      Those are just a test to see how it goes. They will test other models as well. In any casevthey said that since they installed those there was a 20% rise in fare collection at this station.

      @brucewilkinson8599 7 месяцев назад +3

      @@AL5520 Thanks for this info. I suppose a 20% increase in fare collection is good, depending on where the measurements begin. Just from this video, however, it was clear that fare evasion is still quite possible and easy to accomplish by those not wanting to pay. I will be interested to see what the other gate entry devices are like.

    • @AL5520
      @AL5520 7 месяцев назад +5

      @@brucewilkinson8599 There is no 100% fare evasion system. We have similar fate gates for years in most stations, they are different as the plexiglass is higher (in both directions), has no frame and moves to the side (this model is among the others the MTA is considering) and in some places even plexiglass around to gates but there are passenger that bypass them but a good one will minimize the number. The MTA also looked at one that has an alarm when someone walks behind a paying passenger so they might tray it in the future.
      Where I live there are far less fare evasions but e few times someone tried to pass behind me, I don't let them but I'm not sure this will be a wise thing to do in NYC.

      @@AL5520 I agree - no system can eliminate someone who’s determined to evade paying. I’ve had people try to follow me through fare gates here on the Atlanta subway. A thief will break into a secure house, given the opportunity; But I still have an alarm in my home. Deterrence is the goal - just don’t see the present example in this video as the best solution - an alarm might be an additional help.

    They should use double gates. When entering, the first gate opens without having to tap the fare card, then you walk into a "buffer" area. In order to continue moving forward you need to tap your fare card while inside the buffer area and the second gate then opens. If you do not have a fare card or accidentally enter the buffer area, all you can do is move backwards and the first gate would open to let you out.

      You can't do that. People get robbed like that. You get trapped within those double gates, someone comes in keeps you trapped in and robs you.
      Its a horrifying idea. Its one of the main reasons why I don't use the spindle gate. A woman expired within the spindle gate as she got mugged and the criminal stabbed her
      while keeping her trapped within the spindle gate. She expired (sorry can't say the D-Word on RUclips), she was found 2 hours later.

    In Chhicago in the 70s there were gates that would close behind each passenger before a second pair of gates would open in front of that passenger. This allows only one person at a time to pass. It was in the Illinois Central commuter train stations.

    • @shamw39
      @shamw39 7 месяцев назад +1

      Exactly what I suggested to the person that's advising these gates for the MTA to implement; there are fundamental design principles lacking in the development of these subway station entry points.

    • @Spindablok
      @Spindablok 7 месяцев назад

      The problem with that is that people will time the closing and intentionally slow down to get injured. Then sue. And the same people fighting for the MTA then turn on the MTA because someone got hurt. NYC the city of con artists.

    More waste of money! Is fare evasion the real reason so many “accessible” stations remain unaccessible? What about the countless times they took money off my card because the stupid turnstile made me “swipe again” for no reason? BTW, I’ve opened the emergency gate for tourists because those full height turnstiles trapped someone! Geez, the list goes and and on. But yes MTA totally spend multi millions on guards and new gadgets.

    • @karenweaver8957
      @karenweaver8957 7 месяцев назад

      You are right about the the countless times, they take money off your card and still won't open the gate. I remember one time at Canal Street in Chinatown there were 20 of us in line with the same issue, we each only had $2.50 left on our cards, enough to get to our destinations, and we scanned the machine and it took our $2.50, but refused to open the turnstile. We all had to buy new cards and try again, so it cost me $5.00 to ride one way instead of $2.50. Do they take into account how many people end up paying double fares, because many times those stupid turnstiles won't open? I hate those stupid cards!! I rode the subway for years with tokens and never once had a problem!! I seldom go into NY any more, and avoid the subway as much as possible!! 8:24

      @@Andrew-Collet The MTA already has the numbers for fare evasion. They feel it's important enough to address it because they're losing a lot of revenue. That's why they're creating this. If they can trust people to do the right thing and pay their fare, then there is no need for gates or turnstyles.

  • @happytrails.
    @happytrails. 7 месяцев назад +5

    Interesting. They probably expected some fare evasion, it seemed like the focus was more on not having to hire security to guard the emergency gates. Curious to see how many more people evade with the new gates vs the old. And might still need to hire security guards too. Wonder why they chose those gates, which seem like they're gonna break easily, instead of the scary ones that move suddenly and fold into their housing with a loud noise, and snap closed quickly behind you, they seem like they're gonna cut your legs off if you mess with them. The cost of maintaining these new gates might be more than the cost of security + fare evasion of the old fare entry system.

    • @TwstedTV
      @TwstedTV 7 месяцев назад

      Security guards can't do anything. They have no law enforcement authority. And they are also unarmed. Its dangerous.
      What NYC needs to do is hire more police officers JUST for the transit system and stand near the gates.
      Problem is that this video showed 2 police officers on their phones and missed all the fare evasions happening right in front of them.
      Because they are 40 feet away from the fare gates, instead of standing inside the system near the gates and watching the gates.
      MTA is losing more fares because of this new system because groupings passing through as one fare.

    This is nice in practice but Piggybacking will replace turnstile jumping. I’d say the MTA should look into what BART is doing with their new faregates but they’re testing it out so it’ll be a while. Looks nice but fare evasion will still exist so this option will most likely not be in use systemwide.

    Those "platform gates" aka electronic turnstiles were made more for travelers with suitcases than anyone else since it's Jamaica/Archer and upstairs is the LIRR AND the air train. They have been at most London tube / train stations for years. What NYC transit should have is the zoning system where you have to swipe your Metrocard to get OUT of the station as well, and there needs to be more police at the train stations. This is ridiculous since there is always a heavy police presence at Jamaica/Archer.

    I live in Montreal and until 2021, I had never seen anyone jump turnstiles or go in with someone else. Obviously it was happening prior, but not as frequently. A couple months ago, I pushed the button to exit the gate and someone entered while the gate was still open. Now, when I use the gates to exit, if I see someone approaching to enter, I stand in front of them until they close. Not saying they weren't going to pay, but I don't know that. I pay for transit and they should, too. The STM is bleeding money. Nowadays, I see a lot of people get on the bus without paying and the drivers aren't allowed to stop them in case of violence (however I've seen drivers tell the passenger to get off).

    why would you have both exit and entry through the same gates? That's clearly not working at all and it's not efficient.

  • @Idontknowho.
    @Idontknowho. 6 месяцев назад

    The gates open up too slowly. They need to be faster and heavier. The MTA need to design the gates like the London Underground gates. But just to let you know people still tailgate. I don’t think you can stop people from dodging fairs but you can try and reduce it.

    Since contactless payments are going to be the future anyway, why not make the space between the two sides of any entry turnstile be a "readable" area, therefore the actual design and function of the swinging gate would be less critical because if they are carrying a contactless payment "method" (card or phone) it would still deduct fare even if the try to sneak through behind paying riders or custodial employees? I would guess that the majority of fare evaders still probably have a payment method on their person if if they occasionally evade. Sure it's a little creepy (big brother and all) but wouldn't that work for the most part and significantly reduce evasion?

    Having new subway platform gates isn't going to stop fare evasion because I seen the video that people are walking through these gates without paying their fare and it's costing the MTA money for fare evasion and the MTA needs to come up with a newer plan so it can make it harder for people to evade the fare that's all.

  • @Ray__E

    What they need is to actually put full gates up that are like 10 feet tall. Because I’m looking at this one and someone can easily hop around the other side. It’s not fair that people keep jumping the turn style without paying when I always pay. They definitely need to do something about it.

    I think it's easy to do Fare Evasion in Subway system because there are no strict rules. but if you do fare envasion in commuter rail ex. Lirr, MNRR, Metrolink you can fight with the conductor argue for not paying the fare police will be called and removed fare cheater from the train. I believe subway system need to be stricter with their policy.

    I could take advantage of this Opener gate system you see the gaps between machines Yeah IM JUMPING THOSE. YOU see that massive Gap in the handycap entry Yeah im slipping straight under it No top sirens. To the machine a dog on the leash is with its owner. To me Im laughing at this It wont even slow me down Maybe the cop who is too eager to get me He is trying to evade paying to enter while i slipped like a jetstream straight under that handicap stall. Another one if i dont want to bend down to go under i step diagonal in the handicap to the left hand side you see the opening Yeah Im taking it. Come on now let me see the doors I could tell you Weather or not its easier to just slip your small wrist into the slot and pull the door open Gotta garden shovel I can use that if its locked. Ohhhh yeah all casino room keys You can Manipulate the machine because of the magnetic strip on the back Overriding the system some extra stuff. Remember guys You already pay to keep it running. Now you must pay again for services On your Paid for service.
