    The term PADS (post Avatar depression syndrome) was coined due to the very real depression experienced after seeing this movie. People were legit depressed, even suicidal, having to return to this world after seeing such a beautiful and fulfilling world. Still get a little twinge sometimes while watching it.

    There's a director's cut that fleshes out a lot of details, particularly why Natiri wanted to kill Jake. Natiri and her little sister had been learning English at Grace's school for some time (probably a year or two) when the sister attacked a bulldozer destroying the forest. In retaliation, the soldiers tracked the sister back to the school and ending up killing her and several other young Navi. There's a scene where Grace shows Jake the school building, all shot up, and explains what happened. IMO, this scene adds a TON to the story and there's a few others that do too.
    For anyone who enjoyed this movie and wants to watch it again leading up to the sequel, I highly suggest watching the Director's Cut/Extended Version.

    • @lilscenechick1995
      @lilscenechick1995 2 года назад +9

      I wonder why they cut that out??? It's pretty important to Natiri's story and it explains why Grace had to leave the school.

      The same Director's Cut also provides more background to the humans and their reason of being on Pandora. The theatrical release that Dasha watched here is, dare I say, dumbed down to simplistic "aliens-good-humans-bad". The deleted scenes featured in the Director's Cut provides more moral ambiguity to the whole human/Navi conflict, with the RDA being shown as less of a greedy megacorporation seeking to profit at the expense of natives and more of just doing whatever it takes to provide a desperate humanity with a much-needed resource.
      With that context, there's no longer such a clear distinction between heroes and villains, both sides simply fighting for their species and way of life. It also makes Jake look like less of a hero, and more like a profoundly-selfish man who puts his love interest and his captivation with the native environment above billions of his own conspecifics back on Earth whose very survival depend on the success of the Pandoran mining operation.

    • @littleredruri
      @littleredruri 2 года назад +5

      @@CyberWar666 I still see Jake as ultimately in the right here. He has this rationale of the humans having destroyed their own world, and not wanting to let them destroy another beautiful ecosystem to fix it. The humans had their chance. I agree wholeheartedly with that sentiment.

    • @CyberWar666
      @CyberWar666 2 года назад +3

      @@littleredruri An understandable if misguided sentiment on his part.
      The story of Avatar is fundamentally that of the colonization of North America (or rather the leftist interpretation of it). A society of noble savages live in peace and harmony with beautiful nature until the evil imperialist colonizers from an ugly and polluted technological society arrive to strip-mine the place for everything its worth. One of the invaders becomes disgusted with the ways of his society, goes native, helps the natives beat back the invaders and lives happily ever after. Or so the movie wants us to believe.
      Yet Jake ultimately represents just a tiny, misguided fragment of the vast human species. While his betrayal did a lot to damage the human colonization project, it is ultimately just a temporary setback. For every human the Navi killed or chased away, there's a million desperate and angry humans back on Earth eager to take their place. If the locals and native wildlife prove too implacable, the humans ultimately have the technology to just sterilize the place with orbital bombardment and get what they came for one way or another.
      So Jake is ultimately fighting for a cause that was lost already when humans and Navi made first contact. Unless the Navi have the plot armor of a star dreadnought, their fate is already decided. In a clash between primitives and industrial civilizations, industry and progress has won every single time, and the best outcome for the natives has been confinement to reservations. That is the inevitability of progress - it comes whether one wants it or not, and cares not for such notions as "right' or "fair".
      I guess we'll have to wait and see if the creators of Avatar 2 will have come to that conclusion as well, or taken the easy road and just given Jake and his blue alien buddies enough plot armor to weather out everything humanity has to throw at them.

    Hi Dasha!
    Some things to consider;
    - Generally speaking, the 3-D effect is most effective when used to show depth (as opposed to throwing things at the screen). The cameras used to film this movie (invented for this movie by James Cameron) capture the depth in an amazing way.
    - When this movie is re-released in theaters, please make it a point to see it in 3-D. (there are precious few movies I recommend seeing in 3-D... This one is at the top of the list)

      True. A good sign for a CGI heave movie is if you can pause it at any moment of the movie and it could be a wallpaper or really beautiful concept art. I think that is true for this movie. I don`t think Avatar 2 will be as breathtaking because we have been following CGI develop for 13 years and our eyes have been watching the progression and have gotten used to picture perfect CGI by now, so the feeling you got from watching the first movie will be really hard to replicate.

He was just more inclined to pick the marines because he was one. He really was just going with the flow. Yes, he gave information about the tree to the head people but it's a tree. A tree can only have so much structure so they would have easily destroyed it without his intel as well.

    I always thought it was interesting that James Cameron turned his movie "Aliens" upside-down to make "Avatar." This time the aliens are the heroes and the humans are the problem. Some of the other clues are casting Sigourney Weaver and the hero fighting the villain, who is in the mechanical suit this time. I felt that he had done this with the "Terminator" as well, when in T2, the Terminator is a hero and our heroine, Sarah Connor, runs the risk of becoming the thing she hates, a Terminator in her own right. That's why I think James Cameron's action films are always a cut above, there's a lot of layers in the stories and a lot detail in every aspect.

Also I loved the way you described everything and how you liked all the night visuals! They were my favorite visuals too and made the jungle of Pandora so much more magical! Hopefully when the sequel comes out soon you won't wait to react to it here, but instead go with some friends or something and watch it in the theater to experience it like it's meant to be. Keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing what you have in store for next week.

    I recently started watching your reactions and so far love them. This film however is one that really resonates with me on a personal level.
    I'm of Native American (Indigenous American) decent. My ancestry is traced back to the Apache tribes of New Mexico. This film hits hard due to the cultural similarities as well as the similar story of how Natives were treated by early settlers who came in to lay claim to Native lands.
    This was honestly an amazing movie and a masterpiece of storytelling. I was really glad you watched it and made a reaction to it. I loved your reaction and commentary.

    The thing this movie did really well was 3D at the cinema. Outside of that it is not an award winning movie, not the worst but the 3D is where it mastered everything so hard. It started 3D mania but no one else wanted to put the effort into making as good 3D content so the 3D fad faded just as it did in the 70s.
