i born and live in java, i don't have any problem with this capital city relocating, all i wish is the developer will be much much much more concern about environmental issues, Kalimantan is too precious for us, not only for Indonesia but for the earth and the entire population, Kalimantan is blessed with a beautiful rain forest and the diversity in it, i just hope human greediness doesn't destroy it's true wealth just like we destroy java island, mega city with it's skyscraper is nothing compared to Kalimantan's priceless nature.

There is simply no other way it will happen. The new capital will destroy the rainforest around it, then they will destroy further tracts for palm oil, then they will build many high ways to speed up the destruction. The very project is a catastrophe, and it is impossible for it to be any other way. All hail money! Unfortunately, the ecological consciousness of most Indonesians is nill. Look at the comment section - mostly support, "oh the economy" and no thought of nature.

Since i'm from West borneo myself. I can assure you that Borneo is like a wet dream for tropical city designer because most tropical islands are small and dangerous due to volcanic activities and earthquake, Borneo never had any of that (i live here for 20 years and never in my life have i experienced an earthquake). However, enviromental problem caused by palm oil industry can already be seen across the island. So here's hoping that moving a huge administration center like *The state capital* would see more regulations actually being enforced more effectively.

    Another fun facts is:
Indonesian Government since Independence (1945) already moved the capital city 5 times in 5 years due to political and military instability:
    Jakarta (1945-1946)
    Yogyakarta (1946-1948)
    Bukittinggi (1948-1949)
    Yogyakarta (1949-1950)
    Jakarta (1950-...)
So, If the government declare the capital city is Nusantara by 2024 ,then Indonesia government already moved its capital city 6 times. I believe that is the world record for this achievement 😁

An interesting take i heard on this was that this is also a geopolitical move, by moving the capital to east kalimantan, Indonesia opens up an eastern corridor that will be able to take away influence from the straits of Malacca. This is in line with the history of the empires in Java and the influence the straits of Malacca they are subjected to. By creating this eastern corridor they allow for trade from north asia to flow downwards to Taiwan, the Philippines, and finally through eastern Indonesia thereby decreasing the dependence of Indonesia in the straits.

What is more important - the "development" (I hate this buzzword) of a single nation for its own sake, mostly meaning more money for the already filthy riches, OR the last large tract of primary rainforest in Sundaland that has the intrinsic value for the whole humanity? When all is said and done, Indonesians as a nation don't value their natural treasures and the immense biodiversity very much, if at all. It's like nature is only seen via its economic value. Rainforests = "undeveloped barren land" etc. Stories of what stopped the destruction on Siberut and of recent provincial vs central governments' disagreements in Papua are very telling of the mentality.

With our capital moves, people projected the traffic between two borders and the economical impact throughout those three countries in the island will risen up. That also means, there'll be a better infrastructure since our president has planned the high speed train to be build in the new capital.

As a person from Myanmar, the best reason we think the military moved the capital is because of their need for safety in an environment when they were increasingly unpopular. They wanted to be safe and they've even built multiple safeguards into Naypyidaw's design such as the 20-30 lane highways which double as landing strips for military planes in case of an emergency. The military has done what it wanted with selfish and little thought like change the country's name, cancel currency that was not a multiple of the dictator's lucky number etc. So it's safe to say climate change concerns would have been insignificant or even negligible in their thought process

I myself did working in the goverment handling this particular case (i did work in ministry of works as a consultant) and the video is actually pretty much accurate in terms how reasons why we need to move out capital. If i may, i want to add much of information as well as aggregated opinion (both by government and its people) regarding this issue
    1. True that Jakarta sinking fast due to heavy usage of ground water, so much so that recently there are issues of limiting ground water usage in several districts inside Jakarta, while also making retension well to increase water absorbtion into ground. It is already discussed between goverment and local representative council (DPRD) to pass this plan into a law to be enforced.
    2. As for new capital itself, it is still have issues. While yes Kalimantan (Borneo) has advantage of being earthquake "free" and less potency of geological disaster, it is by no means still pretty much affected in terms in ecological threat such as flooding (although it won't be severe as Jakarta) and smog. Now i highlighted about smog because this problem is, by any means, will haunt new capital as well. You see, when you say Borneo is a lush rain forest, that is not true either, since there now more and more jungles were cut open to make palm oil plantation (and yes, Borneo provide pretty much most of world, if not Indonesian, production of palm oil) as well as opening new coal mines. and these often make bush fire shows up. While yes not much fatalities, it still threatens much of jungles itself, and providing dangerous smog that can threat Borneo in general (and the capital in particular). Borneo itself did engulfed in such smog that not only affected some of its cities inside the island, it also impacted western part of Indonesia, heck even Singapore and Malaysia as well
    3. Many concerning that the new capital will be an empty husk just like Naypyidaw, instead of like Brazilia or Abuja. Well i have to say that it kinda not true but it actually is. See, indeed since most of Indonesian population heavily concentrated on Java, the island, especially Jakarta, became a centre in economics in our country. So much so that all of headquarters of national company lies in Jakarta pr its satelite cities. Not to mention there is a kind of sentiment that sums up an old belief between indonesian society
    "It's better work near homeland"
It means that you just want to work near your birthplace, or your homeland or sort. Not many Indonesians are eager to move outside their homeland (and if they do, most won't come back either). These means relocation such people to new capital, in and itself, is a major task. While yes, civil servants as well as armed force can be "mandated" to live there together with their families, same thing won't be easy to ask an enterprise or national compamy to move their headquarters there except if there are compensation or sort.
    4. And finally, the most pain in the ass of all, politics. See, there is still a dividing opinion whether the capital shpuld be moved at all. While yes the Jakartans many agree, still there are some who disagree just because the politics (put it simply, Jokowi was like Indonesian version of Biden. Quite a lot hate his government) and the oppositions are mostly egomaniacs (although again, governmental supporters are also egomaniacs so, not much difference) and this pretty much affected how on policy be made. See, while indeed there is thorough research for the choice of site for new capital. There is also someone who taking this as an advantage for personal business (and yes. Some of politicians in ministerial and representative level do have a palm oil plantation or coal mines) that quite disturbing. Although again, we can't much say about this since politics in Indonesia itself (if not global) are a complex one
Therefore i can say that i might be pessimistic about the plan, but i do hope at least people realize that this thing are actually necessary.

During the Spanish empire when Spain first got the EQ. island of Bioko plus other small islands and part of the mainland coast, EQ. was administered from Bueno Aires Argentina. Spain took over administration once Argentina declared Independence. Spain use to administer the islands and mainland separately. Both have different ethnic groups. Spain in time united both and then gave them independence after being pressured by the UN. That time they did not know there were huge reserves of oil off waters of the main island of Bioko. So economically that island is important. But this oil wealth has caused Bioko original ethnic group to be overwhelmed by the ethnic groups coming from the more populated mainland. This explains why some want independence for there island. When it comes to oil on the mainland, it seems it still needs to be discovered.

I use to go to a school in a town called BSD, which is about 30 minutes by highway from South Jakarta where I live, but it shares one of the most important highways around Jakarta. • @Nukepositive

The traffic is bad, but the main problem is our policy on transportation more than population density. Everyone here (I'm also in JakSel) takes cars or motorbikes. The sidewalks are unsafe if they even exist, and a pedal bike is too dangerous. I love the BRT and train network, but there's just not enough routes. Transfers are sometimes a pain: the overhead walks at Semanggi and Kuningan take a while; Kebayoran has a train and a bus a few hundred meters apart, but there's no safe passage between; BRT exists on the inner ring, but not TB Simatupang, so a trip from Pasar Minggu to Kebon Jeruk that takes a car 30 minutes and almost no turns must be done in two hours and three transfers by transit.

this sounds like a great plan. It sounds very hopeful, but with great intentions for Indonesia's population and growth in the future.

I can vouch for the traffic from Bogor to Jakarta. I lived in Cibubur, Bogor for 2 months and it was terrible. Even to move around within Bogor. We missed an important business meeting, the reason for us to be in the country due to traffic, at 8 am.. This coming from a person who lived in Bangalore for years which has the worst traffic in all of India... 😑
Edit- some people asking to use public transport. 6 of us were in a Grab taxi. This incident is from 3 years ago. We certainly didn't have our own cars as expats on short term visit..

Well, from someone that has lived in bogor for 16 years, im absolutely delighted that they gonna try to solve the issues in jakarta, cause every problem in jakarta will indirectly affect the greater surrounding area of jabodetabek (jakarta, bogor, depok, tanggerang, bekasi)

Last week i rode a motorbike from Depok west java from 06.15AM and reach Pancoran south Jakarta at 07.55. can you believe that? It took another half hour to reach my destination in Cakung east Jakarta.

@@andreas4010 Indonesia is Anti Public transit. They're so materialistic they want to be seeing as rich and wealthy people so they bought private vehicle instead. With easyness and cheap Down Payment, even the low income can have their own vehicle. It's too American Centric.

Great video! I'm a native of East Borneo (Balikpapan) which is just few km away from the new planned capital, and I've spent half my life living in Jakarta before moving to Japan for studying. I completely agree with the decision to move the capital to Kalimantan because Jakarta has too many problems due to urbanization in the last 50 years.
