Ironically, the novel isn't really a parody/satire, although it also doesn't have the direct allusions to the Reich. That was a deliberate Verhoeven choice. Heinlein had.....opinions. Not surprising, given the religion he founded.
Saw this opening day. And, yeah, it's not just another action movie... it's got some satirical teeth to it. Which was impressive considering the book it's based on... where the whole Citizen and colonialism aspect is totally serious (the author legit believed it). Please react to a movie called How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies. It's a Thai movie, it centered around a young male who, after received news that his grandma got diagnosed with cancer, decided to take care of his grandma while he himself trying to secure his inheritance from his grandma. This movie is a seriously tear-jerker movie, full of family-themed lessons and, I can dare to say, this movie is a lot better than any family movies that you've ever seen or reacted before.

I absolutely loved the discussion after the reaction. You guys absolutely nailed it. This is why you guys are great. You see the parallels, you don’t get distracted by the ooohh and aaahhs of the cgi, you really pay attention to the story and what Paul Verhoven did with this story.
As a young teen I thought Carmen was gorgeous. Maturing as an adult is realizing Dizz is the better choice for Rico over Carmen because she pushes him to be better not just because she’s into him unlike “for the streets” Carmen.
I can't say her relationship with Sheen helped her in my own eyes IRL and is one of the reasons I don't want to know personal details of actors because - baggage.
I have made similar comments on reactions to this movie :D Carmen was stunning to me back when I first saw this on release but over the years it has definitely been Dizz that has grown in her attractiveness to me.
Guy is surrounded by absolute bros. Zim as the hard-as-nails but fair instructor, Ace is the friend we all need - loyal and a complete goofball, Sugar who's got his back even as he's down on the floor gutted like a fish and even Raczak knows to give him and Dizzy some extra time because who knows if they're around tomorrow. I wish for everybody to have those type of people around them.

He’s not really taking school propaganda seriously, and when asked if he believes the lessons he’s not sure and hasn’t made up his mind. He’s a highly competitive jock, but he’s sentimental and wants a committed relationship. He joins the military to chase after his love interest, not because he’s “falling in line,” and he realizes that too, telling his parents he’s been an idiot and wanting to come home. It’s the reversal of fortunes and circumstances, the rewards that seem to come from compliance, and the exposure to “men of character” who nevertheless do brutal things that radicalizes Rico into falling in line.
The whole point of it is him having opposite character development lol. In the beginning Rico has inclines of 'maybe this isn't the way we should be doing things'. By the end he's a full blown brainwashed soldier willing to fight to the death for the very system who very likely killed his parents, not the bugs. The movie's super in your face about the Nazi fascist tones with the "protagonists", down to NPH basically being dressed as a full blown SS officer by the end lol. The movie's a total satire on militarization. I love the movie forsure lol, but it's definitely misunderstood...
It's definitely that kind of film that can be misconstrued or misunderstood - but if you look closely, it's so clear what it's trying to say!! It absolutely deserves the cult classic label!
Almost everyone "got it" when it came out because they had seen Robocop. The ones who didn't were millennials who saw it as kids, which is fair enough, but this narrative you're putting forward years later is completely false.
iirc this movie even spawned a 3D animated tv series airing when I was kid. But it played the action adventure straight losing all the commentary the movie had
You guys are the BEST film/movie reviewers on YT imo. Always so positive/fun and fair. So many people of your age group on YT also reviewing films don't seem to be able to show normal emotions during watching certain scenes in films, which is what we watch for, to see if the scenes affect others in a similar way. No matter the scene they just keep trying to come out with funny/sarcastic/empty thoughts and even laughing at sad deaths. You always get this stuff right and it's always great to see you both be genuinely moved at times from the film scenes. Huge fan!

This reminds you to Helldivers because the ex CEO and founder of Helldivers studio wanted to make his dream Starship Troopers game and that is Helldivers 2. Something important about that is that Sony has the rights to every kind of Starship Troopers media outside the publication of the book (this is based in a book) and Sony is also owner of Helldivers so both franchises can exists without legal problems because they come from the same owner. Casper Van Dien the actor who plays Rico was very vocal about how much he liked Helldivers 2 when the game became one of the big hits of this year.
I'm honestly in disbelief that Ari, as a Helldivers 2 player, didn't seem to expect the extreme resemblance, because I felt like that was ALL I WAS HEARING about it when the game was blowing up big time haha. I guess having seen the movie I latched onto all the comparisons, and having not seen it he didn't really hang on to that connection.
The CG in this movie is absolutely incredible. The leap from Jurassic Park with a handful of shots to this - just 4 years later - where there are THOUSANDS of CG creatures is stunning. And like JP it's the time and care and attention to detail that makes it look so damn good.
true! ..im pretty sure each of those bugs was hand animated too, that it wasnt until LoTR that crowds could be mass produced by way of procedural CGI that looked as good as this..
Fun fact: JP actually helped get the vfx in the movie to look the way they do. JP had been the transition point at ILM from puppets to digital. but the animators were used to do digital effects, only stop motion and animatronics. to get around that they created the D.I.D. or Dinosaur input Device. it was literally a puppet they could animated like stop motion, but it was rigged with sensors connected to the computer, allowing them to animate the 3d dinosaurs like you would stop motion. For this movie, they took the D.I.D (renamed digital input device) and modified to not just look like the bugs, but since technology had progress, they could actually animate it in real time like a hand puppet. (instead of just move a little, click a button to save it, move a little more, click, etc) so they could do complex animation then just save the entire this.
One of my most favorite reactions from you guys. I loved how I could see on Denise's face when she started really questioning things and how dark it gets lol. Hands down my favorite Verhoeven movie. The man's a genius.

I actually got to ask Xander's actor a couple of questions in an early, *early* online chat forum. He mentioned that the robotic Xander was extremely disturbing because the puppeteers kept making it look at him while he'd walk around the set. And that his favorite scene in the movie is the base attack scene on P because it was Paul Verhoven's tribute to the film Zulu.

yeah thing is... the bugs really ARE the agressors in the conflict, not seeing humans as sentient beings by their metrics. So the bugs throwing the rock at humanity, and attacks on the bugs being for the safety of humanity are in fact NOT propaganda.
All this time (saw this in the theater) I NEVER caught the Shijumi foreshadowing "my father said it would cost an arm and a leg" - and then he gets immediately dismembered. Wow.
I'm so glad you guys understood what the movie was going for ! That made the discussion afterwards very enjoyable ! Personally something I find fascinating is, theres no evidence that the bugs actually sent the asteroid that destroyed Buenos Aires. When they show where Earth is compared to the bug planets, they're very distant from each other and earlier they do bring up that the planet has defenses for stuff like that.
Yeah it's pretty much 100% certain that it was actually the Federation that sent the asteroid. Klendathu is on the other side of the Galaxy. It would have taken millions of years for an asteroid to reach Earth. Not to mention how tf you'd even calculate the trajectory.
and you can argue the ship making contact could have altered the trajectory of the asteroid in a minute way that at those distances could mean the difference between hitting earth or not
that issue with this is were applying know logic outside the of movie to logic inside the movie. The bugs have attacked humans and are violent towards humans. Yeah we only see one side of it but we dont see anything else that comes close to hinting that the federation is faking attacks inside the movie it is all trying to apply outside logic and thinking.
Always thought Dina was very beautiful. Also from the start of this movie I rooted for Dizzy and Johnny to end up together. So disappointing how that ended.

I always snort at the asteroid scene when the captain compliments Zander and Carmen for preventing a full head-on crash by their quick reaction and due to their skill. Carmen looked so smug and pleased with herself - when it was her who brought them into the path of the asteroid in the first place by changing their course of her own volition, after only being on the ship for three weeks and without even telling anyone about it.
True, however how could she have predicted that streamlining the route and being efficient would lead them to a completely unforseeable event, that asteroid could have just as easily been in their original path before the changes.
Yeah really. Thats like taking a huge shit on someones face, but then bragging about how you're such a gentleman because you helped wipe their face clean.
It's a deeper scene to show how smart the bugs are. Carmen reprograms the ship to the optimal course, the optimal course the bugs already had the asteroid on.

I actually saw this as a teenager when it first came to theaters. It was just a fun space movie to me then. I saw it again after college and this was post 9/11 and all the media and government was pushing the WAR on Terror and the war in Iraq. I definitely got the subtext and how deep this film actually is.
Exactly. This version of earth doesn’t just feature a one world government where one body controls the entire planet, it’s also a fascist military state. Not being able to vote unless you devote your life to the military? Horrifying and reprehensible. A further bit of commentary that goes over people’s heads is Buenos Aires, Argentina being populated by what we would call a bunch of rich white Americans. This is a hint at how this world government expanded and took over the planet in the first place, and the consequences thereof for the local populations in countries that were not traditionally white.
I saw it on a gigantic screen with thunderous sound. It's style has been imitated so much it's part of the Hollywood bloodstream now (that and ROBOCOP) so it's impossible for young'uns to comprehend how frakking HARD the gore and violence hit back in the day : it was gruesome as only foreign (TETSUO II : BODY HAMMER comes to mind,) or low-budget horror movies (10 000 MANIACS) were. It stayed with me for days.
It would suck. Everything that makes STARSHIP TROOPERS work has *_nothing_* to do with the bugs : Verhoeven could have made the same exact movie with zombies, or robots, or demons, or demonic SS officers who are zombie robots. Considering how Hollywood has lost any and all ability to tell coherent stories, I would have zero hope of anything remotely this intense getting made : we would end up with a fancy tech demo full of GenZ actors spouting pithy lines, smugly lecturing the audience on social issues, cribbing from other movies and generally walking around the set with bored faces. The writing is mostly garbage and they continue to rehash/remake older, more successful movies because they have no vision or creativity. And the constant virtue signaling crap makes me want to puke. My thinking was, despite this movie still looking fantastic (one of my favorites), we've come a long way since then, cinema/technology wise, and I'd love to see what a proper director and writer could do with this nowadays. If it was done right, with the right people, I still think it would be magnificent. If it was done with the people we currently have in Hollywood as some sort of lame rehash, yeah, I agree, it would suck pretty bad.
So awesome seeing people enjoying Paul Verhoeven. The book is not satire, but the movie makes changes that really work well for cinema! Interesting enough, the book was written in a few weeks in response to the possibility of stopping nuclear tests for the US. He doesn't glorify war though, but spends a lot of time in the book discussing morals and philosophy in regards to responsibility and citizenship etc. It also makes it clear that blindly serving is also not the answer, and gives examples of veterans standing up for good fights in society and how they handled it correctly.

When I heard about this movie, I wondered how they could have made an entertaining movie from it. This movie is entertaining but it's nothing like the book. The movie is really not that deep, but the book is in a very different way. Both are good but nothing alike in the questions that they put forth and how they fight their battles.

One really interesting thing most people don't get is the movie version is completely opposite of the tone and philosophy of the book it's based on, yet still works. The 90's CGI cartoon "The Roughneck Chronicles" is halfway between the book and the movie and is another extremely well done take on the story that's way better than a forgotten kids show has any right to be.

Fun Fact: the design of the main Arachnids was actually an alternate design for the Shriekers in _Tremors 2: Aftershocks_ that they didn't use due to being limited by their budget. But Tippet Studio (which worked on both films) decided to use the design for this film.

I remember watching this movie basically by accident. My father turned on the TV and it was just starting. I rolled my eyes but stayed. We couldn't believe how good it was❤ after that my father always called me to watch it together when it came on tv🎉
Starship Troopers was an iconic film that spawned a host of sequels (the 2nd one is pretty good), and inspired dozens of games and other films. Helldivers is one of those it inspired. Rico being declared K.I.A. was just an accidental clerical mistake in the paperwork. He was rescued by the Roughnecks offscreen and only suffered the leg injury.
13:55 Very glad you brought that up Ari. Helldivers is massively inspired by Starship Troopers, the Hunter bugs there are essentially the drone bugs in this movie. Casper Van Died - Rico has been invited on numerous interviews just for his expressions and opinions of the game that's basically a tribute to the movie, and he loves it :D
The foreshadowing in this movie is 🔥. Example: It's a cute moment when the little kid says "I'm doing my part too!" However, the final battle, when they're being supported by ACTUAL KIDS...😱

I open RUclips to put something on in the background and this is the very first thing that popped up. Good to know I'm not the only one doing my part!

Here's a fun fan theory: The Asteroid that hit Earth was going to miss, but was deflected by being hit by the ship Carmen was piloting, a ship that wouldn't have been in the path of said asteroid if she hadn't modified the nav. Ergo, Carmen is the reason the bugs were attacked.

When this came out, people didn’t really understand the meaning, but now people know looking back at it. It’s also based on the book with the same name by Robert A. Heinlein from 1959! It’s a REALLY good book.

This movie didn't had big budget, yet they pulled so many known Celebrities into it, CG was really impressive for it's time (better than what we're getting now), and the visual/practical effects are fantastic!
Sometimes if we step back and think of how a movie is interpreted by our minds and that is a direct result of those in charge, we can see where the money stops and the mind is responsible for our entertainment value. Verhoven understands value.
I am so sick of this seeing ridiculous comment about every older blockbuster. The film had a $100 million budget, it was one of the most expensive movies ever made at that point.
It's so great watching movies with smart people. You folks got all the important messages, even the more subtle ones. It's so frustrating when folks watch this, as you said, and are seeing literally rather than satire. Or sometimes they only get half the satire and are really confused. I became an instant Jake Busey fan for life from this movie haha. Such an intense look, and such a fun pivot from potential douchebag to absolute bro! The leer he gives as he plays the violin around them dancing is ICONIC.
I'm so happy you watched this movie. This movie, for me, was used as a bit of a foundation for other Human/Alien war movies and the overuse of the propaganda to show how humans are fighting for their lives against spieces that were being exterminated by them. Also, I completely agree with Ari about Dizz. She was the one for Rico (even knowing that she was going to die), she was the other half of him, pushing him to be better, fight for something that he believes in and even when he wins the day, she stood by him. After seeing this, I would highly recommend you watch Battle: LA. This was another great Human/Alien war movie that takes place in modern times and you get to see how the human characters learn and adapt.
The enemy cannot push the button if you have disabled his hand! I mutter "would you like to know more?" at the TV any time I see something vaguely propagandistic.
This movie was everything as a kid, I remember seeing the trailer and it blowing my mind! I was way too young to see it of course but it was the 90's! we all watched stuff way too old for us HAHA!. Aliens, Robocop and the rest. It molded us and opened our minds to sci-fi greatness.
Just about to get into this reaction and just wanted to make a few comments. I remember seeing this in the theater when it was first released and was surprised by the negative reaction it received but realized that people just didn't understand what it was really about and trying to achieve. The biggest surprise I had though was reading the book afterwards and seeing just how different the two were. I am honestly surprised they were even allowed to keep the title of Starship Troopers with how different they are. If you guys are into reading, I would suggest giving it a read.
You should check out the 3d animated series "Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers chronicles". its alot closer to the book then the movie is, and even features the other alien species from the book the film leaves out.

Most baffling fact about this movie : the visuals are just mindblowing perfect, and is still better then most of the stuff nowadays, and it's nearly 30 years old !
@@OfficialMediaKnights they spent $100 million making this movie, roughly $40 million more than Jurassic Park and making it one of the most expensive films ever made at that point. The studio gave the special effect houses enough time to do everything to the absolute best of their capabilities. Just like Universal and Jurassic Park.
RoboCop, total recall, and this film are the ultimate trilogy by Paul Verhoven. I absolutely love all three and was lucky enough to see all three theatrically.
I know you got the commentary but the back story is explained more in the video games etc. If you didn't catch the hint the starship troopers started the war. The space federation forcefully colonized the bug planets for land, resorts, new planets for the humans to live. They destroyed the bug homes and killed lots of them. The bugs were actually chill at first then got angry and retaliated. The propaganda and lies of the space federation just painted the bugs as savages who just attacked for no reason and just killing innocent people. The federation made anger and hatred towards the bugs ie the propaganda for everyone including kids killing the bugs when all they had to do was leave them alone. Of course the federation soldiers are dressed in Nazi like uniforms and are fascist for symbolism. Love the reaction. Glad y'all liked the movie

The later is still focused on the bugs but they give subtle hints about and deep dives into the federation. Including how they treat their own people and others.
Yeah..the Dark Horse comics actually tell a great story about the Mormon outpost and another one about Rasczak past and his encounters w/ the bugs for the first time.

Haha, it's good that you mentioned Helldivers (1-2) because they are based on Starship Troopers! There's a video of Casper Van Dien (Johnny Rico) reacting to Helldivers 2 and it's wholesome because he's a NERD when it comes to Starship Troopers, passionately so. He's one of those actors who fell in love with the franchise they starred in. Go watch the video, he will tell you all the cool things about STT. He even explains the differences between a civillian and a citizen 😂 He also got some behind the scenes fun facts and heartwarming stories surrounding the fans. This isn't the first film adaptation of STT, btw. There was an miniseries anime adaptation back in 1988 that are more true to the source book. The Verhoeven version spawned a couple of sequels that aren't so good but it also gave us a handful of 3D animated movies that are good! (also the game, Helldivers). Not just that, there was a 3D animated series back in 1999 called 'Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles' which somewhat a hybrid between the book and the movie. Fun fact: during test screening, a lot of people left notes on Denise Richard’s character because they didn’t like how flirty she was with the other guy. The movie was heavily edited around Rico and Carmen due to the audiences dislike of her. Someone even left a note on their card after leaving the screening that just said “Die bitch”
Some people really did not understand her and Rico's character arc. The entire point is that the two are not meant to be together. They both find people who fit so much better to them.

The discussion Y’all had was 100% on the money. Paul Verhoeven has confirmed it multiple times in interviews, fan discussions and at comic conventions.
One thing that often goes unnoticed is that there's no real difference between Citizens and Civilians other than the right to vote. Rico's parents are Civilians, but they have a nice house and seem to be doing very well financially. They're not 2nd class/under class like you might think. It's an interesting, and probably unrealistic, bit of world-building. Great reaction, thanks!!!
I always thought of the Rico family as board member level affluence. Making weapons or such in support yet independent of the government. Carmen's family seems to be struggling.

Civilian vs Citizen thing is based on Rome Republic
It's a holdover from the world of the book. The civilization in the books has no real discrimination. Civilians have all the rights of a citizen except for the right to vote and every civilian has a right to seek military service to earn that right to vote. The military does not turn people away based on race, religion, class, region of origin or even physical ability, the military will find something for them to do, and not every job in the military means combat.
@@Iymarra teacher, specifically for the required class "history and moral philosophy" was not a profession that you took to become a citizen, rather, it was a position that only citizens, not civilians were allowed to occupy. You're correct though in that there were other ways to gain citizenship, but they had to be dangerous and hard jobs, like testing out experimental mining equipment on some moon, not safe jobs like being a teacher.
Saw this back in 2003, and I felt like it was made for me because funny enough: I was in high school, I had just gone through a breakup, was contemplating joining the military, and was learning about fascism in a literature class.

Great reaction guys. So happy you enjoyed it and found the same insights into it that many of us got, at the time of movie release, in cinemas. I'm sure your Patrons have filled you in already and you've done plenty of research into "Starship Troopers" origins and history? You mentioned the uniforms and yes it was very on the nose, but there was also parallels to humans looking like a swarm of invading insects, in their helmets and armor, especially exiting their ships, much like ants. I'd like to point out too, the actor who plays Rico, Casper Van Dien, was also in "Sleepy Hollow" as Brom Van Brunt, which ofc you know already, but the really funny thing is, Brom gets stabbed in the thigh by the horseman, much like Rico gets stabbed by the arachnid.

For me, the best part of this film has always been that it was such a clever satire, it almost crosses the line and doesn’t seem like a satire at all. I know so many people who had absolutely no idea that it was supposed to be as deeply funny as it was.

Neil Patrick Harris's uniform was so on the nose as an SS officer that the production staff while making the movie started calling him Doogie Himmler. 😅
He also played the coroner on the original *CSI,* the one set in Vegas. His prosthetic legs were never hidden, but they mostly were just taken as matter-of-fact. There was an episode or two, though, that really showed what the character (and the actor!) had to live with, day to day, as a double amputee.
the film actually used a number of people that had missing limbs, its how they were able to make some of the soldiers getting their arms and legs ripped off look so realistic.
Love the reaction. The movie? Here's the thing, Verhoeven admitted to not finishing reading the book. Moreover, the movie production started out as "Bug Hunt at Outpost 7"--completely unrelated to the book. After they got the treatment in the works, someone saw some similarities to the book "Starship Troopers." So they went to license the property, a very Hollywood move. I see this movie more as the "Outpost 7" project with "Starship Troopers" window dressing. So much context that Verhoeven ignored, probably because he really was not adapting the book. *ALSO* -- this movie borrows heavily in aesthetics (the weapons, the armor), even a few bits of dialogue from James Cameron's "Aliens," which is wholly ironic since James Cameron had the cast who played the Colonial Marines read "Starship Troopers."

Ironically, the novel isn't really a parody/satire, although it also doesn't have the direct allusions to the Reich. That was a deliberate Verhoeven choice. Heinlein had.....opinions. Not surprising, given the religion he founded.

Which was impressive considering the book it's based on... where the whole Citizen and colonialism aspect is totally serious (the author legit believed it). This movie is a seriously tear-jerker movie, full of family-themed lessons and, I can dare to say, this movie is a lot better than any family movies that you've ever seen or reacted before.

I absolutely loved the discussion after the reaction. You guys absolutely nailed it. This is why you guys are great. You see the parallels, you don’t get distracted by the ooohh and aaahhs of the cgi, you really pay attention to the story and what Paul Verhoven did with this story.
As a young teen I thought Carmen was gorgeous. Maturing as an adult is realizing Dizz is the better choice for Rico over Carmen because she pushes him to be better not just because she’s into him unlike “for the streets” Carmen.
I can't say her relationship with Sheen helped her in my own eyes IRL and is one of the reasons I don't want to know personal details of actors because - baggage.
Dizz is for Rico what Ursula is for Peter Parker

I have made similar comments on reactions to this movie :D Carmen was stunning to me back when I first saw this on release but over the years it has definitely been Dizz that has grown in her attractiveness to me.
Rico's character development was so good. The chemistry between him and his squad mates was always one of my favorite aspects of the movie.
Guy is surrounded by absolute bros. Zim as the hard-as-nails but fair instructor, Ace is the friend we all need - loyal and a complete goofball, Sugar who's got his back even as he's down on the floor gutted like a fish and even Raczak knows to give him and Dizzy some extra time because who knows if they're around tomorrow.
I wish for everybody to have those type of people around them.

He’s not really taking school propaganda seriously, and when asked if he believes the lessons he’s not sure and hasn’t made up his mind. He’s a highly competitive jock, but he’s sentimental and wants a committed relationship. He joins the military to chase after his love interest, not because he’s “falling in line,” and he realizes that too, telling his parents he’s been an idiot and wanting to come home. It’s the reversal of fortunes and circumstances, the rewards that seem to come from compliance, and the exposure to “men of character” who nevertheless do brutal things that radicalizes Rico into falling in line.
The whole point of it is him having opposite character development lol. In the beginning Rico has inclines of 'maybe this isn't the way we should be doing things'. By the end he's a full blown brainwashed soldier willing to fight to the death for the very system who very likely killed his parents, not the bugs. The movie's super in your face about the Nazi fascist tones with the "protagonists", down to NPH basically being dressed as a full blown SS officer by the end lol. The movie's a total satire on militarization. I love the movie forsure lol, but it's definitely misunderstood...
Many people didnt get this movie when it came out. Over the years its turned into a cult classic and people get it.
It's definitely that kind of film that can be misconstrued or misunderstood - but if you look closely, it's so clear what it's trying to say!! It absolutely deserves the cult classic label!

Almost everyone "got it" when it came out because they had seen Robocop. The ones who didn't were millennials who saw it as kids, which is fair enough, but this narrative you're putting forward years later is completely false.
iirc this movie even spawned a 3D animated tv series airing when I was kid. But it played the action adventure straight losing all the commentary the movie had
You guys are the BEST film/movie reviewers on YT imo. Always so positive/fun and fair. So many people of your age group on YT also reviewing films don't seem to be able to show normal emotions during watching certain scenes in films, which is what we watch for, to see if the scenes affect others in a similar way. No matter the scene they just keep trying to come out with funny/sarcastic/empty thoughts and even laughing at sad deaths. You always get this stuff right and it's always great to see you both be genuinely moved at times from the film scenes. Huge fan!

This reminds you to Helldivers because the ex CEO and founder of Helldivers studio wanted to make his dream Starship Troopers game and that is Helldivers 2.
Something important about that is that Sony has the rights to every kind of Starship Troopers media outside the publication of the book (this is based in a book) and Sony is also owner of Helldivers so both franchises can exists without legal problems because they come from the same owner.
Casper Van Dien the actor who plays Rico was very vocal about how much he liked Helldivers 2 when the game became one of the big hits of this year.
I'm honestly in disbelief that Ari, as a Helldivers 2 player, didn't seem to expect the extreme resemblance, because I felt like that was ALL I WAS HEARING about it when the game was blowing up big time haha. I guess having seen the movie I latched onto all the comparisons, and having not seen it he didn't really hang on to that connection.
Helldivers 2 is such a fun game. I get immersed in the universe.

The CG in this movie is absolutely incredible. The leap from Jurassic Park with a handful of shots to this - just 4 years later - where there are THOUSANDS of CG creatures is stunning.
And like JP it's the time and care and attention to detail that makes it look so damn good.

true! ..im pretty sure each of those bugs was hand animated too, that it wasnt until LoTR that crowds could be mass produced by way of procedural CGI that looked as good as this..
Fun fact: JP actually helped get the vfx in the movie to look the way they do. JP had been the transition point at ILM from puppets to digital. but the animators were used to do digital effects, only stop motion and animatronics. to get around that they created the D.I.D. or Dinosaur input Device. it was literally a puppet they could animated like stop motion, but it was rigged with sensors connected to the computer, allowing them to animate the 3d dinosaurs like you would stop motion.
For this movie, they took the D.I.D (renamed digital input device) and modified to not just look like the bugs, but since technology had progress, they could actually animate it in real time like a hand puppet. (instead of just move a little, click a button to save it, move a little more, click, etc) so they could do complex animation then just save the entire this.
the bugs looked good, but i'm still amazed by the design, look and feel of all space scenes

I actually got to ask Xander's actor a couple of questions in an early, *early* online chat forum. He mentioned that the robotic Xander was extremely disturbing because the puppeteers kept making it look at him while he'd walk around the set. And that his favorite scene in the movie is the base attack scene on P because it was Paul Verhoven's tribute to the film Zulu.
That prick stole Kelly Kapowski and I never forgave him for it..

yeah thing is... the bugs really ARE the agressors in the conflict, not seeing humans as sentient beings by their metrics. So the bugs throwing the rock at humanity, and attacks on the bugs being for the safety of humanity are in fact NOT propaganda.
All this time (saw this in the theater) I NEVER caught the Shijumi foreshadowing "my father said it would cost an arm and a leg" - and then he gets immediately dismembered. Wow.

I'm so glad you guys understood what the movie was going for ! That made the discussion afterwards very enjoyable ! Personally something I find fascinating is, theres no evidence that the bugs actually sent the asteroid that destroyed Buenos Aires. When they show where Earth is compared to the bug planets, they're very distant from each other and earlier they do bring up that the planet has defenses for stuff like that.
Yeah it's pretty much 100% certain that it was actually the Federation that sent the asteroid. Klendathu is on the other side of the Galaxy. It would have taken millions of years for an asteroid to reach Earth. Not to mention how tf you'd even calculate the trajectory.
and you can argue the ship making contact could have altered the trajectory of the asteroid in a minute way that at those distances could mean the difference between hitting earth or not

that issue with this is were applying know logic outside the of movie to logic inside the movie. The bugs have attacked humans and are violent towards humans. Yeah we only see one side of it but we dont see anything else that comes close to hinting that the federation is faking attacks inside the movie it is all trying to apply outside logic and thinking.
In the book it was made very clear it was a bug attack. Remember that Verhoeven said he didn't read the book, so the movie is wildly inaccurate.

Yeah so true. The discussions in detail at the end of movie reaction videos is probably the best part of watching movie reaction post and Media Knights is one of the best.
I always snort at the asteroid scene when the captain compliments Zander and Carmen for preventing a full head-on crash by their quick reaction and due to their skill. Carmen looked so smug and pleased with herself - when it was her who brought them into the path of the asteroid in the first place by changing their course of her own volition, after only being on the ship for three weeks and without even telling anyone about it.
True, however how could she have predicted that streamlining the route and being efficient would lead them to a completely unforseeable event, that asteroid could have just as easily been in their original path before the changes.
Yeah really. Thats like taking a huge shit on someones face, but then bragging about how you're such a gentleman because you helped wipe their face clean.
It's a deeper scene to show how smart the bugs are. Carmen reprograms the ship to the optimal course, the optimal course the bugs already had the asteroid on.
Insubordination resulting in a damage to federal property, requiring a complete refit of a sensor array on a federal starship. That´s 10 lashes, plus another 10 a day after!

I actually saw this as a teenager when it first came to theaters. It was just a fun space movie to me then. I saw it again after college and this was post 9/11 and all the media and government was pushing the WAR on Terror and the war in Iraq. I definitely got the subtext and how deep this film actually is.
Exactly. This version of earth doesn’t just feature a one world government where one body controls the entire planet, it’s also a fascist military state. Not being able to vote unless you devote your life to the military? Horrifying and reprehensible. A further bit of commentary that goes over people’s heads is Buenos Aires, Argentina being populated by what we would call a bunch of rich white Americans. This is a hint at how this world government expanded and took over the planet in the first place, and the consequences thereof for the local populations in countries that were not traditionally white.
I saw it on a gigantic screen with thunderous sound. It's style has been imitated so much it's part of the Hollywood bloodstream now (that and ROBOCOP) so it's impossible for young'uns to comprehend how frakking HARD the gore and violence hit back in the day : it was gruesome as only foreign (TETSUO II : BODY HAMMER comes to mind,) or low-budget horror movies (10 000 MANIACS) were.
It stayed with me for days.

Today's Hollywood? Johnny would be a trans-woman of color and all the "bugs" would be straight, white, males.
It would suck. Everything that makes STARSHIP TROOPERS work has *_nothing_* to do with the bugs : Verhoeven could have made the same exact movie with zombies, or robots, or demons, or demonic SS officers who are zombie robots.
Considering how Hollywood has lost any and all ability to tell coherent stories, I would have zero hope of anything remotely this intense getting made : we would end up with a fancy tech demo full of GenZ actors spouting pithy lines, smugly lecturing the audience on social issues, cribbing from other movies and generally walking around the set with bored faces.

@@vincelang3779 - Can't argue much with that. Hollywood has definitely lost its way. The writing is mostly garbage and they continue to rehash/remake older, more successful movies because they have no vision or creativity. And the constant virtue signaling crap makes me want to puke.
My thinking was, despite this movie still looking fantastic (one of my favorites), we've come a long way since then, cinema/technology wise, and I'd love to see what a proper director and writer could do with this nowadays. If it was done right, with the right people, I still think it would be magnificent. If it was done with the people we currently have in Hollywood as some sort of lame rehash, yeah, I agree, it would suck pretty bad.
So awesome seeing people enjoying Paul Verhoeven. The book is not satire, but the movie makes changes that really work well for cinema! Interesting enough, the book was written in a few weeks in response to the possibility of stopping nuclear tests for the US. He doesn't glorify war though, but spends a lot of time in the book discussing morals and philosophy in regards to responsibility and citizenship etc. It also makes it clear that blindly serving is also not the answer, and gives examples of veterans standing up for good fights in society and how they handled it correctly.
The book was quite interesting. Not very much action, but it certainly gave a lot to think about.

When I heard about this movie, I wondered how they could have made an entertaining movie from it. This movie is entertaining but it's nothing like the book. The movie is really not that deep, but the book is in a very different way. Both are good but nothing alike in the questions that they put forth and how they fight their battles.

One really interesting thing most people don't get is the movie version is completely opposite of the tone and philosophy of the book it's based on, yet still works. The 90's CGI cartoon "The Roughneck Chronicles" is halfway between the book and the movie and is another extremely well done take on the story that's way better than a forgotten kids show has any right to be.

Fun Fact: the design of the main Arachnids was actually an alternate design for the Shriekers in _Tremors 2: Aftershocks_ that they didn't use due to being limited by their budget. But Tippet Studio (which worked on both films) decided to use the design for this film.

The VFX team did such a great job with the bugs. They still hold up so well. And the combination of practical and cgi just again shows why it’s king.

I remember watching this movie basically by accident. My father turned on the TV and it was just starting. I rolled my eyes but stayed. We couldn't believe how good it was❤ after that my father always called me to watch it together when it came on tv🎉
Starship Troopers was an iconic film that spawned a host of sequels (the 2nd one is pretty good), and inspired dozens of games and other films. Helldivers is one of those it inspired.
Rico being declared K.I.A. was just an accidental clerical mistake in the paperwork. He was rescued by the Roughnecks offscreen and only suffered the leg injury.
CGI movies were awesome too

Casper Van Died - Rico has been invited on numerous interviews just for his expressions and opinions of the game that's basically a tribute to the movie, and he loves it :D
The foreshadowing in this movie is 🔥. Example: It's a cute moment when the little kid says "I'm doing my part too!" However, the final battle, when they're being supported by ACTUAL KIDS...😱
I sat down at my desk to resume starship troopers Terran command 20 secs after remarking to myself that the media knights are probably my favorite reactors. Here's a fun fan theory: The Asteroid that hit Earth was going to miss, but was deflected by being hit by the ship Carmen was piloting, a ship that wouldn't have been in the path of said asteroid if she hadn't modified the nav. Ergo, Carmen is the reason the bugs were attacked.
I love the way yall break this movie down. I knew you’d understand the deeper meaning and love the movie. When this came out, people didn’t really understand the meaning, but now people know looking back at it. It’s also based on the book with the same name by Robert A. Heinlein from 1959! It’s a REALLY good book.
Helldivers absolutely took inspiration from this movie.
It became clear as day to me the more the film went on. A pleasant surprise since I’ve been enjoying that game!

This movie didn't had big budget, yet they pulled so many known Celebrities into it, CG was really impressive for it's time (better than what we're getting now), and the visual/practical effects are fantastic!
Sometimes if we step back and think of how a movie is interpreted by our minds and that is a direct result of those in charge, we can see where the money stops and the mind is responsible for our entertainment value. Verhoven understands value.

I'm so happy you watched this movie. This movie, for me, was used as a bit of a foundation for other Human/Alien war movies and the overuse of the propaganda to show how humans are fighting for their lives against spieces that were being exterminated by them.
Also, I completely agree with Ari about Dizz. She was the one for Rico (even knowing that she was going to die), she was the other half of him, pushing him to be better, fight for something that he believes in and even when he wins the day, she stood by him.
After seeing this, I would highly recommend you watch Battle: LA. This was another great Human/Alien war movie that takes place in modern times and you get to see how the human characters learn and adapt.
Oh I second this. Battle LA would be a wonderful followup for this.

This movie was everything as a kid, I remember seeing the trailer and it blowing my mind! I was way too young to see it of course but it was the 90's! we all watched stuff way too old for us HAHA!. Aliens, Robocop and the rest. It molded us and opened our minds to sci-fi greatness.

Just about to get into this reaction and just wanted to make a few comments. I remember seeing this in the theater when it was first released and was surprised by the negative reaction it received but realized that people just didn't understand what it was really about and trying to achieve. The biggest surprise I had though was reading the book afterwards and seeing just how different the two were. I am honestly surprised they were even allowed to keep the title of Starship Troopers with how different they are. If you guys are into reading, I would suggest giving it a read.
Would love to read the novel at some point. Such a shame this movie was and still is so misunderstood. All it takes is digging a little deeper.

You should check out the 3d animated series "Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers chronicles". its alot closer to the book then the movie is, and even features the other alien species from the book the film leaves out.

Most baffling fact about this movie : the visuals are just mindblowing perfect, and is still better then most of the stuff nowadays, and it's nearly 30 years old !

@@OfficialMediaKnights they spent $100 million making this movie, roughly $40 million more than Jurassic Park and making it one of the most expensive films ever made at that point. The studio gave the special effect houses enough time to do everything to the absolute best of their capabilities. Just like Universal and Jurassic Park.
I have watched this dozens and dozens of times, after seeing it in the theater. I'm so glad to watch this with you guys. I have it memorized.
RoboCop, total recall, and this film are the ultimate trilogy by Paul Verhoven. I absolutely love all three and was lucky enough to see all three theatrically.
I know you got the commentary but the back story is explained more in the video games etc.
If you didn't catch the hint the starship troopers started the war. The space federation forcefully colonized the bug planets for land, resorts, new planets for the humans to live. They destroyed the bug homes and killed lots of them. The bugs were actually chill at first then got angry and retaliated.
The propaganda and lies of the space federation just painted the bugs as savages who just attacked for no reason and just killing innocent people. The federation made anger and hatred towards the bugs ie the propaganda for everyone including kids killing the bugs when all they had to do was leave them alone.
Of course the federation soldiers are dressed in Nazi like uniforms and are fascist for symbolism.

*Thanks for that confirmation: I always thought that story about the mormon colonizers was more antagonistic towards the bugs than the Federal Propaganda clip led on; but having never played the games (Or watched the sequels), I never had proof of it... Gotta love how Paul Verhoeven respects his audience enough to get the messages without handholding them (Even if many indeed did not get the whole message of this movie when it came out)*

The film's message is abundantly clear once you pay attention, it's actually not even that subtle - it just gets all dressed up in the fancy stunts and colorful visuals, so at first you're so taken by that, it slips by you!

The later is still focused on the bugs but they give subtle hints about and deep dives into the federation. Including how they treat their own people and others.
Yeah..the Dark Horse comics actually tell a great story about the Mormon outpost and another one about Rasczak past and his encounters w/ the bugs for the first time.

Haha, it's good that you mentioned Helldivers (1-2) because they are based on Starship Troopers! There's a video of Casper Van Dien (Johnny Rico) reacting to Helldivers 2 and it's wholesome because he's a NERD when it comes to Starship Troopers, passionately so. He's one of those actors who fell in love with the franchise they starred in. Go watch the video, he will tell you all the cool things about STT. He even explains the differences between a civillian and a citizen 😂 He also got some behind the scenes fun facts and heartwarming stories surrounding the fans.
This isn't the first film adaptation of STT, btw. There was an miniseries anime adaptation back in 1988 that are more true to the source book. The Verhoeven version spawned a couple of sequels that aren't so good but it also gave us a handful of 3D animated movies that are good! (also the game, Helldivers).
Not just that, there was a 3D animated series back in 1999 called 'Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles' which somewhat a hybrid between the book and the movie. And the TV series had better ending for Johnny and Dizz 👍
Roughnecks is such a good show, it's too bad it was more or less forgotten.
Fun fact: during test screening, a lot of people left notes on Denise Richard’s character because they didn’t like how flirty she was with the other guy. The movie was heavily edited around Rico and Carmen due to the audiences dislike of her.
Someone even left a note on their card after leaving the screening that just said “Die bitch”

Some people really did not understand her and Rico's character arc. The entire point is that the two are not meant to be together. They both find people who fit so much better to them.

Starship Troopers is a SciFi masterpiece. I have watched it countless times and never got bored of it.
The discussion Y’all had was 100% on the money. Paul Verhoeven has confirmed it multiple times in interviews, fan discussions and at comic conventions.

One thing that often goes unnoticed is that there's no real difference between Citizens and Civilians other than the right to vote. Rico's parents are Civilians, but they have a nice house and seem to be doing very well financially. They're not 2nd class/under class like you might think. It's an interesting, and probably unrealistic, bit of world-building. Great reaction, thanks!!!
I always thought of the Rico family as board member level affluence. Making weapons or such in support yet independent of the government. Carmen's family seems to be struggling.
Civilian vs Citizen thing is based on Rome Republic
It's a holdover from the world of the book. The civilization in the books has no real discrimination. Civilians have all the rights of a citizen except for the right to vote and every civilian has a right to seek military service to earn that right to vote. The military does not turn people away based on race, religion, class, region of origin or even physical ability, the military will find something for them to do, and not every job in the military means combat.

@@Iymarra teacher, specifically for the required class "history and moral philosophy" was not a profession that you took to become a citizen, rather, it was a position that only citizens, not civilians were allowed to occupy. You're correct though in that there were other ways to gain citizenship, but they had to be dangerous and hard jobs, like testing out experimental mining equipment on some moon, not safe jobs like being a teacher.
Saw this back in 2003, and I felt like it was made for me because funny enough: I was in high school, I had just gone through a breakup, was contemplating joining the military, and was learning about fascism in a literature class.

You mentioned the uniforms and yes it was very on the nose, but there was also parallels to humans looking like a swarm of invading insects, in their helmets and armor, especially exiting their ships, much like ants.
I'd like to point out too, the actor who plays Rico, Casper Van Dien, was also in "Sleepy Hollow" as Brom Van Brunt, which ofc you know already, but the really funny thing is, Brom gets stabbed in the thigh by the horseman, much like Rico gets stabbed by the arachnid.

in this the MI is basically like the Imperial Guard, just regular men and women with flak armor and a basic rifle.
For me, the best part of this film has always been that it was such a clever satire, it almost crosses the line and doesn’t seem like a satire at all. I know so many people who had absolutely no idea that it was supposed to be as deeply funny as it was.
Satire only really works if it has elements of what it's satirizing. The Federation has none of it, but does have a surface level paint job.
They completely failed to show the bad side of the Federation, the invasion was a shit show, but incompetence is not exclusive to Totalitarianism.

The double amputee recruiter is an actual double amputee. Oh if you ever watch Golden Girls Blanche was the science teacher
He also played the coroner on the original *CSI,* the one set in Vegas. His prosthetic legs were never hidden, but they mostly were just taken as matter-of-fact. There was an episode or two, though, that really showed what the character (and the actor!) had to live with, day to day, as a double amputee.
the film actually used a number of people that had missing limbs, its how they were able to make some of the soldiers getting their arms and legs ripped off look so realistic.

The movie is great, but that soundtrack is pure audio bliss. I still blast that at high volume 14 years later.

Here's the thing, Verhoeven admitted to not finishing reading the book. Moreover, the movie production started out as "Bug Hunt at Outpost 7"--completely unrelated to the book. After they got the treatment in the works, someone saw some similarities to the book "Starship Troopers." So they went to license the property, a very Hollywood move.
I see this movie more as the "Outpost 7" project with "Starship Troopers" window dressing. So much context that Verhoeven ignored, probably because he really was not adapting the book.
*ALSO* -- this movie borrows heavily in aesthetics (the weapons, the armor), even a few bits of dialogue from James Cameron's "Aliens," which is wholly ironic since James Cameron had the cast who played the Colonial Marines read "Starship Troopers."
