It is a fair review, you are right aswel, it would be a good lap time car handles well switches gear instant , perfect all rounder for everything, but it losses out on the driving experience in terms of feeling fully involved with the road.. I agree

You did what I did. Rs focus to golf r. I wish I went for the golf from day one. The golf suited my needs better. I stage 1 tuned mine and it was the best move I made. It was not to hard on the standard components but it was very noticeable from standard. Stage 1 or 2 tune is a very good place for these. Very capable car. I miss mine so much.
Kevin Pratt I drove my mums auto Yaris a bit ago, went to park it up and my mum had took her belt off. I went to press clutch to coast into a space but hit the brake nearly putting my mum through the windscreen 😂
I was in a mapped 335d in semi auto mode. It didn't have flappy paddles though, it was one with the "pull back, push forward" sequential shifters in the center. I shifted, 1st-2nd-3rd-4th pretty quickly and then there was a bit of a wait as 4th gear was so long and in that wait, I had somehow forgotten that it was an automatic, so when I went to bang gears into 5th I just mashed my foot on the brake at 130+mph. Near beat my face off the steering wheel.

I'm of a certain age to remember the hot hatches of the 80s n 90s and having owned a mk1 golf gti compared hatches to how that car made me feel. I own now a st200 and before than a st180. Never thought the st180 would be as much fun or give me a similar feedback as the golf gti. It was brilliant to see a mk1 gti on your channel and seeing the smile that put on your face driving it. That's what driving is all about no matter what can. If you can jump in drive it and smile from ear to ear then the car as done it's job 👍🏻
Personally i love golfs they are good cars but there is too many on the road that its hard to make your one stand out from the others tommy has hit the nail right on the head and smashed it with the look of it......what a car

Driven 2 of these, a stage 1 auto and also a manual. And I have to say though they are nice, probably quite nice to live with, and pretty quick. My main criticism of them is as you said you feel completely disconnected from what the car is doing. Almost as if you could take your hands and feet off the controls completely and the car will carry on without you. Even the manual didn't really grip me at all. Definitely feels like these things are horrendously underpowered. Or at least need at least 450-500hp to actually be any fun.
450-500 really? It already does 0-100 in 4.5 secs. Dont know what u drive but this is one of the fastest hot hatches out there. I guess we all have different opinions on fun cuz this is one of the best cars ive ever driven.

Agreed, I spent about 800 quid all in and managed to find a partly tuned puma engine and an old mk4 fiesta, 180bhp@800kg and it wiped the floor with a tonne of performance cars. One of the funnest cars I've owned.
I feel like the beauty of this car and other golfs like the mk7 gti is that it's a great car to own and use everyday.. it's not really the car anyone would hire to have an experience in. And I own an edition 40 GTi.

I own a golf gti mk7.5 and it does everything perfect granted I probably should have got an R but these golf just do the everyday so great, the power is there when you need and so is the space and practicality . I feel this guy went into the review with a bad mindset. You can’t compare a golf to a JDM car, it’s different and built to be different. Golf/Vag cars are perfect for UK driving.

Yeah I've found that driving it for a bit is fun but you get use to it. I found you could over do it sometimes cause you think your on rails.there a good all rounder! But so.many people got them for that reason I'd still would of kept the focus but there a lot more money PER MONTH. still a very nice car tommy👊

The Golf R is a great daily car, comfortable and quick. But it’s not the car you take out at the weekend for a good blast.
