Correct, but Egypt's new capital is funded by the UAE, IKN is fully funded by Indonesian tax payers, so far no investor is interested in investing this stupid and wasted jokowi ambition..
Instead of spending the $33 billion into flood mitigation of Jakarta, they did this how stupid. With the amount of money they could've turned Jakarta into the next Amsterdam and continue to inhabit there for hundreds more years.
Jakarta is a disaster waiting to happen. People kept comparing Jakarta with Amsterdam, but they forgot one thing, Island of Java is susceptible to Quake.
Statistically, it does makes sense, but in practice this promote more inequality to the already diverse ethnic groups and their separated regions, especially the eastern side of Indonesia that still underdeveloped from all sectors. Not to mentions, the rice farming culture of the Javanese that lead to unsustainable food policies that replaced the original diets of the eastern Indonesia region that increased a demand for rice more than it should be, while local farmer break their bone in the the rice field without ever gain more income or even cheaper fertilizers. Instead of addressing the root problem, the government tend to choose short term fix by importing rice from Vietnam and others. Also, I lived in West Java which are the most populated province of Indonesia, but when we travel to Southern West Java, it's still underdeveloped since the Soeharto's regime compared to the northern Java, perhaps it's neglected due to mountainous terrains even though it had fertile soils for tea, coffee, rice, and vegetable farming.

0:48 Nusantara isn't in the middle of nowhere though. It's right smack in the middle of two major cities - Balikpapan and Samarinda. Basically they're building the start of a huge metropolitan area.
Without population controls, it will suffer the same fate as Jakarta. Overpopulation with massive unemployment.and crime along with environmental disasters.
To add: Both Balikpapan and Samarinda has similar or even more population than San Fransisco. US has some state capital cities that has 1/10 population of one of them.

It's disappointing to see the Wall Street Journal's video on Nusantara presenting outdated footage and misleading information. Contrary to the claim that Nusantara threatens the rainforest, it is being built in an industrial forest area, which already poses a risk to the rainforest regardless of the new capital's construction. The development of Nusantara includes significant efforts toward sustainability and environmental protection. Accurate reporting is crucial for an informed discussion on this important project. Also the claim that Nusantara is being built "in the middle of nowhere" is inaccurate. Nusantara is strategically located near Balikpapan and Samarinda, both well-connected by toll roads, with plans to link these to Nusantara. These cities will support the new capital. While it's true that local communities face displacement issues, this is a recurring problem due to government incompetence. Instead of halting the project, we should focus on finding solutions to support local communities. Discussions on forums like Skyscrapercity offer more updated and credible information compared to major media outlets like the Wall Street Journal.
Don't expect too much, the bias on this kind of channel is quite obvious so missing information is quite normal. You can say that to most USA base news channel. The main reason behind moving Indonesian capital from Jakarta to Nusantara is never because of Jakarta's sinking problem. While it's true that it's one of the reason, but it's not the key reason. The key reason is because economic development since our independence has always been only concentrated on Java island. So the moving of capital city will symbolize the moving from a Java-centrist development towards an Indonesian-centrist development. As a native Kalimantan, I really appreciate this move as it'll also bring more and more development to our neglected massive island (3rd largest in the world, as big as the country of Turkey).

Nusantara was a geographical name for a place that mostly comprised of most of Indonesia's territory today. The name was used by ancient kingdoms in Java island, including the Majapahit Empire which is the largest empire in Southeast Asia's history. The name was later adopted for the new capital city of Indonesia.3 Mar 2024
But there's also a case that the name 'Nusantara' did not originate from Java, but rather from East Kalimantan itself. Nusantara was the original name of Kutai before the area was named Kutai, which later developed into the Kutai Kertanegara Kingdom, established in the 14th century. This view was put forward by Samarinda historian Muhammad Sarip. He explained that the name 'Nusantara' itself is influenced by Sanskrit (a language from India). However, the word 'nusantara' has become a place name (toponym) for the area in eastern Kalimantan which was later named Kutai, namely before the Kutai Kertanegara Kingdom was established in 1300 AD and lasted for centuries after (compare with the existence of Majapahit 1293-1527 AD).

Id like these kinds of videos to provide SOLUTIONS rather than a never ending critiques for whats already being developed rn. Im indonesian and i dont care much about politics in indonesia but really despise these kinds of videos who are outsiders looking from the outside criticizing whats already been decided and is already on the motion. If they have posted these kinds of videos BEFORE the project has started, its a totally different story. So what exactly the purpose of this? To divide people more? Provoke them? To escalate anxiety among Indonesians? Do you have any real solution you can offer to our government? If you dont then shut up and take care of your own country divisive government.
This nusantara project indeed an expensive white elephant project of jokowi, and merit its critics. Especially when it is made without proper consultations with the people

And what about 'without consultation'? Of course, there was no consultation with the opposition. Remember how the Legislative made the Law of the IKN only in 43 days? the so-called "public consultation" with the Faculty of Law of the University of Mulawarman was rushed, with the draft of the new capital Law was only issued minutes before the "consultation". Funny because you say in binary context that the consultations for the new capital can only be made with govt's allies and not the opposition. Sounds like authoritarianism to me.

Cutting down forests and having spent so much money but there is still no clarity on the fate of this new capital. This shows the absence of a thorough plan. The center of government could actually be moved to PIK 2 island where the costs would definitely be cheaper and there would be no need to destroy forests in Borneo
It’s better to expand your literacy and understanding before making inaccurate comments. Not all of Kalimantan is forested; it’s a stereotype when you don’t delve into the details. The island of Borneo is divided among three countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam. Specifically, Indonesian Kalimantan has quite advanced and developing industrial areas, as well as rapidly growing cities. Our new capital city is situated between two major cities, Balikpapan and Samarinda. On the other hand, the forested areas are protected and will not be destroyed, as our capital city is built on industrial eucalyptus plantations, not natural forests.
@@zzeroemissions3364 What a naive thoughts. With the new capital, soon the forested area of Kalimantan and its indigenous people will be perished. The capital will grow, and with habits of mismanagement like in Jakarta, soon the corruption and devastation will engulf Kalimantan. Haven't you heard that floods are getting more and more frequent in East Kalimantan since the development of the New Capital? Probably you have heard, but chose to cherrypick the facts
As a Malaysian (living in East Malaysia, Sabah).... I hope this mega project can be successful..... ** this will force Peninsular Malaysia to quickly develop Sabah/Sarawak..... ** Sabah/Sarawak is some what behind in development; compare to Peninsular Malaysia
If you develop Sabah/Sarawak it will take a lot of deforestation and that is not good for the environment and nature. Every year the federal government gives out to state governments grants for development. Ask your ministers what did they do with the money?! The grant you got ain't small! The responsibility to develop the states rest with the state government NOT Federal government!
I was in Jakarta and Borneo in 1996. Jakarta was highly polutted whereas Borneo was lush and green. I see this move as a matter of running away from their environmental problems instead of fixing their problems. Continued rampant corruption is the most likely outcome.
I don't know why Western medias seem to make you think that the main reason behind moving our capital city is because of Jakarta's sinking problem, it's not. It's simply means a move towards Indonesia-centric development, moving from a Java-centric one.
@@karnifexkarnifex8566hmmm, is it though? Last year saw Jakarta in first place of countries with highest air pollution from May through to October/ November. This is the kind of competition you do NOT want to be No 1 in! Instead of spending 33bn on deforestation/building another steel and concrete monstrosity (which in itself invalidates any claim to Nusantara being sustainable), it could have been invested towards gradually turning Jakarta into a smart city. 12-13 stops for the MRT train is a joke, when this should have been rolled out throughout the city. How much of the investment money actually went into the MRT project? The city could do with more green spaces including trees. Main roads like Jl Sudirman don’t need such wide pavement; pavement could be split for a variety of plants and shade-giving trees to cool down the area. (Then again, they might be overcompensating for the actual lack of save-to-walk pedestrian areas. It’s such car/motorbike centric infrastructure, it’s no wonder that nothing much has happened. I agree only in that Jakarta centrism is as much a problem as London centrism is. But again that comes down to a number of questions including: How can we connect places in an actually sustainable way without destroying more vital natural habitat, displacing animals and indigenous peoples? And will this REALLY solve other problems such as inequalities and lingering corruption? And how can the country as a whole transform its economy away from an exploitation of finite natural resources to a long lasting, sustainable model? And this barely scratches the surface of this very complex problem.
They should have modernised the other big cities in Java instead of spending gigantic budget to a new capital. Jakarta compared to other hub cities have a huge gap in many aspects.

Can someone please explain to me how it is environmentally friendly to build a huge city on top of thousands of hills, so that it's residents will pretty much depend on motorised means of transportation, levelling out some of those hill resulting in tons of fuel to be used for landscaping alone, deforesting vast areas and choosing a location which predestines air traffic as the sole method for the rest of the country to get there quickly. It's good that Indonesia starts to de-centralise with this project but stop the greenwashing please.

Once again, our new capital city is designed with the concept of a 'green city,' and not all hills will be flattened, as hills are an integral part of our city’s design. Additionally, it's important to clarify that motor vehicles or subsidized vehicles will not be allowed to pass through the IKN capital city. This is in line with the city’s concept and the presidential regulation prohibiting subsidized vehicles starting from 2030 (or sooner).
@@zzeroemissions3364 Sweetie, why so pressed? You just have to look once at the satellite images to see: Those plantations are also full of palm trees and sometimes, construction did reach into natural forests as well. "Not all of Kalimantan is forested; it’s a stereotype when you don’t delve into the details. The island of Borneo is divided among three countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam. Why do you think I wouldn't know that? Stop that foolishness. It's embarrassing. You've never met me. And would you bring that up anyway? Malaysia or Brunei Darussalam have literally nothing to do with this project, because it is the new Indonesian capital. That's right, Indonesian capital, not theirs. The hills and mountains of Kalimantan were in fact very much forested - until humans decided to cut or burn the natural forests down to make room for plantations or other economic projects. That's a fact. The decrease of natural forested areas on Kalimantan in the recent past are well documented, google it. Good bye. Live your life with your one-sided views :) "and not all hills will be flattened" oh and congratulations for repeating exactly what I said. If you know one thing about constructions, you'd know that moving around soil is an extremely energy consuming division of it. That's also one of the reason why battery-run vehicles aren't necessarily better for our environment as they are depended on components sourced from mining. If you want to have clean means of transportation in cities, you have to implement just three things: pedestrian friendly, cyclists friendly, very good network of public transport. It's actually a very easy recipe. But I doubt that the hills of Nusantara will be inviting to walk or cycle for a few km while communiting to work. But we will see about that.

And please understand that while there are indeed forested areas affected by the construction, these areas are primarily focused on the development of highways, main roads, and other access routes to IKN. Afterward, these areas will be reforested. Any development will have some environmental impact, but that does not mean this project is indifferent to the damage caused. In fact, it is a positive aspect, as the city's concept includes green spaces and reforestation programs mandated by the President. Moreover, any human-made development will inevitably have an impact. If we only look at Kalimantan without considering its own damaged areas due to development, it would be hypocritical. The reality is that human populations are growing, and land is becoming more expensive. Therefore, relocating the capital is the right step to balance the economy across our country with its hundreds of islands separated by oceans. Additionally, Kalimantan, specifically East Kalimantan, is the most suitable central location for the capital, as Java houses 60% of our population and is poorly integrated due to its location across islands. Furthermore, Java is dangerous as it is in the red zone of the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it unsuitable for future human habitation due to rising sea levels, active volcanoes, and declining land surface.

I feel that even without moving the capital, development would be fairly even. What is needed is not moving the capital but greater autonomy to local governments.

Otonomi yang ditambah juga berarti kesempatan buat pemprov pemkab dan pemkot untuk korup juga lebih besar, bayangkan ada berapa ratus pemerintahan daerah di Indonesia.

I'm an Indonesian citizen, and I don't actually agree with this. If it do work, I'll be glad, but there are still a lot of other urgent problems that needed to be addressed rather than working on something completely new.
Literally Indonesia doesn’t need this!!! I don’t understand why bad people ruin good places
I would disagree for Jakarta called as LA since Movie Producing is not as big as economy investment in Jakarta
Especially when it is made without proper consultations with the people
@@wiry7428 Huh? Which community are you talking about? We, people from Kalimantan, support this development. Just because you failed in your choice doesn’t mean that 60% of us who support the continuing government and the new capital project are against it. You do not represent the entire community. And what about 'without consultation'? Of course, there was no consultation with the opposition. I am from Sepaku, which will be part of IKN, and all the residents of Sepaku support this major project. You should know that.
It’s called constructive criticism. The media will be the media. Our media does the same. Comments are just comments and its our job to come up with a solution. If you dislike a product you’d tell them the issues and their job to come up with the solution
@@zzeroemissions3364 Ask the Balek and Paser indigenous people who are evicted from their ancestral land for Pinnochio van Java's ambitions. You may have the privilege inside your air-conditioned resident in Sepaku (or Jakarta?) to comment like this.
The proper consultation was not made.
Indonesian economy is not diversified enough for this grandeur project.

Way to go Indonesia! May this new capital will be successful as Jakarta and more.
I was in Jakarta and Borneo in 1996. Jakarta was highly polutted whereas Borneo was lush and green. I see this move as a matter of running away from their environmental problems instead of fixing their problems. Continued rampant corruption is the most likely outcome.
This is 2024. no longer 1996.
@@kudajingkrak4919 did they clean up? Has corruption been eliminated? If no is the answer to either then your protest is invalid.
@@clydedenby1436 it is cleaner and corruptions has been curbed. Still not the cleanest city and/or the least corrupt city.
Java again Java again.... Did you know there is an entire rest of the country outside Java?

Can someone please explain to me how it is environmentally friendly to build a huge city on top of thousands of hills, so that it's residents will pretty much depend on motorised means of transportation, levelling out some of those hill resulting in tons of fuel to be used for landscaping alone, deforesting vast areas and choosing a location which predestines air traffic as the sole method for the rest of the country to get there quickly.
It's good that Indonesia starts to de-centralise with this project but stop the greenwashing please.

Our new capital city is situated between two major cities, Balikpapan and Samarinda. On the other hand, the forested areas are protected and will not be destroyed, as our capital city is built on industrial eucalyptus plantations, not natural forests.
First of all, I know of the three countries on Borneo Island.
Good bye. Live your life with your one-sided views :)
"and not all hills will be flattened" oh and congratulations for repeating exactly what I said.

IKN is not a project of the wishes of the Indonesian people. It's just President Jokowi's wish that the capital of Indonesia be located far from the center of the Indonesian people on the island of Java
