- Опубликовано: 30 июн 2024
- This is a tutorial on how to crochet a granny square to any size for beginner crocheters who already know how to crochet the basic stitches. I show how you can turn a small granny square into a giant granny square blanket and offer plenty of tips and tricks along the way. Although I use US terminology, people who want to use UK can also use this tutorial and every time I say double crochet, think treble crochet instead. This is the right handed version of this tutorial. There is a left handed version linked further down!

You crochet so very beautifully,That grannie square is the prettiest I think I have ever seen, And I am 90 years old.enjoyed watching you.Thank you so much.
A blanket like this would scare me but you really broke it down and made it easy to understand! Thank you, looking forward to starting on one very soon!
This is really brilliant feedback and that's exactly why I make tutorials! I'm so happy they have been helpful and good luck on your blanket journey!
Question, you mention using double knit weight yarn? Can I use a worsted size 4 weight instead do you think?
@@annastasiadobbins5585 you can use any size yarn you like for this blanket but you’ll need to adjust your hook size. We don’t class our yarn as worsted weight in the UK but from google it’s the same as our aran weight so with a 5mm hook? This weight yarn is good for blankets too 😁
@@meemamakes thank you so much for responding! I’m looking up a conversion chart for future reference. 😀
I Love your Voice. Very relaxin 😊 Ive done granny square afgans for many years now. I remember My Sweet Mom setting in front of the television watching The Ed Sullivan Show and making her squares for "her quilt" as she called them❤ ive often wondered why they were called or given the name "granny". Does anyone know? Your afgan is absolutely beautiful and i ordered the exact colors and brand of yarn that you used on yours. The yarn is very soft. I hadn't paid attention as to what size crochet hook to use until i looked . Ive never used one that small before so i had to buy one. Now i know how the afgan can be as large with so little yarn. A #4 crochet hook😂 Again, thank you for sharing your Gift with us, God Bless You❤
No one had ever explained the reasoning behind turning your work before makes perfect sense now you’ve explained beautifully thank you .I won’t be changing colours every time either .😊😊❤
I’m so happy this helped!
If you are not changing yarn each round, how do you turn your work?
I started to crochet a day or so ago. Was looking for something that would be good practice and be great to use afterwards. Excited to use this video, thanks! ❤
Oooo yes this is perfect for a first project and you can just stop at any size too. Good luck on your blanket journey :)
Thanks so much for this video. I watched loads of different tutorials and yours is by far the best. Everything is clearly explained and pace isn't too slow or too fast. I made my niece a blanket and I'm really pleased with it. Thanks so much! This was my first crochet project
Hurrah! After watching so many videos I have finally found one that makes complete sense. Thank you so much, I'm going to start my blanket righ now.
So happy this tutorial has worked for you 😊 hope you enjoy your blanket journey
Thank you for such an excellent instructional video! You have such a calming and patient demeanor. 😊. I've subscribed and will have to watch again to get started. I've been doing straight line blankets with a few different stitches (my favorite right now is Alpine!) but I've been wanting to try granny squares. I'm most intimidated by all the ends to weave in so I will be looking for your tutorial on how to do that next! Thank you again. 😊
Thank you for a fab tutorial. You explain things so clear. Really easy to understand x
You are very welcome. I’m so happy the tutorial helped you 😊
Ahh omg I just finished mine all thanks to you ❤your are so talented god bless you !!!!!!❤
Congratulations on your blanket finish!!! Yay 🥳
I'm so glad that l came across this video you explain the best way on how to make a granny square blanket.
I’m following your pattern with a few tweaks and I’m loving it.
Just ordered the wool! Excited, and thank you so much for the discount x
Yay I hope you love the colours. It’s one of my favourite palettes I’ve put together! Good luck on you blanket journey ❤️
Es precioso tu trabajo, gracias por permitir los subtitulos en español.
Omg! thank you for making this video. I have been working on my first granny square blanket for 3 months and today I thought I had missed a stitch after the corners and was planning on undoing the lot but after watching this I realised I hadn't 🧡😂
Yay I’m so glad it helped you! Good luck with your blanket 🍀
Thank you for this easy to follow video Em. I just ordered every single colored you requested. As soon as I receive my yarns I will be making this. 😃
Wonderful! I hope you enjoy making it 😊

I've always wanted to make something like this, I think its a great pattern that you can do slowly and bit by bit while working on other projects as well, hopefully I can make a start while the CAL is still going 😊
Good luck! It’s very fun and relaxing to make. I’m making a scrappy one right now! If you don’t manage to start before the CAL finishes the pattern and videos will remain up indefinitely and for free 😁
Lovely tutorial. Thanks 😊
OH MY GOSH! I L💖VE the colors you have chosen for your blanket!😍
Thankyou 🍂🍁 I’m a sucker for autumnal colours
Thank you for the clear instructions. I’m new to crochet and am enjoying making this blanket. Just completed round 46, 184 clusters, 36g yarn. 😅

Thankfully I found you just in the nick of time. I just started crocheting and I'm lost with the other tutorials, you make perfect sense to me. I've been knitting since 1967 and thought I'd look into something new for a change. Its about time, right???
I am jumping in. So far it seems really easy. Thank you.
Have fun!
Brilliant explaining of how to crochet this neat colourful blanket.

Great tutorial. Thank you!
You’re welcome 😊
Thanks for Tutorial
Nice dear, making it ,hope it will turn out nicely 💖
I found your other video which answered my question. Thanks.
I might be wrong but it looks like you have a tremor, and from someone with an extreme tremor it is so nice to see a crochet tutorial with it as my shakes make me feel so uncomfortable watching people do it so easily. Thankyou so much ❤
Thankyou so much. This is first time I’ve had a positive comment about my tremor. I have long covid and I now have a tremor when I do physical things and it is part of my life now. I’m sorry that you feel uncomfortable with your tremor. @@vloging_with_amanda oooo good luck! It’s so exciting to start a new project 😁 I’m resisting starting a new one before I’ve finished this blanket
@@meemamakes I can’t wait to see a new one ❤❤❤
You explain so well thank you , i enjoy your videos you have a very sweet , clear relaxing voice . I coild watch you crochete for hours . I finally understand the granny square thank you . If iam only using one color will my granny squares stretch out badly i wont be turning to work on the back side because i wont be adding any other colors . Any advice? I want to use a cake yarn that changes color in its own for a big franny square blanket like the one tour showing. Thanks again ❤
I’m so glad this tutorial helped you! When using one colour you can still turn, but I don’t have a tutorial for this just yet. It is on my to do list though so I’ll try and get it filmed next week. You don’t have to turn, but your square may end up a little wonky on the sides but this is still fine and looks good too!
Thank you so much! ❤
You're welcome 😊
Thanks a lot ... 😍😍😍
You are welcome ❤️
This may be an odd compliment but your nails are beautiful! Love this blanket and making it for a friends birthday.
Oh thank you, that’s so lovely to hear. I always worry when I don’t have them painted for tutorials as lots of other tutorials creators have lovely nails.
@@meemamakes You’re welcome :)
you are the best ❤️❤️❤️
Thankyou. So are you for commenting 🥰
@@meemamakes I have like 8 rows so far ^_^
I didn’t order colors in time so I will be playing catch-up as soon my yarn arrives!
That’s ok. Everything will be available forever so no rush!
Thank you!
You’re welcome 😊
You saved my life!!! I made it one day before my friend's birthday. The tutorial is amazing!!!
Wow, just one day! You must have been crocheting so fast
Love your colors.. could let me know what colors you used?
Love this!! Going to start this week. But can you tell me how many balls of yarn for each color we should order?
Hi yes. So I used 12 colours. I used 1 each of all the colours and 2 of Camel for the border. You will have enough yarn to make the blanket bigger. I used approx 2/3rd of each 100g ball. Hope this helps
Im gonna make this as a christmas present! How much yarn did you use?
this tutorial is awesome! question, if i’m not switching colors, would you just recommend turning the row over like normal? or is there a different process to do?
I would still recommend turning to counteract the skew. I have a tutorial for a granny square in one colour that you may find helpful for how to transition up into another row of the same colour when turning ruclips.net/video/wscK3pz33S8/видео.htmlsi=RFpfY6Vt0Y7SCaN8
I love it how about modified to rectangle for a bed .. do we stop and just continue with with length.. please show how too 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Do you mean like a granny rectangle? Or to extend one of the sides of a square?
@@meemamakesbeen looking for a comment or tutorial, I was making this blanket as a gift but it gets a little weird as it gets bigger since it’s completely square. Is there a way I could continue making the blanket in a rectangular way?
What if you are using one multicolor yarn? Do I need to still cut each round?
Is this blanket like the heavy one? Bc for this one you need 15 yarns and each is 100g so 1.5kg in total? you really did a good job expaining everything so I want to make my mom this blanket, so that's why I'm asking🌸I know the yarn you used is DK but I still don't get it since I'm new to making blankets📖🧶
Hey love this tutorial 😊it makes it so easy to understand and do!, I do have one question by any chance can you show me how to sow the ends in?
Yes, there is a tutorial here: BEGINNER: How to Weave in your Ends - 2 Methods!

Tysm
Hi I have a question. Do you still need to cut you yarn if u have a yarn cake with multiple colors while ending rows???
Would I be able to modify this to make it a chunky blanket using Bernat blanket or forever fleece yarn?
Yes definitely! You’d need to go up to an appropriate hook size and I’d recommend checking out this tutorial if you are using the same yarn throughout and not changing colours every round: ruclips.net/video/wscK3pz33S8/видео.htmlsi=6GjDjde9jA-wwFFw
Hello I want to let you see what you inspired me to do . Ik have en question can you also make it in a rectangle en how do you do this ?
Yes you can make a rectangle, you start with a chain and then do the granny groups along both sides of the chain. I have never done it myself but I'm sure there will be tutorials out there that will help you
How many balls of yarn did you use on this project?
Question, what's the thin of your yarn in this video, or what thin should I use for this blanket?
And, what's the brand or company of the yarn you used?
It is Stylecraft Special DK and you can find the list of colours and can get the yarn pack with world wide shipping here: www.woolwarehouse.co.uk/meema-makes-emyleah-newbery-granny-love-blanket-yarn-pack-stylecraft-special-dk
how do we go about the color order?
How much of each color do I need to order?
I would say 2-3 skeins depending on the size 🤍
I’m not sure how big to make it! How many rounds did everyone do?
How many rounds precisely does it take to get a blanket as large as yours? And do I wait until the end of the whole project to weave ends in
Mine was 54 rounds and measured just over 1 meter square but this size entirely depends on your tension. My tension for this blanket ended up being quite tight! And regarding ends, it’s entirely your own preference. I like leaving them to the end because I enjoy weaving them all in at once.
@@meemamakes what was the pattern for your last round? I really like the blankets border but I can't figure out how to do it
this was very helpful but im pretty new to this and the blanket i’m planning on making is only one color, whenever i finish a round would i need to like cut it and restart somewhere else like you did changing colors or is there a way that i can just keep on going around without having to do that? if there is do you have a video about it or any other recommendations for me because this seem like so much fun!😊
Hi Claire, do you don’t need to cut at the end of each round, it’s quite easy to continue on with one ball of yarn. This will actually be the next tutorial I’m uploading to RUclips but I’m currently off sick so not sure when this will be, I’m hoping for next week. I have an older tutorial on tiktok showing it if you can’t wait or you could search for “one colour granny square” on RUclips.
What a beautiful blanket. Love it. What kind of yarn did you use for making it?
It’s stylecraft special DK and all the colours are listed in the video description 🧶🍁
Thankyou so much for the response. I think I will make it ASAP.
@@deborrahangelique9442 yay, good luck on your blanket journey 😊
If I'm using a Varigated colored yarn I wouldn't need to cut and change colors. So how would I Continue to the next granny square round? Thank for your help with this issue.
There is no need to cut at the end of each round. I have a tutorial showing how to make a square without cutting here: ruclips.net/video/wscK3pz33S8/видео.htmlsi=JwQVVmAd2SS6C7fz
Question- I’m making my blanket ( thank you)! I ran out of the green and can order it but not arriving for 3 weeks. Do I wait or use a different green? Ty
Up to you! If you like how it looks with the other colours then go for it 😊
Use ur own brain and realise she isn’t forcing u to use these colours. U want it to match then wait if u don’t no one cares
Just to make sure I understand, you flip the work in between each row so there’s not a ‘wrong side’, correct?
Yes it is reversible
do you have to tie off the yarn even if your making it all the same color?
No you don’t. I have a tutorial for a one colour granny square here that shows how ruclips.net/video/wscK3pz33S8/видео.htmlsi=FnctemyYXxSxCgBh
Enjoy and I’m here if you have any questions 😊
can i do this pattern with weight 6 yarn?
Thank you so much for this great tutorial!! I am planning to make this blanket for my next project! How many grams/balls of yarn would you recommend for a big blanket?
It depends on the size of the yarn and your definition of "big blanket". I find that around 3600m of DK weight yarn makes a blanket that easily covers a single bed with overhang, 4800m will cover a double bed, and 6000m will cover a Super King bed with overhang.
@@meemamakes thank you!
Hi question if i am using diffrent brand yarn what ply should i use?
I used DK weight yarn aka category 3 here: www.craftyarncouncil.com/standards/yarn-weight-system
However you can use any yarn you like for this blanket 🥰
If I was using one color would I still turn my work after each round and just work the opposite direction?
Yes this is what I do, it is on my to do list to do a one colour granny square tutorial for RUclips. I am filming later this week so will do it then.
I have 2 tutorials on it on tiktok if you can’t wait but I do not turn these squares over between rows in these tutorials to keep them simpler as tiktok has time limits. vm.tiktok.com/ZGJHT697u/ and vm.tiktok.com/ZGJHTLEvF/
Okay no worries!! This was a great tutorial and super informative! I just got a little confused with how to turn it when not fastening off between color changes but if it’s the same as I would turn a normal row-to-row blanket then that makes sense!
@@boldergymnast42 there’s lots of ways of doing it with granny squares, as long as you stick to the same formula for groups of 3 double crochet it will work out 😁 I’m glad you’ve found this tutorial so helpful!
Gorgeous colors - what yarn is that?
It's stylecraft special dk, if you look at the bottom of the video description I list the colours used
I like the way you explain the formula as a reminder. Great teaching methods 🫶
Glad it was helpful!
Would you be able to show what to do if you don’t change colors?
Yes it is on my “to film” list. If you can’t wait I did make one on tiktok a little while ago here: vm.tiktok.com/ZGJCkDwDk/
hiiii sorry im late but how many balls of yarn do i need to make this blanket ?
I used 13 balls - 1 of each colour plus an extra ball of Camel for the border. I had an average of 1/3rd of a ball of each colour left when my blanket was finished.
Do you still have to cut and tie if you don’t want to change colour??
No you don’t, you can just continue to the next round. I am working on a one colour granny tutorial 🥰
Thank you 😊
Do you turn the granny square every new row?
Yes that’s what I recommend doing to keep the sides straight
Hello I have a question ⁉️ do you always start on the sides does it lay better that way? I've seen others start in the corners and mine buckles somewhat I've taken it aparte 3 times now !!!
I’m not quite sure I understand the question. I do start in the corners on each round. By buckles do you mean it curls inwards? If you’re in our Facebook group I’m happy to help and offer advice if you post a photo
@@meemamakes I'm not in Facebook but yes it kinda wants to fold. I seen this video it looks like you start into the side of three not the corners of 3 ,2,3 I think that's how to explain it somewhat 🤔
@@meemamakes if so I'll just watch it over and over til I get it learning a New stitch isn't always easy
@@tinagruver7095 do you mean in round 2?
With the curling it usually means too few stitches for the width of the square - so either you’re missing corners or your stitch tension is much shorter than mine. I’d recommend checking you are doing 4 corners and if you’re struggling to identify them, pop a stitch marker in them and move it up each round. In terms of if your stitches are a different tension, you could go up a hook size or add a chain on the square sides between your groups of 3dc
@@meemamakes yes I understand now thank you kindly 😊
How many rows did you do to make it that big? 😊
54, it’s just over 1m square 🙂
I will make this granny square for my square dinner table…
I purchased the 12 colors to do this… what color did you use for the boarder though?? It doesn’t look like the gold…
It’s camel, I did eat into a second ball of it to finish the last round of the border.
@@meemamakes thank you…
hey, I wonder how many warn did u use for this?
13 balls of Stylecraft Special DK, if you scroll to the bottom of the video description there is all the colours I used
I wish you showed how to do this without changing colors. What to do if you used one color. Because then things would be different when you went to the new row.
Hi Jacquelyn, Thankyou for your comment. This is on my to do list of tutorials to film! I do have 2 tutorials showing this on my tiktok if you want the links?
vm.tiktok.com/ZGJHcgCpw/
Hi, when I start doing my granny square ( any granny square at all really ) it sometimes starts to curl into itself and ends up looking like a little hat before I even start to change colours, does anyone know how I could stop this from happening? Xxx
This happens when the perimeter of your work is too small for the area. I wonder if your stitches are differently sized than mine (everyone has a different tension when they crochet and small differences in technique can make vastly different stitch sizes, there is no right or wrong though, just different!). So in your case you might benefit from working a ch1 between your 3dc groups along the sides of your square to increase the perimeter of your square . I'd recommend trying it and seeing if that solves the issue, if not then it might be worth playing with hook size.
There a different way to make a granny square blanket. Instead of keep cutting your yarn and go every corner, every time I finish one row I just slip stitch each stitches till you get to the corner and then you just chain 3 and keep crocheting the granny square til you get the size you want. So much easy then keep cutting your yarn.
Yes, I have a tutorial for a one colour granny square linked, although the way I show how to do it is different than how you describe and it means you always start in the very corner to hide the starting chain and no need to slip stitch across stitches. This tutorial just for if you want to change colours each round 🙂
how can I keep my sides straight when making a blanket? I keep crying and frogging Please help me I don't know what to do
Turning over and working from the other side on each row will keep the sides straight. I explain why in this tutorial. If you are doing this and following this tutorial and your side still aren’t straight, I’d recommend posting a pic in the Meema Makes Crochet Community Facebook group and then me and the other experience crocheters can offer specific advice 😊
