Having cut my teeth on VW's, we had 4 and an engine out about every weekend. Calling all the issues out before you all figured them out was nostalgic. I could still probably reassemble from pure memory. When they are tuned and running well, I found them to be reliable and tanky. Easy to keep running. Even had on the fuel pump went out on with a 30 mile commute to school and back. Climbed hills with a full carb, coasted down hills with motor off, popped the clutch at the bottom and ran up the next hill till the carb ran out. Refilled, rinse and repeat until I got a new pump in. Fond memories.
I would pay 700 for this all day long. I love those 70s sand rails. I remember seeing these when i was a little kid. I always thought they were super cool.
Do you have any knowledge on 305s. I'm 18 just inherited a 1985 k5 Chevrolet blazer i got it running perfectly I'm curious on how to replace the entire distributor system
Nice rail! I have that same frame - it's a late 70s / early 80s Chenowth short-back sand rail. They are super fun to play around on and fairly easy to work on once you get the hang of VWs. Great vid!
Awesome deal! When I was 17, I drove a 1967 Beetle as my daily. You often make pals with other weirdos that drive Vee-Dubs and one I met had a short wheelbase, 2-seater sandrail. It was clean as a whistle and powered with a stock 1,600cc engine. Fun for days, folks. Even with the bone-stock powerplant, it was fast and I wanted it. He offered to trade for my Type-1, but alas it was not to be. Mom wasn't havin' it. I always wanted to score one since, but it still ain't happened. Maybe someday, huh?
There's a VW sand rail on the offer and up site for sale. but it's a four seater. I believe it has VW square back engine in it. because the fan is down in front of the engine instead of up on top of the engine. I live in Washington State also. those paddle tires don't work well for pull starting. due to lack of traction on the wet ground.
I'm glad my first car was a 1967 VW bug, otherwise I might not have learned persistence or that German engineering was so wonky. I fell in love with the wonkiness and then got a '64 baja, a '68 transporter, and my last VW was a '81 diesel rabbit pickup. There's nostalgia watching this, but I'll never own another bug, don't want to deny any newer enthusiast the opportunity.
Yoooo this was awesome. Wish we could have a 30 min video once a month or something with a new build, or I. This case upgrades! Would love it watch that.
is there a bolt for the top of the new starter y’all put on? mine only has a bottom bolt and i don’t know what does in the top part because there’s no threading inside of it…
Did You Know That These Motors Came Out First With A 6 Volt Starter, Which I Think It Should Have In It, The 12 Volt Starter You Are Using Would Have Too Much Strength . That's Probably Wouldn't Help With The Stripping Of The Flywheel Gears ( Teeth ) If It's A 6 Volt Alternator It Won't Keep Your Battery Charged
I have a borderline autistic fixation on building an old school Afghan style dpv. Firstly, I need the base vehicle before anything. Plans are to be street legal but able to do average off-road (I live next to a moutian). What price range am I looking at for a reliable start before anything cosmetic? I'll take a high and a low estimate. [Edit: I'd also appreciate if you got some company references, this is a life goal tbh]
I'm only like 10 minds into the video and I've nerve worker on vw but it sounds too me like silent is out of time the way it is hitting the compression and back firing there the carb
That moment, when you first turn the key, and nothing happens….and for a split second, you think 😳 …we just paid $700 to haul away someones trash 😳 Also….I’m not very good at Mathin’ but ….isn’t it now, the $1200.00 Sandrail? 😳 …..i mean its still a worthwhile project, but i just know that some of your audience has Mathed, Before. 🤷♂️
Its amazing how one age of people vs snother age are so far apart in their knowledge of vws. Im interested in how you get it to run, and how many mistakes youll make vs the lack of actual of mechanical skills a proving it. I guess ill start doing heart surgery and film it!
Starters ain't cheap..You said you had 400 dollars worth of stuff in that box, I believe it cause parts ain't cheap anymore..Those bug engines use to run kinda like 4ever..In the 70s you wouldn't believe the rail buggys people tried building with bubblegum welds and whatnot..Those were cool buggy frames like you have but the Billy Bob back yard builds, naaaahhh. Horrible and nowhere near bein safe and that's why we don't hardly ever see a bunch of em cruising around in the summer..Everybody had 1 until the goof troop got together and started building horrible buggys so they took em off the roads cause they were considered unsafe although the 1 yall have is built strong cause people could buy em already put together or some assembly required but they were safe and reliable..I use to put fat tires on the rear and 70s on the front and do mine up like a drag car and it'd pull the wheels bad coming outa the hole lol..The 70s was so cool and gobs of fun..I haven't seen any bug's like that for quite a bunch of years...At least 45 years or less cause 80s is when the poleece started taking em off the roads but not every state banned em, I'm really not sure about em taking the bug's off the roads cause people went through a faze in life and they were everywhere..People traveled state to state and everything. $700 bucks + alittle love and youve got a piece of shit sand rail which is way betterr than the nicest go carty UTV. you can spend alittle money and make that thoing legit. As is it'll blow doors off a polaris that cost $10 grand. may not look as sweet as a new polaris, but in the dunes, nobody cares.good job gentleman getting that buggah running
Oh now I get it.. These redacted boys are from WA, that explains it. If you were from OR, you'd be chooching up HWY 26 to Mt. Hood. Just Kidding, You can't drive sand rails on Mt. Hood.

Same here 1989-1998 - air cooled years for me. Then water cooled thereafter
That is awesome!
Nothing is more fun then a VW buggy
I would pay 700 for this all day long. I love those 70s sand rails. I remember seeing these when i was a little kid. I always thought they were super cool.
We’ve always liked them too. Neat machines.
Not mention. The tires, are worth, at least three times that.
3rd gear to compression start. It's not going to run because it's way out of time adjust distributor. back fireing is wrong timing
My man!🫡

Fun video. That buggy was from my era. They were really fun. The latest and greatest cars are insane.
Awesome people you guys are addictive that's for sure
Chenowith comes to mind. Those buggies were the sh8T back in the day. rediculous amounts of money for them.
new favorite automotive channel

Love it
They are the easiest motors to work on
Super easy
Im pretty sure these VW engines are the next step from working on Briggs and Stratton engines. From there you progress to the small block chev.
It’s probably got a 6v ring gear on the fly wheel which like higher rpm fir take off
That would explain why it wouldn’t catch at low rpm
Great video. Looks like you guys are having lots of fun. Keep it up.
Yoooo this was awesome. Wish we could have a 30 min video once a month or something with a new build, or I. This case upgrades! Would love it watch that.
We are planning on making more RUclips content! We also post on the other platforms as well.
Use a Emery Board to clean the Points.

That clutch not gonna last long the way you letting out on it
It wouldn’t “grab” if I let it out any other way. Probably a worn clutch
The comments are full of genius minds.
Genius minds and grumpy folks who forgot what it’s like to have fun
This was so funny..! I love VW sand rails.
So do we!
You stole that for 700$
It’s one of those “too good of a deal to pass up on”
Yes he did!!
Great content and awesome people in this channal !
Thanks mate!
Good buy
I live in Washington to! Looks like your timing was out 180 lol cool stuff
Put a starter in from an automatic it directly bolts in don't have to worry about that bushing in the nose it's all self-contained. Just like a GM
Awesome video we need more
I remember sand rails actually most far as I member buggys were adjusted to stall if throttle couldn't be pushed some for safety.... like flipping it😅
Interesting!
Awesome job guys I feel your pain I'm working on getting a 55 vw 13.oocc back together
The rear tires alone cost more than $700. All things considered , that engine sounds pretty good. Let er rip tater chip!!
What was wrong with the old starter motor? It was spinning already
Cool cart!
Kevin, when you go out today can you pick up some M&Ms? Thank you.
Yes man you need to do a will it run 😊
omg, i love these buggies!
They are friggen sweet
shit's cool. Dude looks like Lt. Dangle.
Funny guys. cool projects
Thanks! Fun projects to work on.

Is the flywheel on the spare engine good???
Didn’t come with a flywheel :(
Instead of starter fluid you could o just put a gas rag over the carb that way no risk of locking the motor up or possibly popping a piston. Piston
These guys here would learn a lot of they would watch Vice Grip Garage.
Heck yeah they fun
Love the disc golf basket. Y’all play or just a roadside pick up?
We play
Lol this is a great video!😂 it’s like new!
Brand new
5:13 Ronaldo is the goat 🐐
I have a clean v6 fiero motor i want to put in something like this

I'd like to have that sand rail
Ride the clutch much?
New subsciber here!!!! You guys had rolling!!!??
Kool VW BUGGY
Is this the first time to drive stick asking for a friend 😂😂😂😂. Keep up the entertainment guys keep scooten n booten
First car was a 1995 ford ranger manual. This clutch either has issues or it’s meant to catch at the high rpm 🤷🏻
I have a nineteen eighty buggy too
Loving the Truly At Home Content things ain't meant to come together so ez sometimes 😉🤙
Thanks mate! Just learning as we go.
Put your hand over the carb wile it's running will suck all the junk threw and a new carb is $100-200
How the heck did you get one that cheap.
Fb marketplace skills
Timing 😮
That's a first model 1600 duel port already in it!! Not a 1200
We figured that out eventually 😂
You went to the parts store, and got no points?
I'm going to say that you need to adjust the valves just do it okay thanks Charles Williams later on jelly beans
haha shes a doozy great sand rail
Bug engines are the easiest mothers emoters ever to work on
I'm only like 10 minds into the video and I've nerve worker on vw but it sounds too me like silent is out of time the way it is hitting the compression and back firing there the carb

Legendary
Now you bring it to the sand
Can see you've never driven a standard. Nice by though.
Clutch would stall out if we shifted normally. Had to rev it up that high to get it to engage, so it’s probably a clutch problem and a carb problem.
Put an ls in it and call it a day
$700!? thats called highway robery. EDIT: i'd be pissed about altering the deal, just say what you want in the first place.
Why is there 2 of you? Im not even that drunk yet!
Yall are hilarious
I’m pretty sure it’s not a 12v it’s a 6v
12 v coil on it
deleted my other comments, but it was a fun video.

ALL THE WORK YOU DID YOU COULD HAVE PUT THE OTHER ENGIN IN
Bolt that motor down. It's not supposed to move.
The tranny strap was a wee bit lose
I think @@thebarnbrothersit's cool they made it run but yeah that motor should be bolted down
bet you found out they only drive straight at any real speed
That’s a 60s mod
Vw engines are easy as f to work on....
You guys get that motor cleaned out and running good and it'll thrill you to death
Once you get used to working on that engine, you'll never want to work on any other .... you'll see.
that starter couldve been fixed easily.
All right no way in hell you gave $700 for that sandrail
Yes way
Those tires alone are worth 700
Tear it down reboot it all
Fuck me it’s a beetle engine. The easiest engine to get going . Would of had it going in an hour
Is too much Starting fluid. Hold The gas pedal. wide open and show fire.
bro thats gta 5 like buggy
Really enjoyed the vid got a sub from me
🫡
3:47 😂
bro has tabaco in his mouth while talking😂
And no the air cooled VW engine has to be the easiest engine to work on
I have to agree. Although the Chrysler “ tower of power “ was pretty damn simple.
Why are you going so slow? Rev it!!
26:28 derrrr 🧠
Its so painful watching him spraying the starting fluid Jesus christ dude 😂😂😂😂😂
What in the world are you goofballs on..... Lemme git sum...🤣😂😂😂
Just havin fun knackering on some engines that’s all.
@@thebarnbrothers You boys living the good life there... Never stop knackering with the fellas...💯👍
