    • @sevatarlives185
      @sevatarlives185 3 года назад +17

      I go back and forth on that issue. On the one hand yes old-style Terminators did look oddly proportioned with the arms buuut to give them their due I think they were trying to make them look hunched forward under the weight of the exo-armour. In any case, we now have better options in the form of Cataphractii and Tartaros armour, or indeed the conversion up here to rehabilitate the poor old Indomitus.

    • @wolfgangrecordings
      @wolfgangrecordings 3 года назад +13

      i've always found the stick-thin thighs more of an eyesore than the hunched stance tbh, although both are equally impossible in terms of a human (or even transhuman) physique. nice to see that the primaris range has more realistic proportions overall anyway, it sets a good precedent for terminators and for scaling in general. firstborns are still the same height as guardsmen generally, for example, so it'd be nice if new firstborn models addressed that. pretty sure in the lore they have at least 2 feet on a regular human, and that's without armour

    • @sevatarlives185
      @sevatarlives185 3 года назад +5

      @@wolfgangrecordings "New" Firstborn? Don't hold your breath. The current SM Tactical squad is the last GW will ever produce is my guess, outside of old-scale Horus Heresy.
      EDIT: Oh wait, the new CSM are much more recent than the SM Tactical squad, and by definition are Firstborn regardless of their age so in that sense I guess they have upscaled. Pain in the arse if you wanted to make a loyalist army out of that kit though.

      Some people have thrown around the idea over the years (and might have been in a book at some point?) that their arms aren't even in the armours arms, but in the chestplate, like small mechas or something. more like the torso and helmet are cockpits.

      It put me off first time i saw it, but im liking it more the more i look at it. It looks like the old terminator artwork that put a lot of care into making them anatomically accurate. Yapp, TBH I go with this interpretation. In my world there are no primaris. I really love the design and every time I look at some of my very few old marines I feel kinda sad for them. The Primaris minis have so much more character and give the overall space marine feel that we know from the fluff.
      In fact, when Primaris came out I felt love for the Astartes for the first time in my life. Kinda pitty I quit playing 40k... but I just want to have a unit of Primaris Marines. I think part of the wonkyness comes from how the legs now are (relatively) slimmer than the arms rather than both being bulky, makes him look too lanky. Part of that also comes from the model being taller but not appreciably wider. Maybe something involving incorporating parts from the centurion or the closer to truescale heresy termies would help? also I think the circular plates on the legs just scream primaris and make it look less like a true scale termie and more like a primaris one (not a bad thing tho)

    Great vid, and a demonstration of kitbashing. I think the issue is with the Auto-reactive Shoulder pads. On the Original Termie they are almost as high as the top of the armour, but they aren't on the conversion. It's possible that larger shoulder pads would solve this issue

    • @wolfgangrecordings
      @wolfgangrecordings 3 года назад +4

      that's kinda the point of truescaling though, older terminator sculpts coudn't accommodate an actual human figure inside, unless their head protruded from the top of their chest. they also have comically narrow thighs in most older sculpts (and some modern ones) and that's something that tends to be addressed with truescaling alongside just making the model taller & bulkier

    • @Crushanator1
      @Crushanator1 2 года назад +3

      Yeah, the shoulders are the big disconnect for me too. I wonder if just using a green stuff spacer to slightly raise the position of the shoulder pads maybe 2mm would be enough to help. Using the Roman Legion style pads of the Horus Heresy terminators might be another option to raise the height but disguise the fact that that's been done.

    I can see why people might be off put by the design, it feels like it just doesn't have the oomph behind it, but in my opinion that could be pretty easily be fixed, by adding some plastic card into the mix, like cutting the shins in half vertically and then adding some plastic card would make it look wider and doing the same for the crothch/hip section too.
    Another thing would also probably help is giving the terminator more bling to it like artifacts, and other elaborately detailed things cause the suits are supposed be ancient relics.
    Other than that I do love the design of it and I hope you do more of these truescale terminator ideas in the future would be really cool! Keep up the good work.

    It's really easy to use the entire Terminator upper torso - no need to merge the Gravis front with the Terminator rear parts. If you trim away the Gravis chest, leaving the abdominal armour, the Terminator upper torso sits onto it nicely.
    A little bit of trimming is required at the rear of the Gravis armor to accomodate to the oval exhaust port, but this and a little Green Stuff is all that's required to achieve a seamless fit. I think this looks far more Terminator-like and achieves the same True Scale height as your method.
    That being said, another clear and easy to follow video. Keep up the good work.

    What can be added to look more bulky would be the skirting at the top of the pauldron like the deathwatch terminator shoulder pauldron and armor plating on the shins. And decorations.

    GW should have some sort of sprue recycling program.
    You mail in your empty sprues, they melt them down to use again, you get like, some money off your next purchase or something.
    I don't know, what I'm saying is that there's so much plastic in those sprues that most people just throw away.

  • @ManuelOrtizification
    @ManuelOrtizification 3 года назад

    Plastic card to widen the box part of the body and bigger shoulder pads sculpted from greenstuff would make it look more like a traditional terminator.
    Solid effort though. Going back and adding the hip plates was a huge step in the right direction

    The conversion is great! I think some of the dissonance comes from the proportions of the chest to the head compared to OG terminators. Taking out scale, the OG terminators has the chest comparatively wider and bulkier than the upgraded version, so the already large head looks smaller on the OG version. The OG version's head also feels more set back in the chest, making the whole area feel more immense, while the head on the upgraded version sticks out more with more of a neck. I think if they ever do primaris terminators they will just need to be really chunky and wide.

  • @nicholashay7188
    @nicholashay7188 3 года назад +1

    I love the converted scale! The bulkyness isn't really a problem considering that GW is replacing most of the older model sets, and this looks like a cleaner much needed scale.

    I think the part that gets me is how different the top half and the bottem half look. The top is box and squared off while the lower half has nice smooth curves and flows.

  • @Paradox-Roxy

    Honestly I love the conversion, I got into the game after primaris we're out so looking at the 5'11 terminators my brain could admit that something with the name terminators was that squat so this conversion looks sick to me.

    My fiance loves OG terminators, but I've always hated the short and squat look. True Scale was always my preferred look because when I got into the hobby I was at the peak of my art school program. Short, squat and boxy did not read as *heroic* to me then, so it always bothered me. This. This I LOVE.

    • @nutyyyy
      @nutyyyy Год назад

      Yes this looks quite similar to more anatomically realistic artwork of terminators that you see. The original models were very squat and boxy. This is a similar upgrade in the same way the primaris models improved regular marines.

Oh and a Terminator chaplain; you should do those as well. I've been building GW models for the past 33+ yrs. your on the right path maybe this will get GW something to think about; if it's not already in the works just years down the line Bravo! Peace!

    I'm impressed with the skill and creativity to make complete this project. I'm sure GW took some realistic liberties for style and impact.
    Your model feels like it skipped leg day. It doesn't feel as bulky or menacing, probably due to not having thick enough armor around the lower back, butt, and thighs. It does make the unit look more agile though.

    From the POV of a wh40k ignorant (me) I can assure the model looks very cool, the only thing is the helmet has a clearly old school design, being square and with sharp edges, that makes stride a bit with that smooth and curved armor, mabye to soften the diverse style you could have painted the helmet the same color of the armor, I do not particulary like the white helmet, it makes pop the thing you want to blend the most. Kit bashing models for 2 different eras is a particularly difficult task, you did a very good job!

    Seeing the 2 side by side at 11:57 you can see why it looks "odd". We are used to the original because the arms are higher up the torso which actually isn't anatomically cotrect for where the head is located. Yours is a truer s ale and truer anatomy proportioned.

    I do agree with you about the look but still great stuff, I used to kitbash terminators using back terminator armor but in front I used venerable dread coffin case, also i fit leg guards on top of the shoulder pads, to make it look like tartaros terminator, they look interesting 🤔... That is a really nice idea. I think the issue of looking less bulky is because having the arms lower breaks the bulky familiar silhouette. Typically they have this hunched top armoured heavy look. I personally think what you've come up with works really well though.
