DoW 1 is what got me into 40k in the first place. Then I kinda just started consuming lore at a frightening pace, then books, then watching hundreds of hours of lore videos, then . . .
I haven't gotten into the actual tabletop, partly because I'd have a hard time to find anyone to play with, partly because the whole painting miniatures thing puts me off, partly because of the outrageous cost, and partly because I despise GW and don't want to give them more money than I already have.
Imperial Guard, Necrons, and Eldar were my favorites in DoW. IG because I like the idea of all these regular dudes being up against all this horrific shit, Necrons because they are ridiculously OP in the game in my opinion, and Eldar in multiplayer because I can be annoying as fuck with them.
"Oh, you think you've got me cornered and all you have to do is break through my defences?" *teleports my entire base away with the webway*
I also tended to spam out an entire river of fire prism tanks, so many that I'd have to jump them over obstacles to get them out faster because they clogged the only entrance to my base.
Also, with Necrons: "Oh, you killed my entire army? Well, let me teleport in a new army. Oh, and here's my Necron Lord with the resurrection orb. Now I have double the army. Unit cap, what's that?"

    2) I RUclips search Henry Cavil
    3) He talked about Warhammer
    4) I spend a year watching Luetin videos
    5) Then I read Devastation of Baal, Dark Imperium and now 11 books into Horus Heresy.

For me, I got into 40K through Darktide as well, way back in the beta. From there I listened to a few audio books from the first few Horus Heresy novels, then some Guard books. I went to my nearest Games Workshop and picked up the Cadia Stands Astra Militarum army box. $4,000 and a year and a half later, "even in debt, I still serve."

  • @RedKincaid

I started reading the 40k wiki because I was bored and someone had linked to it, and I ended up reading it for about an hour every night before bed for like a year. Now I've read a few dozen of the books and played a bunch of the video games and watched all the fan animations, my best friend and my little brother both paint minis and are part of online forms, and my brother in particular knows more about Warhammer fantasy than the rest of us know about 40K put together. We're all warhammer fans and talk about it together somehow even though we all got into it in completely different ways. I think how expansive it is is one of the things that makes it so fun to talk about. I don't know anything about most Space Marine chapters or the particulars of the Horus heresy or many other factions and events, but I could talk for hours about Orks and Admech and Nekrons and Assassins and so on, so I always know something that the person I'm talking to doesn't and they always know something that I don't, because it's basically impossible to know everything about it
    edit: expensive ≠ expansive

The implication is that I have neither a sense of direction nor full grasp of how bloody insane the High lords are to think they are capable of controlling this Imperium. I really appreciate the perspective they bring in as former pro Magic players, both because it lets them be freshly critical about things that are long-entrenched in 40k as "outsiders," and because it gives them the broader understanding of game design that comes from going so hard into more than one game.

This is the charm of 40k. No matter how deep you dig there is always more. Is it all good? No. Is it all coherent? Gods no. Is it all going to be liked by everyone? Hell no. But there is always more ways of engaging with the hobby. If you don't like a part of it you can easily pretend it isn't there and you won't loose much. In comparison if you don't like one movie or game from most franchises, you dislike like 20% of everything from it by default

I think the greatest thing about Darktide is that it took some of the most small-time 40k units and made them look and feel awesome and powerful, the guard veteran, sanctioned psyker and priest are low-stat cannon fodder units, and while ogryns have a decent stat line, their models are dated and derpy, and other 40k media always portray them as full potato meat mountains, but the way theyre all represented in Darktide makes them out to be absolute badasses.

I got hooked on 40k back in '14 or '15. Left back in '21 because of how GW treated the creator of the Astartes series as well as other minor reasons. The lore is what kept me there for so long, and they are rapidly retconning the best, most grimdark parts of it out to try and appeal to the mythical "wider audience."
You will either leave disgusted, or live long enough to see yourself become a GW shill.

I used to play a lot of VRChat, and I had a number of friends who were pretty into Warhammer. Many a times I'd see these big space marines doing goofy shit or exploring the various models that I always thought were cool. Most the time I'd digest the world through them, exploring worlds, looking at models, and hearing about the lore.
It wasn't until one of them sent a "choose your legion" in a Discord chat and I managed to roll the Thousand Sons. From there I finally had a legion I could latch onto, and after scrolling the wiki page for hours I was finally deep enough to be considered a fan. Despite only knowing one measly faction and text book descriptions for the rest, I started to consume more and more lore.
Now I played the new Space Marine 2 game, and have a 30K JoyToy figure of Ahriman and a terminator on my desk. I hope to one day get some 40K ones to put alongside them and maybe a Grey Knight figure.

Being an RTS fan I naturally wanted to play it from the start, but it's such a fun, easy to learn hard to master game that has enough factions and relevant strategic gameplay to represent what 40k is all about. For the real Warhammer experience go to your local game store (ideally an indie and not an official GW store; GW stores are very bad about hard-selling newbies) and ask for a tutorial game. I guarantee you that the people who actually play the game aren't letting a dumb argument on Twitter hold them back from playing with their toys.

I've only just started to get into Warhammer in the last month or so. I saw Rogue Trader on Steam and I thought I'd buy it because I quite like the whole turn based combat system as well as the isometric layout (having played similar games like Baldur's Gate, Atom and so on, it was familiar). I knew about some aspects of Warhammer, like the Space Marines and so on and the Emperor but the true depth of the lore has absolutely astounded and enveloped me. Beginning Rogue Trader I was definitely confused about a great many things, but the encyclopedia is really helpful. I stopped playing before even finishing the prologue so I could actually brush up on the Lore and I've been obsessed ever since. I definitely have so much more to delve into and I think I'll stick with the games for now before I consider the tabletop (mainly due to a lack of space). Rogue Trader so far is excellent, definitely not without its flaws, but I shall absolutely be playing it for a long while to come; so far I must have sunk about 50 so hours into it.

there is a certain sadness in watching people joining a thing as it dies. as much as 40k fans enjoy their GW-induced angst, their corporate executives may just have over-stepped their customer disdain. not to worry, the executives in question will be fine as their personal wealth is in no way tied to corporate profitability; but the company itself is rapidly going the way of disney, and notable video game makers. GW is already at the stage where executives and their shills are pushing away their hordes of zombie-like supporters telling them to leave the game...

I got into this from watching a playthrough of Battle Sister (the VR game) and was quite intrigued but not totally sold, then I saw the fight between the Chaos Knight and Imperial Knight towards the end and I was instantly hooked. Big chivalry mech go brrrrr
I now have somewhere around 3000 pts of knights counting the imperial and chaos knights together (mostly Imperial, just recently dipping my toes into Chaos because War Dogs are just stupidly good)
