  • Just an informal review of my Vortex Race 3 RGB Mechanical with Cherry MX Browns. If you can find one used for cheap I'd say it's good then, but if you're buying a prebuilt mechanical new personally I think there are just better options at this point in time (Keychron Q1, Q2, or Q3 or Ducky One 3 for example). If there's anything I forgot to mention in the video I'll toss it down in the comments. Thanks,

Something I forgot to mention -- like most mechanicals out there this keyboard does exhibit noticeable key wobble (where the keycaps can shift a bit from side to side if you press on them then wobble them). It's not noticeable to me during typing, but it's definitely there (as it is on probably most switches/boards sadly). These days there are some newer switches that seem to have a bit less key wobble such as the recent Gateron G Pro switches (which are also nicely factory lubed) or box switches which are on a rail (I love me some box switches).
Going back to the bad sound profile out of the box, a lot of prebuilt mechanical keyboards these days will have a layer of foam inside to dampen the case ping when typing. This keyboard when I opened it up for the tape mod didn’t have any foam in it at all - the board basically just goes right on top of the metal and it sounds pretty bad to me stock. Even with the tape mod which helped, I still don’t think this is an especially good sounding board, but I really dig this type of condensed 75% layout.
Personally I plan on maybe opening it up again to try out adding in a layer of PE Foam to see how that changes the sound profile as I’m still just not totally happy with it (especially that dang rattley space bar). I know in the video I threw out a hundred bucks as a rough number, but thinking on it further with all the other options out there now I probably wouldn’t buy this used for more than 80 maybe 90 bucks and even then I’d want to do the PE Foam mod + Tape mod since the board sounds so dang awful to me stock. Anyhow, thanks, have a good one.

I have two of these. A cherry red version (micro usb) and a cherry blue version (usb c). Best keyboards hands down.

press Pn+5 and then you can again press Pn+1/2/3 to make red/green/blue lighter/darker to get whatever color you like... keep pressing Pn+5 to toggle through different light modes and press Pn+4 to turn everything off again.

Keychron Q1 (Version 2, they've released an updated model) with Rotary Knob -- it's a big improvement over this board. Checks all the boxes I care about, metal base, foam/steel plate dampening inside the chassy, PBT keycaps that feel pretty nice (though the kerning is a bit wonky) with the stock keycaps, gasket mount (though there's not really any travel when typing on the V2 sadly), modern factory lubed Gateron switches (G Pro line), Rotary Knob, good cut off layouts like the Q1, Q2, and Q3. Good value imo even with shipping not being included in the base price. Also it's got USB-C and comes with a USB traditional adapter if that's your thing. It's also switch hotswappable so I personally ordered two different sets of the G Pro switches (Blues and Browns).

@@BlindBison I don't really know if it is a good comparison because the race 3 is quite low profile while the Q1 is really thick. The keychron k3 would be a better comparison. There is a k3 super-slim and a pro version. From the sound-tests I saw online the super-slim sounds bad while the pro sounds good but not as good as the race 3 (ruclips.net/video/i_kVAxA7-SU/видео.html). Maybe quality control is not so good which would explain yours sounding badly. So I don't really think there is an overall superior option if you want more of a low-profile board.

@@_______________00 Thanks for explaining that, that's helpful to know. Will give that linked video a watch. Cheers
