts or repair kits). Reduces trunk space, but it is SO convenient when you get a flat (when and if).
Agreed. My Golf MK7 came with 16" wheels and a space saver spare, but I swapped it for a full size spare which fits in the wheel well. I've been in the situation where my Father in laws Hyundai (which didn't have a spare) had to be taken to the tyre centre on the back of a recovery truck after a large bolt went through a sidewall. No amount of tyre sealant gunk would have fixed that.

6:37 these wide-base tires are very dangerous when driving on wet roads after a heavy shower. Aquaplaning is guaranteed. The car quickly flips off the road. So please reduce speed when you see water standing on the roadway.
That is a good looking golf. Not overly modified.. good looking wheels and only required mods.. and the colour just makes it look understated.. sounds good too
These EBC redstuff pads are amazing, my rims stay clean for a very long time. Only they get hot real real fast. So if you are a race driver its a problem, even dangerous in some cases. 4 time hard braking from 90 mph to 20 and they are cooking.

The great thing about Nissans is you usually get two trim levels basic and all bells and whistles where as VW charge ridiculous amounts for basic add ons, by the time you've got leather seats, decent stereo with sat nav, alloys and cruise control it's another 5-10 grand!
I had a 2016 in the same color except manual. Such a blast to drive. Lost control doing 120+ and smashed it into a tree backwards. Walked away from it too, might have to get the mk8 R sooner than later
Yes and No. The newer versions of the 2.0L TSI engine are available with a combination of direct- AND port-injection, addressing that problem. Also, carbon deposits aren't a huge issue to begin with. Accessing and cleaning the valves really is a piece of cake.
The Golf VII R has dual injection. So no significant carbon build-up. In normal driving it only uses indirect injection. Direct injection only comes into play when pushing the car really hard.
I had a 2012 Golf R. Had AWD issues within 10k miles. Dealership could never figure it out. Ended up trading for a Matrix. Which sucks because I loved everything about the Golf
Great video, I’m in the market for a rabbit GTI 2019 or a used golf R come summer. Very quick, usable, and FUN car for a guy with kids and limited budget
I have a 2015 VW Golf R with 70,400 miles on it and it just needed 2 front struts and rear wheel bearings. Other that that it's just been standard maintenance. I can't complain as I "drive it like I stole it". Very fun car. One more thing, the backup camera is behind the "VW" emblem on the rear hatch. Shift it into reverse and the emblem pops up like you're opening the hatch and exposes the backup camera.
I used to have a SHO; unfortunately, the Americans either can’t or won’t build a car to last. Mine started falling apart with only 60k on the clock. All the American brands are poorly made from cheap materials in my experience. Ford is probably the least bad of the Big 3 and FCA is definitely the worst, but none of them are good. Their trucks do seem to be better made though. Oh, and SHOs depreciate like a lead balloon. Mine (fully optioned) was over $50k new, I only got $8k as a trade in just six years later. That’s a huge dick punch.
Replacing the plastic water pump on the 2.0 TSI engine is a real pain in the ass as you have to remove the whole intake to get to it. Oh, and no cam cover gasket on this engine as there is no cam cover. . Instead, the cam bridge is adhered with the special VW green colored Anaerobic Flange Sealant (which gets old and then leaks oil down to the water pump swelling the rubber gaskets of the water pump flanges, cracking the plastic water pump, and causing it to leak.)
Yes. Any kind of oil leak that drips down to the water pump swells the rubber gaskets and blows out the plastic flanges causing it to leak. I went with the all aluminum one the last time I replaced the water pump on my CC. Hopefully, that is the last water pump I will have to replace.
@@MrCarGuy You clearly never work on modern cars. Every manufacturer I know of EXCLUSIVELY uses plastic water pumps in their current cars. You'll have to look to the aftermarket to find other options made of metal, because the aftermarket monetizes that fear of plastic. The truth is that the bearing in your water pump will wear out long, long, long before the plastic housing can cause any problems. Metal water pumps are noisier, more susceptible to vibration, more expensive and (if the rotor element is made of metal) even prown to higher rates of failure.
Also, vw messed up on designing the rear C-piller making it wider than the door, creating a nice whistling air noise that gets annoying at 75mph highway cruising. But it is enjoyable trying to predict and counter what the drivetrain is trying to do when I just want power to the rear to do a controlled slide in the snow for practicing figure 8’s. My previous winter car in Cleveland was a 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata for 4yrs but being 6’2”... well, it was cramped and I had to slouch in the seat for winter driving but I loved the wind going through my hair in the summer since my head stuck out above the windshield and I could easily see all around the little go cart unlike the C6 z51 vett. The vw golf R is a great straight line runner and mine ran a 13.2 at the drag strip for a manual, running around 400hp. It out accelerated my vett but still was slower to 60mph becauseI had to go through 2 gears instead of just one gear or sometimes i could hit 60 in 1st gear in the vett... the mx5 had to go through 3 gears to get to 60 but this also made it the most engaging car for fun city driving which annoys sone but it’s what I personally look for
I can't imagine letting this thing loose on an Autobahn with a wheel that has been welded back into shape. It looks like an accident waiting to happen.
Looks like it's even both wheels on left side. Guess he catched a really nice pothole at high speed, probably cracked his front bumper skirt there, also. Anyway, these wheels look very iffy, I couldn't drive a car in good conscience with ones like that.
As a 2019 GTI owner who takes meticulous care of the paint, the chips in the hood indicate this R probably just sees regular driving. For some reason, the paint on this generation of Golf/GTI/R is just _really_ soft. Even with two layers of ceramic coat and regular biweekly washes using only microfibers, I _still_ see tiny paint chips and swirls every once in a while. If you _really_ care about your paint, or have a limited color like great falls green or cornflower blue, I'd highly recommend getting a full-body paint protection film if you can swing the cost.
First thing I noticed... Intake and APR Downpipe. Most Likely tuned and still running Stock Coil Packs and Stock PCV. Owner should upgrade / replace his the coil packs and install an Oil Catch Can if running that EA888 Gen 3 tuned. It will help extend the life of the engine if tuned with Stage 1 or more.
I run an R as a daily driver. They are a great fun car but they can sure drink the fuel. If I am late for work, (and the journey is across some wonderful English rural roads), it can get as low as 16 mpg on that run, (and that's to a UK gallon so 14 US). I think they enrich fuel to cool the intake, but in "normal" use with light throttle low 30's are easily possible. They sound good too, even if some of it is artificially broadcast through the speakers. Overall a great performance vehicle all the better for its "wolf in sheep's clothing" everyday car looks.
Not sure where you got your information but our 2006 Passat had Glasurit paint that was very thick. My 2013 GTI has nary a nick and neither does my wife’s 2015 Sportwagon. All purchased new. Chipped paint on the bonnet is caused by practically driving up other peoples arses on the motorway. Keep some distance and it doesn't happen. So, sign of a bad driver rather than bad paint job.

Loved my Cupra 280. Took it to stage 3 and it's a great car, specially with the manual box and a decent clutch
I have a 14 Jetta SE 1.8 TSi with a tune and I have 260bhp in a 5speed it’s really fun and 40mpg!
The platform really is underrated, my 2016 Golf 1.8 tsi Stage 2 with downpipe and full exhaust makes around 275 hp with the stock turbo and conservative unitronic tune
5 speed manual as well!
Very nice! It really is an underrated platform! On the stock tune, just by putting in 91 or 93 in it it gives you an extra 25ish horsepower! APR did a dyno test on a stock one with 91 in it and it made 167whp! 167X 1.2-=200.4 so it’s making around 200 to the crank with premium gas. Plus it’s been praised as one of the most reliable engines vw has made in years!
I had 2003 GTI that was a absolutely great car until I started having Electronics issues at 87000 miles.. after that I ended up selling it as I just couldn't get rid of the EPC faults.. I sure really miss it though.
Lot has changed.
Mk7s are well into 250k mile ranges already. Many gti guys are running stage 2 with over 100k miles. Mk5 & mk6 are problematics & are turds including the gen1 tsi.
VAG stepped up their game with mk7.
@@markd3891 I got a 2015 GTI with 196k, it’s been ok . The first 180 or 180 or so. Was ok but the last year hasn’t been good . I spent so much Fixing it I feel I got to keep it now and I’m unsure about the new interior in mk8
@@bucknut2000 Yup their gen3 have improved remarkably since the mk6 gen 1&2. No way would they of lasted this long without some timing chain, carbon, leaks occurring. I bet the gen4 in the mk8+ are going to be even more reliable then our gen3. However I do want to mention that the Miller cycle gen3Bs are junk, found in the Passat, Tiguan, A3 fwd & so on
This is my car except that mine is a manual. I love it. It really is quick and planted. I live in the frozen north and take full advantage of the AWD. No complaints really. Must look into tuning it up! Love the channel.
I would so love having a Golf R, but doubt I could stomach German part prices.
Get one, you will not be sorry.
Fair, but it is the cheapest of all german prices. Also there are OE-like parts that are cheaper
I've never had a cheaper car in terms of spare parts than a golf. Because of the sheer mass of produced golfs, there is a giant market of aftermarket part suppliers. Brakes for my golf 3 are 60€ for all wheels together.
Golf R is like a Euro version of a Subaru WRX or Mitsu Evo.
Can't go wrong with a Golf. Infact Golf R is a hot seller here in the middle east.
Just bought a GTI autobahn with the DSG trans last week and I’m absolutely LOVING IT! So glad the wizard approves!
Really dig that car but as a younger lad I dabbled in the VW world and both loved them and despised them. Now my son bought a Dieselgate Golf and I remember why I loved them
I have a 16 Jetta with a 1.4. It’s a great car and pretty quick off the line too.
Jared is one of the best natural mechanics I've ever seen. Also, one of the very best. Knows about Everything, every car, every engine, etc. He's still teaching Tavarish, whether Freddie admits it or not.
Great distraction seeing Tavarish and Jared wrenching away.
I need a video explaining what happened with their truck. 😂
Let me share something. Normally I don’t write comments at all on RUclips channels, I am not a mechanic and I would never be one, I am really bad with tools, I can’t even fix a leaking faucet in my house but I enjoy watching your videos, u are very professional and probably I am not the right judge but your videos are so educational and comes very naturally everytime ur doing something.
Great great Job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ha! I called it. I saw Freddie's dirty hands on Tyler's video and I knew he was working in the Wizard's shop
He mentioned in the vid he was borrowing Wizards shop !...
I had a turbo-S too. 6 spd manual, sunroof, black-n-white leather buckets in gun metal grey and a WHOLE LOT OF FUN to carve through the Lake Mead Recreation area from the North Vegas entrance all the way up to Overton through some of the most beautiful scenery on the planet!
This makes me miss my 2012 GTI. They are such fun cars to drive.
Yeah, I miss mine EXCEPT the bent rims from potholes. I miss my TDI as well- thanks Dieselgate.
Still got my 01 TDI, with a 5-speed manual. 312,000 miles and still going strong.
Had a built 20th anniversary GTI in the imola yellow. Was a very fun car, but I couldn't get over the color. Stuck out way too much. I need to get into another GTI or golf r....

I had a mk 4 gti, very fun car to drive. Had close to 150,000k on it when I traded it in.
I like the 2017 Volkswagen Golf R with the 2 L four-cylinder turbocharged engine. The 2008 model had the 3.2 L V6 engine prior to that. Anyway, I am hoping for the next buy this, not that video the next week or two, for Mitsubishi, Subaru (if the Bug Ninja shows up) or crossovers (if The Car Mom (Kelly Stumpe) is introduced to the Car Wizard, but it will be a month or two later, even three before summer). My father is planning to get a new to him, used vehicle later this year or I may plan to get my first, used vehicle in the years to come. I hope you have a great night and I will see you on the next Car Wizard on Saturday.
My favorite sleeper car is a modern VW GTI
They aren't very fast though so not really much of a sleeper - I mean my Sister has one and it's nice to drive and all and doesn't feel slow, but my turbo falcon leaves it for dead like it was a golf cart, mostly due to RWD - FWD cars are just never that fast off the line on the street. The R is a true sleeper with its 4wd.
@@Beer_Dad1975 you know that vw 4wd :D not really 4wd :D
@@vaklaf700 Oh yeah I know the Haldex system is trash compared to a real system, but it still gets power down much better than FWD.
I had one of these. Great fun. Replaced it with a newer GTI and also fun but the all wheel drive makes a massive difference,
As a MK7R owner, I approve of this message 😁
I love my 2014 VW GLI. Same sedan with EA8888 GTI/R engine just detuned a little further due to age. Unitronic stage 1 tune boosts hp 50 and tq almost 100 for $900 ECU & TCU. Learned all about cars and car systems on this car. Replaced motor mounts and heater core as my first at home mechanic experience. VW pads lasted me 120k last time so got new stock OEM Pagid rotors and ATE pads. Upgraded 034 Motorsport aluminum insert dogbone mount for CVT transmission. Upgraded to Bilstein shocks. I baby my car.
1:52 those are not the injectors car wizard, they are bellow the intake manifold... 3:51 that little bit of seepage is no oil nor transmission fluid is the VAQ the fancy amazing electronic limited slip front differential.
Thanks Car Wizard - great video. I have a 2008 R32 golf with 3.2 motor and 95.000 miles from new..Derek UK
Very nice!
2017 GTI owner here. Everything is easy to get to except the water pump and thermostat housing... the intake comes off. Fun stuff. Otherwise awesome car!!
Thanks for showing us a VW Car Wizard! That was cool!
VW Golf GTi and Golf R been the best hot hatchbacks for 4 decades
I have a 2010 GTI with over 110k and the plastics in the engine are holding up just fine...
For now ...😂 how’s your timing belt it’s holding up for now..?
6:37 these wide-base tires are very dangerous when driving on wet roads after a heavy shower. Aquaplaning is guaranteed. The car quickly flips off the road. So please reduce speed when you see water standing on the roadway.
I’m sure glad the wizard approves of Golf Rs since I own one😁
I have one as well great cars ultimate sleeper
That is a good looking golf. Not overly modified.. good looking wheels and only required mods.. and the colour just makes it look understated.. sounds good too
Woot! Finally, some VW love! 🙌🏼
12:48 , that suits you really well Wizard.
Very nice car that.
These EBC redstuff pads are amazing, my rims stay clean for a very long time. Only they get hot real real fast. So if you are a race driver its a problem, even dangerous in some cases. 4 time hard braking from 90 mph to 20 and they are cooking.
Just traded in for a similar model year Golf R, have dreamed of one for a long time. Went from a Mk 5 Jetta, then got another. then had a B7 Passat and a Mk 5 Rabbit. Then traded that toward a 2013 GLI and then traded that toward a 2018 Golf R. Absolutely awesome cars. \m/
The great thing about Nissans is you usually get two trim levels basic and all bells and whistles where as VW charge ridiculous amounts for basic add ons, by the time you've got leather seats, decent stereo with sat nav, alloys and cruise control it's another 5-10 grand!
That's VAG for ya. 😅 But atleast you can choose the _exact_ spec you want with the options.

What is the top speed on these? Both electronically limited and unblocked?
Got a 17 Gti sport these vw’s are definitely great cars.
Same. Mine is an is38 car. Love my lil sleeper
Thanks for showing us the VW! I love my 2014 Eos, which is a blast to drive.
Carbon will build up on the intake valves, it later needs to be taken apart and clean
No shit.. tell is something we dont know
@@xNewNickx North America didn’t get mpi like the Europeans but then again we also didn’t get hit by the price lol

I use to have a white TDI and it was a blast to drive. I got as high as 72 MPG.
Why did you get rid of it?
One of the best cars for the money! VWs are hard to beat in this price category. Their association with Porsche brings unexpected results sometimes.
Great video, I’m in the market for a rabbit GTI 2019 or a used golf R come summer. Very quick, usable, and FUN car for a guy with kids and limited budget

We have seen the video of Wizard standing next to an Econoline. From that I conclude The Wizard is not short. Therefore, Jared is the sasquatch.
Need to throw the Car Ninja 🥷 is for a size comparison...
I miss 15 and 16 inch wheels. I miss sidewall even more.
The Golf is sweet, when are you going to start on the Chevelle ??
I have a 2015 VW Golf R with 70,400 miles on it and it just needed 2 front struts and rear wheel bearings. Other that that it's just been standard maintenance. I can't complain as I "drive it like I stole it". Very fun car. One more thing, the backup camera is behind the "VW" emblem on the rear hatch. Shift it into reverse and the emblem pops up like you're opening the hatch and exposes the backup camera.
Favorite sleeper: Mercury Marauder or Taurus SHO
I used to have a SHO; unfortunately, the Americans either can’t or won’t build a car to last. Mine started falling apart with only 60k on the clock. All the American brands are poorly made from cheap materials in my experience. Ford is probably the least bad of the Big 3 and FCA is definitely the worst, but none of them are good. Their trucks do seem to be better made though.
Oh, and SHOs depreciate like a lead balloon. Mine (fully optioned) was over $50k new, I only got $8k as a trade in just six years later. That’s a huge dick punch.
Marauder - Cleetus style!
Buick GN.
Nowadays that AWD twin turbo Taurus would embarrass a Marauder performance wise, but that still doesn't mean I would rather have it
SHO
That little hatch is tastefully modified, nicely done not too much not too little. Thats how I would want mine
The plastic water pumps are an inexcusable decision by VW.
That's why you replace and clean with upgraded parts..
Injectors are under the intake manifold, those are cam sliders for variable valve lift.
I do enjoy the Car Wizard.
Just s quick thought, the intro video sequence is genius! Great timing with the music and the diversity of the channel.
Laughs in 'for racing' use 😂😂
All that money for mods but then a welded rim. Here in Germany that is an absolute no-no!
Looks like it's even both wheels on left side. Guess he catched a really nice pothole at high speed, probably cracked his front bumper skirt there, also. Anyway, these wheels look very iffy, I couldn't drive a car in good conscience with ones like that.
One of the downsides of low profile rims. I switched from 19 to 18 wheels after hitting a pothole and busting a sidewall. Luckily no rim damage.
Did they move the Autobahn to Kansas? Cool.

Surely that welding on the alloy puts the wheel way out of balance needing a lot of counterweight. Is that legal in USA?
We don't worry about legality in the US
Everything is legal here
That is aluminum, so no that wouldn't be too much of a counter weight. They use lead as counter weight.
PLEASE MAKE A TEST DRIVE VIDEO NEXT!
To this welded rim. In germany we say to this Schrott and i think its beautiful

That could be a good thumbnail.
I have 2016 VW Jetta Sport with the 1.8 TSI engine with a stage 1 APR tune. The color is same as the Golf R, love that color.
15:00 VWs and golfs in particular are known for their shitty thin paint. So it's no surprise the hood looks heavily chipped here.
Not sure where you got your information but our 2006 Passat had Glasurit paint that was very thick. My 2013 GTI has nary a nick and neither does my wife’s 2015 Sportwagon. All purchased new. My Japanese car’s paint on the other hand looked sandblasted after a year old. I always said I wished my Honda’s and Mitsubishi had VW paint.
@@stuffhappens5681 well, mileage and specific color may play a role here, assembly region too. I live in russia, and vws and skodas have pretty bad rep when it comes to painting here. I've personally been turned off buying mk7 golf because it had sizable chunks of it's paint missing on the hood. And it's mileage wasn't even that high.
Chipped paint on the bonnet is caused by practically driving up other peoples arses on the motorway. Keep some distance and it doesn't happen. So, sign of a bad driver rather than bad paint job.
@@Psych0technic - Not sure what to think because my black pearl Mk6 GTI purchased new has over 50,000 miles and looks great. Daily driver. Highway driven in all weather. The GTI' s although not as fast as the R's are also supposed to be a great drive.
That wheel welding is just low level. That wheel should have been replaced.
