The sequel is definitely not as good as the original. They made some pretty dumb decisions with it, but at the same time, I didn't hate it. The ending to the sequel is more realistic than the ending to this one, imo. Humans would not have won this encounter by any stretch of the imagination. Might as well have asked a group of cavemen to attack an Apache helicopter in flight.

Makes no sense, right? Aliens right in front of them and they still don’t believe. My only issue, if this movie was based on reality, is how fast the spaceships go. The movie was originally filmed with Russell being rejected to fly in the attack on the alien ship because of his alcoholism, and he was heartbroken because it was his chance to redeem himself, and flying was the one thing he could actually do well. When all the fighters had expended their missiles, Russell showed up in his cropduster with a missile strapped to it already knowing that he would have to sacrifice himself by ramming his plane onto the aliens' main weapon to stop them. The scene (which, because it wasn't used in the final version of the film, doesn't have full special effects) is available on RUclips if you want to see it. At a test screening, people couldn't help laughing at how ridiculous it looked when Russell's old biplane was keeping pace with the supersonic jet fighters that were "plowing the road" for him on his final attack, so they changed the story to what you see now. To me the biggest improvement from the change is the emotional scene when Russell looks at the photo of his children and resolves that he has to sacrifice himself for their sake.

Yeah, I was surprised when I saw that scene on the DVD, and very thankful that they changed it!
It did make me realise why everyone seems so surprised when he turns up with the last missile, though, and why his cockpit is different to all the others and why his jet seems to be going slower than it should and manoeuvring in odd ways (apparently they simply assigned the F-18 to the exact same flightpath as the crop duster, as they didn’t have time to redo the shots completely). I think they did a really good job in rewriting it!

My grandma was not the fantastical type but after this movie she completely got it, and remained a fan of fantasy movies until she died. One of the greatest summer blockbusters ever.
Meant for a July 3rd release.
But then it was pushed to July 2nd for huge demand.
A cast of this size well built for a film this size.
The actors they casted were all enjoyable to watch.
Filmmakers, director Emmerich & writer Devlin had prior hits (Universal Soldier & Stargate) and this was their biggest one yet.
The teaser trailer had everybody losing it.
Especially with The White House getting torched.
The speech by Bill Pullman as president Whitmore to the last line of defense is one of the great movie speeches ever.
    The merchandise was crazy.
Toys, video games, prequel publications (one was a novel and the other was a comic from by Marvel), etc.
The cropduster's character was actually abducted as presented in Independence Day #0 from Marvel Comics.
No.1 film of 1996 and Academy Award winner for Best Visual Effects.
As for the 2016 sequel aka Resurgence........
Well you'll have to see that for yourself.

Bill Pullman's speech as the President is... it's such a trope, it feels like a given in a movie like this, it shouldn't be as good as it is, but goddamn does he knock it out of the park. The delivery, the music swelling, the stakes that have been raised so high up to this point... perfect. Funny detail, the little take he does where the speaker doesn't work at first wasn't scripted, it just kind of happened his first time stepping up to the mic and they kept it in the final edit.

I was lucky enough to watch this in the theater on its opening weekend, and watched it countless times on VHS. Had a couple of the alien toy figures (and the floppy disk games that came with them!) as well. Having the movie take place on the same date as its opening was such a simple, but brilliant move. The story is pretty cheesy, but the actors make it so watchable. As much as I love Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith (and yes, this and Men In Black are peak Will Smith), I was most hyped to see Dr. Okun. He was played by Brent Spiner, who played Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Speaking of which, you should try giving the older Star Trek movies a chance. Wrath of Khan is an excellent place to start... All that aside, the visuals were absolutely mind-blowing. Once you saw the White House get destroyed in the teaser trailer, you _had_ to watch the movie. Looking back, it's arguably _the_ definitive 90s summer blockbuster.
