On the lush alien world of Pandora live the Na'vi, beings who appear primitive but are highly evolved. Because the planet's environment is poisonous, human/Na'vi hybrids, called Avatars, must link to human minds to allow for free movement on Pandora. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paralyzed former Marine, becomes mobile again through one such Avatar and falls in love with a Na'vi woman (Zoe Saldana). As a bond with her grows, he is drawn into a battle for the survival of her world.
Avatar (marketed as James Cameron's Avatar) is a 2009 epic science fiction film directed, written, co-produced, and co-edited by James Cameron and starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver. It is the first installment in the Avatar film series. It is set in the mid-22nd century, when humans are colonizing Pandora, a lush habitable moon of a gas giant in the Alpha Centauri star system, in order to mine the valuable mineral unobtanium. The expansion of the mining colony threatens the continued existence of a local tribe of Na'vi, a humanoid species indigenous to Pandora. The title of the film refers to a genetically engineered Na'vi body operated from the brain of a remotely located human that is used to interact with the natives of Pandora

Noticed you mentioned western expansion and this is an adaptation of the classic "cowboys vs indians" story. To me the Na'vi, Omaticaya clan, resemble the Lakota Sioux indian tribes. You'll see other representations with other clans later in the coming part 2. According to Cameron, these representations were intentional. They even went to the "leaders" for permission to represent their culture.

    • @sillyjellyfish2421
      @sillyjellyfish2421 Год назад +42

That was the point. He didn't know that. He was told that he is flying to Pandora a WEEK before he got launched up. He didn't have time to learn anything beyond the bare minimum.
What he knew as a marine however was that once the light is out, it's OUT, so he made that torch before he was in a complete darkness. If you look closely, you see that during that time it was still dusk. The bioluminiscence isn't strong enough to shine over that.
Then he was blinded by the fire he (rightfully by Earth's standards) made to get through the night, so his eyes didn't have time to get used to the dimness of everything around him. During the fight, the last sunlight disappeared and the bioluminiscence kicked in, but he didn't see the glow until AFTER the fire was out and his eyes had about 10 seconds to get used to that.
Both his actions and the reveal of the light make a perfect sense. I remember seeing the movie for the first time and just thinking that the blue moss and deep purple plants when Neytiri kills that one vounded dog were just the "blue light filter" for night scenes and i only realized what was going on as Jake did.
Which is exactly what JC was going for, so well done!

The most common complaint I heard when this movie was still fairly new was that it was "just the Pocahontas story but the natives win." As you guys mentioned, yes, it's a story that's been told before. The difference is how well the story is told and the visuals that are included. No, it's not a new story, but the way it's told is and, to me, and a lot of other people, well worth watching.

Tsahelu is a bond- a deep connection between mind and soul
Eywa is real, she is essentially the moon’s consciousness- ‘made up of all living things’
Unobtanium is actually a real scientific term for a theoretical ‘perfect’ element- in reality people would have come up with a different name for it but I think it was kept for the movie so it made more sense
Just like how the Ikran had to choose Jake, Toruk also chose him, during the flight chase you could see him aiming for Jake not Neytiri
Tsu Tey was originally supposed to mate with Neytiri’s older sister Sylwanin, but the extended edition explains why she wasn’t there
Tsu Tey’s death was more harrowing in the extended edition- it made me cry lol
If I’m correct, before the humans arrived on Pandora and the Na’vi started learning English, the Na’vi didn’t have a word for ‘lie’
After this movie came out, people began to suffer from what was eventually labelled Post Avatar Depression Syndrome- people connected to this movie deeply and seeing how the Na’vi live compared to their real lives really effected them, reality simply couldn’t live up to the beauty of Pandora

And a bunch of other stuff. Essentially everyone who dies gets more character development so their deaths are way more impactful. Its awhole nother 15 minutes of great Avatar stuff

About the brutality of the moment - there are 2 specific scenes that make me tear up like a baby each time and both times it is because of the sound. In this movie it was the first time i have seen anyone using the sound before the scene cut to keep the story connected.
Like that time when the cremating fire is actually the shuttle engine, or when Jake looks at arrows in that truck's tires and we already hear "you're not in Kansas anymore" and dozens of others.
And yet, there is exactly ONE scene where the sound just cuts off suddenly and entirely - when the Hometree is falling and we see various groups running away at once, there is a moment when a part of the trunk is falling on a group of women and children, and the moment when the camera (POV of someone standing there) would be hit by the tree, both the scene and the sound just cuts. Like dozens of na'vi, we the audience just get squished with them amd we are gone. I cry every time.
The 2nd tear hell is shortly after, when Neytiri tells Jake to never come back. I swear that i have never seen another character in any movie ever before or after (with the exception of The way of water of course) cry like Neytiri did here. Holywood is so affraid of the image of ugly, angry, snot and tears and blood covered female characters looking broken and absolutely unsexy as they break emotionally, because they think that it scares the male audience away. And yet here we have Zoey, ugly, grieving, angry, dirty, wailing with raspy skipping and broken voice craddling the mutilated body of her father... And i cry again.

Oak is right. James Cameron had written Avatar before he did Titanic, but the technology wasn't good enough to do it. He actually spent time with Peter Jackson during the filming of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, because Peter and Weta had developed and invented a lot of new technology, including portable, shoulder cams that could capture motion capture (developed to film Andy Serkis as Gollum) and that helped him to finally film Avatar. Also, he hired Weta digital for the effects.

James Cameron had the concept, world building, and early scripts for Avatar since 1994, but the tech was not up to the task until at least 2005. The gap between the first and second films was because of the needed tech development for under water scenes, which wasn't there until 10-12 years later.
Remember when Turuk attacked Jake and Ney'Tiri, Turuk was entirely focused on Jake, which shows that Turuk chose him during that attack when it tried to kill him, just as his Ikran chose him by attacking him.
Also, Eytukan was played by Wes Studi (Magua from "Last of the Mohicans"), Mo'at was played by C.C. Pounder (Warehouse 13), Selfridge was played by Giovanni Rabisi (Gone in 60 Seconds), and Quaritch was played by Stephen Lang (Terra Nova).
When I saw it in theaters, first thing I did when I left the theater was go pick up the soundtrack. I also have the theatrical release and the extended collectors edition of the movie.

Edit add on: I see some people saying that it took the last thirteen years to make avatar 2 but that’s not the case. Production for Avatar: The Way of Water started in 2017 and not only did they do the sequel but they also filmed Avatar 3 along side it. Again haha James Cameron confirmed in an interview Avatar 3 is pretty much done and ready to go and they’re currently working on Avatar 4.
