I work with seniors. I had a Dutch client who had spent all of WW2 as forced labor in German factories. When the war was over and he went home, he got conscription papers to be sent to fight in Indonesia. He said he didn't survive a war to go and do the same thing to someone else. So he joinsd the merchant marines and fled to Canada.

The sad reality is that, after decades of separate histories, West and East Papuans have become so different from each other that reunification as one nation is highly unlikely.
West Papuans have primarily been advocating for independence from Indonesia, rather than for reunification with East Papua (Papua New Guinea).
Going slightly off-topic, here’s my perspective on the Free Papua Movement (Organisasi Papua Merdeka, or OPM):
I don’t think Papua would be better off with full autonomy or complete independence. For now, they are likely better off as part of Indonesia. Papua currently lacks the infrastructure and economic capacity to sustain its own people effectively. Despite having abundant natural resources, Papua doesn’t have the capital or technical expertise to exploit these resources efficiently, rendering them largely untapped for the foreseeable future.
If the push for independence is driven by nationalism, I still believe it’s not the best approach. Independence might lead to greater challenges, such as economic instability, lack of governance, and vulnerability to external influence or exploitation by foreign powers.
Moreover, Indonesia, as a larger and more developed nation, provides significant financial and logistical support to Papua, even though many argue it could do more to address development and inequality in the region. Until Papua has stronger infrastructure, governance, and financial independence, breaking away might do more harm than good.
Lastly, this argument ignores the genuine grievances of Papuans today. Issues like systemic inequality, lack of representation, and exploitation of Papua’s natural resources by Indonesia are central to their calls for independence. Simply pointing to a tenuous historical link doesn’t address the present realities of marginalization and underdevelopment that Papuans face.
If Indonesia truly wants to integrate Papua, it must earn the trust and consent of its people through equitable development, respect for their rights, and genuine dialogue-not by relying on dubious historical claims.
And to those in the comments saying, “Oh, Papua is part of Indonesia and was once part of the Sultanate of Tidore long before the Dutch arrived,” here’s why I think that argument doesn’t really work.
First, the Sultanate of Tidore didn’t really control Papua in the way people think. The Papuans weren’t ruled directly by the Sultanate or part of its system. It was more of a loose relationship where some groups paid tribute, but most Papuans probably had no idea the Sultanate even claimed them. Using this as a reason for Papua being part of Indonesia today doesn’t make much sense because things back then were very different from how countries work now.
Second, Indonesia itself is a country that was shaped by colonial rule. The Dutch were the ones who brought all these islands together under one system. Papua, with its own unique cultures, languages, and people, was added to Indonesia after independence, not because of shared history but because of those colonial borders. If we’re using history as a reason, we could say Indonesia should still be ruled by the Dutch because they were the ones who unified it. Obviously, that’s a ridiculous argument, but it shows how weak the historical connection idea is.
By that same logic, we could argue that England should still rule parts of France, like Normandy and Aquitaine, because they controlled those areas hundreds of years ago. Of course, nobody would take that seriously today. Just because something happened a long time ago doesn’t mean it’s relevant to the way things should work now.
Lastly, this kind of thinking ignores the problems Papuans face today. They’re dealing with unfair treatment, lack of opportunities, and their resources being used by others without much benefit for them. Pointing to history doesn’t fix these problems or explain why Papua should stay part of Indonesia.
If Indonesia really wants to keep Papua, it needs to do more to help its people, treat them fairly, and listen to what they want-not just rely on arguments about history that don’t really hold up.

Ofc its different the word Papua has its origin in Indonesia. Its a native word due to historical ties with North Moluccan Sultanates. Papo Ua Gam Sio: the not united nine villages, under Tidore. Mistaken by westerners to mean slave, curly, not having father, etc
They have more ties than to the east named after a region in Africa by westerners. No one even in the separatist factions wanted unification with Papua New Guinea.
What you say is true for some but not other region in Western New Guinea. For some it was direct rule and explicit recognition of local ruler with title, for other it was tax collector directly sent from Tidore not through intermediaries. Other was entrusted to collect tax from other regions like the Raja Ampat rulers.

This really shows how diverse Papua Island is.
Also I am totally agree with you regarding Independence movement will lead to huge loss of Economy and Logistics. This happened in Indonesia after the Dutch got kicked out by Japan although Japan brutal occupation make it 100x worse, the resulting loss of governance and market made Indonesia the 3rd poorest in the world in the 60s. If this whole ww2 didn't happen i would argue Indonesia would be better off under the Dutch commonwealth.

  • @SonyThamrin

You did not mention why the US endorsed the New York Agreement in 1962. And the US asked the Netherlands to hand over West Papua to Indonesia.
In fact, the US obtained a gold and copper mining concession in the Grasberg Mountains in West Papua through the company Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. And on April 7, 1967, PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) was established and began mining gold and copper in Tembagapura, West Papua until today.
But in 2018, Indonesia struggled to buy 51.2% of PTFI shares. And in the future Indonesia will buy back PTFI shares up to 61%.
So the conclusion: all of this is about gold and copper mining in West Papua.

    3. no info about great east region of dutch east indies (1938 - 1945)
    3. in linggardjati agreement, west papua along with bali, lesser sunda islands, celebes, and moluccas is belong to great east under the control of united state of indonesia, but the Dutch did as they pleased to create great east without west papua, and split other territory within united state of indonesia and yeah don't forget about the threat to indonesia government if the government didn't accept the dutch revision of linggardjati agreement
    4. the creation of BFO to decrease the existence of republic of Indonesia / nationalist within United state of indonesia in Renville agreement
    5. one of the point of Roem-Van Roijen Agreement "The Dutch to refrain from establishing any more federal states in the territory of the future United States of Indonesia" (7 May 1949).
    6. in Round Table Conference, "the status of Western New Guinea would be determined through negotiations between the United States of Indonesia and the Netherlands within a year of the transfer of sovereignty." but the reality is, there is no cooperation from the dutch, instead they self-declare west papua in 1950. see the last 2 agreement is violated by the dutch
    7. yeah sukarno nationalize the industry, but why not explaining the cause much more detail ? also don't forget, even the dutch violated the last agreement, indonesia still pay its debt according to the agreement before the termination of diplomatic relations with the dutch

PNG politicians simply did the paperwork and the Australian government granted independence to a massive resource rich territory. No fighting no bad feelings and the relationship stays strong to this day. It was such a great transfer of power that it was like nothing happened at all.

    • @ambo9569
      @ambo9569 4 дня назад

You’re very naive. Australian “advisors” micromanage every single policy the PNG govt makes. They have their teeths sunk into every part of our govt/military. Our politicians may have autonomy to make bad decisions as long as it benefits Australia. But when the locals decide to rise against it, situations like the Bougainvillean War happen.

    • @Spidey_AU
      @Spidey_AU 3 дня назад

@@ambo9569 Australia doesn't benefit from png tho, Australia loses billions of revenue because of PNG, Australia's is PNG biggest development partner and aid. Png benefits from Australia. Only thing Australian govt is concerned about is Chinese influence in PNG. No one should trust a non democratic country (china). If China can take over PNG they would, Australia just temporarily controlled png as a External territory. well more like babysit it because of German colonialism.
It's PNG politicians not Australia's. Decisions, Australia never had interest in png. Png also doesn't need to listen to Australia.
Its your own backyard you need to be worried about. Btw it's called diplomacy not micromanage. Every country does it, and if Australia actually wanted png, png would become a state then png can create a referendum to become a independent country, which they will win.
      Your comment irks me...

I'm Indonesian, there were 3 places in Indonesia that always wanted to break apart.
The first was Aceh. They wanted to create an Islamic state, which opposes the constitution of Indonesia. This was mediated (if I'm not mistaken) by some Western countries, hence Aceh became a special province (which actually still violates partly the "unitary state" principle, as they have different constitution).
The second one is East Timor. This was, jowever, resolved by a referendum, where the absolute majority wanted independence. Hence, it has been resolved.
The last one is Papua. This one has not been resolved yet to this day. The government has been trying to make them happy, for instance, by giving them greater autonomy (e.g. their governor shall always be a Papuan). The government had also built many new infrastructures there. I think the best way to resolve this is via referendum. Elections in Indonesia are always democratic and fair, hence I believe this is the correct way (just like Scotland).
However, I don't think the Free Papua Movement would do any good. We learn about this in school in Indonesia. They kidnapped a pilot (from NZ), burned schools, destroyed infrastructures. I hope this movement can be peaceful. Aceh and East Timor used to be like this too, but we can resolve it peacefully.

Based on available data, on average, the people living in the Papua region controlled by Indonesia are more prosperous than those in Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea has a GDP per capita of approximately $3,518, while the Papua region in Indonesia, although specific data is not separated, is likely closer to Indonesia's national average of around $4,981, which is higher than Papua New Guinea's figure.
The poverty rate in Papua New Guinea is significantly high at around 39.9%. In comparison, the poverty rates in the Indonesian-controlled Papua region are generally lower, such as 17% in the Province of Papua and 32% in Papua Pegunungan. These figures reflect notable differences in economic conditions between the two regions.
Additionally, Papua New Guinea's Human Development Index (HDI) is 0.558, which is considered very low. While the HDI for Papua in Indonesia is not specifically separated, it shows an improving trend, with the government reporting significant progress in human development indicators for the region.
Papua New Guinea faces significant challenges in literacy, with an estimated adult literacy rate of below 15%. In comparison, the literacy rate in Papua Indonesia, although still lower than the national average, is generally higher, with reports indicating that approximately 36.1% of students in the region possess sufficient literacy skills. This suggests that, despite ongoing educational challenges in both regions, Papua Indonesia has a higher literacy rate than Papua New Guinea.
From an economic and human development perspective, the Papua region managed by Indonesia tends to be more prosperous on average compared to Papua New Guinea. However, it is important to note that there remains a significant disparity within the Papua region in Indonesia itself. Furthermore, prosperity is not solely measured by economic figures but also includes social, cultural, and political aspects. This analysis is derived from objective data and does not intend to favor any particular side.

The fact that you are so scared of people saying how wrong the Act of Free Choice was just shows morally bankrupt you are because you know it’s wrong. Out of a population of at least 750,000 in 1969, the Indonesian military handpicked 1,000 Papuans, isolated them from journalists and international observers, and threatened their families with violence and torture if they didn’t vote for integration with Indonesia. What a surprise they unanimously voted for integration, 1000 out of 750000. You call that democratic? You think it’s right because the UN secretary general approved it? He was always going to let Indonesia have it because he and US president Kennedy didn’t want Indonesia to side with the soviets, so they forced the Netherlands to give them Papua, pretend to give them an indenpendence referendum, and then just say no. It was rigged from the start, and the Indonesians played it smart to get Papua but it still dosent change the fact that the majority of Papuans want independence and Indonesia is forcibly colonising them for minerals from Grasberg and Papuans timber resources. If a majority of Papuans wanted to be part of Indonesia then the Papuan insurgency would have ended 50 years ago, but yet it has continued for over 50 years and has in fact become more intense in the last few years, and that can only happen if the general population still supports the rebels, publicly or secretly.

The Indonesian army conducted a fake referendum in 1969 calling it the "act of free choice Choosing 1000 West Papuans at Gun Point to vote for Indonesian rule. Americans, Australians, and Dutch citizens were present and witnessed it all. However there was little they could do as the USA and Indonesian government at that time had agreed to split the proceeds of the worlds largest gold and copper mine. Freeport Mine. America at that time was also trying to stop the spread of communism so it turned over a blind eye.
The United Nations has blood on its hands too as after decolonization , the indigenous people of a land get to decide their fate via their own country. The West Papuans never got that chance, indonesians are not culturally or historically indigenous to west papua. Since then there has been a low level insurgency but indonesia uses exessive military force to displace and kill west papuans - many of them now refugees in PNG.
Indonesia also actively blocks foreign media access to west papua, and their bots online try to get information blocked and removed. (This comment most likely will). West Papua’s independence is not just an emotional call for justice; it’s a practical solution to decades of marginalization, economic exploitation, and cultural suppression under Indonesian rule. Let’s break this down in clear terms.
Culturally, West Papua is a Melanesian land in every sense. The people there speak over 250 indigenous languages, practice traditions rooted in their deep connection to the land, and predominantly follow Christianity. Compare this to Indonesia’s Austronesian identity and Muslim-majority population, and the cultural divide is obvious. It’s no surprise that West Papuans feel alienated within a system that doesn’t reflect their heritage or values. Independence would allow them to revive and protect their cultural identity without interference.
Economically, let’s talk numbers. West Papua contributes billions of dollars annually to Indonesia’s GDP, mainly through its vast natural resources. The Grasberg mine, located in West Papua, is the largest gold mine and the second-largest copper mine in the world. Yet, despite this wealth, the province has one of the lowest GDPs per capita in Indonesia, at approximately $3,000 USD, compared to Indonesia's average of over $12,000 USD. The benefits of these resources flow outward to Jakarta and foreign corporations, leaving the locals impoverished. Independence would mean West Papuans could control their own wealth, reinvesting it into education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
On the topic of development, West Papua has some of the poorest living standards in Indonesia. The region has a population density of just 11 people per square kilometre (compared to Indonesia's national average of 151), which should ideally allow for more effective resource distribution. Yet, over 27% of the population lives below the poverty line, and access to education and healthcare is woefully inadequate. Literacy rates hover around 65% in some rural areas, far below Indonesia’s national average of 96%. An independent West Papua could focus on grassroots development tailored to its people, prioritizing education, healthcare, and infrastructure in ways Jakarta has failed to do.
Historically, the annexation of West Papua by Indonesia in 1969 was nothing short of a sham. The so-called "Act of Free Choice" involved only 1,026 handpicked individuals coerced into voting for integration under the watchful eyes of the Indonesian military. This violated the principle of self-determination enshrined in the United Nations Charter. Restoring independence would finally correct this historical injustice and respect the will of West Papuans, who have long fought for their right to self-rule.
Lastly, let’s not ignore the human cost. For decades, West Papua has been a site of conflict, with over 100,000 estimated deaths resulting from military operations, protests, and human rights abuses. Granting independence would put an end to the violence and give the people of West Papua a chance to govern themselves peacefully.
All in all, West Papua’s independence isn’t just about righting past wrongs-it’s about giving the region a fair chance to thrive. With its immense resource wealth, low population density, and resilient people, an independent West Papua has the potential to become a self-sustaining, prosperous nation. Let them have their shot.

Actually the people of Papua themselves want to be part of Indonesia, in 1928 Papua sent their representatives to makes an oath together with other islands to formed a united country named Indonesia. in 1945, after Indonesia declaring their independence, in that same year Papua formed a group called "Komite Indonesia Merdeka (Committee of Freedom Indonesia)" to celebrate the freedom of Indonesia and helps to arrange the government in Papua.
But the Dutch Government that still in Papua region can't accept it, and they decided to create "devide et impera" by creating a new organization in 1946 (that later become OPM) telling the Papuan people that they're different from the Indonesian people. This action has led to some minority Papuans became rebels till now.

Nobody is taking the Papuans seriously. Their lands and resources are viewed as something to be claimed to deny the rivals leverage over the other.
Before West Papua was "integrated" into Indonesia and before the arrival of the Dutch the natives lived contentedly in their lands.
Raising a middle class and stating that they would be better off under Indonesian or Western rule via Australia or America should eclipse the fact that the majority of the people may not want to be associated with either.

First, Mr Hatta, the first vice president of Indonesia, never said that Papuans should became a distict nation and West Papua must became independent country. The fact is he said that the Papuans should ask to determine their choices, either remain as part of the Dutch, became independent nations or being part of Indonesia.
Second, the intension of Indonesia goverment to "reclaim" West Papua in early 1960's is'nt based of oil discovery in West Papua. It mainly based that the Dutch is broke their promise to discuss and consult the question with Indonesia. More than 10 years since 1949 The Hague aggrement, the Dutch still keep this question "internally" althought international community pressure them to solving this question with the UN and Indonesian regime.

This is Indonesia's sovereign territory and Indonesia is not a colonial country.
If this is the case, why don't you ask other countries?Like Thailand, why not let go of the rebellious Pattani region even though it is culturally and ethnically different, namely Malay? You ask why the Philippines doesn't relinquish its sovereign territory in Mindanao, which is dominated by Moro Muslims who rebelled to the Philippines? Why doesn't India relinquish its sovereign territory in rebellious Kashmir to become an independent state? You ask Türkiye, why doesn't it just relinquish its sovereign territory, which is predominantly Kurdish, to become an independent state? You ask China why it doesn't just let go of the Uighur-majority region of Xinjiang, and make Tibet an independent country and Taiwan an independent country.?You ask Ukraine if it is willing to annex its sovereign territories in Crimea and Donetsk to Russia? You asked whether Serbia would recognize Kosovo's independence? If you want to ask about areas that are still colonies, just ask France, is its sovereign territory in the Pacific, namely New Colondonia, willing to become an independent country?

why would Australia take over land?
Indonesia occupied East Timor from 1975 even though they did not want to join Indonesia, in the 1990s they regained their freedom
Even after Indonesia became independent, there were still groups that did not want to join Indonesia, and yet no one listened to them, there were conflicts that continued until the early 2000s.
even in the 1960s, Indonesia had a war with Malaysia
on Borneo, because Indonesia wanted the entire island, but that failed
I have my respect for Indonesia, but no country should hide its dark side as if they have done nothing wrong towards their independence or their existence
Expressing criticism is part of history, everyone learns the right way, or they learn different sides that can lead to conflict

A voice from a American West Papuan.
In the quiet moments of reflection, I feel the weight of two worlds pressing upon my heart. As a Papuan American, my identity is a tapestry woven from the vibrant threads of West Papua's rich heritage and the diverse culture of my adopted homeland, America. Yet, amidst this blend, a profound sorrow lingers-the sorrow of a nation overlooked, forgotten, and perpetually caught in the shadows of greater powers.
Once, West Papua stood as a beacon under Dutch stewardship, a land of beauty and resilience. But the tides of history are relentless, and Indonesia's grasp tightened, erasing pieces of our identity and autonomy. The spirit of colonization, once distant, now feels uncomfortably familiar as we find ourselves entangled in the modern echoes of a Cold War 2.0. Between the towering influence of America and the rising might of China, West Papua becomes an unintended pawn, its destiny teetering on the whims of global titans.
How long, I wonder, will the divine gaze allow my people to endure this suffering? Our cries for recognition and justice often go unheard, buried beneath geopolitical agendas and economic interests. The land we cherish-its mountains, forests, and seas-bear silent witness to our struggle, yearning for liberation and respect.
Yet, amidst the despair, a resilient hope persists. Justice must prevail, not just for West Papua, but for all who are marginalized and silenced. It is a call to action that transcends borders, demanding that the world acknowledge our plight and stand in solidarity with our fight for self-determination and peace.
In the heart of America, where dreams are built and freedom is celebrated, I carry the spirit of West Papua-a reminder that true justice knows no boundaries. May our voices rise above the din of global politics, echoing the enduring hope that one day, our nation will no longer be snubbed or forgotten, but honored and free.

The reality is most Papuans today are happy to be a part of 🇮🇩. You won't see any unrest in the cities. Previous president Jokowi visited Papua dozens of times and significantly improved infrastructure there, building paved roads to connect isolated villages to the main cities. People forget that those separatists are 0.001% of the Papuan population, plus they control an incredibly miniscule portion of land, hiding deep in the forested mountains without any clear plan/progress. All the best for Papua no matter what happens. There have been some clear injustice in the past, but thankfully current politicians have opened their eyes and shined a light on it. ❤
