Boy you sure brought back s bunch of memories for me, I met my wife 46 years ago at Silver Lake Michigan and we bugged for years, I am now 86 and a full time caregiver for her. Those memories are very precious to me! Thanks
Thank you for sharing
God bless you
You’re fortunate man… Your wife even more. Hang on tight.
Silver Lake is special here also, we're regulars over there in 70s thru 90s with buggies and bikes
@onehot57 - Always good to relive old memories. God bless ✝️ you and your wife sir.
Man watching this really took me back, what an awesome time that was before cell phones ruined everything. Thanks merlin for treating us with that awesome trip down memory lane!
Two things that you never forget, fun times and good grub cooked on an open fire. Thanks for sharing the memories Merlin
I miss the 7 0s & 80s, your stories & home movies took me back for a minute. Thanks, they were simpler times! God Bless & PEACE OUT!!!
You guys give old guys a good name. Lots of fun watching the builds and hearing the old guy stories
That was neat watching you guys driving down the street in your time machine of the mind. wiping away 37 years with each house you passed by. Thanks for sharing your first "get out of jail free card" story with all the MOSG family!
It's funny how seeing these old home videos can bring a feller back to the good ole days. And the best thing is you're still hanging out with your childhood friends! I'm sure you will have a great double nickel celebration!
Merlin, this brings back a lot of memories from my childhood. I pretty much grew up going to the dunes every year just as your kids did, and at 35 now I decided to purchase a truck and buggy to re-live the memories all over again. Maybe in 20 years I can look back just like you have, all over again.
Really cool how we're all going back to the dunes in force.
Simpler times! Keep it "old school" while bringing in another generation. Thanks Merlin.
Man you sure do you know how to hit the feels. Brought tears to my eyes thinking that i’ll never have that with my kids. Reason being is cell phones and technology ruined stuff like that. If all the kids nowadays could go back in time to a better time like that, like I grew up with, they would finally realize what they’re missing. Hopefully more young people start leaning towards the good ol times. Thanks Merlin
I know the feeling my kids are very good boys but I made the mistake of buying a xbox.........they now never want to play outside or go fishing with me I have to force them and they act like I'm making them mow the yard or something
Thank you Merlin for sharing the little glimpses in your life thing I see is the smiles
Well that bring back memories being 15 with the Volkswagen pan dune buggy, no shell black pipe tubing holding the steering wheel. Thanks for stirring memories of my childhood. Loved watching the kids. Having so much fun. You have a blessed day.🙏🏻
Such a pleasure watching your vids , this one is really great with you turning back the clock like 25yrs I guess
Bless you all and may 2024 be a great year for you
That buggy is more than just a car,all the memories, thumbs up double time, great video
We loved the dunes, use to spend a week down there in Glamis when our boys were young back in the early 90s. I had my ATC 250R and the kids rode some old 110 3 wheelers. Great memories.
I love the three wheelers.
best times ever
Glamis ,brought back good memories.!! ❤😊😊
1969 baby myself I think this is the only channel that starts a project and finishes it in the same video. Awsome !
What an awesome way to relive and remember past experiences!
A life well lived includes a lifelong friend to help you stay young. I love the fact that you have a best friend, Brother from another, from your childhood...that is priceless. I had a Dune Buggy as a teen, though I lived in Upstate NY, and that thing was beyond awesome. I had a 1600cc VW engine in it and a quarter keg for a gas tank. I perfected my manual transmission skills at the ripe age of 14 on that Buggy and a 1968 Bug that I drove in the fields...I grew up in the country, and I miss it. Great watching you, Paul at #TheFabRats and Matts crew at #MattsOffRoadRecovery get this platoon ready for Glamis. I can't wait to see the videos.
GOBS OF THANKS MERLIN...PIX & VIDEOS ARE PRICELESS...🎉😎👀🕊️👈
I thought about building a little buggy one day. Just to haul to the beach to fish.
Happy Birthday young man.
Merlin,I am 83 but you have brought my youth back,I was the VW know it all back in the 70s,boy that was a fun time,I miss it and friends like you,God bless.
Running down memory lane with your family Merlin. Best video ever. Thank you.
Thanks for bringing back my 1970s memories. I had a 1972 VW Beetle that had a trailer hitch built into a custom rear bumper. I still have the bumper. I trailered my Honda and Hodaka trail bikes and later a Suzuki RM 125 and 250 motor cross bike to track. I still have the Hodaka gas tank. J C Whitney had a special Volkswagen catalog for parts which was my Christmas wish book. Popular Mechanics magazine had VW dune buggy builds which I still have a copy. I can remember changing oil, adjusting valves, tweaking carb and changing ignition point distributor and condenser. I think I upgraded to dual point distributor, loud exhaust, carb, air filter and shocks. The VW lasted many years and never left me on the side of the road. It was a great engine, simple to work on and easy to drop engine as a shade tree mechanic to replace clutch and throw out bearing. I went trail and hill climbing and later motocross. Good family fun for adults and a Honda 70 kept the grandchildren happy. Merlin looks like you are with 3 and 4 wheelers for kids.
Man - this brings back old memories!! We used to race these things on the ice - Im from Canada if anyone is asking. We took a bug pan, cut 2 feet out of it - Yes two feet!! Made ice racers, fixed the engines so they wouldn't freeze up, studded the rear tires and found out you had to remove the treads on the front wheels or it would send ice right into your face! Build a half assed shroud to keep you from freezing up and off we went. Yes we built a roll cage if you are asking. With a stock bug engine you could have fun all winter. Greetings from the wild men from Canada with ice in their teeth! Ha ha ha ! I AM SO GLAD I SUBSCRIBED!!!
Happy birthday, Merlon. 🥳 (But i’m not convinced that it’s your 55th birthday.... Rather your 25th.) Best wishes from someone over the pond.
Back in the day when Glamis was Family Friendly ! Thanks for sharing the Memories !
Merlin, I shed a tear watching the family trips memories from Glamis,,My daughter is 30 now and we have similar videos of her back in the day. We mainly went to the desert and not Glamis. but same experience. thanks for sharing!

Wow I remember these days, I started going to the dunes in 1979 I was 13 then and still think the first trip with my Uncle was the best time I ever had at the dunes, thanks for sharing the memory

Happy Birthday Merlin 🎂🥳
Great Pictures of your Past
Sterling was having a Blast
Thanx for sharing your Great 👍 and Content with the Family
Have a Great Day 👍
Just talked to my childhood friend of 61 yrs yesterday and had a similar conversation. Awesome memories ! Yard full of more toy projects just can't stop. Just doing things a little slower. Boys will be boys. lol 👍
I loved watching the boy on the Yamaha and the girl and Merlin on the motorcycle. Reminded me of my two sons growing up riding atvs and motor bikes. Great family memories. Another fantastic video Merlin.
My child hood, swingaxle-beam cars and 3 wheelers back when it was fun!!! Not the money contest it is today. My dad passed away in February of 22, going thru is stuff I found hundreds of 60's and 70's dune buggy magazines, the pioneers. Thanks for these memories
Thanks for sharing the old video`s Merlin. Looks like you had plenty of nice family outings.
Happy birthday Marelyn. Love your channel.
Who
Over here in Europe we called your dune buggies - beach buggies, on account of most folk live nowhere near a desert.
The thing that all of those buggies have in common is the inburstable air-cooled aluminium flat four VW boxer engine, the 1600cc preferable if you could get one.
I had the 1970's VW1600 Type 3 fastback, with the pancake boxer, designed by one F. Porche.
VW's 'Chevvy Corvair'.
I never understood why nobody used that pancake engine with the cooling fan on the end of the crankshaft. Imo it was far more neat & compact, designed as it is to live under a trapdoor in the 'boot locker' at the rear of the car.
The identical set up of the Chevvy flat 6 boxer in the back of the US Corvair.
Incidentally the same layout, as I understand it, with the classic Porche 911.
You know, American muscle, and all that.
Thanks for making me smile. I never had a dune buggie but I did have a 62 VW (w/Porsche 911 engine with twin 2 barrel carbs). I was following friends in Road Runners but got sick of the dust on the football access road at Middlebury College so I passed them. We met the police at the main road. Reminded me of your wheelie story (btw I got a warning).
You're a blessed man. You have old friends and family that share old memories and that is a real blessing. You have done the right thing whenever you could and now you're being able to enjoy yourself. I was surprised that you are only 5 years younger than me. I am a Boomer. Those old movie clips and pictures are better than gold.
Back in the 70’s I built a mid engine V8 buggy using the motor and transmission from a 69 Olds Torranado. Couldn’t steer the thing under power because it was too short.
Its great you have McKay to relive these memories with. I recentley lost my ski buddy from the same era. We lost touch over the years. I found out he had died a few weeks ago and it was a tough pill to swallow. Good times !!
Wow so much fun thanks Merlin great Sunday video!!✌️🇺🇲
Great video and home movies Mer.
Now i need to digout the super 8 for a ride down memory lane.
Rails,Jeep's and Jetboats.
Good morning from Alberta 🇨🇦 our temperature is currently -41°F, so dunebuggy and sand dunes sound like an adventure! 😊
It's been on and off like that in FBX, AK warmed up to zero today, because it's snowing today!
Sounds fun! Quiet is good. Wished I had a set of paddles!
An old friend of mine use to sand drag. He got into desert racing because instead of loosing in 3 seconds, it would take him all day to loose!
Awesome home videos Great to see your son out there having fun with you
It's nice to see this. I inherited my buggy thats in the garage. Last time I drove it was maybe 13, when I still fit in it. I was 5'7" back then. Mine also has a v8. If you ever visited Sand Mtn or Pismo on major holiday weekends you might have run into us. It's a short wheel base, full length is 11 feet motor to bumper, Bright yellow with a Yellow Jacket flag at the top. I'm like maybe 4 years difference in age, than yourself.
Kids will be kids. Then and now. 😂🤣😂 Thanks for sharing the old videos, nice touch.
Wow,what neat memories for you all. Thanks for taking us subscribers along for the ride. Love the channel. Keep up the great work.👍✌️😎😁🍀🍀🍀🍀🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🤙🤙🤙🤙
Love the flash back lots of smiles and good times that's what life is all about.
Keep the good times coming or we will get old before our time. 😅
THE GREAT SAND DUNES. BOY THEY ARE SOMETHING ELSE TO ENJOY. WE WOULD GO TO LITTLE SARAHA ALOT ( every weekend). THANKS FOR THE VIDS.😁
Fun times back in the day, there's lots of fun times to remember when you get old Merlin - speaking from one who turned 78 last month. The mind is still willing but if I knew I was going to live this long, I woulda taken better care of myself. lol - no I wouldn't, there's not much I would change.
Merlin reminds me so much if my former boss(died from a heart attack 6 years ago).
Something just feels familiar, and i enjoy it more than i can put into words.
Thank you for keeping it old school. And passing on your knowledge.
That's an old Chenowth model "4lwd." It was the first buggy I built back in the 90's and is a solid little frame. Can't wait to see what you do with it!
HBD Merlin! You sure know how to squeeze the most out of life. Keep on keepin on!
Back near a hundred years ago when I was 18 I had a VW pan that had been made into a "buggy" with the addition of roll bars. It was not terribly fast but OH ! Man !! what a load of fun.
I just wanted to say Merlin happy birthday, and never let that Ol man in , I just turned 67 and I in joy the video, I only got to ride in my exbrother in law buggy and it was about the biggest thrill, it’s was just a frame and motor and that was it ,, nothing else…
Thanks Merlin for this trip down memory lane! We used to run with a group from Newport and Fountain Valley back in the 70's Camped in Mammoth Wash, on the north end of Glamis, So much Fun and Great Memories! Learned to drive there in our Myers Manx.
Thanks for sharing your valuable family times in the sand dunes .
Your home videos ripped out some old memories of the desert for me in the 90’s. ❤
And thank you again for taking me back to my childhood I remember going to the sand dunes as a kid in California. Awesome time thanks again.
Good story on the Sheriff... made me laugh and remember my own! Back in the late 80s (high school), I had my friends 70 Cuda to do some wiring on it and took it for a cruise. I felt compelled to lay down a mean burnout next to the local hangout, rounded the corner of the building and there were 3 police cars parked in the lot having a dinner break. Needless to say, there was one spot between two cars and I just pulled in and surrendered. They knew my mom (local ER nurse) and they sent me on my way with, "We'll just have a chat with your mom...." Worse than a ticket. LOL
Your kids pictures made me miss my little Honda 70 ATC. I would ride it for hours and hours as a kid back in the 80s. I wish I still had it today even though the handle bars would probably be digging into my knees.
I'm sixty now, but boy does that bring back memories for me. I'm in Oregon now, but my hometown is San Diego and we grew up with weekend trips to Glamis and Ocotillo Wells. I used to have a hopped-up three wheeler back in 1977 that I held the record for longest wheelies with the most people onboard. Five people with me sitting on the handlebars, legs over the front wheel and running the throttle while yelling out to the person in the third position when to shift. My cousin still has all of that craziness on 8mm film. Good times, thanks Merlin and McKay!
Great old video's. They bring back my days at Glamis.
Love the back when get out of jail stories and the men and women behind the badge who gave us those stories
Absolutely love the old vids, I remember my son pulling out his tri-zinger the same as your son. Also it's -10 degrees here in Wisconsin as a I watch this , so that's nice too.
Thanks for sharing your memories with us, can't wait to see the rooster tails off the back of that rail job.
Thanks for sharing those wonderful family memories!
Old school fun, best times! Thanks for sharing your family photos
😂😂😂. That’s hysterical. Great job guys. Thank you 😊
Brings back memories for me to here in Western Australia, last "buggy" as we call them had a 4.4 liter v8 from a localy built leyland p76, Basically a big block buick motor, ran a bus gear box with a fiat shifter out of a little coupe with reverse pattern but short crisp shift, wheel stands for miles, me and least 3 friends ran similar Buggies, was great, when we hit the dunes the other buggies cleared out gave us space and watched the show lol, good for the ego, wish we could go back to those days of weekends in the shed and piles of parts and just build buggies and hot rods.
Man I loved that end where it was your son and family and friends, I’m sure you were there also but didn’t recognize you. Good holdsome fun , there’s nothing lie memories bc there always goin to be there and having it documented where you can go back and just enjoy and watch is priceless for sure.
Nice old sand rail definitely deserves a new life out on the dunes!
Some wild looking old school rides. Love seeing the old bikes and warrior
We use to dune quite a bit back in the day before Gordons Well got overrun with stupid people. We left for a ride to Glamis in the morning and it was after dark when we got back and the entire area was packed with campers that weren't there when we left. it was so dusty we rode into 3 camps where the roads use to be before finally finding our camp. That was on Thanksgiving, I forget the year and that was the last time we went. I had a nice 4 seat rail that I sold to a guy in Parker. I doubt the car is still around. I saw the seats the seats you put in your buggy and instantly thought, those are Beard Seats and my mom may have sewn those together. She worked for Barbara and Ed for 25 years from the mid 70's through the 90's. That brought back a ton of memories watching this episode...
Nice job getting the old dune buggy running! Looks like you ought to be able to have a lot of fun with it!!
Thanks for the memories, nothing like good clean fun. Merlin I want to be your neighbor, so you can fix all of the things I break!
My dad bought a 356 with a removable hardtop with a blown engine, this was around 1963 or so, I was about 9-years-old at the time. He rebuilt the engine without ever have touched a Porche engine before, only had a shop manual. Kept it for a few months, then, sold it to a co-worker at the GM plant he worked at. Two days after the guy bought it, he spun the ass end around into a telephone pole and totaled it.
When you have the light from the garage opening as a background, you become just silhouettes against the light. Better position the camera so the garage opening is behind the camera. Then you get the light on you instead of behind you. It will be a much better picture where you can see what you are doing. Fun build!😎
Well just like everyone else in the comments you’re bringing back a bunch of memories for me buddy.
I will never forget my first ride in a sand rail at Pismo I was about six years old and it was after dark when we got there,,,
my dad‘s buddy threw me a helmet and said jump in. I will never forget I was wearing checkered Vans And I couldn’t believe how bright they were when he turned on the six KC Daylighters and ripped a fat wheelie about a quarter mile down the beach.
All II could see was my shoes and and taillights in the distance through the expanded metal floor I was hooked on VDubs from that moment on
Hi Merlin this is Glen from coos Bay Oregon I watch u all the time love how u collect old trucks and cars I watch the fabrats Robby and Matt's off road and of course Casey as well I have learned a little bit from watching and I really appreciate what u do and keep the great work up buddy
In the early '70s we'd take our Ford Quadra Vans bikes and buggies to Blythe or Picacho on the Colorado River. Six groups of us would go for a three day trip. We got our buggy frames from Chenowith frames in San Diego. I saw original owner, Steve, in NorCal.
Don’t call yourself old Merlin, I’ve got 15 years on you and still feel like I’m 35, if I can set aside the stiff back and all the other aches and pains.
Love your OSG, love seeing you use Oxy-Acetylene, and all the stuff I had and used back in the day, patching up old cars, when I was living in England.
Love your memory-movies and photos, time marches on at an ever increasing pace… 😍
God bless you and your family
❤️🇷🇴
MOSG its funny as we get older all we have are great friends & memories. May they both live on ❤
Wow I am blown away Merlin.. Every video I watch I learn you had an adventurous life.. Great memories and thanks for sharing..
Awesome old vids. You did good, Merlin. Happy Birthday.
I remember a story Jesse told about a dune buggy a million years ago. I might not have it exactly right. But, I think he had a VW bug and a dune buggy, but only one engine between them. He'd haul the buggy to the dunes on a trailer behind the bug, yank the engine from the bug, and put it on the buggy, go play, switch back, then haul it home.
Sounds like a good time!
That’s exactly right I road shotgun with him for years. It only took about 10 minutes to change the motor from one to the other and back fun times
Story Time with Merlin and McKay😊
Boy that classic glamis footage sure brought back memories for me. Thank you and happy birthday
Fun times with family. That is what shapes the future generations. I remember the times at the lake and family trips to different parts of the country . Enjoy your channel very much 😊.
Thumbs way up. Thanks for sharing!👍👍👍👍
Wow, sort of a coincidence... Well a little one. My last rail buggy had the 1600 Super 90 engine out of a '61 356B that got totaled. I had that engine for about 2 years, but traded down to a doghouse VW engine with 1850 cc jugs. I got the VW engine and $500 cash in 1988 for my Super 90 engine. So since your working on a 356 and a rail buggy, I see a connection.
What great memories….. great to see some good old times …..
Merlin and McKay this is a good video and it brings back so many memories for you guys. This dune buggy will let you relive some of those memories!
Awesome! HAPPY B DAY!
