- Indonesia is relocating its capital city. With a budget of $33 billion they plan to build a futuristic and sustainable city. Construction is in full swing with the first district opening later this year. In today’s video, we’re going to look at how Indonesia is carving a brand new megacity out of the jungle and why this is not only beneficial but also problematic.

I live in West Kalimantan, Kalimantan is far behind the other islands in Indonesia because the development mostly occurs in Java island. The governments take our resources and brings most of the money to build Java.
We want our future too, we also lacked in public transportation like bus to go anywhere in our city so we have to use our own vehicles and it makes traffic jam and the underdeveloped roads make it worse. Even my hometown which is only 2 hours from the capital city of West Kalimantan doesn't has electricity yet so we have to use generator and the road hasn't been tarmaced !
So I really hope our new Capital City wont just be the central government, but also a lot of investment for the transportation, roads, living quality, new cities, etc for the Kalimantan people.
2 hours from the island capital, and you don’t even have electricity? The Indonesian government really needs to set their priorities straight. I hope that areas further away from Nusantara are still built up at least a little bit.
But even that seems unlikely, because I wouldn’t be surprised if billions or extra dollars are needed and a few extra are taken to finish this.

Pemindahan Ibu Kota Indonesia sudah direncanakan sejak lama, Karena Kondisi Jakarta sangat tidak stabil.
Jakarta terlalu padat, kumuh, banjir, macet, transportasi publik buruk, dst.
Namun baru sekarang bisa dilakukan karena Indonesia selama ini adalah negara miskin (tidak punya uang)

Sehingga inilah momen yang tepat untuk memindahkan Ibu Kota (Karena sudah mulai punya uang)
Mengapa memilih Nusantara, area hutan kosong untuk menjadi lokasinya?
Ide pertama pindah saja ke kota yang sudah ada seperti "Balikpapan/Samarinda/Makasar" yang lokasinya ditengah Indonesia dan aman dari ancaman gempa/letusan gunung.
Tetapi akan sulit membangun area vital seperti pusat pertahanan dan lokasi strategis lainnya sebagai pusat simbol negara besar. Sehingga lebih baik memilih area kosong/hutan dan dibangun semua dari awal.
"Apakah ini mungkin sukses?."
Jika mengacu atas pertumbuhan ekonomi negara kami yang sangat ekponesial dari tahun 2005 hingga sekarang, maka Pemindahan Ibu Kota ini akan sukses karena kami punya sumber daya lebih dari cukup untuk ini.

@@ajiigo7664 dalam setiap kebijakan politik selalu ada pro kontranya. apa lagi pihak2 yg punya kepentingan mencari suara kayak yg menolak IKN kamaren, maka hal2 admistrasi dijadikan bahan seolah2 zolim/paksa dst.nya. Mana mungkin ada pemaksaan, ini udah zaman keterbukaan, demokrasi. Pasti sudah berikan ganti rugi yg layak bahkan berkali2lipat lebih.
Semua negara besar punya pusat negara yang terintegrasi, terutama keamanannya. Jakarta tidak bisa. Ke Bogor juga tidak bisa. Ke Jonggol dan sekitar Jawa sudah tidak bisa. Namun hal2 seperti tidak disampaikan secara terbuka oleh pihak Istana karena lucu aja, dimana semua elit pasti paham bahkan lawan politik juga mengerti, jika suatu negara besar itu pusat negaranya harus punya sistem perlindungan super level 1. Kita punya peluang jadi negara besar. jadinya negara2 lain pastinya nga senang, terutama yang udah maju, nanti nga bisa lagi impor barang2 mentah dari Indonesia yang harganya murah.
Apakah kamu ingin Indonesia maju?. Saya bukan pendukung Jokowi tapi jika menyangkut kepentingan Indonesia. Pasti saya dukung. Tidak melihat drama2 politiknya. Indonesia yg utama. there's something wrong with the map at 3:36 it was the former map of east kalimantan which is now split into a new province of north kalimantan and east kalimantan as per 2012
I'm Indonesian, for me this project is really needed. This is the first step to equalize development throughout Indonesia. And regarding the problems in this development, I have to say, there is no big plan without sacrifice. And in the vastness of Indonesia, there will definitely be sacrifices, we cannot please everyone, only Indonesia's progress is the most important.
Reflecting on Indonesia's past experiences, we have also gone through several sacrifices, even a lot of blood was shed for the progress and unity of this nation, outsiders should not interfere too much in Indonesian affairs.
Equalizing developments could be done by funding other cities throughout the Islands, sorry to say but this is just for the sake of legacy and symbolism

Just want to add that the "jungle" has already cut down decade ago to make way for tree plantion (similar to palm plantion instead it's producing timber), now they are replacing it for a forest city concept which is technically reforestation?
I hope the plan came through as it much more humane than most of cities in North America and new cities in Middle East, those very high towers and relient on cars is not good for well being of the people

The city was carefully planned. Learning from experiences, this city will develop following the rules of a quality city. With good connectivity with other cities and good and thorough planning, this city will not become a ghost town. Even though Indonesia still has various shortcomings, experience shows that Indonesia is able to solve its problems one by one, including in developing IKN.

As Indonesian my self.. Imo Nusantara is great economically.. Massive corporation will move out to IKN, because its basically more structured than Jakarta. What I mean by that is that moving from your office to other places maybe meetings with other business man is like a hard task to do knowing how wild the traffic is.
The thing is that we reall are still mostly powered by coal.. which is very destructive to the enviroment.. and the indigenous people need atleast a place to live. Yeah its a massive chunk of land owned by Prabowo's brother its still their living place.. atleast help them to move out with compensation earlier would be easier and better to deal with..

Actually during colonial era, dutch already have a plan to move Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) capital from Batavia (Jakarta) to Bandoeng (Bandung).. but then cancelled after Japan came in 1942,
Ya betul, makanya di Bandung banyak bangunan / rumah2 peninggalan pejabat Hindia Belanda.
The designer had a ted talk explaining it, sofian sibarani, but the video shown is old... it wqs when the city was planned much closer to the coast, now its more uphill. Basically less changing of the natural landscape and like indonesian traditional houses on stilts, hence the elevated platforms.
Shau won that but the winner were two, so they planned to combined some elements of their designs. Shau also designed other stuff in the new capital.
Theres also less publicised legislative buildings and judicial building.
The exact location chosen to build the entire complex of presidential palace and new city around it is not actually by cutting down a natural rainforest, but a land owned by state owned agribusiness company, and this land only had one species of plant which is eucalyptus for paper industry, so it's a monoculture artificial forrest, not a natural rainforest.
When the government building the new capital all the eucalyptus will be cut down and change it by planting new trees with endemic species of plants, or you can call it reforestation to the original condition like before.

I went to a lot of villages in east and north borneo, and have a lot of conversation with any of indegenious people here. yes they all need some changes to development. and this nusantara was a huge chance for us. we do contribute a lot of things to build this city.

Yes, I’m confident this is the right move and shifting from focusing on Java to strategically placed the new capital in Borneo (think of Wash DC vs New York) and most importantly with environmental issues this is a good solution & in line with 2030 SDG. Third, this affects the economy in the future and seamless communication among islands.
Lastly, as a land that boast 17K islands, the new Capital embodies Indonesia philosophy “Unity in Diversity” & in time across the board development with latest green tech. Win-win investment.

Nusantara is located between the city of Balikpapan and Samarinda.
To visit the site, one can fly to Balikpapan or Samarinda. Both cities have their own airports and also connected by toll road. Some new toll roads are being constructed to connect from the existing toll road to Nusantara.

The capital is moved not because of Jakarta facing drowning issues, but the government wants to redistribute the development, have its very own Indonesian character, and a representative city while at the same time lessening Jakarta's burden.

Throughout the first 10 minutes I was surprised you keep talking about the positive points only. I was anticipating a lot of criticism since this megaproject has already invite many heated discussion among us Indonesian. But it turns out very well in the end of the video.
Moving our capital is definitely necessary. Jakarta collapsing at visible speed and huge imbalance of development between islands, Kalimantan has been eyed since the beginning of our country's founding. I hope that moving the capital right at the heart of Indonesia can alleviate most of existing issues and catalyze more equality and economic growth.

1. Invertors are holding back on investing because of the political conditions, in 2024 the presidential election was held last February, because one of the presidential candidates wanted not to continue IKN, so this political turmoil has greatly affected the economic and geopolitical conditions in Indonesia.
2. There is indeed a lot of illegal mining around IKN, so with the presence of a central government, supervision of illegal mining will be stricter so that it can reduce illegal mining.

5. The central government moves from Jakarta to IKN, old government buildings can be built into parks and green open areas to reduce flooding, but this also depends on the next governor who will be elected next year.

Air tanah sangat acidic akibat kandungan peat dan batu bara. Penggunaan lahan harus dirancang dengan cermat. Agar terjaga sistem tangkapan hujan yang menjadi sumber air baku. Jika ini diabaikan maka dalam waktu 10 - 20 tahun ke depan akan terjadi bencana kekurangan air pada Nusantara serta kota-kota sekitarnya, seperti Balikpapan, Penajam Paser Utara dan kota Penajam Sebrang.
Problemnya separuh lebih populasi Indonesia yang hidup di pulau Jawa terbiasa dengan memanfaatkan air tanah. Dan rancangan ibukota Nusantara menurut saya sangat serampangan. Yang membuat rancangan terbiasa pada kehidupan di pulau Jawa. Pengerjaan Nusantara juga terlalu ambisius untuk segera terwujud, mengabaikan pertimbangan bagaimana menyediakan suplai air baku berkelanjutan untuk masa depan.
Fascinating! I see the problems, but tbh no better alternative comes to my mind. A new indonesian capial is required, that's beyond debate. Any other location, construction, funding, etc. will cause similar problems. There is no perfect solution. Overall Nusantara looks like a pretty good plan, probably except all the illegal mines.

To add information about the current situation of Jakarta sinking problems. There have been rumours about building Giant Sea Wall and that some experts have actually visit the Netherlands for it. I've yet to look it up or dive deeper so thats all I got for now
The plan designer by netherlands is already completed but the main wall was not continued because of the previous governor. So only parts of it implemented currently.

@@fsanders9070 I think its because they feel responsible, the city's problem is because dutch designed it that way. The most problematic is north jakarta which was the center of old town. If it sinks then plenty of old dutch heritage buildings disappear.

Nusantara as a captain would be a pretty ambitious project for Indonesia.
This is a smart way to develop all the archipelagos,boost tourism, allow people to migrate and avoid concentration on a central area.

Nusantara has a very low chance of becoming a ghost town, as long as it is built faithfully following the master plan.
Unlike some countries that have built new capitals prioritizing solely being government hubs, Nusantara is designed from the beginning to be a thriving city for everyone, not just civil servants.
There are also already 2 big cities around Nusantara, so Nusantara is not a standalone city in the middle of the forest.
