i added a winch to the front of mine, went with steel cable for a little added weight. i can take turns much faster. it is much nicer to loose a little traction at the rear wheels and NOT the front wheels when you have speed in a turn
I like the way you did the top-rear roll cage much better than it's original design. It'll perform better being narrower at the rear. The bolt on/off lower-rear roll cage is a must too. Nice work.
Man that looks so much like my dad's second rail, rite down to the instrument panel on the front cross bar, big brushed aluminum tank mounted behind our heads, good times in that buggy
At least you got access to a well-equipped shop pipe benders everything you're lucky as hell I would have never bought and when I would have built one from scratch it would have been way better
WElllllll, Not the way I would have done it but as long as the owner is happy with it. I built sand rails, that is a rock crusher but simply by changing the back tires you could have a lot of fun in the sand too.
The exhaust in these usually meets in the rear middle. Should 've made the exhaust form to the frame, not the other way around. This is done to protect them in roll overs. Not sure how many hills you're climbing but those wouldn't survive many rolls.
Do you know what type of front wheels it has or where I might be able to find some? I'm doing a baja bug restoration myself and one of the wheels is broken.
Get a crotch rocket engine to put in it cbr1000rr or Hayabusa just look for one it's been totaled out they're everywhere and you can usually get one between 800 and $1,200. Not to mention it's a hell of an upgrade lighter turns more RPMs and can be way faster. Boost a Hayabusa motor!!
Hate those dumb mass made alien look wounfup engine canams & side by sides!...old school rails will always be the coolest. Im finally getting my own 2 seater tomorrow..ive wanted one of my own forever..ever since riding in my dads in yuma dunes & rocky point when i was 2 years old🤘🏼💜
I learned at an early age that "nerds" are the best at everything, and to do as they do and respect them, and to learn how to defend them against bullies because they are precious. This man is almost as nerdy as I am🤓
yo i got the same motor 1600cc single port. its pretty sick what you did with the back tail, mines also missing but i think of doing like a wing or something. also cool thing how you got the bender i dont which sucks lol. cool vid.
The buggy is cool. But the motor is trash.U could have ported heads with big valves.Forged crank.chevy rods forged pistons.Big oil cooler and oil filter and put a drawthrough turbo. Then u do wheelies
I know this videos pretty old but im in the proccess of rebulding a sandrail with an identical engine to yours and was curious what size nuts and bolts you used to fasten the engine to the transmission. I've been looking all over ans just havent had any luck and cant really do anything else till i can order those nuts and bolts
if you don't mind. I was wondering if you you could possibly answer a few questions. I was wondering what the difference are between the type of suspension you have A- arm style vs I think it's called the beam style? Pros and cons. I'm new to getting a buggy and trying to gain a little knowledge before I make the purchase. Thank you
What is that frame chassis name? And the wheel base? I really like the looks of it! I love buggies! You're definitely better at fabricating then myself, one man band for sure!
@@TurnNBurn Thanks for answering Mudd. Having had a few sedan bugs I know that isn't enough because I've tried it. Needs the engine tin in the engine compartment to separate the bottom of the engine from the top. But I must be missing something because the rails seem to get by without it. Maybe because it just hangs out there in the breeze instead of being in a closed compartment? Can rails make do without the fan shroud ?
Same just bought one myself and making it street legal. Want to refresh the motor since I'm doing everything else. Can't cheap out it will catch up to me if I do.
Hey smart guy, YOU NEVER SAID IF THE ENGINE RUNS OR NOT that might be real important especially if you want to use it again. There is NO point in putting all those new shiny parts on it if it does not run!
Lol that was not a battery Box that was a storage compartment for all your crap such as tow straps. Also like anybody else mentioned weight up front is good.
@@TurnNBurn , I was just messing around. I believe it was a battery Box. Most people at least mount a ice chest or box up there for stuff. Thank you for taking the time and making these videos I enjoy them.
If i were you i would replace the motor with an 1835 vw motor and possibly turn it into a mid engine. And i would be careful with the turning brakes. If you dont know what your doing you can blow the spider gears in your differential. Just saying
Hearing that motor start was music to my ears. It brought back some treat memories.

Fantastic video! You have some talent young man. Doesn't hurt that you have, what appears, literally every tool on hand, lol. Well done, brother
Heavy battery tray upfront for counter balance helps with handling and keeping the front end down
Front end down? We don't want that.
i added a winch to the front of mine, went with steel cable for a little added weight. i can take turns much faster. it is much nicer to loose a little traction at the rear wheels and NOT the front wheels when you have speed in a turn
MuddOxRacing wheelies are fun but after a while it gets old when you just want to drive.
I just finished up a rail here in idaho. I moved the fuel cell up front and with the winch and battery that made a big improvement. Great video
Wow you really weren't messing around! You did all this over spring break? Good for you man! In truly impressed every time I see one of your builds
Thanks!
Ok....I'm impressed. If I had a son your age I would definitely fund a project like this to keep you off the video games. Bravo.
Leroy Hogwash what a nice dad. I want to swap a r1 engine into a quad
@@kelbanater7955 that's exactly what I'm doing rn but in a gokart frame.
Just traded a few things for 1 and it’s just about a rolling frame. Any suggestions for a cheap motor?
I'll be your son since I don't have a dad 🤣
Congrats on the sandrail. Love mine. Its nothing like hearing it's first start up. Keep up the work.
Great job.Like the colors. I build sand rails in my spare time so I'm always looking for new ideas...
Nice Job! Hope you get lots of smiles and miles

Love the tires. I have a sand rail I'm rebuilding also. They are lots of fun.
Very nice job! Why would anyone give this a thumbs down?
Painting the barrels and heads might not be the smartest move on an aircooled engine, but a real nice job on the rebuild.
Very nice build. Hope to see more videos of your buggy
Awesome, I want couple of them
nice work also love the color scheme
Have a street legal rail,type41800,I'm setting it up for what we call a woods buggy in the east, built heavier, climbs trees and mountains
Looks awesome 👍🏻 Like you alway liked the old sand rails! Would also like to get my hands on one someday
made it look easy bravo thumbs up !
Great job it looks great.
You need two twin choke down draught weber carburettors and short manifolds to make it go good.
Great build bro
This buggy looks cool keep up the good work
Love your build
great job!!!
Very nice restore and the only thing I'd do different is paint the shocks black instead of white and paint the wheels black
At least you got access to a well-equipped shop pipe benders everything you're lucky as hell I would have never bought and when I would have built one from scratch it would have been way better
i want one. good job man!!!!!
I am rebuilding my grandfathers vw sand rail. I am going to paint it plum crazy purple!
great job man

Cool project!
Very well done
I've always wanted a old sandrail
This radical man!
You inspired me to fix my 66 vw sand rail; mine don’t need that much work so I’m luckier
Nice work
Do you know what type of front wheels it has or where I might be able to find some? I'm doing a baja bug restoration myself and one of the wheels is broken.
Dang, Mr do it all has it all lol

At first I thought this kid was a complete nerd...- Turned out to be one of the best videos I've ever seen...- Kid is awesome....
I mean, nerds are typically the people who do stuff right anyhow.

Amazing. Are you selling that thing by any chance?
I’m tall with long legs.
Where did you find all the new parts?
Cool!
I just bought one with no engine, I’m starting my build now
Hola saludos desde mexico!!! tendras los planos??? Do you have a plans??

Montoya the Rager the engine he has in the video is a dual port.
I'm about to buy one my self. Could you give me any pointers on a website to buy parts for it..
Hi bro, is there advantage on bending tubes over cut and weld? I don't have tube bender.
Faster to make, stronger, and looks better. You can get cheap benders online and it's absolutely worth it.
I feel like I'm watching a Benny Hill video.
Yes, where's the girls in doctor uniforms
The buggy is cool. But the motor is trash.U could have ported heads with big valves.Forged crank.chevy rods forged pistons.Big oil cooler and oil filter and put a drawthrough turbo. Then u do wheelies
Or just buy a Polaris
Where do you order you parts from I have a sand rail identical to your and would like to know where you get all your parts
Any VW place

I actually called a VW place to order them. It's pretty difficult finding out what they are.
@@TurnNBurn Ah alrighty thanks dude
Where did you get your parts from boss??
i know this is 3 years after this video was made, but about how long did rebuilding this take? i’m looking at getting one and am pretty busy lol
I did the majority of the work in 1 week during spring break, but the final details took a couple months in the evenings.

I'm not quite sure.
The front is a beam style. So it’s not independent. A arm suspensions are independent.
That beam style is rugged.
What is that frame chassis name? And the wheel base? I really like the looks of it! I love buggies! You're definitely better at fabricating then myself, one man band for sure!
I have no idea what frame it is. It does look sweet.
Is it a Chenowyth?
How is the engine kept cool ? Always wondered about that on rails.
Pulley driven fan with shroud

Do you know how much you can sell them fixed and cleaned up
Hahahahaha omg painting the engine while its together lol
toordog that is actually the best way to do it. No fingerprints or grease from having to install the part after paint
toordog Probably didnt wanna invest in a bunch of new gaskets and stuff
What is the Temp Gauge for? Its air cooled.
Engines still get hot
Exhaust leak?
You forgot the tau cannon
Can you add a link to where you got all of your parts from and exhaust.
Mostly Empi parts
You coulda built one from scratch w that shop.. Sweet tho!
can you list the parts in the video?I have one of these im rebuilding at the moment
I also would like a list of parts too
Same just bought one myself and making it street legal. Want to refresh the motor since I'm doing everything else. Can't cheap out it will catch up to me if I do.
in the fifties they started putting linkages in steering columns due to injuries of impalement something to fix i see it a lot
awesome job but... why you paint the engine? paint will burn if you make it run
All vintage engines are painted.
You don't Paint vw engines the cases are magnesium and the engines air cooled and the paint holds heat in
cool
Hey smart guy, YOU NEVER SAID IF THE ENGINE RUNS OR NOT that might be real important
especially if you want to use it again. There is NO point in putting all those new shiny parts on it if it does not run!
Smart guy checked compression before he painted. Best running engine I have.
First sandrail I’ve seen I actually like. And anything in Gulf livery is a winner every time - fantastic job!
Lol that was not a battery Box that was a storage compartment for all your crap such as tow straps. Also like anybody else mentioned weight up front is good.
I pulled the cables out. It really was a ridiculous battery box.

Some drawing for dimensions and bending of pipes on a vehicle structure ?!...

Hopefully your new tubes arent leaking, i heard those two piece guys suck.

Why so much positive camber on the front?
Positive camber is usually better for off road purposes.
How much do you think you spent on it?
$3k
@@TurnNBurn Want to sell it?
In total have much did you pay for every thing
$3,000
I like the new rear end... my friend has this same model... imma tel him he should do a weld job like this

I sold it. Compared to a modern side by side, the VW buggy just felt outdated and unimpressive.
I thought it said ww buggy (world war)
