And yet it was a tremendous success on its release. I'm starting to wonder if all movies that don't become a franchise get forgotten, be they ever so successful. "Who framed Roger Rabbit?", "Robin Hood: Prince of thieves" and "Demolition man" are other examples. All of them huge blockbusters at the time, but not many people who weren't there seem to know about them nowadays. Because none of them got sequels?

My little sister did wilderness search and rescue, and the equipment failure death at the beginning reminds me of what one of her trainers said: "Our motto is. 'We're stupid.' In fact, we are so stupid that we have to check and double check everything to make sure we don't make any stupid mistakes."

    • @anonymes2884
      @anonymes2884 Год назад

Great motto :). Though it's less dangerous than it may seem, climbers do die in all kinds of "stupid" ways (abseiling off the end of your rope is surprisingly common for instance).
That said, the death at the start is almost pure Hollywood - it's so close to impossible for a climbing harness to fail in that way that it effectively _is_ impossible (the harness' manufacturer even had them include a disclaimer in the credits stating that the harness was modified to fail for the movie). No amount of double checking would've helped.
('Cliffhanger' is a lot of fun IMO but it is to climbing what 'Die Hard' is to police work :)

This movie is dedicated in memory to Wolfgang Gulich, whom was Stallone's climbing double. He was sadly killed in a car accident on August 31, 1992. He was 31 years old.
    Nominated for 3 Oscars:
    Best Visual Effects
    Best Sound Editing
    Best Sound Mixing.
It lost all 3 to JURASSIC PARK.
It was a box office success, making $255 million dollars against a $70 million dollar budget.
It's been labeled as "DIE HARD on a mountain."
It was given an NC 17 rating due to the graphic violence, at least 5 minutes, was cut to get that film an R Rating.

Cliffhanger was one of my favorites and one of the best action thrillers from 1993.
So it was known as 'Die Hard on a mountain' and another Sly Stallone classic.
This had one of the first-ever super bowl trailers with the music of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana: O Fortuna with split-second images.
So pumped to see it on Memorial Day weekend.
The suspense and drama were on par with each other.
But it was the characters and the environment that (for me) drove the action sequences.
I was age 13 at the time this movie came out and i loved it.
Also had the video game on Sega CD and the cutscenes were footage from the actual movie.
The director Renny Harlin made other hits.
Die Hard 2 (1990), The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996) and Deep Blue Sea (1999), you gotta check these out.

    Fun Facts:
The large majority of the film's scenes were shot in the Dolomites in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.
For example, the bridge scene was shot on Monte Cristallo in the via ferrata VF Ivano Dibona, which was reconstructed immediately after the movie.
The climbing was mostly on the Tofane cliffs, and in some scenes toward the end of the movie the audience clearly sees the three Tofane, the Croda da Lago, and the town of Cortina; the location of this is on top of Mount Faloria, at the arrival of the funivia Faloria.
In other scenes are the sentiero ferrato Astaldi, over the Rifugio Dibona. The small house has been constructed on the sand of the river Boite, in Fiames, close to the heliport. Some filming took place in Durango, Colorado.
The credits of the film also thank the Ute Tribe for filming in the Ute Mountain reservation.
Cliffhanger is in the Guinness Book of World Records for the costliest aerial stunt ever performed. Stuntman Simon Crane was paid $1 million to perform the aerial transfer scene, where he crossed between two planes at an altitude of 15,000 feet (4,600 m).
The principal climbing doubles were Ron Kauk and Wolfgang Güllich. Kauk performed as Stallone's climbing double after Güllich died in a car accident in 1992. The doubles filled in for Stallone on most of the climbing scenes due to the actor's fear of heights; an injury to Stallone's hand, reported to have occurred on one of the cliffs, actually occurred on a soundstage.

Truly wanted Stallone dead for dropping his girlfriend, but instantaneously sacrifices himself to warn Stallone when criminals threaten them both. John Lithgow was a fantastic villain, and later did a great supporting role in Dexter.

Cliffhanger was always one of my favorite action movies from the 90s, this same director directed: Die Hard 2, another good action movie. On the same theme of mountaineers I recommend: Vertical Limit (2000) and Everest (2015) with Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson and Jake Gyllenhaal, this last film is not an action film, it is a True drama based on a true story that happened on Everest in 1996.

I first saw this at the drive in as a double feature with The Fugitive and oooohhh boy I am not good with heights! I recently watched it again and had forgotten a lot about it. There’s some serious cheese and some not so great acting, but Michael Rooker steals the show. His final line “he’ll be the one wearing the helicopter” made me laugh so hard I hurt myself. 😂

Hi Jen, "Cliffhanger" is a really great action flick! I loved it the very first time I saw it many years ago.
A big "yes" to watching "Rambo 2" and the entire "Rocky" franchise.
John Lithgow (Qualen) plays an awesome bad guy. You can see more of Lithgow's evilness in "Ricochet" (1991) also starring Denzel Washington.
Finally, the $1000 bill is a real thing. Former President Grover Cleveland is the face on the bill. Also, the $1000 bill has not been reproduced in decades. Cleveland was the 22nd AND 24th U.S. President.
    "Executive Decision" (1996)
    "Speed" (1994)
    "The Rock" (1996)
    "Commando" (1985) and
"Die Hard 3" (1995) all have a similar vibe to "Cliffhanger" and are worth checking out. 📽❤️

You should check out Copland. It's not your typical Stallone film. It's a crime drama, where Stallone plays a kind of down on his luck cop with some crazy things going on in the NJ town he is the Sheriff in. It's got an INCREDIBLE cast, and Stallone's performance is nothing short of outstanding.

And still, to this day, one of the most accurate depictions of climbing in a fictional movie ('Cliffhanger' is fun but it's hilariously bad in that respect, arguably vying for the "top" spot with 'Vertical Limit').

Awesome review of a great Stallone movie!!! Always forget how good this movie is - it just sucks you in and does not let go until the end!!
A few very under-rated Stallone movies to consider:
Over the Top (about ARM WRESTLING competition)
Daylight (basically the same as this movie but inside a TUNNEL)
Cop Land (he is a cop)
Lock Up (with Schwarzenegger and in a prison)
A few ACTION movies based on aircraft to consider:
    Air Force One (Harrison Ford)
    Executive Decision (Kurt Russell)
Island In the Sky (John Wayne - probably one of his most under-rated performance)
The High and the Mighty (John Wayne again)

Def watch the Rocky films. At least the first one - it's one of those films that everyone should watch at least once in their lives. Written by Stallone in 3 days when he was pretty much an unknown struggling actor and filmed on a tiny budget, it launched him into worldwide fame and fortune (and features probably the most famous set of steps in movie history).

I'm glad to hear you want to see more films by Stallone now, so I spontaneously recommend "Cop Land" (1997) and "Over the Top" (1987).
Btw, as nice as you hummed along to the melody here maybe we should make sure the movies have good soundtracks in recommendations. xD

Aside from Demolition Man, and all the Rocky and Rambo movies, Stallone has one more forgotten action movie. It’s called Daylight. The movie is kind of a throwback to the old disaster movies from the 70s, like The Poseidon Adventure. It’s about a tunnel collapse and Stallone is fighting to get the survivors out to, well, daylight. Get it? Ha! It’s solid and intense entertainment.

Thanks for watching this one, it was one of my favorite movies in my younger years. I can't think of a similar action movie at the moment. There is however a movie about a rock climbing accident that's based on a true story called Touching the Void and I was in awe when I watched that movie.
Someone in the comments recommended watching another Sylvester Stallone movie called Demolition Man and I certainly hope you will do a reaction to that one at some point. That really is one that never gets old for me and it's always great to see someone react to it for the first time.
