it is a bs statement... yes gdp was up, yes co2 emissions was down (i assume). thing is that gdp was up because the central bank and government printed way more money, on paper you have higher gdp but not measured in wealth growth. co2 is down because the same government shuts down companies that emit it and rely on countries like India to produce the same goods that require co2 emissions, but it is not done in their own country, so problem solved!
Economic growth was already not necessarily coupled with wellness, joy, equity or sustainability. Transitive property (sort of). Let's bury useless proxies and focus on how to get the relevant properties with fewer emissions :)
Until all the materials we use have an organic (plant, fungus, or bacteria grown) alternative, or can be recycled fully, the economy will never be truly decoupled from the environment. It's still cause for celebration that we can have growth without immediate growth in emissions, but some level of degrowth should still be the goal (and with degrowth I also mean more efficient systems that provide people with a good standard of living without less economic growth).
It's a collective effort. I invested hard-earned money into solar self-consumption, lowered heating to 18 degrees C in winter, reusing energy when applicable and so on. I repair my electronics or keep them as safe as I can when I can't repair them. Being careful with your possessions and accepting to give away a bit of your own comfort will be part of making the transition to 0 degree change in the future
I can't wait for the continuation of what we can do to make things better. One topic that never gets addressed but should is crypto mining; it has a huge negative impact to our environment and it is unnecessary. They are already better alternatives.

Apple is actively sabotaging repairs by professional repair shops. It's not the complicated design that makes Apple gear irreparable, it was designed to be that way.

Australia is also being hit hard by climate change it is late autumn now and it still has not rained for over 18 months. its late autumn but it still feels like summer aka 40 degree plus heat.
I love the fact that in this there's a clear contrast from the last climate change video where things seemed a little bleak. But this shows everyone that we as humans are able to come together and fight for our planet!

It's a great sentiment but the people who need to care, don't and those that do care don't have an impact. 70% of the world's emissions come from about 100 companies and they are more concerned with short term profits than caring about the world they won't have to live in. It took 10 years for politicians to do basically nothing...how long will it take for them to actually do something?

Yea except roughly 100 corporations produce the vast majority of greenhouse gases and pollution. I hate being a doomer but it's a realistic viewpoint, our modern way of life is literally unsustainable. Canada is already on the right steps towards this. Voting is already underway and heavily supported already to ban all practices of planned obsolescence within Canada, along with a basic right to repair anything and everything without fear of voided warranties
Many small steps can lead to changes.. shop second hand wherever possible, donate to environment organizations either in terms of money or time, cook with seasonal ingredients, save power, take public transport if possible, run errands on weekends with a bicycle particularly in the US, try to buy produce without plastic packaging, use rechargeable batteries, compost your waste if there is space, setup a grey wastewater filtration system and recharge groundwater, grow veggies at home, try to fix broken things patiently to the best of your ability, try drying clothes without using a dryer.. scale this to say your entire group of friends and family and see the miracle that happens before your eyes.
Im gonna say I disagree entirely. Individual action is basically pointless. 80% of emissions and pollution come from a small handful of organisations ('companies') controlled by known individuals. Political action is what's needed, not this Protestant-hangover individual responsibility bullshit

@@bclh We all do, because we essentially don't have a choice. Oil, for instance, is crucial all along the supply chain. Our energy economy is not something you can just "boycott" like plastic bags. That's why shunting climate action onto individual consumer decisions is so stupid.

@@dillivered As far as I know, gas as a low carbon source is a scam. While it is low in carbon, it emits so much methane (a more potent greenhouse gas) that it makes gas almost as bad as coal. However, I suppose still better than actual coal. I agree with you on the nuclear part. I really hope my country (Germany) will finally reconsider nuclear. Nuclear energy has a majority in the population for the first time in years. In the last survey about this, about 55% of Germans are pro nuclear in _at least_ certain scenarios (like not building more plants, but prolonging the use of our current ones). The tide is turning.

being in college for an environmental science degree feels pretty hopeless sometimes, considering i can't go a day without hearing about climate change. it's hard to plan for the future and be optimistic when there's always a nagging fear of the world ending within your lifetime. thanks for making this video. i needed it, and i'm not the only one
You're not alone, I'm also studying Environmental Science in college and I've realized that we're the ones who have the power to really educate people in a simple way they can understand. It can feel overwhelming sometimes, but I try to take that energy and turn it into motivation for a future worth living in. Env. Eng. who gave a presentation on Carbon Capture and Sequestration at Los Alamos Nat. Lab. in 2004. I was getting supper discouraged myself until about 2010-2012 when I saw these trends already happening and it changed my outlook. Those price drops in Solar and Wind are not going to stop at just being cheaper for new production. Before the end of the decade it will be cheaper to produce new solar and wind then to continue to operate existing fossil fuel plants and that when the acceleration of renewables really takes off from just our new sources to massively shutting down older FF plants. Last year only 16% of new energy generation produced in the USA was fossil fuels (all natural gas) and it's been like that since about 2017 or 2018 (don't remember 1st year off the top of my head that it went above 50%).
Out of curiosity, why did you choose to pursue environmental science? And what's the edge of studying it over other science degrees that can help solving the issue? My background is physics in engineering school (which had environmental science programs too), and I've met some physics/engineering student who switched to environmental science program because they felt physics/engineering was pointless for that endeavour (in their first year of bachelor). I've often argued that a lot of the *technical* solution to climate change (including but not limited to renewable energy) have come from expert scientist/engineers, often *not* with a background from environmental science but from say, electrical engineering, physics, material science, chemistry, etc, that mastered the fundamentals, "the tools" to solve a problem. They just applied their expertise to solve the climate change problem (or often a subset of it). Why do we need more environmental scientist than say, physics/chemists to solve the battery problem?

doesn't take much to convince people I see, half of the video is speculation based on best possible outcomes if everyone, literally EVERYONE gets on board with fixing climate change yesterday. fact is that every major government that promised to uphold the Paris Agreement dragged ass on it, never mind the fact that it was decades too late to start with such miniscule efforts. there is no further plans to expand on reduction of CO2 emissions, unless the current world crisis, along with increased prices on crude oil creates a massive shift in energy production, I can't see a lot of hope for mankind.
I think the key lesson is that even if you fighting for the right thing is futile, we should do it anyway. It's important to remember that many people will still suffer greatly, that countless species will still be lost, that the earth is increasingly deforested and hence its capacity to mitigate warming through biological and secondary geological processes will also continue to be reduced as long as we continue encroachment and pollution of ecosystems. The economic status quo is dying quickly but it still wields a great amount of power. The necessary social changes described are that of dismantling or transformation of capitalism to that of a stable circular economy without the usual anarchy of the market and overproduction or a socialist planned economy that enforces strict quotas on emissions and reigns in rampant excess and frivolous waste.

In my opinion this is one of the best videos on RUclips. Whenever a friend or someone I know that is keen to fight climate change, but they are too depressed about the situation and saying it's already too late, I send them this video. I also watched it several times and every time the end if the video just gives me so much motivation to keep fighting this global crisis to decrease the temperature decrease as best as I / we can.
As someone in GenZ, those points about feeling hopelessness and despair at the future really hits home hard. I honestly can’t remember the last time I wanted to start a family or felt hopeful for the future. Thanks for the inspirational video, Kurzgesagt.
Its almost as if theres a group of people trying to make sure you feel this way, that think you should own nothing, and basically be a slave. Look up the World Economic Forum. See how they are all still buying beachfront property while telling you the sea levels are rising. They don't want you having kids, they want you easily controllable.
I promise I don’t want to dismiss your perspective. In fact, my intention is to add a comparative perspective and maybe even cross examine. By now, I’m sure any and every internet junkie has seen something related to this, but Millennials are very often hit with something I’d like to refer to as a secondary doom existential crisis. Essentially, we began our lives extremely optimistic, albeit much still influenced by Boomers and even the Silent Generation (my parents are boomers and my grandparents were silent genners). We watched progress march on before us as technology, which was already in a state of exponential growth, explode toward new horizons. Then slowly, the veil became lifted for many of us. Though our technology has improved, our society had not. We are all still the same third chimpanzees who “conquered” the earth. Our species overall seems to be guilty of another term I personally refer to as “teenage immortality,” which, although I find this mostly implicit, is the concept of the mentality in many youths that they are damn near invincible. This, however, made a gross marginal shift with Millennials, right about the time most of us started going to college. Existential and a sense of impending doom set in and much of the future began to seem entirely hopeless. Then, queue GenZ, the last generation with a spark of hope. This doesn’t whatsoever mean that any of this generation had any hope, but that the older of the generation may still have had it, if they don’t still somewhat have it, but faced with current events, hope feels like a fever dream at best. I don’t blame anyone in this generation for their exceptional fatalism nor being annoyed by any and all previous generations. We are at a crossroads as a species and, furthermore, a society. If we don’t veer left, the results WILL be cataclysmic. I still hope for the best but definitely expect the worst. So I 100% agree. Seeing something positive for a change is very pleasant.
To all the scientists, activists, and unsung heroes, who are trying their hardest to invent solutions and bring new technology to fight climate change, we are extremely greatful to you all.

i love that this is addressing the hopelessness many of us feel around climate change. For so long, scientists have been trying to scare people into understanding the extent of the problem -- and now that many people believe it, we want to know how to help fix it.
We can't fix nature and climate as a whole. But, we can reduce our part on waste, usages and our way of living. That's like asking to fix a tornado or put a band aid on a volcano. Mother nature will always win and have it her way, in the end. We live in it and should always respect it. That's just how I see it.
Scientists aren't trying to "scare" people into believing anything. They're informing people about something that is naturally terrifying. Emphasizing the potential dangers might seem like they're scaring people into believing this, but scientists are smart enough to know that fear-mongering is not the way to go about spreading information.

I'm a chemical engineer student who started studying with the motivation to help the climate crisis. At times I feel like maybe I'm too late, there is nothing I can do and I get anxious. Your Airpods are too dirty that even our tools cannot fix? You'll get a new pair. Like, the amount of waste this produces is insane.
Their shitty "we use older, less efficient peripherals on purpose so you can't share with other people" strategy is banned in the EU starting this year, so hopefully that helps at least a little. Apple really only has that intense hold on US consumers
Fortunately, governments are increasingly interested in right to repair now and are starting to place pressure on Apple (and other companies) to make their devices more repairable!
As a biologist who is studying in order to work in conservation, I'm completely positive that humanity will overcome climate change. What I fear is just how many things we are going to lose on our way there. Even if the rate of extinction decreases over time, a loss is a loss: that particular species has disappeared forever. If a new invasive species reaches a new ecosystem, it is then incredibly difficult to revert invasion and that particular ecosystem is probably changed forever. Even if we recover a declining population, the genetic diversity losses of that species will remain. Of course, I want to be hopeful and that's exactly why I'm studying: to fight against these things and many others. But I think it's extremely important to remind people that the world after climate change will never be the same as the world before it. We may be able to avoid the worst scenario, but some changes will stay with us forever. And that's exactly why the time to act and make our voices heard is now. Humanty has a future, let's not rob other species of their right to share it with us.
And that's just the animals. I understand that extinction is a concern for species of animals other than us in this upcoming mess, but we *are* still going to suffer losses of human life that we could have prevented had we acted sooner. I do appreciate how hopeful this is, really I needed that information that we *are* making some progress on this one. It's kind of a shame that the thing that finally makes this change is how profitable it is. That just shows how bad we are.
That's my fear too. Land use for farming, urbanization, energy etc. is the main driver for bio-diversity loss and largely irreverisable. We should think about energy-density (that's the main downside to solar imo) and increase productivity for farming (land sparing vs sharing) and decrease our consumption of animal proteins. The trend in farming is extensivation (sharing) and that's not the way to go imo. It's a complicated and counter-intuitive thing, as we are really used to seeing the old cultivated farming landscapes as 'true' nature and bio-diverse. How much I like them and landscapes ARE important, but sparing high quality nature like rainforest, swamps and coral reefs are key to keeping the planet going. But nonetheless I really love this video. There are unmistakenly some positive trends. This story should be told more often, especially by the green / social political parties. I think that would help a lot. We need a positive silver lining to unite people and make stuff happen.
I think the reason there was so much panic 10 years ago is because it was hard to put trust on the speed at which technology could be improved. But think about how far we've come over the last decade, and imagine how much further technology will come over the next decade. We can make it out of this!
@Bingo I actually kind of agree with that. For example, with the population 'crisis' a few decades back, scientists were worried about overpopulation. But its quite hard to see 10 years into the future due to how rapid humanity actually progresses

And I don’t think people are actively trying to move here considering how expensive it is yet in the city I live in they literally have to build apartments in parking lots behind grocery stores because there is no room

Fresh water supply is arguably the most important factor, because that's what allows us to upkeep our food supply. So let's start there. Around the world, water levels in fresh water lakes have been decreasing due to overuse and increased evaporation. And due to its use in farming crops, water in aquifers is already being consumed much faster than nature can replenish it. So yes our food supply is currently increasing, but it's increasing at the cost of our water supply. The aquifers will run out, and when they do, so will our food. Unless we build insane amounts of energy intensive water desalination plants, our population will destroy us. The estimated carrying capacity of earth is 11B people. We're already 73% of the way there, which is more than enough to stress an ecosystem.

This is the first time I've heard the term weaponized hopelessness. It struck me so hard, im pretty young and grew up being told how bad the future would be and how there was nothing we could do. Hearing about how hopelessness and apathy are basically a prison to keep you inactive made me realize how my own run down view of the future was keeping me from acting and doing anything in my life. I was basically told that hope was a cruel thing to give to someone in a hopeless situation, but this showed me why hope is important.
these propaganda tactics have been used before by the tobacco industry back in the day. The same stages: "tobacco isn't bad, is actually healthy" and you watch in TV commercial doctors prescribing cigs to sick people. Really sociopathic. Then when the science determines is really harmful the lobby goes for the "tobacco may not be healthy, but is not that bad". Then the science and the public outrage changes the narrative to "tobacco may be harmful for your health, but it doesn't matter"... in the final stages of publicity they weren't even mentioning the tobacco, just brand and a nice slogan or catchy jingle. Until the government (not out of their good hearts, more like pushed by public outcries) forced the industry to stop promoting it and put warning and graphics images on the products. The master minds behind those media narrative, propaganda stunts that created confusion, promote doubt, dillute scientific consensus and information obfuscation among the public were helped by a bunch of greedy scientists that united with conservative think-tanks to spread the misinformation. Not only with tobacco, but also with acid rain, DDT, ozone layer holes denial and they are very active on global warmng since the past century. Read (or watch if you don't like to read books) about *Merchants of Doubt* to know about those evil fuckers.

There is something you can do every day that will help. You see when you decide to buy anything you're sending a signal that says, "I like this thing please make for of it/them". For example, I've started buying vegetarian sausages, they're a bit more expensive than the sausages I used to buy but I wanted to send that signal, "I want you to make more of these sausages." And, of course, I've stopped telling the people making pork sausages I want them. Economists would say the demand for pork sausages has gone down (so producers will make less of them) and the demand for veggie sausages has gone up (so producers will make more of them instead). The better decisions we make like this mean that we, between us, have the power to start changing the world and our future. There's always something we can do, always!

Honestly, I've been dealing with "doom-ism" for the last few years. Everything I've seen in the news, online, and even on social media has been very doom and gloom centered. I'm currently watching this video at 11:30 pm, and it has given me hope for the future again. I don't have any ideas that are particularly viable (at least in my opinion) but I wish to help in any way I can. Thank you Kurzgesagt for giving me hope for the future once again.
don't be anti nuclear power, that's my best advice, it has 0 carbon emissions, and the waste it produces we can just eject into space if it gets bad enough, which btw the waste it produces is SOOOO SMALL compared to windmills, those damn things use ALOT of fossil fuels to make, and when they break down, even more fossil fuels to fix them, or break them down and scrap em.
You don't have to do big things; I got me a scooter for my daily commute, reducing my fuel use fairly significantly. It's also a lot of fun, and gets me around town for probably more than a week on a single gallon of fuel.
I decided not to have kids because i don't want to put them on a half destroyed world. Honestly this video has not changed anything for me. I recently graduated with a degree in environmental policy, focusing on ecosystems and wildlife management. I can't even find a job that doesn't involve helping corporations skurt around regulations or justifying flattening habitats for developers. All that is to say that I have fallen into the doomer mindset. This video is actually incredibly helpful to alleviate some of my most existential excuses to give up. That said, I would really love to see a video delineating the *types* of environmentalism. Of course, global temperatures are the ultimate factor in environmental health - but even if we brought emissions down to pre-industrial levels, the environment would still be suffering greatly. Deforestation, overfishing, loss of wetlands, invasive out-competition, etc. habitat loss are all distinct environmental issues that need to be addressed separate from emissions. As a human, I value the survival of human society. But I have personally always been more concerned with the preservation of wildlife and their habitats. After all, can we really say that we're successful if we've replaced our natural world with an artificially engineered one? I don't want to live in white chrome world devoid of the forms of life we evolved beside.
Yea, it's tough to acknowledge that what is best for the environment is not what is best for Humans. Ironically, that the best thing for the environment is.. the extinction of humans as we have been parasitic to the natural world :(. I hope the sentiment of those who proceed us acknowledge that and can come to some type of symbiotic relationship with the environment though! I'm optimistic for the positive change younger generations will bring, it will probably require some more major weather events to provide a wake up call to people.

Doom mindset rly has a chokehold on us bc we understand the severity more intimately than most and we also understand how difficult it really is to get industry to implement change (without skirting around and finding loopholes like u said) I hope my mind is changed in the future but for now I do feel pretty hopeless. I went to school for product/industrial design with the hopes of combining my passion for sustainability into everyday life, only to find out after graduation most major companies had no intention of changing. To them sustainable = more expensive and it was like trying to reason with a brick wall. Same here. Definitely wasn't expecting it. I guess I've been way more worried about it than I realized. I suppose it's hard to be hopeful when humanity's looming destruction is constantly in the back of your mind. Knowing that there is progress being made and it's not hopeless was something I needed to hear.
This actually made me feel a bit better because especially living paycheck to paycheck I often end up having to buy cheaper products or less food or whatever and it all adds up to more emissions so that makes me feel like shit but I try to make my nicer products last longer but its still just hard so it's nice to think that the efforts I have put in over the years at least were a part of the culture that has made things a little better. Sometimes it really is hard to care when Im just some 20 year old in kansas like what can I do but yknow we do what we can

As an American millennial, I've felt guilty about being a parent pretty often because of the state of the not just the world by my country as well. I do what I can to be better on my own microscale, including voting for policies that impart positive change, it's just very hard most days to say the future looks positive. It's good to see there are indicators that we can improve our situation, I guess maybe the depression I feel is related to the anger I have against the previous generations who are our current politicians. Thank you for this video. I really do hope things get better. I haven't given up on hope yet.

I really appreciated this video - luckily, I never quite fell into the "it's hopeless" phase, but this video definitely turned some debilitating fear into hope and appreciation for the brilliant and enthusiastic people fighting against climate change.
Join us, if you haven't already. It is empowering and liberating. There are meaningful things that can be done by each person, just need to keep your eyes open for opportunities. Such actions need not take inordinate amounts of effort or take you outside of your comfort zone.
global warming has given me existensial dread since i was 12 when i was first taught about it and that fear inspired me to pursue a career in environmental engineering to make even the smallest dent in helping the cause.
We humans are sneaky bastards that will survive any disaster even if a big proportion of the population dies. To think the greatest minds on Earth will just lie down and wait for doom is ridiculous.

I think the feeling of hopelessness is understandable when we talk about the political aspects of climate change. It's not that we think humanity as a species is not capable of solving climate change, it's just structurally difficult to pass any climate legislation when the fossil fuel industry has so much influence in government. As for me, I'm pessimistic in the short term but optimistic in the long term. More and more young people who care about this issue will become eligible to vote, and we'll gradually win.
@@johndalton3124 it’s not about cutting your gas emissions to zero in one day, what you can actually do is find ways of reducing your energy demand or alternative sources and cut it down as you are able to.
It's so frustrating to see how the people who have the power to do something don't want to. To feel like the younger generations will pay the ultimate price for something they're not really responsible for. It's hard not to feel hopeless, powerless and frustrated.

People who don't will justify their indifference towards the Earth and the other humans by any means, even by saying that ecologists pollute more than others. Those ecologists who only use tomato soup are just exposing themselves to humiliation by doing that. Attention isn't enough. We have to fight against people who refuse change. Don't think they will change their minds. They won't. For some of them, they decided that we will die here while they'll escape to somewhere else. For others, they says that humanity have endured many disasters while admitting that many people will die. Those people will kill humans and animals to keep their possessions. We have to fight them. Letting them doing whatever they want will cost lives, maybe all lives. Fighting them will cost them their possessions.

In my humanities and social sciences class, our teacher decided to put on a called the video of “Stuff”, it was very dark and sad, but later on it became hopeful and more cheerful. Which made me think there is still hope.

I am a mechanical Engineer with a masters on combustion simulation. I`ve participated on international congresses on combustion, and worked for two years on industrial burners (now moving into the aerospace industry). I've met quite a few people working on combustion who, like me, worry about climate change Of course renewables are the way to go whenever possible, still, on cases where switching away from combustion is still not viable, there is a lot of work being done (and i've been part of this effort) to adapt burners used in industry to be more fuel efficient, less pollutant, and to work with renewable biofuels. In fact, research on renewable fuels is an extremely hot topic, and, when i left the burner industry, the interest in using biofuels produced from plants/agricultural waste (thus way less polutant) was very real. I sincerely believe it will be the norm in the next few years. There is still a lot of work to be done, but even with such a weak response from governments, many workers in the industry are doing their best to provide cost-effective sollutions for this problem, so that being green becomes not only a matter of being concious about climate change, but a matter of profitability. Sadly the damage to the environment is inevitable, but we can still keep reducing the damage as long as we keep working on solutions.
I'm actually super down for biofuels, anything really to promote healthy alternatives to burning gasoline. I started burning ethanol on an E85 tune in my GT86 this past month, and not only is my car running better, it's actually getting better mileage. Fingers crossed that we'll have a stable and less damaging fuel source in the near future for when I finish my dad's Torino rebuild.

Current scenario in India: Increasing prices on petrol & diesel, promoting CNG and sugarcane based biofuel, focus on solar and wind projects.... These will help a lot in curbing emissions. I have myself started using cycle to go places that are nearby instead of my bike. This has reduced my petrol expenditures by around 33%. It's light on the pocket as well as the environment.
This video really has great meaning and substance, especially today, when our country is also suffering from a lot of natural problems. We have big problems with deforestation, many people cut down trees every time to build new houses, shopping centres and entertainment complexes in their place, without thinking about animals, plants and their lives. By destroying forests, we destroy our health, because the oxygen content in the air decreases. We also breathe dirt through car exhaust gases, polluting our lungs. Recently, we have seen that there may be a high risk of global warming, as temperatures have been around 40 degrees every day in summer. As a result of the war, we have polluted rivers, soil and fields, many flooded towns and villages, numerous fires, transport and combat emissions.😔
As a scientist I have always tried to maintain a hopeful and positive “solution-focused” viewpoint, but I must admit, with my first child on the way I had started to slip into a more “doom-and-gloom” situation and was worrying about all the things pointed out here. As a renewable energies engineer now working as a conservation and wildlife biologist I can't express how much we need videos like this. There are so many great and promising projects going on and we should focus in them instead of falling in this doomist apathy. Not only for climate change but also for biodiversity lost and extinction (wich are actually very closely linked). Kurzgesagts should also make a video of the recent "Rewilding" efforts too. Rewilding is a new approach to conservation to actively restore and improve lost or degraded ecosistems. It focuses a lot in the reintroduction of lost "keystone species" that play a disproportionate rol in the health of the hole sistem. As a result, the biodiversity, productivity, carbon sequestration and resilience of the ecosistem multiplies to levels that we often even lost from our collective memory. There are plenty of degraded and defaunated lands in the world that could become wild, rich and wonderful sanctuaries again. Rewilding Europe, Rewilding Argentina and several other amazing reintroduction projects are working in that direction while also helping local cultures and economies.

Why limit your life when it has absolutely no effect on anything in practice? If anyone wants to do their part, they should put pressure on the big corporations etc. to stop polluting our planet. Eating vegetables and recycling your trash is all fine and good but even if all the regular people of this world did it it would have very little effect, I'm afraid :(

Then rapid cooling from the massive clouds forming all over the planet, most likely leading to an ice age ironically. You can think of it as our planet being at equilibrium right now, as a result of small cycles of heating/cooling over thousands of years. Things changed, but they always came back before. Now we are interfering. It’s all theoretical, the main point to focus on is we are directly involved. To assume we can’t affect the planet is an odd level of arrogance, especially if the concept of terraforming is also a known possibility. Of course we can accidentally cause damage.

it is a bs statement... yes gdp was up, yes co2 emissions was down (i assume). thing is that gdp was up because the central bank and government printed way more money, on paper you have higher gdp but not measured in wealth growth. co2 is down because the same government shuts down companies that emit it and rely on countries like India to produce the same goods that require co2 emissions, but it is not done in their own country, so problem solved!
Economic growth was already not necessarily coupled with wellness, joy, equity or sustainability. Transitive property (sort of). Let's bury useless proxies and focus on how to get the relevant properties with fewer emissions :)
Until all the materials we use have an organic (plant, fungus, or bacteria grown) alternative, or can be recycled fully, the economy will never be truly decoupled from the environment. It's still cause for celebration that we can have growth without immediate growth in emissions, but some level of degrowth should still be the goal (and with degrowth I also mean more efficient systems that provide people with a good standard of living without less economic growth).

It's a collective effort. I invested hard-earned money into solar self-consumption, lowered heating to 18 degrees C in winter, reusing energy when applicable and so on. I repair my electronics or keep them as safe as I can when I can't repair them. Being careful with your possessions and accepting to give away a bit of your own comfort will be part of making the transition to 0 degree change in the future

Many small steps can lead to changes.. shop second hand wherever possible, donate to environment organizations either in terms of money or time, cook with seasonal ingredients, save power, take public transport if possible, run errands on weekends with a bicycle particularly in the US, try to buy produce without plastic packaging, use rechargeable batteries, compost your waste if there is space, setup a grey wastewater filtration system and recharge groundwater, grow veggies at home, try to fix broken things patiently to the best of your ability, try drying clothes without using a dryer.. scale this to say your entire group of friends and family and see the miracle that happens before your eyes.

@@dillivered As far as I know, gas as a low carbon source is a scam. While it is low in carbon, it emits so much methane (a more potent greenhouse gas) that it makes gas almost as bad as coal. However, I suppose still better than actual coal. I agree with you on the nuclear part. I really hope my country (Germany) will finally reconsider nuclear. Nuclear energy has a majority in the population for the first time in years. In the last survey about this, about 55% of Germans are pro nuclear in _at least_ certain scenarios (like not building more plants, but prolonging the use of our current ones). The tide is turning.

being in college for an environmental science degree feels pretty hopeless sometimes, considering i can't go a day without hearing about climate change. it's hard to plan for the future and be optimistic when there's always a nagging fear of the world ending within your lifetime.

You're not alone, I'm also studying Environmental Science in college and I've realized that we're the ones who have the power to really educate people in a simple way they can understand. It can feel overwhelming sometimes, but I try to take that energy and turn it into motivation for a future worth living in. Env. Eng. who gave a presentation on Carbon Capture and Sequestration at Los Alamos Nat. Lab. in 2004. I was getting supper discouraged myself until about 2010-2012 when I saw these trends already happening and it changed my outlook. Those price drops in Solar and Wind are not going to stop at just being cheaper for new production. Before the end of the decade it will be cheaper to produce new solar and wind then to continue to operate existing fossil fuel plants and that when the acceleration of renewables really takes off from just our new sources to massively shutting down older FF plants.
Last year only 16% of new energy generation produced in the USA was fossil fuels (all natural gas) and it's been like that since about 2017 or 2018 (don't remember 1st year off the top of my head that it went above 50%).
Out of curiosity, why did you choose to pursue environmental science? And what's the edge of studying it over other science degrees that can help solving the issue? My background is physics in engineering school (which had environmental science programs too), and I've met some physics/engineering student who switched to environmental science program because they felt physics/engineering was pointless for that endeavour (in their first year of bachelor).
I've often argued that a lot of the *technical* solution to climate change (including but not limited to renewable energy) have come from expert scientist/engineers, often *not* with a background from environmental science but from say, electrical engineering, physics, material science, chemistry, etc, that mastered the fundamentals, "the tools" to solve a problem. They just applied their expertise to solve the climate change problem (or often a subset of it). Why do we need more environmental scientist than say, physics/chemists to solve the battery problem?

It's important to remember that many people will still suffer greatly, that countless species will still be lost, that the earth is increasingly deforested and hence its capacity to mitigate warming through biological and secondary geological processes will also continue to be reduced as long as we continue encroachment and pollution of ecosystems. The economic status quo is dying quickly but it still wields a great amount of power. The necessary social changes described are that of dismantling or transformation of capitalism to that of a stable circular economy without the usual anarchy of the market and overproduction or a socialist planned economy that enforces strict quotas on emissions and reigns in rampant excess and frivolous waste.

In my opinion this is one of the best videos on RUclips. Whenever a friend or someone I know that is keen to fight climate change, but they are too depressed about the situation and saying it's already too late, I send them this video. I also watched it several times and every time the end if the video just gives me so much motivation to keep fighting this global crisis to decrease the temperature decrease as best as I / we can.
As someone in GenZ, those points about feeling hopelessness and despair at the future really hits home hard. I honestly can’t remember the last time I wanted to start a family or felt hopeful for the future. Thanks for the inspirational video, Kurzgesagt.

I promise I don’t want to dismiss your perspective. In fact, my intention is to add a comparative perspective and maybe even cross examine. By now, I’m sure any and every internet junkie has seen something related to this, but Millennials are very often hit with something I’d like to refer to as a secondary doom existential crisis.
Essentially, we began our lives extremely optimistic, albeit much still influenced by Boomers and even the Silent Generation (my parents are boomers and my grandparents were silent genners). We watched progress march on before us as technology, which was already in a state of exponential growth, explode toward new horizons. Then slowly, the veil became lifted for many of us. Though our technology has improved, our society had not. We are all still the same third chimpanzees who “conquered” the earth.
Our species overall seems to be guilty of another term I personally refer to as “teenage immortality,” which, although I find this mostly implicit, is the concept of the mentality in many youths that they are damn near invincible. This, however, made a gross marginal shift with Millennials, right about the time most of us started going to college. Existential and a sense of impending doom set in and much of the future began to seem entirely hopeless.
Then, queue GenZ, the last generation with a spark of hope. This doesn’t whatsoever mean that any of this generation had any hope, but that the older of the generation may still have had it, if they don’t still somewhat have it, but faced with current events, hope feels like a fever dream at best. I don’t blame anyone in this generation for their exceptional fatalism nor being annoyed by any and all previous generations.
We are at a crossroads as a species and, furthermore, a society. If we don’t veer left, the results WILL be cataclysmic. I still hope for the best but definitely expect the worst. So I 100% agree. Seeing something positive for a change is very pleasant.

i love that this is addressing the hopelessness many of us feel around climate change. For so long, scientists have been trying to scare people into understanding the extent of the problem -- and now that many people believe it, we want to know how to help fix it.

Mother nature will always win and have it her way, in the end. We live in it and should always respect it. That's just how I see it.

Emphasizing the potential dangers might seem like they're scaring people into believing this, but scientists are smart enough to know that fear-mongering is not the way to go about spreading information.

An increasing lack of global resources could also encourage companies to repair instead of selling more to get broken.
As a biologist who is studying in order to work in conservation, I'm completely positive that humanity will overcome climate change. What I fear is just how many things we are going to lose on our way there. Even if the rate of extinction decreases over time, a loss is a loss: that particular species has disappeared forever. If a new invasive species reaches a new ecosystem, it is then incredibly difficult to revert invasion and that particular ecosystem is probably changed forever. Even if we recover a declining population, the genetic diversity losses of that species will remain.
Of course, I want to be hopeful and that's exactly why I'm studying: to fight against these things and many others. But I think it's extremely important to remind people that the world after climate change will never be the same as the world before it. We may be able to avoid the worst scenario, but some changes will stay with us forever. And that's exactly why the time to act and make our voices heard is now. Humanty has a future, let's not rob other species of their right to share it with us.
And that's just the animals. I understand that extinction is a concern for species of animals other than us in this upcoming mess, but we *are* still going to suffer losses of human life that we could have prevented had we acted sooner. I do appreciate how hopeful this is, really I needed that information that we *are* making some progress on this one. It's kind of a shame that the thing that finally makes this change is how profitable it is. That just shows how bad we are.

That's my fear too. Land use for farming, urbanization, energy etc. is the main driver for bio-diversity loss and largely irreverisable. We should think about energy-density (that's the main downside to solar imo) and increase productivity for farming (land sparing vs sharing) and decrease our consumption of animal proteins. The trend in farming is extensivation (sharing) and that's not the way to go imo. It's a complicated and counter-intuitive thing, as we are really used to seeing the old cultivated farming landscapes as 'true' nature and bio-diverse. How much I like them and landscapes ARE important, but sparing high quality nature like rainforest, swamps and coral reefs are key to keeping the planet going.
But nonetheless I really love this video. There are unmistakenly some positive trends. This story should be told more often, especially by the green / social political parties. I think that would help a lot. We need a positive silver lining to unite people and make stuff happen.
I think the reason there was so much panic 10 years ago is because it was hard to put trust on the speed at which technology could be improved. But think about how far we've come over the last decade, and imagine how much further technology will come over the next decade. We can make it out of this!

Fresh water supply is arguably the most important factor, because that's what allows us to upkeep our food supply. So let's start there.
Around the world, water levels in fresh water lakes have been decreasing due to overuse and increased evaporation.
And due to its use in farming crops, water in aquifers is already being consumed much faster than nature can replenish it.
So yes our food supply is currently increasing, but it's increasing at the cost of our water supply. The aquifers will run out, and when they do, so will our food. Unless we build insane amounts of energy intensive water desalination plants, our population will destroy us.
The estimated carrying capacity of earth is 11B people. We're already 73% of the way there, which is more than enough to stress an ecosystem.
Your video helped not just with how to tackle climate change but general life advice for how to handle problems. Acknowledge the problem as bad but do not lose hope the situation can improve.

This is the first time I've heard the term weaponized hopelessness. It struck me so hard, im pretty young and grew up being told how bad the future would be and how there was nothing we could do. Hearing about how hopelessness and apathy are basically a prison to keep you inactive made me realize how my own run down view of the future was keeping me from acting and doing anything in my life. I was basically told that hope was a cruel thing to give to someone in a hopeless situation, but this showed me why hope is important.
these propaganda tactics have been used before by the tobacco industry back in the day. The same stages: "tobacco isn't bad, is actually healthy" and you watch in TV commercial doctors prescribing cigs to sick people. Really sociopathic. Then when the science determines is really harmful the lobby goes for the "tobacco may not be healthy, but is not that bad". Then the science and the public outrage changes the narrative to "tobacco may be harmful for your health, but it doesn't matter"... in the final stages of publicity they weren't even mentioning the tobacco, just brand and a nice slogan or catchy jingle. Until the government (not out of their good hearts, more like pushed by public outcries) forced the industry to stop promoting it and put warning and graphics images on the products.
The master minds behind those media narrative, propaganda stunts that created confusion, promote doubt, dillute scientific consensus and information obfuscation among the public were helped by a bunch of greedy scientists that united with conservative think-tanks to spread the misinformation. Not only with tobacco, but also with acid rain, DDT, ozone layer holes denial and they are very active on global warmng since the past century.
Read (or watch if you don't like to read books) about *Merchants of Doubt* to know about those evil fuckers.

There is something you can do every day that will help. You see when you decide to buy anything you're sending a signal that says, "I like this thing please make for of it/them". For example, I've started buying vegetarian sausages, they're a bit more expensive than the sausages I used to buy but I wanted to send that signal, "I want you to make more of these sausages." And, of course, I've stopped telling the people making pork sausages I want them. Economists would say the demand for pork sausages has gone down (so producers will make less of them) and the demand for veggie sausages has gone up (so producers will make more of them instead). Honestly, I've been dealing with "doom-ism" for the last few years. Everything I've seen in the news, online, and even on social media has been very doom and gloom centered. I'm currently watching this video at 11:30 pm, and it has given me hope for the future again. I don't have any ideas that are particularly viable (at least in my opinion) but I wish to help in any way I can. Thank you Kurzgesagt for giving me hope for the future once again.
don't be anti nuclear power, that's my best advice, it has 0 carbon emissions, and the waste it produces we can just eject into space if it gets bad enough, which btw the waste it produces is SOOOO SMALL compared to windmills, those damn things use ALOT of fossil fuels to make, and when they break down, even more fossil fuels to fix them, or break them down and scrap em.
You don't have to do big things; I got me a scooter for my daily commute, reducing my fuel use fairly significantly. It's also a lot of fun, and gets me around town for probably more than a week on a single gallon of fuel.
I decided not to have kids because i don't want to put them on a half destroyed world. Honestly this video has not changed anything for me. Its a very positive video but working for government in project development i see how were still too conservative when its about renewable energy and circulair economy.

I recently graduated with a degree in environmental policy, focusing on ecosystems and wildlife management. I can't even find a job that doesn't involve helping corporations skurt around regulations or justifying flattening habitats for developers. All that is to say that I have fallen into the doomer mindset.
This video is actually incredibly helpful to alleviate some of my most existential excuses to give up. That said, I would really love to see a video delineating the *types* of environmentalism. Of course, global temperatures are the ultimate factor in environmental health - but even if we brought emissions down to pre-industrial levels, the environment would still be suffering greatly. Deforestation, overfishing, loss of wetlands, invasive out-competition, etc. habitat loss are all distinct environmental issues that need to be addressed separate from emissions.
As a human, I value the survival of human society. But I have personally always been more concerned with the preservation of wildlife and their habitats. After all, can we really say that we're successful if we've replaced our natural world with an artificially engineered one? I don't want to live in white chrome world devoid of the forms of life we evolved beside.
Yea, it's tough to acknowledge that what is best for the environment is not what is best for Humans. Ironically, that the best thing for the environment is.. the extinction of humans as we have been parasitic to the natural world :(. I hope the sentiment of those who proceed us acknowledge that and can come to some type of symbiotic relationship with the environment though! I'm optimistic for the positive change younger generations will bring, it will probably require some more major weather events to provide a wake up call to people.

Doom mindset rly has a chokehold on us bc we understand the severity more intimately than most and we also understand how difficult it really is to get industry to implement change (without skirting around and finding loopholes like u said)

They briefly mentioned that we need better infrastructure and better cities, but I'd love a full video talking about what sustainable city planning actually looks like. I went to school for product/industrial design with the hopes of combining my passion for sustainability into everyday life, only to find out after graduation most major companies had no intention of changing. To them sustainable = more expensive and it was like trying to reason with a brick wall. Same here. Definitely wasn't expecting it. I guess I've been way more worried about it than I realized. I suppose it's hard to be hopeful when humanity's looming destruction is constantly in the back of your mind. Knowing that there is progress being made and it's not hopeless was something I needed to hear.
This actually made me feel a bit better because especially living paycheck to paycheck I often end up having to buy cheaper products or less food or whatever and it all adds up to more emissions so that makes me feel like shit but I try to make my nicer products last longer but its still just hard so it's nice to think that the efforts I have put in over the years at least were a part of the culture that has made things a little better. As an American millennial, I've felt guilty about being a parent pretty often because of the state of the not just the world by my country as well. I do what I can to be better on my own microscale, including voting for policies that impart positive change, it's just very hard most days to say the future looks positive. It's good to see there are indicators that we can improve our situation, I guess maybe the depression I feel is related to the anger I have against the previous generations who are our current politicians.

I really appreciated this video - luckily, I never quite fell into the "it's hopeless" phase, but this video definitely turned some debilitating fear into hope and appreciation for the brilliant and enthusiastic people fighting against climate change.

global warming has given me existensial dread since i was 12 when i was first taught about it and that fear inspired me to pursue a career in environmental engineering to make even the smallest dent in helping the cause.
We humans are sneaky bastards that will survive any disaster even if a big proportion of the population dies. To think the greatest minds on Earth will just lie down and wait for doom is ridiculous.

I think the feeling of hopelessness is understandable when we talk about the political aspects of climate change. It's not that we think humanity as a species is not capable of solving climate change, it's just structurally difficult to pass any climate legislation when the fossil fuel industry has so much influence in government. As for me, I'm pessimistic in the short term but optimistic in the long term. More and more young people who care about this issue will become eligible to vote, and we'll gradually win.

It's so frustrating to see how the people who have the power to do something don't want to. To feel like the younger generations will pay the ultimate price for something they're not really responsible for. It's hard not to feel hopeless, powerless and frustrated.

In my humanities and social sciences class, our teacher decided to put on a called the video of “Stuff”, it was very dark and sad, but later on it became hopeful and more cheerful. Which made me think there is still hope.

I am a mechanical Engineer with a masters on combustion simulation. I`ve participated on international congresses on combustion, and worked for two years on industrial burners (now moving into the aerospace industry). I've met quite a few people working on combustion who, like me, worry about climate change
Of course renewables are the way to go whenever possible, still, on cases where switching away from combustion is still not viable, there is a lot of work being done (and i've been part of this effort) to adapt burners used in industry to be more fuel efficient, less pollutant, and to work with renewable biofuels. In fact, research on renewable fuels is an extremely hot topic, and, when i left the burner industry, the interest in using biofuels produced from plants/agricultural waste (thus way less polutant) was very real. I sincerely believe it will be the norm in the next few years.
There is still a lot of work to be done, but even with such a weak response from governments, many workers in the industry are doing their best to provide cost-effective sollutions for this problem, so that being green becomes not only a matter of being concious about climate change, but a matter of profitability. Sadly the damage to the environment is inevitable, but we can still keep reducing the damage as long as we keep working on solutions.
I'm actually super down for biofuels, anything really to promote healthy alternatives to burning gasoline. I started burning ethanol on an E85 tune in my GT86 this past month, and not only is my car running better, it's actually getting better mileage. Fingers crossed that we'll have a stable and less damaging fuel source in the near future for when I finish my dad's Torino rebuild.

Current scenario in India: Increasing prices on petrol & diesel, promoting CNG and sugarcane based biofuel, focus on solar and wind projects.... These will help a lot in curbing emissions. I have myself started using cycle to go places that are nearby instead of my bike. This has reduced my petrol expenditures by around 33%. It's light on the pocket as well as the environment.

This video really has great meaning and substance, especially today, when our country is also suffering from a lot of natural problems. We have big problems with deforestation, many people cut down trees every time to build new houses, shopping centres and entertainment complexes in their place, without thinking about animals, plants and their lives. By destroying forests, we destroy our health, because the oxygen content in the air decreases. We also breathe dirt through car exhaust gases, polluting our lungs. Recently, we have seen that there may be a high risk of global warming, as temperatures have been around 40 degrees every day in summer. As a result of the war, we have polluted rivers, soil and fields, many flooded towns and villages, numerous fires, transport and combat emissions.😔
As a scientist I have always tried to maintain a hopeful and positive “solution-focused” viewpoint, but I must admit, with my first child on the way I had started to slip into a more “doom-and-gloom” situation and was worrying about all the things pointed out here. Thank you for helping steer me back to positivity!

As a renewable energies engineer now working as a conservation and wildlife biologist I can't express how much we need videos like this. There are so many great and promising projects going on and we should focus in them instead of falling in this doomist apathy. Not only for climate change but also for biodiversity lost and extinction (wich are actually very closely linked). Kurzgesagts should also make a video of the recent "Rewilding" efforts too. Rewilding is a new approach to conservation to actively restore and improve lost or degraded ecosistems. It focuses a lot in the reintroduction of lost "keystone species" that play a disproportionate rol in the health of the hole sistem. As a result, the biodiversity, productivity, carbon sequestration and resilience of the ecosistem multiplies to levels that we often even lost from our collective memory. There are plenty of degraded and defaunated lands in the world that could become wild, rich and wonderful sanctuaries again. Rewilding Europe, Rewilding Argentina and several other amazing reintroduction projects are working in that direction while also helping local cultures and economies.
I’m an environmental scientist too, albeit a relatively new one. It’s great to hear such positivity from a peer!

Switching from gas based heating to electric helps. Switching a electric heat pump helps even more. Businesses didn't start going green because they wanted to, they're following consumer demand/ consumers' money. Literally, this video was about incremental changes adding up to keep the worst scenarios from happening. Did you even watch it?

Why limit your life when it has absolutely no effect on anything in practice? If anyone wants to do their part, they should put pressure on the big corporations etc. to stop polluting our planet. Eating vegetables and recycling your trash is all fine and good but even if all the regular people of this world did it it would have very little effect, I'm afraid :(

At first I thought it was hopeless, that humanity wasn't doing anything. After watching this video I realized its not as hopeless as I thought, now we still need to take ALOT more action, but knowing Im not alone really helps. God bless all those wonderful, wonderful people who are taking action to save our planet right now. Earth depends on us and we have a choice. Take it or leave it.
we can slow it down but the climate has been changing for billions of years with out humans so I would imagine it will continue this pattern of heating then cooling. which is why we should be talking about either how to survive it or how to teraform earth.
It's not following the regular pattern it has for the last several million years. It should be getting colder.
Instead it's getting rapidly warmer at an unprecedented pace.

Pedantic, but as Carlin said, it's not Earth that's in trouble. We are. The earth has been through recurring ice ages, geomagnetic reversal of the poles, solar flares, millions of years of bombardment from meteors, worldwide floods, worldwide fires, cosmic rays... and it's still spinning around just fine. No matter what we do, we aren't going to perturb the planet and likely not even kill off all life. *Us humans* are in trouble, not the planet.
@@jayknight139What do you think causes the cycles of heating and cooling on the planet? They don’t come out of thin air. The planet doesn’t have a thermostat. It’s the greenhouse gas levels fluctuating naturally over time, and we are now interfering with them. Making a lot more, to be specific.
Basically, they would cause lots of heating, which would free up lots of water currently locked in ice. Then rapid cooling from the massive clouds forming all over the planet, most likely leading to an ice age ironically.
You can think of it as our planet being at equilibrium right now, as a result of small cycles of heating/cooling over thousands of years. Things changed, but they always came back before. Now we are interfering.
It’s all theoretical, the main point to focus on is we are directly involved. To assume we can’t affect the planet is an odd level of arrogance, especially if the concept of terraforming is also a known possibility. Of course we can accidentally cause damage.

I remember being practically beat over the head with the whole "carbon footprint" stuff and how it was the fault of every single individual equally. Imagine being a 6 year old kid being told that you're killing the planet by keeping the lights on a little too long.
And the "carbon footprint" narative was actually funded by the fossil fuel industry to shift the blame away from themselves

Exactly. I'm fed up with people griping about product packaging in plastic baggies or plastic netting...gripe at the people packaging things that way! Not our (the general public's) doing.
It's not a structural failure. It's because you, a child barely old enough to bike to school, are taking 15 minutes showers instead of the the minimal 7.
