Watching this movie in theaters in 1996, that was a great laugh-line for the audience. @@mr.smithgnrsmith7808 to each their own opinion. but the doctor did say that there was nothing they could do to stop the bleeding. Given how fast she was starting to deteriorate before Steve got to EL Toro ... I could find it believable.
Agreed, but some stories could never be told without CGI. IMO most of the MCU does it really good and all others should take from them. It's only believable if the CGI is and they mostly nail it.
@@JarofMayonaise CGI will always look fake and intangible and is disgusting to look at. It is unacceptable that in today's movies even the sky, the trees, the sea are made with CGI and it looks terribly fake. It is the height of laziness that the production of a film does not move to a natural landscape to film it. They sacrifice quality for quantity, to reduce costs, but they also reduce the quality of the film and of course, they reduce the number of people who will see the film. And unfortunately, experience has shown that, for some reason I still don't understand, there has been higher CGI, lower quality script, and lower quality acting.MCU is the height of CGI excess, it is too oversaturated with GCI. Always, less is more. Why do they have to make the fire with CGI? Isn't it obvious that CGI fire looks awfully fake?
Aside from Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow, Stargate is my other favorite of his movies. Despite being 30 years old, its special effects are shockingly good. They still hold up today. Not a disaster movie. Just a really good sci-fi flick.
Fun Fact: so they used miniature sets of the city blocks for the destruction scenes and set them on fire. But since fire flows up and not really out they had to set the models on their side with the camera pointed down, then set them ablaze. That's how they were able to get the desired effect of an expanding explosion. Practical effects for the win.
They blew up the Death Star sideways with the camera underneath for (more or less), the same reasons. Edit: Thunderbirds rockets and planes always filmed with vehicles "flying down" to get straight jet blast.
The thing about the Nineties is that even Popcorn films were made with a sense of passion. A friend of mine saw this at the cinema and when that scene with the British Airmen came on the three rows in front of him cheered. Turns out it was a staff outing from the local RAF base!
I always thought Jeff Goldblum could not possibly look any sexier than he did with his open shirt lounge in Jurassic Park. Then I saw him strutting through the desert with a cigar in a flight suit. Damn man.
He became the most unlikely and wonderful of sex symbols in the 90s and I am still here for it to this day. I have a pin of him lounging from Jurassic Park on my hat.
I’m still amazed there are people who haven’t watched this classic yet! Was 10 when I watched this in the theaters. Growing up in India in the 90s, Hollywood, America, Americans were all so cool. Truly, 90s/early 2000s was peak USA. We all dreamed of living the cool life one day, have all the cool gadgets and toys and video games, eat fast food and sundaes, drive cool cars. Man, so much promise and hope we had. This film really made all of us feel proud! Great reaction guys.
What is even cooler was seeing this on the 4th of July the year it first came out. Standing in line with my cousin I hadn't seen since we were young, doing fireworks afterwards and I hadn't even seen a trailer beforehand. One of my best movie experiences ever.
I think my favorite part about this movie is that you get all of these individual characters, like puzzle pieces, and then as the story unravels, the puzzle pieces start to fall into place with the connections of the characters. It's just super satisfying writing.
The most incredible thing is how they avoided leaning on preexisting relationships with the single exception of Jeff Goldblum's ex working in the White House to catalyze the story, and all of the characters remain firmly within their established wheelhouse all the way to the end. We don't have Will Smith shoehorned into being the one who shoots the alien in Area 51, because it wouldn't make sense for him to be there and armed. The restraint to leverage background characters for such story beats is something that you just can't find in action films today.
This is easily my favourite Emmerich movie next to Stargate. Pacing's good, it's got some genuine camp while not losing the intensity of what's going on. Grew up with those and the X-Files, haven't looked down since.
"Mom's sleeping" is what I had to tell my brother two months ago and since that this scene hits even harder. Especialy because watching movies like Independence Day was always our family's thing. RIP mom.
I know this isn't the most recent video from you two. But i just wanted to say thank you for everything. Your content has kept me above water on multiple occasions. Keep up being awesome!.
Props to Jasmine for saving herself, her child, and Boomer. I think about situations like this and I imagine fear would make people leave anyone who couldn't keep up behind.
Saw the Super Bowl commercial in early 96, jaw = dropped. Waiting 6 months was torturous, but my brother and I saw a midnight screening and I hadn't seen a line of people like that since the first Star Wars movie in 1977! Seems like we don't have experiences like that much any longer.
I know the guy who owns the truck from the speech. Apparently there are guys who own military gear and get paid to bring it out for movies as a regular paycheck
Imagine the effect this had on a 12 year old me and millions of other youngsters when this came out. The graphics, the action, Will Smith who was the hottest in Hollywood. At the time easily the best movie ever made from my young perspective ^-^
Denise, your scowly ick face when you saw the aliens in the tubes was great! Also, that scientist was played by Brent Spiner, famous for playing Data in Star Trek: The Next Generation. I love Roland's movies, they're so popcorny, a great time to have a drink or a smoke and hang with friends.
The hospital scene with the presidents wife maybe doesn’t quite get the emotion right, but with him and his daughter, that hits, especially watching this as a parent of young kids.
I think it is _perfection_ - in that situation, it's always awkward. Neither person wants it to be sad. Neither person wants to really dive into the emotions, so you get this awkward faux-lightness captured perfectly here.
Fun fact. US army was very happy to participate in the production of the movie including equipment and using off military bases ... ... right up to the moment Rolland Emmerich insisted on putting " area 51" in the movie. After that they been forced to use models and visual effects.
THE ARRIVAL, from the same year and starring Charlie Sheen is much better alien invasion movie but it was overshadowed by the explosive special effects of INDEPENDENCE DAY. @OfficialMediaKnights
I'm sure you're speaking of the movie starring Amy Adams. It's very interesting. There's another movie with the title The Arrival that came out in 1996 and stars Charlie Sheen. I think they should react to both :)
Since 1996 this is my birthday movie. Born on the 4th of July. Main character named Steve. What more could a young boy ask for? To this day I watch it every 4th of July with a slice of Pepperoni pizza. I love this movie. To me, this is a prime example of what going to the movies is all about. Action, adventure, romance, suspense, great effects, and you leave the theater with a good feeling.
@@OfficialMediaKnights Yes indeed! Love you guys. Thank you to both of you for the many hours of entertainment. You've helped get me through some dark times over these last couple years.
My buddy was in this movie. He was the 3rd pilot with Connick Jr and Smith shoot missiles into the shield. My buddy is the one that can't pull up in time and crashes into the Giant Ships shield as the alien ships fly out. He dies again in a cockpit scene during the area 51 attack from a different angle. He was in the book for the movie as well standing behind Randy Quaid in a barn. His name is Ryan Williams. He is Knight 3
54:05 cue me starting to cry right here. Never fails. Even at the end where Miguel calls ‘Dad’ instead of ‘Russell’ which he did at the beginning of the movie. This is a must watch for everyone in my family for July 4th. When most of the people are at the house, it is put on and everyone comes to watch. Side note, a family friend was offered a security job at Area 51. He even went there to interview. He turned it down because there was no way his wife and kids would let him keep secrets. They would pester him endlessly.
Thanks so much for joining us on this! It's so cool that you and your family have this as a small tradition, that sounds like a great July 4th! Also lollll at the family friend, we feel that, there is no way we could keep a secret like that from each other 😂😂😂
Théoden's speech at the Battle of Pelenor Fields holds the number one spot for pre-battle speeches. Bill Pullman delivers number two with his Independence speech here.
Pullman's speech here, along with Aragorn's speech before the Gates of Mordor in *LotR: Return of the King,* are among the best "boost the troops" cinematic speeches made. (That I've seen, at least.) I watch *Independence Day* every Fourth of July, and that speech ~still~ gets me all patriotic and verklempt.
I was about 14 when this came out, and I was lucky enough to see it with all my friends on opening day in a sold-out, packed theater. For me, every single time I watch this, I will always be transported back to that day, that raucous theater crowd, staring in silence as the White House and so many major cities are completely obliterated, it felt so visceral and real. It is, to this day, up there with movies like Endgame and Infinity War and No Way Home as one of my favorite movie-going experiences ever. I'm so, so happy y'all enjoyed it, thank you for the wonderful reaction. All the love ❤
Absolutely love watching you both react, especially to films I grew up on as a kid or young adult. This film came out around July 4th, Will Smith was becoming an ICON and Bill Pullman has top 5 patriotic speeches in film history. I remember seeing this film and then attending a massive fireworks celebration where it started with the National Anthem and a flyover of F16’s. In a way it felt like the movie was happening, patriotism was pretty high that year.
Still one of my most favorite movie going experiences of my life was seeing ID4 opening weekend. The buildup to when the aliens first attack the cities and seeing the destruction was something we had not seen, ever! Literately wide-eyed and in awe of what I was seeing on screen.
Just to clarify a tiny little bit. The quandary arising at 16:55 is simple to understand although depressing at the same time. Coming from someone who was in their 30s at the time, look at the year this came out and think of the political and sociological attitudes that existed even in the shadows. Then think of someone trying to obtain a high ranking position at a place as prestigious as NASA. It isn't very pretty to think about but it was how things were even though it wasn't openly admitted. Even though we still have miles to go, just smile and think of how far we've come since then. On a much more happy note, I'm glad you guys found this movie. Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum's chemistry in this was pure comedy gold.
In 1988 I went to Rhinebeck, NY to see a WWI plane show. We ended up paying a whole $25 for a 20 min WWI Biplane ride. The pilot looked like a highschooler. It took him 3 tries to land because the wind kept blowing the plane sideways. I think I lost 5 years of my life that day. But it was an awesome ride.
I did the same thing when I was 12 (Thanks Dad). storm forced my plane to land at another air field. I got my money's worth. The thing I remember most is that when I stuck my hand out of the cockpit to wave the wind pushed it back so hard. I wish everyone could take a Biplane ride.
Somewhere around the early 2000's I was working at a newspaper when the publisher asked the newsroom "Anyone want to go for a Biplane ride?" My friend across the desk and I shot our hands up. Turns out Red Baron pizza had two biplanes doing a promotional tour. My pilot asked me what I wanted to do, and my response was "I want you to scare the hell out of me." So we did loops, barrel rolls, and hammerheads. 😎
I just wanna say that out of all the reaction channels I follow (and there are a few) you guys are my favourites. I love how even if the film is not 5 star, you see the positive in everything and you appreciate what films were trying to achieve etc. Keep it up!
I graduated HS in 1996. We saw this movie SEVERAL times in the theater. It was amazing. That was a great year for movies. Titanic, Twister, The Rock, Fargo, Courage Under Fire, Jerry Maguire, Happy Gilmore, Scream, etc.
I saw this in the theater with my older brother and sister and we loved it! We had the time of our lives! It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects and it made $817 million dollars ($1.5 billion dollars today) against a $75 million dollar budget. A sequel was released 20 years later, INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE, but it was not well received by critics or fans of the original.
Duude that must have been a blast to see in theatres!! It's a shame the sequel wasn't received that well, especially by fans - that's never a good sign!
I watched this movie as a kid and let me tell you. That alien scene freaked me out, especially the practical effects made it look so real! That scene and the interactive scenes between Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum were my favorite. Both actors started to become my favorite following Wild Wild West with Will Smith and Jurassic Park with Jeff Goldblum.
The practicals in that sequence were fantastic! Such a cool moment in the film. Also, completely agree! When those two finally get together the film got even better. Great back and forth!
Cannot wait! Been catching up with these sci-fi flicks and man! What a journey. Been loving pretty much all of them so far. Just watched another one yesterday that on a surface level is enjoyable but when you go deeper into what it’s saying it re contextualizes the entire film. These guys were killing it with the genre back then!
Fun fact the man in the office building as the city is exploding is Volker Engel the man that did all of the effects for the movie. He won best visual effects for the movie and he deserved it, all the effects still hold up so well especially when the cities are exploding
There's a deleted scene I wish they'd could've included that explains our computers are reverse engineered from the alien ship, and that's why David was able to hack them.
That actually explains the major plothole in the movie. Because if our computers and software are completely... well... alien to one another then a computer virus would do nothing. A virus is after all just a software, albeit malicious, that needs an operating system and hardware that can run it. But if our computers are already reverse engineered from the alien tech, writing a virus that is actually compatible with the alien systems would be much easier.
LOL.. Ethan Hawke was supposed to play Will's part but Ethan declined thinking it was not that good and actually thought some lines were corny like the famous line "welcome to earth!" and was actually laughing at THAT line like "what is that", lol, but when Hawke went to see the movie, instant regret, and when Will said THAT line, it FLOORED the entire audience and Hawke sank down to his seat..lol
What's great about this film is that it's a great homage and tribute to the 50s UFO and alien craze. The alien crafts are essentially just basic UFO designs (but bigger). But it's also a tribute to War of The World. In both the original movie and the original novel, it was bacteria (a virus) that defeated the Martians. Emmerich updated it literally with a computer virus that defeated the alien's defenses! Now all we need is a narration from Morgan Freeman like in War of rhe World remake saying "... and their downfall is that they didn't update their anti-virus software!"
That's such a great catch actually, love that little update!! We definitely need a Morgan Freeman Nord VPN narration at the end of this, let's make it happen y'all 😂😂😂
One reason I love this movie: It doesn't drag on unnecessarily, it has the right mix of humor, seriousness, drama, cheesiness, great one-liners, action and quiet moments. None of the characters are useless and everyone has their moments. There is character development (for example Russel Case). All in all, it is one of my favorite sci-fi action movies.
The 90s was the last decade of the real summer blockbuster - incredible disasters, huge set pieces, use of miniatures at their best, practical effects, unbelievable storylines. Such a shame we dont get movies like this anymore.
uhh what? the superhero movies took over the 2ks to become THE summer blockbusters of the current era. There will always be summer blockbusters just to varying degree.
@@BatFan1 Does May count as summer? Otherwise a vast majority of mcu movies didn't release during summer. But then again, it's summer in the southern hemisphere in December so...
I'll never forget the hype around this movie at the time. When the trailer dropped and we saw the White House get zapped, last day of high school, my english teracher asked what we were all going to do for the summer, and everyone said watch ID4!
I was 15 when I saw this with dad opening night and I still remember standing outside of the movie theater afterwards talking about how awesome it was. Your reaction to this movie brought that all back to me, thank you.
This and Jurrasic Park were such game changers for their genres in terms of early CGi and practical effects that they changed how people made films going forward. The 90s had so many bangers that just hold up perfectly to most of todays films. Great reaction as always ❤
This is the ultimate popcorn movie: action-packed, fun, quotable, and full of likable characters. It's not meant to be all that deep or taken too seriously, but it's still sincere and relatable. I miss movies like this. They made going to the movies fun.
On July 4th, 1996, my husband and I waited in line, in the Arizona heat, to see this movie, but it was totally worth it. A fun, epic summer blockbuster. 😄
I remember being a teenager watching this in the theaters opening night. The hype around this was insane. Watching this with a giant crowd was an experience I'll always remember.
This was one of my mom's favorite movies. We went to see it at the theater opening weekend and it was such a wonderful experience. Everyone was laughing and clapping and groaning and cheering together and it was so much fun. A great movie that still holds up!
I remember watching this in 96 at the cinema & in awe of the FX nowadays i appreciate the performances of the cast & there characters especially Jeff Goldblum who scene steals every scene he's in. Another awesome reaction from my favourite reaction couple, your enjoyment watching movies is so refreshing & it's obvious you love movies. You pair are smashing it out the park this week Dark Knight Rises, Alien Romulus, Scream & now Independence Day 👍 👍 👍
I would like to recommend Battle Los Angeles (2011) as another alien invasion movie. It's another good movie that mixes CGI and Practicals to look pretty good compared to other movies.
The best part is, the explosions caused by the giant main weapons are practical. They built models at a 90 degree angle and actually filmed pyrotechnics racing up towards the camera, then superimposed actors onto the footage. Pretty damn good for the mid nineties, still holds up now. This movie has a special place in my heart, cuz I saw it ON July 4th. We watched fireworks right after the movie got out.
"They are wiping everyone else out so they can take the planet." - "That's so unnecessarily aggressive !" ...says the American. This is the perfect Sunday afternoon movie. No matter how many times you have seen it, if you switch channels and its on you end up watching the whole thing. The silliest part is that David's MacBook immediately synced with an Alien spaceship. I've spent entire days trying to sync my MacBook with a Windows PC ! For 80s goodness I'd recommend V the miniseries which massively influenced this. Also do District 9 with is like anti-Independence Day.
The ship details seemed very much like Stargate. Also love that this movie brings together so many from other Sci-fi shows and movies past and future. President Lonestar, Dr Data, First Lady President of the Colonies, Major Jayne Cobb. So many more too. Just a great cast overall especially the smaller parts.
This was such a huge, huge hit when it came out. I remember going to see it in the Theater and it was such an amazing experience because of how loud and bombastic it was.
That summer was huge with the release of this the Rock, Twister, Scream and the first Mission Impossible. I was working at a theater that just had it's Grand Opening at our new mall. When this movie came out it was an event with a lot of hype. But the fans were split with some loving it and some feeling blah about it. I enjoyed it and watched it a couple of times while we had it there. I still have some of promotion items from it.
I watched this in theatres back in the day....the buildings blowing up....was some of the craziest shit I've ever seen. It was absolute madness in the theatre. Pure cinema perfection. The action is fantastic, but the people in it are what sells it. You CARE about them, and that speech....what a chad.
The sequel "Resurgence" in 2016 is intriguing: I actually didn't like it when it first came out, but it's grown on me in the years since. It's right up there with Pacific Rim as to how it pokes holes in the genre of "alien invasion disaster" movies, but is genuinely made by fans of the genre and the science that leads to the fiction. And the final sequences of Resurgence gave me so many "Aliens" vibes: you'll know it when you see it!
From what I remember, it was the 1st time special effects like this were done in broad daylight scenes.. (technically challenging at this time) a great fun film!

Have you seen The Fly?
Omg,yes Jeff Goldblum is sexy still!!!!
man's a national treasure
He became the most unlikely and wonderful of sex symbols in the 90s and I am still here for it to this day. I have a pin of him lounging from Jurassic Park on my hat.
Love Russell's revenge. He probed them back with "up yours!"
Karma, she doth be a spiteful bitch.
She's an actress of course they have. Reactors tend to do that for their videos. It'sl to attrack viewers. Their commentary is cool anyway
I'm 49 and I still haven't seen Titanic... at some point it almost becomes a point not to 😂
Yeah, it was a golden age for Hollywood. And today it's all degradation.
Major Mitchell, the officer that shot the can off of the spaceship, is Adam Baldwin, from "Firefly".
And he is also "Animal Mother" in "Full Metal Jacket"
…and he was the Loyalist Dragoon Captain that set the church on fire in The Patriot…
And he was the 1st mate on The Last Ship
4:00 "How would the world react?" Have you guys seen the movie Contact? One of my favorite films that deals with that very question among others.
@@M4TCH3SM4L0N3 100% great point
This is easily my favourite Emmerich movie next to Stargate. Pacing's good, it's got some genuine camp while not losing the intensity of what's going on. Grew up with those and the X-Files, haven't looked down since.
"Mom's sleeping" is what I had to tell my brother two months ago and since that this scene hits even harder. Especialy because watching movies like Independence Day was always our family's thing. RIP mom.

I haven't seen this movie in years, but the scene that stuck with me was Jasmine saving her son and dog from the wave of fire
That was such a tense scene, can't imagine the terror she must have felt and she still kept it moving!! What a badass!

All of Roland Emmerich's movies just go from zero to a gazillion off the bat.
Haha as soon as he steps on the gas he doesn’t let go!
The Patriotvis probably his slowest movie and that movie is insane and awesome
@@icedreamer9629 yeah I actually have no issues with that scene, but I can’t say their opinion is wrong, as it’s theirs.
Fun fact.
US army was very happy to participate in the production of the movie including equipment and using off military bases ...

I love this movie. To me, this is a prime example of what going to the movies is all about. Action, adventure, romance, suspense, great effects, and you leave the theater with a good feeling.
Oh wow! That sounds like a plan! Some pepperoni pizza and a good flick, hell yeah! ❤️

I saw this in the theater on release day. It was and still is the LOUDEST movie I’ve ever seen in a theater. They had it cranked to 11!
“Today, we celebrate our Independence Day!” Wooooo! Still hits hard!
Good grief...you aren't serious, are you?
I don't understand why they were so confused by that statement. The movie made it pretty clear.
They cover it more in the sequel to explain why our modern technology is the way that it is now.
the "PEACE!" delivery right b4 shooting a nuke up aliens tailpipe is always heartwarming without the heart part
Somewhere around the early 2000's I was working at a newspaper when the publisher asked the newsroom "Anyone want to go for a Biplane ride?"
My friend across the desk and I shot our hands up. Turns out Red Baron pizza had two biplanes doing a promotional tour.
My pilot asked me what I wanted to do, and my response was "I want you to scare the hell out of me."
So we did loops, barrel rolls, and hammerheads. 😎

@@MaaZeusIt's also why they are able to use our satellites.
Pfhahaha, the idea of Morgan Freeman doing an ad read for NordVPN as the closing monologue. That freaking sent me.
Look up lights over Langley Air force base.
That's such a great catch actually, love that little update!! We definitely need a Morgan Freeman Nord VPN narration at the end of this, let's make it happen y'all 😂😂😂
I could listen to Morgan Freeman read the phone book
One reason I love this movie: It doesn't drag on unnecessarily, it has the right mix of humor, seriousness, drama, cheesiness, great one-liners, action and quiet moments. None of the characters are useless and everyone has their moments. There is character development (for example Russel Case). All in all, it is one of my favorite sci-fi action movies.
The 90s was the last decade of the real summer blockbuster - incredible disasters, huge set pieces, use of miniatures at their best, practical effects, unbelievable storylines. Such a shame we dont get movies like this anymore.

This movie was THE summer blockbuster of 1996. The lines were around the block. I think we saw it three maybe four times in the theater.
