      Who is having this argument? It sure doesn't involve climate scientists, they've pretty well settled on the consensus that human activity is causing it.

    i live in a third world country, air pollution here is 3-4 times above average in winter... we are trying to get our government to reason but they dont care at all and why would they care when US company comes and fill their pockets to build huge factory which will pollute our air even more and contribute to the global warming... so instead asking us all who dont have money and time to deal with this problem just go and convince the first world countries on lowering the emissions and like with wars and everything else they will be able to force us to lower our negligible contribution to the global warming...
    above all its the first world countries who created all this pollution and caused the global warming mostly because they are the ones exploiting their vast resources in the past when this problem started...

      +IamIUareU It's not that I disagree, but the think you might be conflating air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, which are two largely separate issues.
      Normal air pollution is mainly localised and has a direct impact on human health, common air pollutants include small carbon particulates and nitrous oxide and sulphur dioxide. This type of air pollution comes mainly from transport and industry and is, like I said, localised. It's also relatively short-term.
      Greenhouse gases, which are also technically air pollutants I suppose, are not directly bad for human health - the fractionally higher proportions of CO2 and methane in the atmosphere do not directly harm people.
      Again, I'm not saying you're wrong, but when you say 'air pollution here is 3-4 times above average in winter' it's not entirely clear whether you are talking about greenhouse gases or not.

      here where i live we dont have any climate change... 40°C in summer, -30°C in winter... the air polution is the main concern... have you ever seen the air pollution animations that NASA published? we breathe the pollution that US/EU/China is producing and we dont have so much factories to pollute it so much...

    • @Hobypyrocom
      @Hobypyrocom 8 лет назад +1

      Merry Machiavelli
      totally true, but i am talking about both... in my country 100% of the factories are owned by US/EU and they are the ones who doesnt care about the air quality here... they fill the pockets of the government and the government is quiet about the problem, even if the government tries to solve the problem we will have another Ukraine here, US oligarchs will be like "you dont want to play by our rules and you try to charge our companies for stupid air control laws so here you have it"... those factories which doesnt care about air pollution and health of their workers and the surrounding environment are also the ones who doesnt care about greenhouse emissions... my country is 25,713 km2 or 9,779 sq mi so even if one factory doesnt obey by the international laws for air quality and greenhouse emissions whole country will suffer, and since 2002 more than 20 such factories are opened here owned by US/EU companies....

    I live in Kansas, when I was 5, we would get feet of snow a year. Now, its November 23 at 12:00 and its 53 degrees Fahrenheit outside, and no snow in sight.

    • @Golgiaparatus2
      @Golgiaparatus2 8 лет назад +24

      +TheIdealGasLaw Not that I disagree with climate change and all, I actually do strongly believe that a change is necessary to prevent the effects of climate change, but the weird warm weather that's happening is actually due to the particularly severe El Nino cycle that we're in right now. At least that's What I've learned in class. I live in Minnesota, and we've had snows, but none that stayed for more than a few seconds.

    • @nathanlogan6277

      +Golgiapparatus2 and that severe El Nino is caused by unusually high sea and air temperatures.

      +Golgiapparatus2 It isn't just a factor of severity but a factor of likelihood and frequency. Not to mention it isn't like we were at 0% global warming in 1997, if any current moment is considered "100%"--relatively speaking of course.

    Good idea - except that you don't tell anyone about the planetary thermal hysteresis. It takes a long time (several decades) for the effect of the existing GHG to force the planet to a new "normal" temperature. You could say that we're experiencing now what was added to the atmosphere-ocean system in the '80s. If we could somehow cease all CO2 and CH4 increases today, it would take decades for the planet to warm to the new level. The point is: we should have listened to _us meteorologists_ a long time ago.
    And even if we stopped all GHG release now, there are a few feedback mechanism that will continue unabated - it's going to get hot.
    And which particular politicians will commit political suicide? Politicians are influenced most by their donors who have money, and it's not to their advantage to change a system that currently supports the rich. And what untested geoengineering solution will we attempt to use at a scale that's 10 times larger than worldwide food production? (Current CO2 production is over 35GT per year, and world food production is under 4GT)
    Why not present the entire picture?

      +BuilderOfBlocks
      Well, let's see. That might be because its NOT happening. Compared to the Carboniferous Period, we are at about half the average temperature and something like 1/10th the atmospheric CO2, if my memory serves.
      Its not happening now; 20 years with no change in temperature.
      And certainly not fast, because the slope of that temperature graph for the last 20 years is FLAT...and the slope of the temperature graph for the last 400,000 years is NEGATIVE.
      So, yeah, actually slowly COOLING as a planet...which is kinda what you would expect from a system that is slowly losing its inertial energy derived from the Big Bang to drag.

    • @BuildersOfBlocks
      @BuildersOfBlocks 8 лет назад +2

      Ryan resa And your last paragraph doesn't make any sense to me. Maybe you could explain it to me. The way I understand it, inertia refers to an objects resistant to change of momentum. The only 'drag' is the 'drag' on the Higgs Field everything has, but that isn't true drag, and is only an analogous explanation to simplify the explanation for how things have mass and experience weight and gravity, which again would not contribute to the change of a system's entropy.

      +Alexander Williams More snow and colder conditions doesn't really disprove global warming. It actually kinda supports it.
      More warming means that more ice would melt in the poles. This introduces more cold water into the surrounding seas which means temperatures would actually drop in some places. The Cooler seas around the Arctic would mean that melting would slow down but it's not due to global warming not happening but to the melted ice making the surrounding seas colder than usual.
      It's the Earth Climate balancing mechanism.

      Stephen Nielsen Well, the problem is that the satellite record and the surface record have differed significantly in the past few years, so to rely on both is to pretty much say we're clueless.
      The reason I think satellite measurements ar ebetter is because they require fewer adjustments. Surface temperatures have to adjust for local conditions such as urban heat islands, thus leading to the potential of erroneous results.
      NASA has made very heavy adjustments to their data (see Dr. Easterbrook's Congressional testimony for more nuanced information on that).
      The point I'm making with my Native American example is that climate change is going to happen with or without humans, thus if we are going to make positive changes to the environment, we can start with those things we know we can control (I apologize for not being up front with that, I made another post on this video talking about effects outside of human intervention).
      As far as your questioning of my last point, I'm confused. Could you possibly believe that invasive species such as those in the Great Lakes, habitat encroachment such as that in the Florida Everglades, and the endangerment of certain species of animals are not human-created problems?
      Sure, I could provide proof of this, but I absolutely hope that we would both agree that those sure are problems that we face without me having to.
      As far as the global warming side of things, I can be more clear. There is no evidence of any net adverse effects caused by climate change. What we have seen are positive and negative impacts of climate change. Positive changes include increased latitude range of various species of plants and animals, and the overall greening of the globe.
      I'll provide references to those if you want them in another reply, but I'm a bit tired and don't feel like opening my bookmarks and hunting it down right now.

    I live in Australia, and even though we receive large amounts of sun light the government still has it set up for energy to come from the burning of coal rather than solar because of the money involved. I find it disgusting that people will ruin the planet and cause the loss of ecosystems and lives through climate change. In an attempt to reduce my effect on this I will try to get solar panels installed on my parents house.

    Here in the Philippines we battle both drought and typhoons. There was a time this year that we tried to battle/adjust to both in one month. We were advised to do water collection on times of day to save on water and then there would be a storm the next week. We were also advised to save on electricity because of the same reason that was mentioned in the video.
    It is getting confusing actually. Sometimes there's flashfloods and most of the time it is hot.

    Boycott animal agriculture to make the biggest dent in climate change.

    • @simonfong6
      @simonfong6 8 лет назад +1

      From my assumptions I would think that would be closed process compared to burning fossil fuels because the methane that animals emit come from plants that take CO2 out of the air where as in in fossil fuels we are releasing massive amounts without taking any in

    • @Helvetius3
      @Helvetius3 8 лет назад

      Simon Fong It's not just the animals directly. Each cow eats a massive amount of grain and water. that grain requires a lot of resources in the form of fossil fuels and water. As well as many square miles of deforested land to grow it.

      The Blue Farmer Since for the most part people like eating meat the only way we would be able to reduce the consumption of resources I would assume would be alternative meat sources in similar way that we need alternative energy sources,such as insects or lab grown meat. This might change this year though because of the el nino.

      +Strohalm4Me Isn't the el nino the effect of global warming?

    • @Strohalm4Me
      @Strohalm4Me 8 лет назад +1

      No, the el nino happens when the upwelling of cold deep ocean water at the west coast of south america stops so that the surface water becomes much warmer. This has effects on the global weather. But El Nino has nothing to do with the global warming. It is a naturally occuring phenomenon that normally about every 5 years. But it is barely understood so far, we cannot acurately predict it. But we know it has been occuring for a looooong time, long before the start of the global warming.

    One thing fixes this. Nuclear energy.
    Nuclear is zero carbon, but is a high density source of power, so minimal land use, and low cost. It also produces power 24/7, not requiring sunny or windy days. New Gen IV nuclear has even more potential.
    Hopefully people will soon get over their fears of nuclear, get educated and start working toward a real solution soon. Oil and gas companies get richer the longer it takes us to find a solution, and when you do the math, solar and wind won't do it, so they love it.

    So you blame all these things on climate change (sounds to me like MAYBE half of them are actually due to climate change) then you advocate action that will, in the best case scenario, have no perceptible impact on climate change but WILL have devastating effects on economies worldwide damaging the quality of life of millions if not billions.

    • @AogNubJoshh
      @AogNubJoshh 8 лет назад +33

      +shivore Yeh, the USA spends $600 billion a year on military, directly damaging the quality of life of millions. If it spent even a fraction of that on green energy, fewer people would die and the world would be a cleaner place.Killing people and greedy capitalism causes economic damage, not investment in technology and renewables.
      Also, it's not just about climate change. It's about removing pollutants and our reliance upon non-renewals, which are very quickly running out. By investing in green technology, we make the world a better place.

    • @Ancor3

    • @dwood2001
      @dwood2001 8 лет назад +3

      +shivore Only one of the issues raised by this video is not well-evidenced -- the increase in storms. However, that's simply an issue of a lack of available data (so far). There are obvious mechanisms through which climate change might cause that, we just need the data to prove it. Everything else is supported in the scientific literature.
      As for the cost, it's been shown that in the long term, allowing climate change to continue will cost more. So not being willing to pay for these changes is nothing but short-term thinking. There are also many actions we can take that are virtually free. The main reason we don't take them is due to a lack of political will -- skeptics have distracted people from the science with false claims.

    • @Suedocode
      @Suedocode 8 лет назад +2

      +shivore Let's ignore the part where you say changing climates isn't actually climate change. They basically said "There's this big problem, and we can mitigate damage with action. More action is more mitigation, but it's also more expensive." Mentioning this issue somehow leads you to lose respect for this channel? This statement about action and cost is redundantly true for just about _all_ problems and their solutions. How is this any different?

We’re also seeing warmer winters, less snow, but bigger individual storms producing snow like nor’easters, we now have winters regularly hitting 70 degrees, rarely getting below 10 degrees anymore, especially this past winter, no snow at all, but lots of rain and warm temperatures. Summers are getting much hotter, typically getting 20 90+ days per year, now we are getting over 35 and instead of a heat wave or 2 lasting 3 days, (here in NJ a heat wave is 3 90+ days in a row) we are now getting 4-6 heat waves lasting over 5-7 days now. We rarely got days over 95 let alone 100, now every summer almost, temperatures easily surpassing 100 several times a year. We’re are getting more rainfall and more flooding with feet of rain than when Summer hits, the heat and humidity is unreal, easily surpassing 120 heat index and causing drought type conditions.
    Global Warming is real, people deny it, idk why, but we need to stop it, yes Earths climate has always changed, but never this bad or this fast.

    I'm from Indonesia. When I was 4 (year 2012) the rain season and dry season is stable, I mean after dry season there is 6 month per rain season then there is 6 month per dry season then the season cycle happen again again and again, till it's 2014 or 2015, WE CANT NOW WHEN DOES IT CHANGE THERE IS SOMETIME RAIN SEASON ONLY FOR 20 DAY, THAT IS ANNOYING MY LIFE. Also why there is tornado in Indonesia now, climate change did this

    While not everyone may agree in climate change, I think that we all can agree in planet change.
    Temperature change of 1 or 2 degrees does not seem significant, but look at the destruction of our natural landscapes, the water shortages, the continued plight of endangered species, etc. There is no denying that these are more real and visible. Perhaps instead of debating over climate change because it has become so politicized, we should all work together to save our planet.

    I have an idea to reduce car pollution. (I'm only a kid, no one listens) How about we just use bikes! I mean, they are way cheaper, easily accsesible. I mean yeah, if you are going somewhere far but does it matter? You will have stronger legs and you will see more sights. Baggage problem? attach a little cart. Rain? Take an umbrella and attach it. Plus, one car could be melted into multiple bikes. Car wheels cut up into more wheels, fudge electric cars, bikes are the past, present and future.

    • @Bee_Healthier
      @Bee_Healthier 5 лет назад

      Your absolutely right, eletric bikes are easy to maintain and some schwalbe tires can last years and go through glass, I ride my bike instead of drive, I hate cars. Keep spreading the cycling message, bicycles are indeed the future.

    I'm in South Australia. Summer here is Hot but not usually hot until December. However this year, the heat started in October and we've had record temps just about every day since. This is going to put massive pressure on our power generation system as everyone needs to use the air conditioners much longer. On top of that El Nino kicks in again so that means more droughts, and as usual fierce bushfires and firestorms will be of threat once again.

      We cannot stop China, so even if the world stopped emitting, and China did, we would still be fucked. Let's not regulate what WĒ put out into the air. If you really care, maybe try and talk to the Chinese if you don't want anything. At all.

It helps us realize that these horrible things can and are happening to real people literally all around the world. Thank You Minute Earth for sharing your stories and helping us realize that this is a human problem and not simply a political one.
