  • New gates have been installed at the Fort Totten Metro station in hopes of cutting down on fare evasion but so far, it's not stopped all of those from hopping on for a free ride.

Brah. I think this was the day I was there and yeah I was there and I think I know what you’re talking about of that woman shouting. 😂😂😂. Didn’t know someone was doing a news report of this new subway fare entrance and exit and I was waiting for the bus to take us to Greenbelt and I saw that woman shouting and definitely sounds familiar. I thought she was crazy or sum but she was talking on the phone with all of that rage.

This is bad reporting. The actual story is that the contractor getting paid $40 million for this gig, intentionally designed the gap too wide (a CYA fear of personal injury litigation from criminals who'd maybe get an owie getting stuck).

Yup, I knew the safety mechanism of the door would be easily defeated. Walk behind someone and stick you bag in the closing door or just force it open. It can't close hard enough to injure someone so it's easily popped open.

I was there that day. No lie. It was a woman shouting on the phone with some type of drama. And didn’t know they made a news report when that happened and I was waiting for the bus and saw the woman as it sounds familiar as was at the area that day and time. Funny they caught this on this news. 😂😂

  • @J0k3rl
    @J0k3rl 10 месяцев назад +2

Well yeah, the doors must have a safety mechanism to prevent injury if you got trapped for whatever reason. I guarantee the doors pop with only 20 lbs of force.

You're not going to design a system that's going to be 100% asshole-proof, but these new gates are preventing a good amount of freeloaders from getting a free ride.

Public transportation should be free, then we wouldn’t have to worry about this at all. This pisses me off because i spend my hard earned money while some broke ass dusty jumps the turnstile no problem to go nowhere important.

Be careful what you wish for. By making public transport free you are opening the system to be more dangerous for yourself and others. Just imagine how many more homeless and psychos would be riding the system. Smelly, grubby, urinated trains and you guarding your belongings for dear life, no no no

The ultimate problem with America is capitalism. Public transport should not cost any money to use... this is why we pay taxes. But because everything needs to turn a profit instead of just providing a benefit to everyone, we waste more money on stupid measures like this.

    • @teo2975

What a nonsense statement. NOTHING costs "no money." You apparently don't know the transit system has employees, equipment, maintained etc in the hundreds of millions pf dollars.
The DC and Federal taxpayer already subsidize DC public transport. The vast majority of developed democracies have transit fares, most LESS subsidized not more subsidized. And theft of fares is STEALING from other riders, most of whom pay, DC taxpayers and federal taxpayers. By your logic it should be fine to steal cars, clothes, whatever.
I pay higher rent, and forgo other things i would like to have to live close enough to walk to work. I am already subsidizing people riding metro transit. Are you saying now I should pay even more, all because some minority of riders who are parasite criminals wont stop stealing?

....You pay a premium (fare) for service to go two stops or from one end of the city to another for what? 2 bucks and some change? and less for seniors or ADA, Free for first responders and military servicemen. Next It'll be taxes should equate free Uber and lyft smh

@@Al_Catraz1 Try like 6$/trip. So if you're an average worker, that's a lot of money in a year. Just because this is one problem, doesn't mean its the only problem I care about and this obnoxious attitude is why we can't get anything done. Go away.

Why am I not surprised that FOX “News” is playing this angle? Only 10% of Metro’s budget comes from fares, the rest from taxpayer funds in DC, MD, and VA. If everyone pays by taxes, everyone should be able to ride for free.

🚇 ~ So the city wants to spend billions of dollars on gates that actually won’t work that well, and they refused to do the simplest and most effective solution: tickets and prosecution.

The sad thing is that the MTA already knows how to stop fare jumpers. There are many stations, like mine where the MTA had installed very tall gates many years ago that one cannot get through unless you swipe your card and push yourself through these very tall metal gates. These gates are impenetrable. The MTA has had these type of gates for years so why aren't they installing them everywhere? The MTA acts as if these gates don't exist.
