What Should I Do With This Model A? To Chop It or Not To Chop It... That is the Question!?

  • ‪@MerlinsOldSchoolGarage‬ is back to work on the Model A, trying to get the last few things in order for it to start and drive. This project came together quickly for him so he has extra time to think about how to modify this project. Will he change the entire care and chop the top to rat rod it out or leave it Stock? Watch to find out!

I watch all these guys building exhausts for their cars on RUclips, and you're the first one I've heard mention back pressure. Your cousin Paul seems to just buid them and weld them without any worries about back pressure. Long time ago a guy explained the science of building exhausts, and the theory of how much each bend alters the amount of back pressure, but nobody seems to talk about it any more on any of the channels I watch.

    • @gordonmurray3153

Away back in the 1970s, as kids we had guys pull out the baffles in the silencers of their 50cc unrestricted mopeds, to make them sound and go faster.
Yamaha and Suzuki would warn of the consequences for performance and of the danger of overheating the engine.
Only in US RUclips fabrication shops it seems, is engine back pressure and exhaust tuning not considered an issue.
So long as it all looks & sounds good, it's good to go.

    • @thelonerizla1

I remember tuning exhausts and manifolds when trying to squeeze as much power out of an asthmatic "a" series 1310cc in my mini 1275gt . David Vizard brought out a book "tuning the a series" it was my bible . All made sense back then with big valve heads , high lift cams with big overlaps and a 40dcoe poking out the dash board !

Been there as well, with a stage 2, 1071 S in a ‘62 shell, back in the day, straight-cut box and LCB manifold to get all the pipes the same length from valve to side-exit.
Those were the fun days ❤️🇷🇴

    • @gordonmurray3153
      @gordonmurray3153 4 месяца назад +1

@@George-dy3ptyeah pretty much. Content providers in the US prefer to use engines older than most of the folk watching.
I eg only go back as far as 1960.
Over here eg in Scotland we have strict safety and emmisions laws about what is permitted to use our public highways.
An annual Ministry of Transport MOT test is mandatory on vehicles 3 years or older.
So our older cars tend to get scrapped when they fail their MOT.

MOSG can make a running car 🚙 out of parts faster than anyone on RUclips. Appreciate how there’s less talk and more “gettin’ at it” per video.

Have to build things to accommodate the Autumn years of life now so keeping it stock roof height and easier to get in and out of was the best choice. Now you'll have some toys you'll have a better chance of being able to still play with when Winter arrives.

Merlin I love what you are doing to this ole bucket coupe. Ya wanna laugh years many years ago my Daddy built a 5 window coupe and when I joined the service USN he and my Mom decided to divorce but he wanted me to have the Hotrod as we called it. I knew he was strapped for money so I offered him money for it. He accepted and I bought it and brought it home to Texas he was in Michigan. Anyway I owned it for 10 years and ended up going through my own divorce. I sold it and now at 61 YO I’m watching you bring this ole girl into Hotrod status and am loving every moment. There’s allot more to my story but I love what you’re doing. Keep it up brother.

Why does it always seem that you make the right decision? I think because it's your decision to make! Not every mechanic or fabricator does it the same way. They make it their own way! The goal is always the same, to get it on the road again! And however that happens is what we the subscribers like to see! Merlin, you're a wizard, a magician, if you will! You know all the tricks of your trade and for us to see the magic you perform is mind-blowing! I love what you do. Be different, DO NOT chop the top !
For a bunch of parts gathered from here and there, that is a pretty cool A bone.
I like one color paint on a body but it is not my car.
At least the interior is painted and shiny.
Big fat rear tires with small skinnies on the front would give it a touch of attitude.
    It's a fine ride.
