"How The Hell Can A Person Go To Work In The Mornin, Come Home In The Evenin and have Nothin To Say" maybe the finest words ever written. RIP John Prine
I would say the part that hits me is ain't much to look at just a free rambling man this whole song is sweet sound to the soul
Absolutely riveting performance..
I am crying and I agree
“ I Ain’t done nothin since I woke up today” …
❤
"I love you Bonnie"
"I love you John"
RIP John Prine, one of the most underrated singer song writers of my generation.
Not on Canada's east coast he's up there with Dylan & neil.young RIP JOHN.
I miss Steve more. He spread sunshine. John is rather somber
It's a damned shame COVID got John Prine, along with so many others.
R.I.P. cowboy.
Every single time I listen to this I end up crying. I love when John says "I love you Bonnie" at the end. They were such good buddies for decades.
Same, I cry every single time.
Every damn time
Man her voice is like a fine wine. Every year adds something special and unique to it.
Saw her last night in Boise. Amazing voice and range.
John was a big part of my life since 71' YOU REST EASY JOHN PRIME!
All I ever wanted to be in this life was Bonnie Raitt
Love the way Bonnie pulls back, vocally, when John is singing. She has such a strong, clear voice that could easily overshadow his .... but the graceful and respectful person she is, kept it soft. How beautiful, both of these people. Love her, and miss him terribly.
She harmonizes so beautifully. What a talent.
It's his fuckin song guey
It's his fuckin song guey
Back in 1971 I went to see and hear John Prine in a small club on Congress Ave, Austin, Texas. John did several songs before saying of someone he wants us to see, "Welcome Bonnie Raitt". The first song they sang together that evening was "Angle From Montgomery"
Thank You John and Bonnie …..a treasured duet …now and forever !!!
John was only 24 when he wrote this song, amazing. Wonderful how sensitively Bonnie balances her voice when John leads. Look up and listen to his original version of this tune, then find these two singing it together when they were young. Beautiful, thank you both, John Prine and Bonnie Raitt.
This fact blows my mind every time I see it! 24? Gtfo… from a woman’s perspective? Beyond all of us all the time. Rest up, John.
John was certainly a child that grew old, gracefully and gratefully. He hung around long enough to teach a generation, even two to sing songs of the soul. As loved as he was, and still is, he conveyed a spirit of loneliness so deep you've got nothing to say. But John had plenty to say and these things will be said for generations to come.
That's exactly why I love him. He captures the feeling of loneliness and loss just profoundly. I feel like Patty Griffin has continued that tradition with an eerily similar energy and feel. They know my internal landscape, both of them.
@@IlaughedIcried so true, so true...so achingly true.
Yeah, I can appreciate that.
Well, said. The other artist who was like him and before him was Hank Williams, Sr. He even exceeded him in how he sadly lived his life.
Tony, you expressed and articulated that so well.
Congratulations to Bonnie Raitt on her win of the 2023 Grammys .
how the hell can a man wake up in the morning write such great songs do the same in the evening and do the same the very next day. top man john prine
Tears in my eyes, we miss you John.
Rest In Peace John Prine. You left a trail of stars in your wake.
That's not supposed to happen. God trump, pope anybody but John Prime. Hell no nooo
So well said
Such a sin. Brillant songwriter. I have loved John's music since the early 70's. Met him and Bonnie Raitt one summer in the 70's at the Phila Folk Festival. One of my more memorable experiences.
❤️
Yes Kathleen-you are kind!
Listening while in hospital with Covid. Thank you John Prine! RIP
Ironic. Feel better, and enjoy the music. Cheers
Just give me something I can hold on to to believe in this living is just a hard way to go
There's everything to love about this song and this performance. A perfect example of the best of Americana. But two things impressed me most. One was how unabashedly John sings the female gender-specific lyrics without so much as batting an eye. The other is the harmony Bonnie chooses to sing with John. So respectful and complimentary. Years of experience singing this classic gives her the ability to do so. Simply wonderful!
Her respect and ability to sing complimentary to him like that was so amazing. Agreed!
Oh yes- also agree so much!! RIP John, you were always a giant slice of wonderful American humor in music! Miss you SO MUCH - still love you too, Bonnie, as ever! ❤
I may be wrong, but I thought John basically gave this song to Bonnie as a gift, at any rate it doesn't matter great harmony, and Bonnie made it work with him, with respect. One of my favorites!
I have never seen Bonnie Raitt do the same arrangement twice on this song (at least on YT). I like how she went understated doing the lower harmony, which gave more prominence to John Prine's voice. The respect they have for each other is so evident, and the talent they give us is unmatched!
She is a killer open tuning slide guitarist and I think one of the best most versatile female interpretive singers ever. No one has that timbre. No one has as rich a vibrato. She does glissando as well ad Streisand
@@robertlee8042 And doesn't the news of John Prine's death just suck? I'm getting really pissed at this virus. Thank God for John Prine. The music world lost one of the deepest souls in the universe.
So True, RIP John ..
She is a class act.
And it seemed like she made the adjustment on the fly when they got to the chorus the second time around! That’s awesome musicianship and respect for old John. Rest In Peace, old man. See you there, soon.
I hate country music but this song just hits man. It's glorious.
"I love you, Bonnie" tears me up when she answers. Everytime.
E V E R Y time. I don't really believe/think this, 'cuz I know human beings are individuals, but part of me feels that if this doesn't make you cry, or at least a bit 'emotional,' you're either 1) Too young to know better, or 2) Some kinda cyborg. At this level, it ain't even about music anymore. It's meta. Prine & Raitt forever...
I might be old, but I saw most of the best bands!
John ain't never coming back but he never left
If this doesn't put a lump in your throat...you'd better check your pulse. RIP John. What a legacy you have left - both personally and musically. One of the greatest singer/songwriters of a generation. That little, impish grin that you would share with other artists and your audience, that was so full of respect and admiration and an awesome sense of humour. Condolences to Fiona and your boys. "Well it took me years to get those Souvenirs, and I don't know how they slipped away from me." 🎶❤️✌️❤️🎶🇨🇦
John Prine was a blessing. His music and soul stay with me. Gratitude.
Prine true legend bless up🙏❤️‼️
We were lucky to live during the best music ever produced. 65- 74'
U got that right awesome song
❤
Two treasures. I’m a huge fan of both. This songs been in my set list for decades, never gets old! Miss you, John. You made my life so much better.
Among my most favorite lyrics of all time: "there's flies in the kitchen, I can hear em a buzzin." I think of them every summer. RIP, dear Mr. Prine. 🙏🏻
Pray for John. He is an American treasure.
A-men. Have been doing so since I heard the news.
🙏🙏🙏🙏🏿🙏🏾🙏🏽
Heard he’s now in Stable condition...
He will make it! The world needs him. We love you so much john!
He is in all truth and likelihood a world treasure.transcending even the likes of Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash.I first saw John in 1969.He absolutely transformed my outlook on every thing in life.He has inspired me to be better for all mankind and I think of him everyday especially now.Indeed I pray for him.
John Prine is one of those very special artists whose fame and popularity will continue to grow through the eons.
Bonnie and John . . . . two legends who never forgot where they came from
no pretense, no show off just great music...rest in peace John Prine
Can't wait to see her this coming summer. John Prine was a class act. Spreading love through music.
"Don't bury me down in the cold cold ground..." Don't worry John, you are always buried in our hearts, where it's always warm.
Love how you said this. My sentiments exactly.
nicely put...
What a lovely thing to say. Don't know you but I like you.
Mann some drunken gentleman told me to listen to this and I had to open a beer after hearing it. Great vibes
Levon Helm summed up the perfect description of the essence of music when he said ' music is not a fad , or a style , you can make music do lots of things 'cos music don't care ! '
This was angels protecting angels and outlaw dreamers.
Just four months ago. This is magical. Hard to imagine he is gone. God bless, John. You left us your music and it is so sweet.
His music may be sweet, but it is also smart.
Uh. Gone? Ain't "gone".
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever made I watched Bonnie perform it many times and never get tired of hearing it Thank you 🙏
I was so lucky to see them in concert together once a couple of decades ago. So special.
Two American treasures. It should be illegal for that much talent to be on stage together. 🙂
Take the time to listen to the lyrics of any john prine song. Pure genius
I don't have the words to thank you, Brother. Thanks for walking me home.
im a fan of bonnie.and heard her talk of john prine many times im so glad she did started to listen to john and cant get enough of his music . thanks bonnie and thanks to jhon prine for some wonderful songs.
He's been one of my best friends since I was 17. I'm 65 now. He has comforted me for 47 years. Feel like I lost my brother. I love you, pal.
I'm crying like a baby. Just sayin good by to too many of these type people. If God made John Prime to write this song, He made Bonnie to sing it. Thank God for both of them!!! Gods speed John. Thank you Miss. Bonnie.
How dare anyone thumb down this....you wouldn't know talent if it was sitting on your face...R.I.P. John...angel on earth, now in heaven...
The reverance that Bonnie holds for John is in such evidence here !
They met in rehab and toured together I had the pleasure of seeing them in Charlotte, NC at Valentine's Poladium.
@@robertharrison8286 Two legends, one gig. Lucky you Robert!
every time I listen to this the water flows from my eyes
I’ve seen both of MY favourite musicians and I swear, even on my death bed, they’ll be two of my favourite memories. My Mama used to play Bonnie’s “Love Has No Pride” every Sunday…just non stop brilliant music on her stereo; John Prine, Tim Buckley, Linda Ronstadt, Melissa Manchester, Fleetwood Mac, Phoebe Snow…the 70s were THEE BEST.
RIP John Prine - John Prine was living proof that nice guys do sometimes exist in the world. He was musician, but he was also a great poet.
Aw man, so sweet thank you both, he's always with me bonny like you, happy paddy's day ☘️🎶🎼🎶💚♥️ Billy x
I come back and watch this at least every couple months. Just some magic being being made by two kindred souls.
Such an amazing example of two incredible people complimenting each other with such respect for their talents. A pure joy to behold.
My wife and I sang this song at my 50th birthday - it was part of a personal fantasy of mine - we played his first record nearly in its entirety. Prine wrote this song, which, like many of his songs, features vivid lyricism, but Bonnie Raitt really made it her own, and when they sing it together it is really special. As I turned 50, I really felt the line .."the years they just flow by like a broken down dam." Thanks John Prine and Bonnie Raitt - you are two of the really good ones.
Hugs
I have to say I Love how this Angel from Burbank looks at the man behind this Beautiful Masterpiece. I swear she wants to cry at what Father Time has taken from him. You are a Beautiful Soul Bonnie Raitt !!!
John Prine. Bonnie Rait. Together. At the Ryman. Doesn't get much better than this.
The BEST of America. Absolutely proud to share the planet with these people. ❤
Smoke one if you got one , we lost a giant with a true sense of humor and an amazing talent.
We lost an icon of a songwriter ,RIP John gone but never forgotten
Amazing. Rest in Peace John. You showed the world your music
Didn't he though
I saw John at the Golden Bear, a small venue in Huntington Beach, CA in the early 80's. John's manner was so warm it felt more like we, the audience, were hanging out in John's living room. When he passed away - a couple of years ago - it felt like losing a friend.
Her father John was a great musical performer. He had an operatic voice and was the star of the musical "Oklahoma"
Bonnie at 70 has not lost any of the richness in her voice. John seems like he’s finally tired. RIP
Just loved him n such beautiful music he created...always a story!
John is with the Angels now. May he Rest In Peace. He was truly one of the greats. Bob Dylan doesn’t look up to many people but he looked up to John.
I hope so
Kind words from the great Bob Dylan:
"Prine's stuff is pure Proustian existentialism. Midwestern mindtrips to the nth degree. And he writes beautiful songs. I remember when Kris Kristofferson first brought him on the scene. All that stuff about Sam Stone the soldier junky daddy and Donald and Lydia, where people make love from ten miles away. Nobody but Prine could write like that. If I had to pick one song of his, it might be Lake Marie. I don't remember what album that's on," Dylan told MTV producer Bill Flanagan.
RIP JP - To believe in this living, is just a hard way to go... =(
Bonnie's gotta be hurtin
Truth.
I could watch this 100 times in a row without getting tired of it.
Rest easy to the best song writer to ever lift up a pen and pick a guitar....
My goal was always to go listen to John live. Never made it. I can truthfully say that on half a dozen occasions as someone who suffers from suicidal depression I got in the car fully intending to kill myself and then I turned on John's music and got so interested in listening to it and singing along with him and his songs which touched my soul, and his songs brought me back from the brink. I just wish I could have done the same for him. Vanderbilt saved me from AMML and I thought they would save John from Covid as well but it wasn't meant to be. I owe him a great debt. What's left of my life. Bonnie Raitt said that he was the closest thing we had to Mark Twain living today (a year before he died) and now I know that the representative of 60,000 folks on the Hillbilly Highway in Chicago produced a great writer, not of books, but of stories set to music. RIP John.
Hey Professor, I just saw your comment apparently from a year ago. Are you still with us? I'm even more disappointed to see not a single person was compelled to reach out than I am with the GOP. Maybe not my business pard but I'd appreciate if you'd let me know. Thanks
Such an amazing song!! But every song he wrote was my favorite. 💔
I believe that's the best recording I've ever heard this song done. Previously I preferred his solo version from his first album, but the duet really worked this time. God do I miss him!
RIP John, keep an eye on us.
I'm old now. This is beautiful.
Does not get any better than this
Absolutely nothing better than these two singing this song. Nothing. Peace, John. You done good.
I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that he’s no longer with us.
John Prine was something special in this world.
Can't imagine how Bonnie feels right now, what a loss.
His wife problebly misses him more
Does it seem as if Bonnie Raitt knew it was the last time they would sing this together? May his memory be for a blessing
The passing of a legend. Rest In Peace, John Prine.
My favourite performance of this song. Bonnie's 'from montgomery' at 0.51-0.54 makes me almost burst into tears every time i watch this. The way she sings that line on this particular performance, you can almost hear the ghosts of all the times she has sang this over the decades, you can almost feel the memory of it yourself, mixed with a sense of loss and nostaliga. Stunning.
This song is like a tattoo: it stays with you forever. Thanks, Mr. Prine.
Not quite. John's songs will never embarrass you as you age.
@@4orrcountry You've got that right!
On June 22, 2020 there are 74 lost souls who didn't like this classic John Prine classic.
Im so sorry to hear that
Rest in Peace, John Prine. I'm glad Bonnie Raitt got to acknowledge you and your brilliance at the 2020 Grammy Awards.
My god I love this song. Bonnie is fantastic, and Prine well he is Prine, what else can you say.
Hello in there !
RIP John
He was that polite singing mailman. One of the good guys. He'd already endured so much pain, even had a chunk removed from his neck. No one deserves to die from coronavirus, but damn it all, did we have to lose John? Angel From Montgomery has been a song I've always loved, but now it's become some kind of anthem and reminder of these Covid-19 days. RIP John Prine, the world is a little less sunny without you. Bonnie, you're a treasure. .
I guess John really was made an angel. He will be missed.
NOOOOOOO!! The man who wrote songs that touched my deepest soul has passed.........And this, one of the purest most special songs ever written (imo), touches me still. RIP to one of the great American songwriters - John Prine.
We had the opportunity, no gift, to see/hear Bonnie Raitt and Mavis staple last night. When Bonnie did this song even she was moved to tears. What a masterful gift.
Mavis Staples was something special in this world, too.
R.I.P. John Prine - The memory and the love lives forever. Into the universe it will fly..and be a wave into the ocean of forever.
Sorry for the loss of John Prine...he will live on in his music.
Priceless.
Bonnie did this song of John's so beautifully. I can't think of a better tribute than to listen to this all night long, the day that John died.
Real music from the heart and soul.
Rip buddy. Sorry can’t see too well through my tears.
no shame in that....me too
Yep, don't think I can ever hear this song again without the waterworks
Bonnie. Raitt, Jackson Brown ,and John Prine were at the same festival Jackson Brown also got this virus John Prine got this virus which took him too soon his passing breaks my heart im a life long fan. Rest in Pease Mr Prine
I love this song. Sang it with fans in the parking lot outside Toronto music hall. He will be missed.
Rest in Peace, John. Heaven just got a little brighter today. We will always play your music, hear your voice and your words. You will always be with us.
Thanks for sharing your life with us John. R.I.P.
The I LOVE YOUS at the end🎉🎉🎉
Just heard the sad news of your passing. This damn COVID-19 thing has stolen you from us.
But you're never going to be forgotten because of all the fabulous music you've blessed us with.
Doesn't mean my heart isn't hurting tonight. Never been any good with death but I've had more than my fair share of it in my lifetime.
So tonight I'm taking solace in your songs, especially this one.
My heart goes out to your wife Fiona. 💝🙏🌹
Rest in Peace Brother John.
