It's just very awkward to get caught. When I'm in NYC I usually just go through the emergency exit door, really no one cares, even if this very loud alarm sounds. I would say that fare gates actually lead to more fare evasion if they are that easy to beat.

Based on this video .....By enacting this new program, the emergency door is no longer an "emergency door." This imposes a serious risk and exposes the city to more liability (liability that New Yorkers will have to pay for in the long run). Imagine trying to leave through the "emergency door," but it won't open because it's on a timer. It certainly defeats the purpose of the door and leaves one fleeing an actual emergency with limited options.

Agree; putting a timer on the emergency door is a dumb idea. What if you are being pursued? By a criminal? Or what if you need the extra time bc you are in a wheelchair or have lots of children? Or a child in a stroller with two more in tandem? I think it’s a dumb idea. And a waste of time. For everyone.
