As a foreigner who has lived in Indonesia for the last 20 years, no mention was made of a key political aspect as to why to move the capital. That is, to move the capital out of Java, which is believed by many non Javanese Indonesians to dominate them and the country, whether it be politically, economically or culturally. The new location is further east and more central of the country as a whole and it is hoped will send a signal to the whole country that the government serves all and not dominated by one particular ethnic group.

    • @yucode7356

that's one of primary objectives, but you can't spell it out explicitly. jokowi has at least hinted at it several times. not only he wants distribution of socioeconomical wealth but also equal ethno representation in public service, and to see perhaps one day, a non-Javanese president.
the pull factor (equality, justice) is bigger than the push factor (jakarta's issues), it's sad that journalists always see the push factor alone.

If you want equal socioeconomic distribution.. build new industrial zones, not an extravagant new capital. Batam is advanced than the majority of Indonesia provinces because it serves as *industrial and economic* hub, not because "it is our capital city". If you want equal distribution then build industrial zones in every *PROVINCES* .. building new capital city is actually again a very centralistic mindset. I bet the situation in Sulawesi Tengah, Nusa Tenggara Timur, Maluku, and Papua Barat provinces would still be the same even after this costly new capital city has been finished. Because these provinces have no industrial zone for job creation and local economic acceleration.

Just look at 'The Ring of Fire' lines on the map. Indonesia has hundred of active volcanoes in that line and few of tectonic plates. Kalimantan island is the only big island in Indonesia's territory with the minimum of tsunami and earthquake. So, moving the capital to Kalimantan island already planned since the beginning of Soekarno era (1940's).
I think Java island still the centre of economy and business (like New York city thing), but politic centre will move to the new capital (like Washington). That's also would affect Indonesia's geopolitic policy. Kalimantan island basically in the centre of South East Asia on the map, and the fact that 'Nusantara' is one of suggestion name of the new capital also could tell a lot. Nusantara is the old name for South East Asia when ASEAN nation back then basically unite in the era of Sriwijaya kingdom and Majapahit empire, before European colonization and imperialism came. Golden time.

I think its a good idea somehow, some people must have to think further to avoid the mass destructive disaster in the future, and the big risk causes comes when stay on the ring of fire, including java island that have plenty of active volcano, and in the mean time disaster often occur in java island like flood, earthquake or volcano eruptions. so it is has a possibility that the disaster on the ring of fire will be massive in the future.

I don't think the people think this project will fail because of money and corruption. I see it more in the social situation in Indonesia. There is a huge development gap during the areas. So people will always be pulled to "developed" areas in hope for a better live, even they won't have it. So this new City will also be overcrowded in a few decades (and Indonesia im generell is complete overpopulated)
Also there are some "cultural" problems, you can't solve that fast. Indonesians don't like to walk or take public transportation. People want their privat transport with their Moped or car. Especially car because until today it Shows a good income. Just in Jakarta there are over 4 Million cars and 13 Million motorbicycles.
In Nusantara there would be the same traffic and are polution problems like in Jakarta...

Pedestrian friendly, sadly, Jakarta is not. I hope by the time this things gets built motorbikes will be electric only, and that they will have segregated lanes for autos, motorbikes & scooters, and pedestrians. Walking along the MRT near Blok M on Jalan Fatimawati at 7pm last night the air index was 201! The only positive change I have noticed after having returned to Jakarta after having been gone 9 years (I lived here between 2011-2013) is that the orange bajaj (tuk-tuk) and Metro-mini public buses have disappeared and the TransJakarta has a few electric buses. Meanwhile, all around Jakarta Selatan houses have been growing higher with more population density with the same poor infrastructure. No wonder this is the fastest sinking city on earth. It would take a fortune to remedy the infrastructure + a CCP-style dictatorship, neither of which Indonesia has. *IF* the governor and local authorities were to enact AND enforce strict zoning and building codes, over time things potentially could get better, but those two things are, IMO, impossibilities. Ahok was the closest they got to having someone who worked to clean up Jakarta, and we all know what happened to him.

There's also the political reason, Indonesians learned from the New Order period that having the capital inside Java, where the Javanese is the major ethnicity, caused the government to concentrate development only to Java for the most part. Widodo is a visionary, he knows that to push development to Indonesia as a whole, the capital must be moved. Politically, Kalimantan is the most ideal place, it's right at the heart of Indonesia, it'll make it easier for our national armed forces to mobilize the troops too, so our soldiers can respond to China in the north, Australia in the south and the OPM separatist group in the east more efficiently

    • @satriamjati
      @satriamjati Год назад

I don't think that's the case, in political.
It could be just as simple as 'a capital reflects nation'. It's not unusual with more development in the capital itself. As for other cities development in Java, anything can support the capital to be better city. If the capital can't offer some facilities but other cities have them, it should be easier to provide transport to access. If the capital can't offer some facilities but no one have them, they would make one nearest accessible. It's nothing about ethnic, so if the capital were in Nusantara, then major development must be in Kalimantan, even there were indiginous or Javanese imigrants. Remember, every province or city can develop theirself without the capital influence.
As for military, it could be a good one in Kalimantan but it's not that bad in Jakarta. I see Jakarta as better place for south aggression than Kalimantan. Troops mobilize can use the whole Java island, easiest to approach south and west side of Indonesia. This one is an example why concentrate development to the whole island. Nusantara could also use larger portion of Kalimantan, not right after but eventually if whole province developed. If you said Australia is a potential threat, then we might also have Malaysia as a part of the Commonwealth, 'threat among us'. Nusantara would do the job there. To counter China in Kep. Riau (as the most exposed border of Indonesia to China), Jakarta is also not a bad option if troops mobilize through the whole Kalimantan still a problem.

Hi, Assalamualaikum. As Malaysian Malay, I'm strongly support the Indonesian economic move as well this new Indonesia Capital City NUSANTARA because it will surely benefited all Indonesian as the whole structure. I don't see any similarity with other country so called Ghost City because Indonesian People is totally different. They are not a LAZY people. They are currently working almost every where in the world & the government surely has it own STRONG plan to develop a vast new job opportunity for the people & I'm very optimistic that this new Capital will Excel & succeeded like a Putrajaya in Malaysia.
For an example as an analogy, Kuala Lumpur a capital of Malaysia once upon a time was also packed with people & its rapid development. When the city almost loaded with people and all of its development as well its rapid growth of achievement, then our ex Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohammed decided to move our Government Capital to PUTRAJYA in a land of no where which is full of Palm Trees & forest in Sepang area which no one believed it will succeeded.
However our Ex Prime Minister has its own dream & always look into a new Malaysia future great living place as well its new economic center in Malaysia. PREVIOUSLY, Malaysia Government office & its administration were scattered all over Kuala Lumpur & Selangor state in several kilometer radius every each department building and it has created a difficulties to Malaysian people managing their activities with the government sector as well within its government administrator activities.
HOWEVER NOW... all its Government office & all its administration office BUILDING currently located at ONLY ONE CENTER AREA side by side in Putrajaya. THIS IS THE MALAYSIAN MASSIVE ACHIEVEMENT. All the Government servant houses, thousand of them are also located just nearby to their office building which is surrounding the Administration building. This is Brilliant...! By then, the new economic opportunity & its demand as well the new job opportunities were also developed within Putrajaya or its nearby. So Putrajaya is ALIVE successfully UNTIL TODAY & InsyaAllah its will grow bigger in due time. I'm saying this because I also currently living in Putrajaya. The point is I can get almost everything in this world just only in Putrajaya it self.
THEREFORE, that is the reason why I BELIEVED THE NEW PLACEMENT OF CAPITAL OF INDONESIA WILL SUCCEEDED by the brilliant planned of Mr President Jokowi. I'm very optimistic it will succeeded.
BY THE WAY, no doubt the challenge as well the objection will always be there. So face the challenge accordingly. Move forward & do not step back. Dengan penuh tekad, yakin & percaya bahawa kalian juga akan berjaya. Tiada kejayaan tanpa halangan. Matlamat kalian ini cukup besar begitu juga dengan rintangannya. NAMUN terus yakin, jujur & terus maju InsyaAllah pasti berjaya. Salam dari kami, jiran & saudara sebangsa, sedarah & seagama kalian, Malaysia.

The carbon capture area is the protected forest which is the area with heterogeneous plant not the homogeneous like the area of nusantara

    The Nusantara plan include :
No plan to build a port
Plan to Building a national park & orang utan conservation
The gateway to nusantara are Penajam airports (inside nusantara area) and the city of Samarinda & Balikpapan
    For net zero emissions :
There is already plan to use new energy such as geothermal, nuclear, hydro, solar etc also not to use only one source of new energy
The problem is geothermal / hydro sometimes located in indigenous area or even protected area,
for nuclear, our common people lack knowledge of nuclear energy so they become anti nuclear energy

So, as Indonesian, let me add some reasons why Indonesia eventually need to move its capital from Jakarta to Borneo / Kalimantan (this, of course, taken from my PoV). First of all, Indonesia probably has one of the biggest development gap between its capital (Jakarta) and other cities. Let's not mention city outside Java (like those in Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, or Papua for example), even within Java island itself the gap between Jakarta and other cities are quite huge, which I think is product of years long of misplanned development and various political agendas of previous governments (which focused more on the capital city to prove their works and tend to neglect other area, which rarely visited by media compared to Jakarta). At such, rapid mass urbanization happened over time where people from all across Indonesia moved to Jakarta in order to make more money (in 2014 census, 11% of overall Indonesia population are inhabited this city, which probably only less than 1% of total Indonesian land mass). Second, I think because Kalimantan is rather "safe" geologically compared to other regions in Indonesia (Remember that Indonesia is often reeived natural disaster such as tsunami, earthquake, volcano, etc). As Jakarta is the center of almost every aspect in Indonesia (government, business, education, entertainment, trade, etc). If something happened to Jakarta, then it'll be total mess of the country situation. The last, by strategically chose the new capital in Kalimantan, which located in the "center" of the archipellago (Indonesia is the largest archipelagic state in the world), may influence next government to develop more fairly. Of course it'll take years (maybe not in our lifetime) before we see the expected result, but I think it's a really good innitiative that Indonesia should take since long time ago.

Jakarta with DECADES of sooo unfair advantages (with respect to the other regions), chances, privileged and its inherited head start should responsible to solve its own problem without taking hostage the rest of the country from their development opportunities.
Why every westerner report always start about jakarta city? Indonesia is more vast than Europe! Jakarta is a capitalist megapolitan, it has nothing to do that is has to be a definite capital of the country at the expenses of other regions.

My comment will be in Bahasa. The Ministry in charge to distributing the workload to state owned contractor, and the contractors themselves increasing the work price for some personal/team benefits. The corruption is the core culture of the Indonesia feudalism itself.

@@savemoney5111 I'm talking about the Garuda flood barrier, not the capital. Dutch companies will be the ones who build that thing.

It's some sort of a way to redo all the city planning which happened in the past. There are pros and cons but what Indonesia doing so not only socially and economically but they try to manipulate time and distance as their resources is mostly on their Eastern Territory.

Anything we did in life, simple or complex thing, there are always consequences. Whatever the impact might come, emerging new capital to Nusantara (or wherever) is right decision because having options is better than not. Jakarta is in strain, the new capital would ease it slightly at least.

Nobody mentions the military strategic reasons why they move there. Its no coincidence that it is near "strategic sea lane 2"= makassar strait and lombok strait. This is alternative to Malacca strait and Sunda strait which is near Jakarta.

Egypt is also relocating its capital from Cairo..... Bangladesh is also relocating its capital from Dhaka to Purbachal....for similar reason... Excessive pressure of mass people.... Pollution..... So no other way than creating a new capital...
