- Car not starting? Do you have a bad ignition or bad ignition switch? In this video, I will demonstrate how to remove the ignition assembly and replace the lock cylinder, switch, and ignition. Also, I Demonstrate how to remove security bolts.

This video kicked ass for me, this and the fat red manual (Bentley) got me through, the dremel technique is perfect. When I did it I made wide gouges on one side only because my bolts were really soft so I wanted to be able to lay the chisel down at the bottom of the deep gouge. I was amazed at how the procedure went from really intimidating to a piece of cake! Those bolts were not going to chisel off like the manual said to without smashing the steering column to bits...
I did take the switch cluster off via the single 5mm bolt though, it was too easy not to do, plus I draped a bit of plastic over the cluster and the steering colum and wires and stuff before dremeling, saved me some cleanup and kept grindings out of the delicates :)

The screwdriver, of course must be Autobahn tool # 32412.32.1.98VAG43564. Use of unofficial master keys is prohibited.

Great job. Hopefully you replaced the switch too. The MK4’s were known to fry and leaving a nice burnt smell inside the cabin.

As shown, it is essential not to use knock-off release tools. OEM always. :} The lock housing I had was bad, and the cylinder was good.... so we transferred the lock and antenna to the new bolt housing. The place where you put the official VW tool was clear as mud in the video...... and that is the most important part... the tiny hole in the antenna cap is only an alignment indicator.... tool goes into the larger hole adjoining the face of the lock cylinder plug.... jiggle tool with one hand, jiggles the key in cylinder with other hand, retainer will drop inward and entire cylinder and antenna cap will slide out in your third hand. For those not familiar with MODERN VW, this is nothing like earlier ignition cylinders that all had a tight pressure clip.
My lock cylinder took a shit on me when i get a new one do i need the matching key and chip?

Im in the middle of the same job on my 2002 golf and just have a question that maybe you can help me with.. the shaft in the housing that turns the ignition switch is the point that broke on my car. before i started the job i tried starting my car with a screw driver At the ignition switch and it would crank but not turn over. I had the key in the ignition so the immobilizer shouldn’t have been a problem. I had, however, disconnected my battery for like 2 days prior to trying to start with the screw driver. Im thinking that because I had the battery disconnected the memory in my ecm was erased and now the immobilizer doesnt recognize my key, hence the car cranking but not turning over.. does this sound like a logical explanation? Or is there something obvious im missing? Thanks for any help and thanks again for the informative video!
/BCENZtube thanks for the quick reply.. yeah i didnt think disconnecting the battery would matter, but i couldn’t think of anything else. Im finally about to put the new cylinder housing in and Ill try checking the immobilizer connection while im at it. either way ill post here when i figure it out in case someone else has the same issue. What were the symptoms that lead you to believe this part was broken? I have a 2002 GTI 337 that won't crank. The key seems loose too. I took out the ignition switch and tested it with my multi meter and discovered it was the problem. That lock switch also broke from inside. I bought both from VW and installed them using new hex bolts (#8 1.25 20mm). I had to cut off one of the hex bolts with my dremel and file the ends to smooth it out. My car is back to normal now. Thank you so much for this video.
If you are able to get the key to turn enough to line up the dot in antenna cap and hole in cylinder face, release cylinder and test operation:
1. of the key cylinder
2. of the lock bolt housing
3. of the electyric switch, after removing fastener.
I do these as bench work, so not sure if ALL three items will all separate BEFORE removal from column.
This video helped me out a lot, as I'm not too mechanically inclined. While replacing the ignition switch, I found that the real problem was the cylinder itself, as the little piece of metal that turns the ignition switch was broken. I of course kept forgetting to go online and get the necessary part, so I've been driving around for a couple of weeks, using a screw driver to start the car. A couple of nights ago when I was about to leave work the immobilizer shut the car off. I noticed that the black wire had separated (probably from hanging there), while the green wire is still intact. My question is, how do I rewire the immobilizer? I've been searching for a video on how but cannot find one. It appears that you can open it, but I have no clue, and I don't want to do it the wrong way. I believe I may need extra wire so that I have enough slack when I put it back together properly. Any help you can offer would be fantastic! Thanks - Kurt!
So at 2:41, your thumb and index figure are pulling the immobilizer part out of the key tumbler unit. That's the part I'm talking about where the black wire is disconnected, but the green wire is still connected. Does that black box open or should I remove both wires, strip some sheath off of both, remove the wire from the box and then reconnect (or insert) the wires?
how do I take the sleeve arm off steering wheel without the rite clamp??it won't come off,trting to pull key barrel of to put new one on

Hey there, did you know which part was faulty ? Did you replace all parts just to be safe. The reason I'm asking is that if you have an immobilizer in the car , wont you have to have the key reprogrammed , isn't that a n unnecessary expense. I'm in the middle of replacing the switch only , hoping that's my problem and not the ignition lock.. Any thoughts .it's a 2002 vw cabrio
/BCENZtube .The key turns to the far right but doesn't return to the middle position. Also the engine doesn't turn over .So I was thinking it was just the ignition switch but now I'm thinking it could be the switch and the lock or just maybe the lock.
The little metal rod that turns the ignition switch broke off today, could I use an ignition from a Passat or does it have to be a Jetta?

How were you starting it with the screwdriver? Just the wiring plug unplugged? I lost my key in the snow while shoveling to my best guess I missed last week of work I need to work tomorrow! Can't lose this job. So just take some covers off the bottom of the steering column and unplugged it I'm guessing.
What was that white plastic piece you unplugged at 4 minutes and 15 seconds? I believe it was the inside of the old ignition you obtained from somewhere. Where do I get one?
@@thepope4970 There is no way to start the car without the key. You can't beat the immobilizer.
If you buy an ignition switch and cylinder. Would it still work with my current lock that I have on it? Or do I need a whole new assembly?

We have a 2005 GTI that is a donor car with keys with fobs. We just bought a 2003 GTI but it is just 1 key and no fobs to remote open it. Can I just take the ignition out of the 05 and put it in the 03 and not have to remove the whole switch assembly?
/BCENZtube so if I change the whole switch assembly out with the one from the 05 will it have the immobilizer linked to it or is that in the ECM?

Solid video bro, very informative and good detail. One question though, where did you plug the sending unit in for your oil pressure gauge? I cant seem to get mine to give a solid reading.
On the vr6 there are plugged holes on the oil filter housing.

Hi ...I've lost my keys so I went to breakers yard got a full barrel with the correct key.
I've changed the ignition switch ( the front part)...now my car starts but stop after a few seconds and saying immobilizer fault.....does the ignition switch have to match the full barrel ?
The point of the immobilizer is to match the key to the car so people can steal your car and then just swap the ignition. You need to get the key programmed to match your car or as you said the car will just shut off in 5 seconds.
You need the help of a locksmith to program your key to the computer
You seem to have a little more space than i do between the instrument cluster and the steering column.

Yes, If you disconnect the wheel with the battery on. Highly recommend disconnecting the battery before removing the wheel/airbag. You can easily clear the code if your light is on with a obd reader.

Make sure your getting the pin all the way in.you Might need to turn the key just a hair.
