Originally, it was shot with Russell being denied by Major Mitchell because he was drinking, ultimately leading to him showing up with a missile strapped to his cropdusting plane for a suicide mission. Test audiences didn't like it, so scenes were shot for the "flight experience" interview in the hangar and Russell in the fighter cockpit set. Other scenes were edited accordingly to fit. It's why the one guy says "all missiles have been fired" but Russell is still there with a missile that would have been included in their count. The original version can be found on YT with director commentary, it was included as a deleted scene in the old Laserdisc release.
When Will Smith was dragging the alien across the desert and yells "What is that smell!!!" it was because the salt flats is a dried up lake bed and the shrimp that lived there were in a state of decay and no one told Will about it.
In the full version, the kid that was feeing sick was not an alien, rather he had a sub-plotnwhere he was receiving chemotherapy of some sort. The undertone was about how people would be affected when something like this happens and the supply chain(for meds in this case) was interrupted. The bulk of that got cut for the theatrical version toreduce run time. By the end of the speech, the theater was lit. The entire audience was standing and cheering. Will Smith declined to be in the second one. Looks like that was a smart move
A lot of my favourite lines come from this movie "Yes, yes. Yes. Without the 'oops'" " just a little anxious to get up there and whoop E.T.'s a--, that's all!" So many snappy lines.
The ultimate summer popcorn flick. Roland Emmerich nailed it with this one. Everything after, while enjoyable, ventured much more into cheesiness. Still I'd recommend Armageddon (that one is Michael Bay directing, and Deep Impact is the better movie and came out at nearly the exact same time. Either is a good pick tho.), The Day After Tomorrow, 2012, or Stargate. They just don't do summer spectacles like they used to.
lol, "Is he an alien? is he one of the aliens?" So funny! cute! I grew up watching this movie on VHS too. And I believe it was one of the first movies I've seen in the theater. The VHS had a full hologram on the cover!
Fun Fact: The filmmakers of this movie originally did not have any particular date as to when this was set to happen. It was only when the censors told them they could not call their movie Independence Day unless it took place on July 4th that they added the timeline which also gave Bill Pullman a great speech to deliver. P. S. I used to have this movie on DVD and remember such information from the director’s audio commentary.
Patricia, the President's daughter is played by Mae Whitman, who would later play Sandra Bullock's daughter in Hope Floats, George Clooney's daughter in One Fine Day and as Amber in the NBC TV Series Parenthood.
I'm not American but I watch this movie every July 4th in memory of my Uncle. This was one of his favourite movies (he was a huge Will Smith fan) and we'd watch it every year. He died from alcoholism 5 years ago. Every year I watch this movie and remember sitting on his couch as a kid cheering when the aliens blow up. RIP Uncle Rana. Miss you so much.
I HIGHLY recommend watching the behind the scenes for this movie and how they did so many of the practical effects. It was one of the last to use that much model work and practical effects.
I first saw this year's ago when I was in high school, I'd wager everyone in the cinema got jump scared by the alien splitting open in the autospy scene.
I was stationed at MCAS Tustin and sometimes El Toro in the 90's. When this came out we laughed about how they depicted the base. Still nice to get a shout out from Hollywood once in a while. By the way, China Lake and a few aux sites are way more cool than Area 51. Flying with fun stuff in the late 90's and early 2000's after 9/11 was a great time. I will attest, I never saw any alien technology or aircraft.
The marketing for this movie was genius. The first thing the public got to see was a Super Bowl ad of the White House getting blown up... It was like instantly the most anticipated movie of 1996. I saw it at a midnight show on opening night with a group of friends. We all agreed that the movie made us feel good to be an Earthling! And that the movie, as flawed as the script is, was 2 hours of non stop entertainment. It has become an Independence Day tradition in my family to watch this movie every July 4th. The sequel is not worth watching except for the large scale destruction scenes... which are about 3 minutes of screen time. And SPOILER ALERT!!! it blatantly sets up another movie that will never be made.
Then of course Dr Evil used that very same shot of the White House’s destruction to screw with the President in the 60s in The Spy who Shagged Me. Perfection.
Yes please watch the second!! Very nicely made. A lot of characters returned. Not as good as the first but still solid storyline. I love sci fi films, and the second was amazing.
In the novelization of this movie, there was a b-plot with the youngest of Russell's kids being sick with a condition that their mom died of. It was among several things that were ultimately cut from the story, even though they filmed it. Test audiences didn't like a number of things.
I was 17 whenI saw this in theaters and I pretty much misses the whole movie because me and my girlfriend just made out in the back of the theater for over 2 1/2 hours! But I still told everybody it was a good movie!😁
16:15 I think most of the cars would still have the keys in their ignitions. People would almost certainly leave them behind when fleeing the explosion.
everytime me and my sister are together and we see bill pullman, she either goes it's the president or turns to me and says you punched the president x'D
So if you haven't done it already, you need to do "Mars Attacks!", which is largely a parody of this movie and a lot of sci-fi tropes. It's a wonderful film.
I lived in Chicago during the 90's. When ID" was released in 1996, there were some special cinema shows of ID" starting at Midnight, July 2-3, when this film starts in chronology. I went with some friends. We had a blast viewing ID" -a real thrill ride at the cinema. After, out for drinks. Kind of got a vibe this film would be huge! One big screw-up, was that Entertainment Weekly put an image of the Alien species on their front cover, published before this film premiered, so had seen that the day before on the shelf of shop, spoiled what the Aliens looked like.
Armageddon is definitely a must especially for some good old fashion Michael Bay American Save the World Ego Stroking (top 5 movies to watch when substitute teacher shows up to class).
Bay's Theorem: The overall quality of any given Michael Bay film is inversely proportional to the square of the quality of its visual effects. Means he makes really shitty movies, and nothing else...ever.
Addie, at the end, you said you knew some of the actors, others appeared familiar, yet you were not sure. Did you notice “Jayne, the Man they call Jayne” as you are a fan of FIREFLY-? Adam Baldwin, was the Air Force officer, with good pistol aim (alien, Coke can) 😎 A talented Cast, collective.
Enjoyed your reaction :) It's a terrific popcorn flick - over the top action, comedy, moments that make you cry, and a kick-a$$ speech from Bill Pullman. I saw it in the theaters on opening weekend; it was awesome. Seen it multiple times since (not *every* 4th of July, but more than a few). I also saw the sequel, and... well... it was there. Not awful, but not great. The cute kids from this movie are grown up and are the leads in the sequel. I didn't hate it but haven't ever felt the need to re-watch.
The inspirational speech, by The President, is a riff on the pre-battle speech of King Henry V, in W.Shakespeare’s “Henry 5th” before the Battle of Agincourt, 1415. (We, Band of Brothers…etc)
For as many times as I've seen this movie (probably well over 100), I'm surprised it took me this long to realize that Jeff Goldblum is drinking Bushmills. Good choice
I think what gets most people fired up about independence day is the speech by Bill Pullman toward the end. I would watch the second one. If not for your channel I would watch it outside the channel. It is not near as good as the first but rarely sequels are. Most people I have seen react to it or have talked to about it all have a, little, bias toward it because Will Smith is not in it. He had other films he was making at the time and they proceeded along without him instead of waiting. I did still find the second one entertaining and think they had set up a third movie which actually looked like it could be very good. But we will never see a third so that kind of stinks. Great reaction Addie.
Harry Connick Jr. who played "Jimmy" was in a couple very entertaining films. One was a WWII movie based on a true story called 'Memphis Belle' while the other he played a killer in was called 'Copy Cat' which is a psychological horror type of movie. His small part was brilliantly played by him though as he's peppered throughout the film. He was a real psychopath in it.
@@MGower4465 It's fine. I knew the difference but my mind just quickly typed out the word most commonly said. I suppose the pic of the "Memphis Belle" on their bomber kind of gives that away too heh. I just edited it and corrected it so thanks for the heads up.
Hey Addie. Great reaction as always. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend *Mars Attacks* which came out the same year and has a very similar plot and structure. But it is Tim Burton, so it is funnier and weirder. I like it more. Cheers!
Dr Oken is played by Brent Spiner who is most famous for playing Lt Commander Data in Star Trek the Next Generation and subsequent films. Brilliant actor
The scenes outside of Area 51 were filmed on the Bonneville Salt Flats. The flats were also used for Pirates of the Caribbean At Worlds End as Davy Jones' locker.
I was 11 years old when I seen this movie back in summer of '96 at a Drive-In theater, that was featuring a doubled feature! This has always been a must watch around 4th of July for me. The second movie I saw that night was The Nutty professor and I could not stop laughing!

A little late since I was traveling over the 4th, but I'm watching this while smoking a cigar called America, and I think that's nicely appropriate. Happy Independence Day!
Addie it is a tradition in our house that we watch Yankee Doddle Dandy 1942 on July 4th, great movie great music, it's about James M Cohan, with James Cagney
I have to at least listen to President Whitmore's speech every July 4th. The sequel was actually quite disappointing. There are some things they refer to in that movie's history after the events of this one that might have made for a much more interesting story.
Fun reaction. Thanks! The realistic part: I can believe their ship would be impervious to nuclear weapons. To travel between the stars, one needs to move at an appreciable fraction of the speed of light and at those speeds, even dust particles come on like nuclear bombs. The unrealistic part: Computer viruses depend on an intimate and precise knowledge of the system to be infected. See you next time. Oh, yes, if you want scary, try "Alien" and its sequel "Aliens."
I recognize that the sequel to this film is bad. But, I enjoyed the sequel. So you can watch it if you want, just remember a lot of people don't like the sequel. I enjoyed it for what it was. Great Video, Addie! Hope you have a wonderful day!😊

Must watch for July 4th. That speech by Bill Pullman still rocks 27 years later.
The original version can be found on YT with director commentary, it was included as a deleted scene in the old Laserdisc release.
...and the DVD & Blu-Ray releases too.
I’m glad they went with the edits, because the original version was too ridiculous
@@Wafaloo Yeah, I'm surprised it even made it off the paper at all.
This is one of my all time favourite movies, it shouldnt work, it should collapse under its own cheese, but its so good...
Addie mentioning another movie was the best. "does it have a weak spot like the death star" 👍
"aww that poor kid... AND THE DOG!!" 😂 as long as the dog lives, we good haha
Boomer........Will Live
"Dr. Orkin" was played by Brent Spiner... He's "Commander Data", the Android on Star Trek: The Next Generation"!
Addie's ongoing conspiracy theories during this was awesome lol. I think Addie may have watched too many movies now :)
The son potentially being an alien made me chuckle
A lot of my favourite lines come from this movie
"Yes, yes. Yes. Without the 'oops'"
" just a little anxious to get up there and whoop E.T.'s a--, that's all!"
So many snappy lines.
"Stop side-seat driving!" is my favourite.
ArE yOu SuRe?
-Russell Case
"in the words of my generation... up yours"
"we will not go quietly into the night. We will not go without a fight"
I wouldn't worry about watching the sequel, it never got anywhere near recapturing the magic of this one in my opinion
Its a bad sequel, but its watchable just for the comebacks and referencies, it sucks but its kinda fun in my opinion
Stargate is a favorite movie of mine.
It's good Armageddon and Deep Impact came around the same time but both felt different enough despite using the same main plot.
I loved 2012 as well
lol, "Is he an alien? is he one of the aliens?" So funny! cute! I grew up watching this movie on VHS too. And I believe it was one of the first movies I've seen in the theater. The VHS had a full hologram on the cover!
Bill Pullman's Independence Day speech, one of the best ever put on film
I cannot believe you haven't watched so many of these movies yet, but I'm enjoying every reaction video!!
The president's speech is something that needs to be heard every time. Just imagine what we could do if we put aside our differences and work as one.
A classic i loved watching this as a kid and i still love watching it now as a grown man
How did you like Data's performance?
Goldblum repeated his famous line from Jurassic Park: "Must go faster! Must go faster! Must go faster!"
I believe you mean Bob Wheeler's performance.
Who?
I was stationed at MCAS Tustin and sometimes El Toro in the 90's. When this came out we laughed about how they depicted the base. Still nice to get a shout out from Hollywood once in a while.
By the way, China Lake and a few aux sites are way more cool than Area 51. Flying with fun stuff in the late 90's and early 2000's after 9/11 was a great time.
I will attest, I never saw any alien technology or aircraft.
“Is mommy sleeping now?” 🥺 Gets me every time.
I can still hear the eruption of laughter from the packed cinema whenever Will Smith interacted with the alien.
Independence Day Resurgence, quite a few of the same people return 20 years later.. I gave them both 10 / 10
I was 17 whenI saw this in theaters and I pretty much misses the whole movie because me and my girlfriend just made out in the back of the theater for over 2 1/2 hours! But I still told everybody it was a good movie!😁
16:15 I think most of the cars would still have the keys in their ignitions. People would almost certainly leave them behind when fleeing the explosion.
I saw this at a drive-in theater and it was amazing. Peak 90's experience.
everytime me and my sister are together and we see bill pullman, she either goes it's the president or turns to me and says you punched the president x'D
I remember seeing this movie on opening day, 3 months before shipping out for the Navy. Was mesmerizing!
@@DoremiFasolatido1979 Bad take
Addie, at the end, you said you knew some of the actors, others appeared familiar, yet you were not sure.
Did you notice “Jayne, the Man they call Jayne” as you are a fan of FIREFLY-? Adam Baldwin, was the Air Force officer, with good pistol aim (alien, Coke can) 😎
A talented Cast, collective.
This film was the classic and awesome part of my childhood memories. I kinda glad that this movie was successful in box office. 😊❤
Fun fact. The president's daughter is played by Mae Whitman ( Parenthood, Good Girls, The Duff, etc)
One of the great summer blockbusters of the 90s! Awesome film!!
I would rewatch it the sequel
A Classic!! The second one wasn't as good but still a nice sci-fi movie. The speech that Bill Pullman gives is one for the books 🙂
Good choice
"If i saw that dog burst into flames, i would not have been ok"
-Addie, 2023
I remember watching this in the theater. So much fun. Blew me away
My favorite movie presidents:
1. Bill Pullman - Independence Day
2. Morgan Freeman - Deep Impact
3. Harrison Ford - Air Force One
Not to be a pedant, but its Belle, not Bell. As in antebellum unmarried woman, not the thing in a belfry.
@@MGower4465 It's fine. I knew the difference but my mind just quickly typed out the word most commonly said. I suppose the pic of the "Memphis Belle" on their bomber kind of gives that away too heh. I just edited it and corrected it so thanks for the heads up.
One of the greatest speeches for a movie
Don't forget Bob Wheeler, the recurring character in Night Court.
The scenes outside of Area 51 were filmed on the Bonneville Salt Flats. The flats were also used for Pirates of the Caribbean At Worlds End as Davy Jones' locker.
I love your reference to that SNL skit. It's the best skit they've had in decades.
I was 11 years old when I seen this movie back in summer of '96 at a Drive-In theater, that was featuring a doubled feature! This has always been a must watch around 4th of July for me. The second movie I saw that night was The Nutty professor and I could not stop laughing!
I'd skip the second one, instead watch the one Roland Emmerich did before this called Stargate.
Yes! Stargte is an absolute classic masterpiece
Yes, Stargate is a must-watch!
The president's speech before the final battle still give me chills
This film did blow my mind when I was 12, when it came out. And I love your reaction to it - I personally loved the Area 51 scenes.
I remember seeing this in the theaters, it was a lot of fun. The complete destruction of the cities was crazy!
I never saw the second one and I have never heard much positive about it.
Yea don't waste your time. The cgi is good, but the storyline is horrible.
Dr. Taken (with the long hair) is Brent spiner who plays data on star trek the next generation amazing actor who got his start on the original night court
Bill Pullman: The Greatest American President!
A little late since I was traveling over the 4th, but I'm watching this while smoking a cigar called America, and I think that's nicely appropriate. Happy Independence Day!
There was a second one? Was it called "Labor Day?"
Addie it is a tradition in our house that we watch Yankee Doddle Dandy 1942 on July 4th, great movie great music, it's about James M Cohan, with James Cagney
ah the 90's....when alien spaceships ran windows 95' and seeing New York buildings blow up was entertainment.....
Happy 4th
the speech the president gives is one of the best in any movie ever... imho
Only thanks to Overly Enthusiastic Salute Guy.
Overly Enthusiastic Salute Guy 🤣🤣🤣
Hope you have a wonderful day!😊
I liked the sequel as well l did not think it was bad
Escaping the mother-ship .... Jeff Goldblum, "Must go faster! Must go faster!" A line brought back by Jurassic Park driving away from the T-Rex!
I can't remember if it clicked when I saw JP the first time. As I got older my memory was the 2nd thing to go. I can't remember what the first thing was. lol
Have a Happy 4th of July, Addie!! And Jeremy! And of course, Ollie! I hope the fireworks don't scare you too much.
Back for another view. Thanks for putting it up front in the library. ☺
19:10 I always got a laugh out of the president asking, "Can they be killed?" Well sir, you're not sitting down to a cup of with these three are you?
My favorite movie of all time. Saw it four times in theaters. It's the reason I'm a syfy nerd now!
32:20 It is a mixture of Top Guns and Aliens lol. Very well put.
Lol so glad you put in that SNL skit clip, always makes me laugh
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the First Lady is MY President! IYKYK 😁😁
So say we all.
1 of the 90's Great Movie!!
14:22 Maybe it has some kind of weak spot like the Death Star LOL. Maybe. Lone Star from Spaceballs is one of the pilots as well as the President.
Lol when you referenced the snl skit, i knew exactly which one you were talking about. I love that one 👍🤣
