This has been by far the most helpful granny square tutorial I've ever seen. I have tried and failed so many times but was finally able to make something great. Thank you! ❤️
Thank you! This really helped me with the Granny Square blanket and my understanding how to do granny squares- I’m really liking how my blanket is turning out so far
This is a great tutorial , I was so genuinely confused by other tutorials but you made it really easy to understand ! Thank you for sharing your knowledge ☺️
This has been the best tutorial and most likely one I will come back and reference. Not only am I making a beautiful blanket for Valentine's Day, but you've also taught me how to weave in ends and change colors! Thank you so much for this!!
Thank you so much for this easy to follow tutorial. My first time to make a Granny Square blanket. You gave a very detailed instruction that helps beginners like me to learn it quickly. 🙂
Oh, I am so glad you were so successful with this project! I do aspire to share beginner-friendly patterns that are easy to make, but don't look like beginner projects. Well done!
You can also make this with only ONE color ... it all depends on what you'd like to see in the finished item. Or, if unsure about the color scheme of the person you're gifting with the finished blanket/afghan, etc.
How do I make this with one colour? I was going well until the first colour switch as we end in the middle but due to the colour switch we then start in the corner, I’m not sure how to get back to the corner to continue with the same colour
See the video tutorial at 12:47 to see how to end one color (and darn in the tail ends), then see 14:24 on how to start the new color, and then you can see it again at 17:10. See 18:12 on how to turn your work and do a second round in the same color. You always finish your last round where it is done and then begin the new color in a corner.

It is a great project for beginners... I do have a Beginner Crochet Series that might be helpful. Even if you know crochet basics there might be some good tips for you! patriciafentie.com/2019/06/17/beginner-crochet-series/
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I have finally found the perfect "Easy" Granny Square Blanket for beginners. I am a true beginner. I made one afghan for one of my granddaughters when she was 4 and she is now 9. Well, I have a 16 year old granddaughter and her favorite color is yellow. I want to make the blanket larger than the size given, but my question is, how do I continue with one color? Everyone? I need to start this project like yesterday. I need to have it done for Christmas. So I am ready! Again, thank you.
Wonderful! All you do is continue turning your work with each round without adding a new color. Where your rounds end will move along the straight edge of the blanket. Carry on until you have the size you want, then do the final border round. You could to that in a different shade of yellow as an accent. Or... you could do the same pattern as I do, but use different shades of yellow rather than completely different colors...
Oh my goodness I just came upon this gorgeous color granny square blanket. I just purchased a Pound of Love Mustard color. I needed a mixed color blanket.
I loved watching your video. I found it so helpful. I'm just beginning my journey with crochet. Having difficulty holding the yarn, do you have any tips please. Many thanks.
You can check out this tutorial on crochet tension...it has a lot of good tips. But, mostly it just takes practice: ruclips.net/video/PxAVTN_T3mk/видео.html
I'm using "Papatya Ba Tik" DK variegated yarn for mine. The colour are beautiful. I have one question, when doing the border how many trebles do i put into the chain spaces?
You can slow the video down by going to settings (the gear icon below the video) and choose "playback speed", choose 0.75 and that should be a good speed. You can do that with any video.
I have yarn that recommends using a 5.5mm crochet hook. I’ve done too rounds and the yarn is rather thick to work with. Is this the wrong type of yarn? It’s 100 percent acrylic.
The yarn I use is a number 4 medium weight acrylic yarn, and the recommended hook size is 5mm on the package. This weight yarn is also know as "aran" or "worsted weight" yarn. Within this weight range, yarns can vary in actual size quite a bit. If you are finding the yarn too thick to work with, then you may want to find a different brand and weight. All the details for this project are in the written pattern: patriciafentie.com/2022/05/22/easy-granny-square-blanket-for-beginners/
I’m not new to crochet but I’ve never made a large granny square afghan, so this will be my first time making one. I was a bit lost on the final row when you put the edging on. Only 5 double crochets instead of 2 sets of 3 double crochets when you started the edging 21:20 ? I want to make sure so that my blanket doesn’t look wonky.
The last round is done as a full double crochet round. It's not clusters of 3 dc's with a chain 1 in between. The corner is made with 5 dc's to get around the corner, without it being too 'full'. You may want to do 6 dc's in the corners if you have tight tension, but 5 should do it. You are then doing 1 dc in each stitch, including the chain stitches, creating the solid border.
You always darn in your tail ends, do not cut them off with out securing them otherwise the fabric will unravel. See 15:00 in the video to see how to darn in the ends: ruclips.net/video/uFo7oX7QTDA/видео.html
Would you suggest this project for a person who is crocheting for the first time and has no experience. I am a young person just seeking out new hobbies to try, and crocheting appealed to me! Also how many mm is that hook?
I would recommend starting with my Beginner Crochet tutorials so you learn proper techniques: ruclips.net/video/K4wRQ06OjOg/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/uFo7oX7QTDA/видео.html. This crocheted bracelet is the best beginner project because it is done using only the chain stitch: ruclips.net/video/FZ0E8_lQXts/видео.html Then this headband is made using a simple single crochet stitch: ruclips.net/video/fvEuEtNdMqI/видео.html and can be sewn together as shown in that tutorial or with the knot look of this tutorial: ruclips.net/video/gLb0LJ46QuM/видео.html This headband is also good for beginners, but the first one is even easier. Start with small projects like these and then graduate to something like a scarf or granny squares. I wouldn't start with a blanket until you've made a couple of smaller projects. Check out my playlists for all sorts of different projects!
See 2:00 in the video where I am discussing the supplies. I always provide that information at the beginning of each tutorial as I talk about the supplies.
Very nice. I hope you will see and answer. U am Using self striping ? So I nit chg and cutting. Using your tech where do I go. I’m not in a corner ism at the slip stitch. I hoped this would stop the seam etc. thanks.
A self striping yarn would be beautiful. Just continue with the pattern as shown for the first two rounds (the cream color). There is no need to change the yarn color, just carry on with the self striping yarn.
@@createandcrochetwithpatricia ok. Yes. I meant because I am turning and not creating a seam on the diagonal as I increase rounds. My end is not at the corner every round it will move ? So do I slip-stitch to the corner and chain to begin the round. And can I just chain up and start my cluster… say from the side of any cluster, the top. Etc. Sorry I was not clear the first time. And thank you so very much.
After the start chain and end of the round. We do not automatically end in a corner and start from the corner. As the round increases cluster’s so your begins point l moves. If I follow you exactly cut and start I’m clear. But I am not cutting and changing. So I tried slip stitching to The corner. But it got bulky and yucky. See what I mean. Ty. I love your tutorials. I am left handed. I can follow you without issue. That is not what I can say about every tutorial. Thank you again.
Ah, yes, I see what you mean. When you come to the end of the round (and you are not in a corner), join with a sl st into the 3 ch of the beg ch2 (or 3) of the prev rnd. Turn your work, sl st into the ch 1 sp (or sp btw 3dc clusters), ch 2 (or 3), 2 dc in ch1 sp (or sp). Carry on with the pattern.
Yes, at 7:55 I say, "I've come out of the corner with my ch 1". The written directions may also be helpful: patriciafentie.com/2022/05/22/easy-granny-square-blanket-for-beginners/
@@createandcrochetwithpatricia Thank you so much, I’m new at crochet & enjoy learning from your videos. So one chain before I join with a slip stitch at each completed round.🙌Thanks 😮💨
When crocheting in rounds, the fabric can pull in the same direction and create a bit of a wonky shape. This is especially true for individuals who haven't mastered proper crochet tension. Turning the blanket for each round balances the tension. It also creates a fun texture, and makes it so there is no wrong side or right side...so lots of benefits! 👍👌
I think so, you will want to try to make the strands the same size. So if using a finer yarn, you may have to use 2 strands. If you have a bulky yarn, that will be the gauge you will start with and then create combinations of the smaller yarns to equal that size. So maybe a medium weight with a light weight to equal the bulky, then maybe 3 lightweights to equal the bulky...that sort of thing. Also you can change your crochet hook sizes to accommodate the different sizes of yarn. A larger hook will make the stitch larger and a smaller hook will make the stitch tighter and smaller. I hope that makes sense! Have fun!
Hi, I am lost around 7:49 when you say to just repeat where what we did before. What should I do first? Which step do we restart from? Thank you. Loving this video so far because I think I’m finally getting the hang of a granny square. But I only have a half done one done right now
You are repeating the corner stitch pattern...3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1 in each ch2 sp (corner spaces). There is a link to the written pattern in the description box below the video that may help as well 👍😀
All that information is in the video and also in the written pattern found in the description box. Click on "...more" below the video, or watch the supply list in the video :)
Technically, would ot be possible to just keep crocheting this pattern until you have a massive blanket? Im new to crocheting so i dont know would it work
Absolutely! You can make the blanket as big as you like. You can use a different color sequence, or just one color yarn. Crochet is very open to modification!
@@createandcrochetwithpatricia thank you for the information, I've never tried anything like this before but I think im going to give it ago,I've only ever made very simple projects but i think if I could get thr hang of this it would be rewarding!
I'm thinking the same question. I'm stuck at 8.40 wondering if I can just keep going or do I have to snip off and turn it? Or can I just continue like I did the second row?
I would think that either cotton or acrylic would be fine outdoors. I can't say for sure though, this is just an opinion. The cotton might take longer to dry if it gets wet, but it might be more durable than the acrylic.
You can use any type of yarn you desire! Wool is a natural fiber made from animal hair/fur such as sheep and alpaca, whereas acrylic yarn is a synthetic fiber and is much less expensive than natural fibers such as wool. All yarns also come in a variety of weights, and for this project I am using a number 4 medium weight yarn which is also called worsted in some countries.
I'm sorry, but I've never understood how to calculate a project by how much the yarn weighs. I've always used length. Every yarn will have a different weight depending on the material and the brand. For example, in the number 4 medium weight yarn class, Bernat Cotton has 77 meters per 50gms and Lion Brand Mandala has 105 meters per 50gms. The yarn I used for this project is Bernat Premium (#4) and it comes in at 83 meters per 50gms. So perhaps you can use that weight to calculate what you would need. 👍
Hi can anyone help with a query please, I am making a continuous granny square blanket fir greatcgrandaughter single bed, how do i get the lengh after achieving the widthvof 39 length 75 without making it bigger in widthvthan single bed. Many thanks.
There are two possibilities to create the blanket you want. The first is to make the square blanket until you reach the desired width of the blanket. Then you could add rows of the granny stitch on each end to get the blanket to the length you want. Stay tuned for a tutorial on the straight granny stitch, that will be my next tutorial. You could also make a rectangle blanket, but getting the proportions exact would take some special math (and I'm sorry I can't help you with that). But here is a tutorial for a rectangle blanket, and of course, you can make it as large as you like: ruclips.net/video/rvx3Wt0sGuM/видео.html
Thank you so much for your response Patricia, sorry for late thanks, but I have just woken up, it's 7.30 am here in England UK.i Will do your first suggestion of adding rows as I am already 800grms in.don't fancy unraveling that much. I am also now a new subscriber.many Thanks Sonja.😊@@createandcrochetwithpatricia
I'm not sure if this new tutorial will come up for you in YT, but here is the GS straight stitch pattern. You can start in one corner of your blanket with a set of 3 dc, and in your case, you'll add a ch1 between the clusters. The second row would begin with the ch3 (as a dc) and end with a dc. Enjoy! ruclips.net/video/kmtNg9gYyRE/видео.html
You will turn it at the end of each round. If you are changing colors like this tutorial, then the first round will end in a corner (turn your work) and the second round of that same color will finish in a cluster of 3dc. Then you add a new color (after turning your work), and I recommend starting in the corner. However, you can start a new color at any point...in a ch1 space or in a corner. If you are using just one color, the end of the round will move with each consecutive round to the next ch1 sp. In all cases, you end the round and turn your work.
You chain 1 in-between the sets of 3 double crochet stitches along the straight edge. You chain 2 in-between the 2 sets of 3 double crochets in the corners.
It may have something to do with your tension. If it is too tight, that could cause it to curl. I have a tutorial on proper tension and another option is to use a larger crochet hook. ruclips.net/video/PxAVTN_T3mk/видео.html
I do explain that in the video... it is to keep a balanced tension while crocheting in the round. Some people have tight tension which causes a large granny square to twist in the direction of crocheting.
See 1:25 in the video for the total yardage required. How much of each color depends on how many colors you decide to incorporate. You can do the math based on the total yardage.
For sure! It will be a much larger stitch and the blanket will be heavier, but it will work just fine. After a few rounds, you will be able to tell whether you like the chunkier yarn or not. The wonderful thing about crochet is that if you don't like it, you can just undo it! Have fun 😀
No, and you don't even have to turn your work...you can continue making the rounds all in one direction. This method of turning the work just helps to prevent the blanket from becoming twisted which can sometimes happen if crocheting all in one direction.
Appreciate you taking the time to do the video but it does not feel like a beginner video, it's so fast. Maybe you could repeat things and go a bit slower?
You can slow the speed of the video down to suit you. Just go to settings (the gear icon below the video), choose "playback speed" and choose 0.75. You can even make it slower, but that will probably suffice. Once you learn the basic granny square stitch, the repetition of the same stitch will soon become very easy. Enjoy!
Have you check out my beginner tips? Sometimes we don't learn one or two little tricks or techniques that can make all the difference in our crochet skills. Also, learning anything new takes time... be patient and kind to yourself! patriciafentie.com/2019/06/17/beginner-crochet-series/
I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but if you find I go too fast, you can go to settings below the video (the little gear icon) and set the speed of the video to 0.75. That is a really nice speed for following along. Crochet is a gentle and peaceful craft, it's totally suited to being in a 'slow state', I even find it rather meditative. I think slow is good!!! 🙏🙌👌
You can go to settings, click on 'playback speed' and choose 0.75 (or less) to slow the video down. Also, if you are brand new to crochet, check out my beginner series to learn all the basic tips, techniques and stitches. It is in the link below the video (click on ... more)
You can slow the speed of the video down by going to settings (the gear icon), choose "playback speed" and 0.75. This is a great speed for learning. Make sure to check out my Beginner Crochet Series in the description box below to learn all the basics of crochet. This will also make it easier to follow any pattern. Enjoy!
I'm sorry you feel this way, but a granny square blanket does make a great beginner's project. It repeats the same stitches over and over, so it is a great way to practice crochet. You can slow the video down by going to settings (the gear icon) and choose "playback speed", then choose 0.75 and that will slow it down more. Also, I always recommend starting with my Beginners Crochet Series where you learn all the basics of crochet including proper crochet tension, darning in tail ends, and all the basic stitches: patriciafentie.com/2019/06/17/beginner-crochet-series/

Thank you. I have been working on a 7 year lasp afghan. Couldn’t remember anything
You're welcome :)
Do you have any tutorials about lining the blanket? Thanks
Used this to make my first croched item. 😊
Sorry, I do not have a tutorial for that, but I like the idea! I will put that on my list of possible tutorials.
And is it always three double crochets into the holes please thank you Patricia
Hi Patricia! Do the tails need to be sewn in or can they be cut off? Does it change durability?
You always darn in your tail ends, do not cut them off with out securing them otherwise the fabric will unravel. See 15:00 in the video to see how to darn in the ends: ruclips.net/video/uFo7oX7QTDA/видео.html
Would you suggest this project for a person who is crocheting for the first time and has no experience. I am a young person just seeking out new hobbies to try, and crocheting appealed to me! Also how many mm is that hook?
Hi! Could u pls answer my questions?
I would recommend starting with my Beginner Crochet tutorials so you learn proper techniques: ruclips.net/video/K4wRQ06OjOg/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/uFo7oX7QTDA/видео.html.
This crocheted bracelet is the best beginner project because it is done using only the chain stitch: ruclips.net/video/FZ0E8_lQXts/видео.html
Then this headband is made using a simple single crochet stitch: ruclips.net/video/fvEuEtNdMqI/видео.html and can be sewn together as shown in that tutorial or with the knot look of this tutorial: ruclips.net/video/gLb0LJ46QuM/видео.html This headband is also good for beginners, but the first one is even easier.
Start with small projects like these and then graduate to something like a scarf or granny squares. I wouldn't start with a blanket until you've made a couple of smaller projects. Check out my playlists for all sorts of different projects!
@@createandcrochetwithpatricia thanks! Your my go to channel for crocheting!
@@createandcrochetwithpatriciahow many mm is the hook ur using in this video?
See 2:00 in the video where I am discussing the supplies. I always provide that information at the beginning of each tutorial as I talk about the supplies.
Am.trying to.make mine too😊
Wonderful! 👍💖
Very nice. I hope you will see and answer. U am
Using self striping ?
So I tried slip stitching to
The corner.
I couldn’t tell if you chained one before on the second round when you joined with slip stitch? Thank you ☺️
Yes, at 7:55 I say, "I've come out of the corner with my ch 1".
Yes...basically, you have 2 chains between each 3 dc cluster in the corners, and then always 1 chain between each 3 dc cluster throughout.
@@createandcrochetwithpatricia 🙌yay🤭 I finally get it👏🏼😮💨😅💃🏻🩷
Thank you so much 🥰
Which way do you turn your granny square. Thank you
If you watch the video you can see that clearly as I film as if you are holding the work yourself.
Nice pattern. Why are you turning. Just curious. Thanks
Hi love to make one,do I have to use all same size wool. I have many balls of wool left over n different sizes
There is a link to the written pattern in the description box below the video that may help as well 👍😀
@@createandcrochetwithpatricia thank you so much❤️❤️
What kind of yarn? Is it cotton? I’m thinking of buying a big cake of some colorful cotton to make this out of one color
All that information is in the video and also in the written pattern found in the description box. Click on "...more" below the video, or watch the supply list in the video :)
@@createandcrochetwithpatricia Thank you! I just started making it.
Wonderful!
For sure... you will do a great job!
I'm thinking the same question. I'm stuck at 8.40 wondering if I can just keep going or do I have to snip off and turn it? Or can I just continue like I did the second row?
Yes, you can...but you do want to continue to turn your work at the end (and therefore, the beginning) of each round.
I love to crochet a granny square blanket
Well, I hope you try this pattern!
If we want to use the blanket outside should we use cotton instead??
I would think that either cotton or acrylic would be fine outdoors. I can't say for sure though, this is just an opinion. The cotton might take longer to dry if it gets wet, but it might be more durable than the acrylic.
Can this be made in cotton thread? Acrylic means wool right?
You can use any type of yarn you desire! Wool is a natural fiber made from animal hair/fur such as sheep and alpaca, whereas acrylic yarn is a synthetic fiber and is much less expensive than natural fibers such as wool. All yarns also come in a variety of weights, and for this project I am using a number 4 medium weight yarn which is also called worsted in some countries.
I am very new to crocheting plz guide me how many balls of yarn for this projects
I'm always curious why people ask these questions... the information is provided at 1:40 in the video.
Sorry dear its just that i dont how how many yds or cm would require how many gms . usually where i live there's only a mention of gms of yarn
@@createandcrochetwithpatricia thanks alot❤️❤️
Does it matter what area to turn afghan?
You will turn it at the end of each round. If you are changing colors like this tutorial, then the first round will end in a corner (turn your work) and the second round of that same color will finish in a cluster of 3dc. Then you add a new color (after turning your work), and I recommend starting in the corner. However, you can start a new color at any point...in a ch1 space or in a corner. If you are using just one color, the end of the round will move with each consecutive round to the next ch1 sp. In all cases, you end the round and turn your work.
When do you chain one and when do you chain two please
You chain 1 in-between the sets of 3 double crochet stitches along the straight edge. You chain 2 in-between the 2 sets of 3 double crochets in the corners.
Do you have a tutorial for the magic circle?
I don't have a separate tutorial for that but I do show it in the beginning of this tutorial: ruclips.net/video/7KkD7JlW-ro/видео.html
Do you have the left hand version of this
I'm sorry, no I don't. I wonder if you were to set a mirror up opposite the video and watch the reflection... would that work?
I've followed the instructions exactly but my blanket doesn't lie flat! Why is that? It happens every time I make a granny square blanket.
It may have something to do with your tension. If it is too tight, that could cause it to curl. I have a tutorial on proper tension and another option is to use a larger crochet hook. ruclips.net/video/PxAVTN_T3mk/видео.html
Why are they turning Granny around ?
I'll crochet the round on
I do explain that in the video... it is to keep a balanced tension while crocheting in the round. Some people have tight tension which causes a large granny square to twist in the direction of crocheting.
@@createandcrochetwithpatricia, And I'll continue crocheting in rounds
How many rolls you use?
See 1:25 in the video for the total yardage required. How much of each color depends on how many colors you decide to incorporate. You can do the math based on the total yardage.
Can this be done with chunky size 6 yarn?
For sure! It will be a much larger stitch and the blanket will be heavier, but it will work just fine. After a few rounds, you will be able to tell whether you like the chunkier yarn or not. The wonderful thing about crochet is that if you don't like it, you can just undo it! Have fun 😀
Does it matter which way you turn yiur wirk? Thank you❤
No, and you don't even have to turn your work...you can continue making the rounds all in one direction.
Enjoy!

Very nice but I need to learn toys
Sorry, I don't do toys. I have a form of dyslexia which makes counting difficult. There are many wonderful teachers for toys on YT!
Watching these videos I realize just how slow I am…
I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but if you find I go too fast, you can go to settings below the video (the little gear icon) and set the speed of the video to 0.75. That is a really nice speed for following along. Crochet is a gentle and peaceful craft, it's totally suited to being in a 'slow state', I even find it rather meditative. I think slow is good!!! 🙏🙌👌
That was too fast and couldn’t see where you went in. This is the problem learning I can’t see where you go in to the circle 😢
You can go to settings, click on 'playback speed' and choose 0.75 (or less) to slow the video down. Also, if you are brand new to crochet, check out my beginner series to learn all the basic tips, techniques and stitches. It is in the link below the video (click on ... more)
