It is with a smile I'm typing out this comment - been looking around for hours over this week and learning about the whole mirrorless world since I'm considering jumping in (currently 5D MK 4, my beloved one) and I just wanted to let you know... this was as if I was speaking to a friend, a friend with Great knowledge and experience in the matters of these cameras and photography! Lovely tests and really lovely energy!!
Hey Alex, just came across your year old video R6 II vs R5, thanks for a sweet and short yet insightful presentation. I have been a R6 fan and saving to buy one, I’ve seen several videos on R6II VS other mirror less cameras none picks the categories you selected and delved into since I am still trying to get magnificent photos without editing, editing will come later when I am content with the basics. Thanks very much once again. Insightful.
I have had all of the 5 series, then switched over to R. Have had all of those as well. Currently, I have the R5 and R6 and absolutely love the R6. It is my go to more often than the R5 - when I do not need those extra MPs. I have been considering switching the R5 for the R6M2 and that story continues. Difficult to make the decision. The seldom times I use the 45MP sensor are for landscape images or weddings (outdoor). But even a wedding these days does not require a massive sensor. There are options within LR and PS that will allow you to double an image size - almost as good as a large sensor image.
Glad I watched this. I’ve had the r6 mark ii for around a year now and the image quality for stills is absolutely superb. I shoot wildlife and the eyes on the subjects are perfectly shaped, glossy, crystal clear, smooth and just beautiful. I’m just starting to use the video but I’m lost with all this Clog stuff. I use Lightroom to edit stills but it’s not much good for editing video. If anyone has any Apps for editing Clog video I’d be grateful. Would be great if they were free or relatively cheap to buy.
Great vid. Have the R6 ii and was going to purchase the R5 ii when it comes out in 2024 but not now. Instead I am keeping my R6 and buying a pair of Scansonic Q3 speakers for my music system.
The 40 FPS elecotrnic shutter got me. I just ordered the R6MK2 half an hour ago with an extra battery. The fact that it has a newer sensor with greater read-out speed, 40 FPS in elec and has better thermals .. I had to submit
I have the R5 and use it mostly for wildlife and landscapes, the 45mp makes a huge difference then. Am thinking of getting the R6 II for a backup and low light. It's pretty simple the lower the mp the better the low light, always been that way. The higher the mp the more you can crop that 500mm, 600mm shot.
I have a 5D Mark IV decided to add (not replace) either an R6 II or R5 to my stable, mainly for the better tracking when shooting birds and wildlife. I will keep (for now) the 5D4 as it's still a great camera and I love the way it feels. I really wanted the R5 for its increased resolution and ability to crop more, but dang, the $1400 price difference. So, I actually had the R6II in the cart when I decided to go take one more look at the R5. That's what I saw the store had just posted a lightly used R5 with 24-105 RF lens that was just a little more than $400 more than the R6II and lens I had in the cart. It was used, but 9+ condition with low shutter count. At that price, I could afford to by the store's "1 or 2 year protection plan" since this used R5 didn't have the Canon warranty. I thought about it for about 7.6 milliseconds, and bought the lightly used R5. A bit of a gamble I know, and had that used deal not popped up, I would have gotten the R62.
So in other words I made a good choice. I was waiting for the R5 M2 but wasn’t impressed for $4299. Got the R6 m2 to replace my RP instead. Low light was my biggest requirement. Plus I got the 24-105 F4 and was still cheaper than the R5 body only.
I really like my Canon R6 mark11. Tracking the eyes and quality of pictures in different lighting are the best. My poor Canon 5dmark iv is setting in case.
The R6ii has the best color science of amy camera ive ever seen. Its gorgeous out of camera. The light fall of and microcontrast is incredible, and that was a specific goal of Canons when developing that 24mp sensor, which is used in the R8 and R3 also (a stacked version of the same sensor design). That said, i would love to have that sensor but the R5 has a CF Express card slot. I just bought a 1tb angel bird card for $200. Try buying 1tb in v90 sd cards, see how expensive that is. As nice as it looks, its not big enough to ignore the practicality of fhe R5 workflow.
Great stuff here. I've used Canon DSLRs since 2003, and have never really thought about moving to mirrorless. But I find myself getting more and more tempted to add the R62 to my bag. I'm starting to think I'm going to take the plunge, perhaps in the new year.
I haven't been shooting as long as you, but I have been a full time working professional for almost 2 years. Mirrorless Canon vs DSLR Canon feels like playing a game with cheat codes on. It makes things SO easy mate. I shoot weddings so being in unpredictable, uncontrollable environments constantly, the AF systems on these mirrorless (R5/R/6 and after) really makes my job easier and lets me get better results/way less missed shots. Do yourself a favour and do it quickly.
I've been using r6ii for a few days now testing video autofocus and really impressed. sticks to subject much better than a nikon z8 i was using. really liked the image coming out of that camera but video autofocus was a real pain especially shooting sports (indoor basketball and sideline lacrosse shooting). Plus the weight of the z8 and lenses was absurd. I have an R5 on the way to test but feel i'm going to be hard pressed to move on from 6ii.
The only thing clear to me is that there is a distinct difference in the needs of wildlife/macro/astro photographers vs wedding/event/human photographers.
I own a R6 MK II and love it but I am thinking on getting the R5. I tend to crop a lot because the type of photography I do and the R5 should fit me better.
In many ways I think the R6-Mk-II is better than the R5, but rumors are flying that there is an R5 Mk-II coming that's expected to have a stacked sensor like the R3 and many other goodies making it "near flagship" as the world prepares for the R1.
there is some ways its worse... IPB vs ALL-i (you cant ALL-i even into ninja v with r6/6ii), megapixels if you work in macro or cropping for photos, 4k 120 is way better when pixel peeping (and in studio or outdoors in light presented here you can have similar results with MFT cameras no matter lol) btw i am R6 owner
In my opinion the focus should not be on video performance. For professional videos there are much better options to buy, eg. Canon XA-series. R5 and R6ii are especially for taking pictures!
I own an 7dII and a 5dIII. I disliked the R-Series except the R5. But now the R6II seems to be perfect. For wildlife I'd prefer 32 MP. Now I'm unsure which one to replace. I like the full frame of the 5dIII but also the crop and the AF points of the 7dII.
That’s a really helpful review, Alex. I just bought the R6ii and agree. Low light is great and the slow motion much better than in the preproduction models. First I thought I should get the R5C as a b cam for the C70 but now I am happy about the R6ii especially because of the great battery life. But would you say the oversampled codecs of the R5C in 4k are still much superior to the the 4k of the R6ii?

This was very helpful. Thank you. I’m a Nikon user and I currently possess the Nikon D800 E and two Nikon D 500s. I’ve been happy with my camera equipment but now that I’m getting into cinematography the auto focus tracking on Nikon is not as good as Canon and I was checking out the EOSR which I’m considering getting however, I’m not crazy about that having a one memory card slot so I was questioning if I should get the are five or six however, I don’t want 45 megapixel and from your comparison of the R6 mark two in low light conditions and the sharpness I will most likely be going with the Mark II R6 and when I’m ready selling my Nikon’s equipment to switch over to Canon. This video is very helpful. Thank you very much.

Hi Alex, I want to do an upgrade for my canon 550D I’m not a professional photographer still learning. I want to do pet photography and landscaping, wildlife as well. I was thinking about 90D but it’s not full frame, then I thought about 5D mark IV and it’s very heavy for my hands to be honest though it’s a good camera. I never used a mirrorless and it will be a big change for me I know that the future probably with mirrorless cameras for sure. I can’t afford R5 unfortunately but thinking about R6 … please let me know what would you recommend? thank you 🙏🏻☺️

2 excellent cameras but both overpriced. I have the Canon 2000D at about £400 in the UK. It's almost impossible to tell the difference in photo quality. I don't need all the whistles and bells.
The deal breaker for me is not having a full size HDMI port. Tired of the problems I've had with my existing camera. Haw do you deal with that, do you use an external monitor? Thanks for the video.
At this point since I just tested out the R6 Mark II vs the R5 when it comes to video, I would go with the R6 II because it sticks with the subjects more than the R5.
the r6ii is absolutely and definitively sh1te in low light focusing. Did an dancing event and could not hit the mark most of the time, which is embarrassing for a paid gig. Had to revert to the 5diii I had luckily brought along and THAT worked better. And yes, I tried different AF modes etc and was on case 2.
can I shoot 4k hq in the r6 2? I love the hq on the r5 its son sharp when you zoom, but according to you the the r6 mark 2 is sharper than the r5 hq 4k, is it correct?
No need for a "HQ" mode on the R6 II because it's always in downsample 6K to 4K mode. The R5 had this because of overheat issues where the 8K to 4K would overheat so they had a lower quality mode that had pixel binning.

Just picked up my R6 MK2 this past Tuesday. Quite enjoying it so far and coming from a 5D MK4 which I still have as well.
I have the 5D MK4 and wanna get the R6 MK2 as well! Is it a major upgrade for video and photos? I do IG lifestyle content if that helps.
I'm planning to get one today to replace my 5D Mk4. I'm a video shooter. U think it's worth the upgrade?

the r6ii is absolutely and definitively sh1te in low light focusing.
It looks like that way on my results which is crazy!, also youtube takes time to render my 4k video upload.
No need for a "HQ" mode on the R6 II because it's always in downsample 6K to 4K mode. The R5 had this because of overheat issues where the 8K to 4K would overheat so they had a lower quality mode that had pixel binning.
Conclusion: R6 mkii is BETTER than R5.
Does the new R6 overheat?
That video is coming soon!
How is the r6ii FHD120p compared to the r6i?
On the r6i it was very bad!
Yes it was , I love this version its much improved. I sold my Canon R6 a while back
Video is better on R5.
