VW key barrel removal, with the key stuck

- Watch Marc remove a key barrel on a VW golf. There's a Common fault with the ignition switch on these which causes the key to be stuck in the ignition on position. As the key can't move to the off position, the blade is stuck in the barrel. This video will show you how we remove the barrel. replacement of the ignition switch and mechanism will be shown in a separate video.

Yes this was a 'KEY' moment, for me, as i struggled for ages, scratching my head endlessly until the remaining hair had been dislodged quicker than the Barrel!! Thanks for Posting this AWESOME video, a great Help. 🙂
BIG thanks I was expecting to remove a few more parts Excellent video
Thank you very much very useful 🙂
Hello man..in my 2001 new beetle when I turn the ignition off the key pops out..I have to find that sweet spot and not turn it all the way in order to lock the steering wheel. Otherwise it pops out, steering wheel does not lock and all interior lights come up. Could it be a problem in the lock cylinder or in the main body of the locking mechanism?
I can’t get the barrel out my Vauxhall combo van the release pin won’t release the barrel any ideas thanks
This helped me dislodge my key from the “engaged” position in the barrel and get it out completely without having to take off the steering wheel etc. Live saver. Thanks bruv. Subscribed.
does this apply for the Audi Q7 key fob as well if the key is stuck in its ignition like your showing here how to remove ?
I cannot get to ignition on position. Something is stuck inside that I cannot remove. Can I get the barrel out in ignition off position any way pls?
You are brilliant & have saved me a lot of money 😊😊👍
Im driviing a Polo GIT dsg 2013 model,my key stuck ,i dnt know how to remove it ..can you help me
Hi I can’t seem to get the pin to release any other options?
My vw Passat, key is not entering into ignition switch and steering also locked,..can simeone help
Does the battery need to be on?
Can you do this while the car is on? My key is stuck in the on position and won’t turn off
Hi. How to put the lock to new barrel? Actually we shouldn't turn new barrel mechanism but middle, centre pin it's in another position as lock with key, which should be in ignition position to remove. Greetings. Tom
Thank you!
What happens if the ignition won't turn at all and can't get ignition lights on?. Thanks
Good job
thank you for keeping it clear and simple,You mentioned transponder, does that mean that if my battery is low on my keys it could be the reason why it won't turn?
Hi, no, if the transponder doesn't recognise the electronic signal from your key, the key will still turn but the immobilizer will kick in and prevent engine from starting. the key barrel is mechanical and set to the physical shape of your key blade. as you can see when we removed the transponder ring and the barrel itself, there was nothing there that should have prevented turning. this is because the main cause of the problem was further back and part of the steering lock mechanism had seized.
Hey mate, my ignition housing seems to be jammed as it won’t let me turn the car on. I’m currently looking for a Ignition barrel housing and my cars a MK5 2004 golf, Do the ignition barrel housings from later models (2005) or other older models fit it or does it have to be the original part for the actual car and model?
I'd ask one of the Golf Forums. Mine didn't go to run either. May also be parking cable adjustment
worked but when i install key again it locks again the car will turn on off fine just wont release key any ideas
Well done sir. Do you remove the airbag? I dont see you remove it but some people they do
Hello Marc, Brilliant video!! maybe I missed it or didn't understand the end of the video, was the part you had in your hand at the end that needs to be replaced? or the part still attached to steering column? Thanks in advance from across the pond, Jim
In the column
Oh I tried to do the method but the pin just broken inside I'm in trouble
Heya. I can't get the little clip to release. I put a paperclip in and it won't come out.
N the the keys stuck inside too doesn't wanna come out help please if possible
How to u fix the sized barrel then
Some in theory if you take the barrel out and leave in it. And leave the connector plugged in it you can start the car with a screwdriver. Just to get your self out of trouble
Aslong as you've got the key fob to disarm the immobiliser
How do you put it back in?
Just click it in
Thank you. My key wont go all the way to the ON position, so I cannot align the little dot and hole for the pin.. I did this for my spare part lock barrell and it was success, but now the lock in my car, is stuck and I cannot put it to the ON position, can I just force it perhaps with pliers ?
How did you fix it ?
@@micksingh4339 removing the steering wheel, removing the lock and changed the whole lock
Fml I'm in this same situation
Hi Marc, how do i take out the barrel if the ignition doesn't go to ON position?
I have the same problem, how did you resolve that situation? I am wondering if I have to remove the steering wheel etc so I can change the whole lock assembly
Anyone got an answer?
@@jorisvb I used a hammer to tap & quick dry lub
Pull down the steering adjusting handle. Rock the steering wheel hard in all possible directions while gently trying to turn the key on. It works in most cases.
what if the key dont want to turn to on position to free the lock?
Did yoy manage to find out what to do ?
FYI
Nice work McGyver
My key won’t turn at all so i can’t line up the holes. what should i do?
If it is siezed solid then unfortunately you will have to get the vehicle recovered to a workshop.
Is the car you have demonstrated on a Golf Mk5?
Yes it is. Although this set up appears on a few different models
@@MTMMotorServices Re Mk 5 Golf - After this I ended up drilling up into the Aluminium Key barrel housing to remove the Steering Lock and then reassembling the mechanism. Much easier than trying to remove the dead bolts. If it's of use see here - ruclips.net/video/R4npTUg5DOg/видео.html All the best! Seán ps Thanks very much for your clear video.
My key is stuck in the off position and comes out just doesn't turn. How do I get this out if it has to be in the on position to allign?
Exactly that’s why I’m confused it won’t let it turn on what do I do
@@Modern-Gladiator I ended up getting it to turn. I took the whole assembled out and smaked it with a hammer a bunch while jiggling the key and it ended up turning.
My steering wheel is seized lock in my 06 A3, so that means I have to remove my steering wheel..
Can I just add to the "ON" position. The paperclip hole and dot on the ignition barrel need to line up to release.
The plastic cover prevents the cylinder from releasing fully
@@h.ar.2937 keep wiggling, it eventually comes out
@@tyjohnson7428 It did eventually! Thanks
how do you get it back in lol ?
Old comment but watched this video in 2024, for the fellows after me.
You will need that paper clip again. Once you are able to remove the piece from the steering wheel, like he showed in this videe; you are going to want to pay attention to where the paper clip is. It is old down the catch that prevents it from getting pulled straight out from the steering column.
If you already have taken the paper clip out, stick the paper clip back into the hole that was used to take the barrel out. You will have to hold the catch with your finger, to allow the hole for the paper clip to line up.
Once the catch is held in place, pay attention to the orientation of the barrel and the receiving end in the steering wheel. On the car that I was working on, I had to have them in the "ON" position.
On the receiving end, putting it into the "ON" position allowed a piece to open up that will prevent the barrel from sliding in.
I did that, I checked position with screwdriver and now my wheel is locked, position wont go anywhere, how to unlock wheel now?
If you wiggle the steering wheel and turn the barrel it should release the lock. If its still not playing ball then the issue could be the unit itself. You'll have to remove the steering wheel to strip it down.
@@MTMMotorServices Oh god, I mean.. I go to position 1 or even 0 and my steering wheel locked. So stupid mistake, now I know. So dissasembly unit is way to go? should I be afraid of airbag? (battery off). I go into it because of ignition key. I turned it off from car and its still running. Thanks for reply!
@@michalknapek5697 if the battery is off, after an hour it should be safe to work on. But we always recomend de activating the Airbag system with a diagnostic machine. Unfortunately to get at that unit you'll have to remove the steering wheel and disassemble the the the airbag wiring (clock spring). There are videos on youtube detailing this procedure. We at MTM will work to see if we can get a video up on this subject soon. All the best with your repair. Let us know how you get on :)
@@MTMMotorServices a quicker way to de-energize the electrical system for handling SRS stuff is to take the ground off the battery then put a small shorting jumper across the cable ends (NOT the battery). just make sure that ground isn't anywhere near the battery post if it touches your jumper will vaporize.
If you disconnect your battery for any reason make sure you have your radio pin number or you radio won't work once you reconnect your battery.
Would this be the same for 2005 audi a3 ?
there can be some variants, but if you can see the hole on the key barrel then it should be either the same or similar atleast. i cant say for sure without looking at one myself.
@@MTMMotorServices
It worked !! same procedure as the video! thanks heaps!
My key won't turn to on position my trouble can't start car
So how do I get paper clip in position
Yes , that is the easy way , but if the key does not turn anymore you have to get all of .
Yes, often the fault actually lays further back and it's the column itself that needs replacing. Not the barrel
@@MTMMotorServices yes , i have managed yesterday to get the cilinder out , but the housing you have to destroy , otherwise you have to buy 2 parts together , the lock itself kosts here in NL , about 270 euros so that you can use the original key.
But , it is a nice video on youtube , people can save money.
@@Holydiver7019 you shouldn't have to destroy it, there are security bolts which are there so safety purposes. But there are ways and means to remove them. As the removal of these bolts are for safety reasons, I haven't covered it on my chanel. But there are videos on RUclips on how to remove them
Hi, i own volkswagen jetta se 2009, and same thing happened.
When I turn on engine, i felt stuck.
it was handle lock, so I wiggle them and put the key in.
After I arrived at my place, i tried to turn off but it still remained on ACC, which keep my engine from turning off.
I so upset by this situations. Tried every steering lock solving things on RUclips but doesn't worked.
Would it help if I follow your directions?
If you remove the barrel, be sure to not Move the internals inside the steering column. This removal and re fitting can sometimes fix your problem but likely the problem is part of the column itself. If you don't feel confident and competent I would always recomend you take the car to a professional
Thank you for super fast reply.
But still I can turn on my engine, with a stucked key.
Like this.
I kill my engine by geting off engine fuse, and then disconnects battery line with.
When I wanna drive, I do the same thing above inversely. And getting a car and turn on my engine.
Does it happen with broken steering column..?
I really have no budget for fixing it.
So..... Hope it would not be that much cost..
@@youngkim6740 potentialy the issue is deeper into the column and normaly requires replacement. This requires removal of VW security bolts and re calibration of steering angle with a diagnostic tool as well as de activating the airbag system. Although just by removing and re fitting may solve your problem, I'm just making you aware that if it doesn't, then it is an indication that the ignition switch inside the column unit is at fault. It's labour intensive and also a common problem on VW's. You should be abke to find a video online for that, but again. Due to the nature of the job, I'd recomend a professional
@@MTMMotorServices man I fixed it at 2:30 AM just before i write this comments..
You dude you're like a god. I penetrated several time the hole in ignition lock as your way on video, it works.
I think this vehicle is kind of old one which is not enough to used to steering lock, so that might causes some jamming.
But now it works so smoothly... I'm so thankful with that video. You are a such god for me! Thank you so muchhhhhhh dude!!!!
What can I do if I am unable to turn the key to the on position? I can only turn it slightly to unlock the steering wheel but can’t rotate the key or ignition to the on position, which doesn’t allow me to line up the small holes.
Did you ever figure out this issue? I currently have the same problem
@@tdh513 No, I did not. It was a car that was for sale. I chose to not purchase.
@@tdh513 were you able to fix it? i have the same problem
I have the same problem haven't seen a solution this. Anynody??
Old comment but might be worth it for future reference.
I have had a problem similar with VWs. The trick was turning the steering wheel slightly one way or the other. Just enough to provide some tention, usually that would be enough to release the key into the one position.
This would be after the steering wheel got unlocked from the key.
so its not just a paper clip, you need a key also
This video saved me $700-$1200. I also used graphite too. Thanks bruv.
Carpentry hammer? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Good but only half the job
You didn't show the fix! lol
He said at the end that the mechanism the key rotates in is the problem, seizes up
Can I just start my car with a screwdriver? This seems more expensive than my car is worth
No, as you'd still need the immobiliser to de activate with the key fob.
@@MTMMotorServices Thanks !

Literally didn't help me at all sadly, need to be more detailed for the people who have no idea how to do what you are doing, we need to see some struggle or we won't learn how to face any problems we come across
